Stony Plain Records artist: The Duke Robillard Band - They Called It Rhythm & Blues - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, They Called It Rhythm & Blues, by The Duke Robillard Band,  and it's another stellar performance by the Duke and his crew. Opening with swing blues, Here I'm Is, Chris Cote on lead vocal really does a nice job with excellent fluid guitar lead by Robillard, and solid backing by Bruce Bears on keys, Marty Ballou on bass, Mark Teixeira on drums and Doug James on sax. Fools Are Getting Scarcer, James really does a great job stepping out on bari and tenor sax solos over a hot R&B feel. Excellent! Kim Wilson takes the lead on Tell Me Why with his trademark vocals and solid harmonica work. Robillard's guitar lead is impeccable and the band is solid. John Hammond is up front on Homeless Blues with his delta based vocal and playing style. I really like Hammond and am glad to see him on this release. With distinctive drum work by Teixeira and piano by Bears, this track is one of my favorites. Freddy King's Someday After Awhile, is a real showcase for both Cote and Robillard with exceptional vocal lead and plenty of room for Duke to stretch. Very nice. Kim Wilson does a rework on Guitar Slim's Things I Used To Do, The Things I Forgot To Do,  and Wilson works it nicely. Duke's guitar soloing really captures the styling of Slim and the piano work of Bears is spot on, with reinforcement by James and Mark Earley on sax. Very cool. Wrapping the release is hot instrumental jam, Swingin' For Four Bills, featuring really nice front work by Duke, Sue Foley and Mike Flanigin.  This is a super track and great closer for Robillard on this newest release.

Stony Plain Records artist: Sue Foley - Pinky's Blues - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (October 22, 2021), Pinky's Blues, from Sue Foley and I think it's her best yet! Opening with title track, Pinky's Blues, Foley digs in on guitar, establishing that this is a going to be a blues guitar release right up front. Her riffs are stinging and relentless. Angela Strehli's blues strut, Two Bit Texas Town has a great aggressive, Willie Dixon feel featuring Foley on vocal and with vicious SRV like riffs,  Jon Penner on bass, and Chris Layton on drums. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Southern Men and it's story telling format. Foley not only does a great job on vocal  but with bends and a lot of vibrato, really whammy's this track. Excellent! Another Strehli penned track, Say It's Not So really works nicely with rich vocals and double stopped rhythm work by Foley. Here soloing throughout is really nicely phrased and emotional. Excellent! Clarence Gatemouth Brown's Okie Dokie Stomp is killer with all of the zest in Gate's original. Folley is really rocking the house here and you better bet I'm rocking! Robert Nighthawk's Someday is another terrific cover of a Chicago style blues. Foley's vocals are really solid but her guitar stretching is fresh and gripping. Tell me you aren't stomping your heel. Wrapping the release is Willie Dixon's When The Cat's Gone The Mice Play. Foley sells this one to the max with sweet vocals and fleet fingered riffs. One of the best traditional style electric blues releases that I have heard this year end to end. Excellent!

VizzTone Label Group artist: Gabe Stillman - Just Say The Word - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Just Say The Word, from Gabe Stillman and it's a solid blues release. Opening with slide exdplosion, Give Me Some Time, Gabe Stillman on guitar and vocal really gets it rockin. With Elmore James like flair, Stillman really ramps it up, backed by Colin Beatty on bass, Ray Hagen on drums, Taylor Streiff on B3 and the Texas Horns doing the rest. Excellent opener. R&B flavored, Let It Go, gives Stillman a chance to not only show his wares vocally but excellent guitar phrasing. No Time For Me has a lumbering pace and Stillman turns up the gain for a saturated tone on his guitar to grind over the full tone of Streiff's B3. This track has more rock but in the tone of a ZZ Top like jam. Very cool. Ballad, Heartbreak Makes A Sound, is a mellow, radio track, with solid vocals and guitar by Stillman, Streiff on piano and with a nice sax solo by Mark Kazanoff. Anson Funderburgh and Sue Foley take turns on shuffle, No Matter What You Wear and Foley joins Stillman on vocal.  Susquehanna 66 is a hot jazz like shuffle with some smoking harmonica work by Greg Izor and some really hot guitar work by Stillman. Excellent! Soul track, I'll Take Care Of You really shows off Stillman's soul prowess, cradled in a keyboard bed and capped off with a solid guitar solo. Very nice. Wrapping the release is See BT Blues, an excellent blues number with a jagged rhythm, cool. unconventional double stops and perfect B3 and drums accents. This is an excellent closer for an excellent release.

Stony Plain artist: Sue Foley - The Ice Queen - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Ice Queen, from Sue Foley and I think it may be her best yet. Opening with Come To Me with Charlie Sexton joining on vocal and slide guitar, Foley adds a little funk to her already bluesy deal with Chris Maresh on bass, Chris Layton on drums and Kyle Thompson on maracas. Run has a country 2 step feel and Foley really drives this one with her ambitious guitar rhythm. Slow blues and title track, The Ice Queen, shows Foley at her purest with George rains on drums and Billy Horton on bass. Her riffs are right off a Hooker release and her vocals are simple and direct. Very nice. Shuffle track, The Lucky Ones features Jimmie Vaughan trading lead vocal and guitar riffs. With the addition of Mike Flanigin or organ, the track has an additional dimension and Foley's guitar riffs play nicely against Vaughan's. Billy Gibbons joins on Fool's Golds and his vocals really work great with Foley's. his solo work is always distinctive and effortless giving this track a nice sparkle. Blues ballad, If I Have Forsaken You is the strongest melodic track on the release giving it solid radio potential and Vaughan's distinctive playing style and tone shine. An updated cover of Bessie Smith's Send Me To the 'Lectric Chair is cool and fun. With Spanish and classical influences, The Dance highlight's Foley's acoustic guitar proficiency and also adds nicely to the overall texture of the release. Wrapping the release is Carter family's Cannonball Blues, again only Foley on acoustic guitar and vocal. This is a real nice closer for a totally enjoyable release.

Stony Plain Records Signs Acclaimed Canadian Roots Guitarist/Singer Sue Foley and Will Release Her Label Debut CD, "The Ice Queen," March 2, 2018

Stony Plain Records Signs Acclaimed Canadian Roots Guitarist/Singer Sue Foley and Will Release Her Label Debut CD, The Ice Queen, March 2, 2018

Special Guests on New Disc Include Jimmie Vaughan, Z.Z. Top’s Billy F Gibbons and

Charlie Sexton

EDMONTON, AB – Stony Plain Records announces the signing of acclaimed Canadian roots guitarist/singer Sue Foley, and will release her label debut CD, The Ice Queen, on March 2, 2018.

Produced by Mike Flanigin, who also plays organ on the new disc, The Ice Queen was recorded at Firestation Studios in San Marcos, Texas. Joining Sue Foley as special guests is a trio of legendary Texas guitarslingers – Jimmie Vaughan, Z.Z.Top’s Billy F Gibbons and Charlie Sexton - as well as a host of other Lone Star State all-stars, including Chris “Whipper” Layton (formerly of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) and George Rains (drums), Derek O’Brien (guitar), Chris Maresh and Billy Horton (bass) and The Texas Horns: John Mills, Al Gomez, Jimmy Shortell, Randy Zimmerman and Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff.

I’m extremely excited to be working with Holger Petersen and Stony Plain Records,” Sue Foley says about the new CD. “Holger is one of the most knowledgeable ‘real music’ people in the business. Stony Plain is known to put out great music and I know The Ice Queen has found her home.”

Sue Foley is the only female member of the famed “Jungle Show,” featuring Billy Gibbons, Jimmie Vaughan, Mike Flanigin and Chris Layton, which became one of the hottest tickets in Austin in 2016. Soon after playing two sold out shows at Austin City Limits Live 3TEN Club in December, Foley entered the studio with her Texan pals and began laying down tracks for the new album. She will return to Austin for more of “The Jungle Shows” on December 26 and 27 at Antone's.

Recorded throughout 2017, The Ice Queen represents Foley’s full circle journey – her return to the roots of her career in Austin with producer Mike Flanigin. The album was recorded with her long-time friends and collaborators Vaughan, Gibbons, Layton, Sexton and others, as well as members of the Tedeschi Trucks and Gary Clark Jr. bands.

“When I was a teenager I idolized Jimmie Vaughan and Billy F Gibbons,” Foley says. “They're both legends now so this feels like an historical event (at least it does for me). And I grew up sitting at the feet of players like George ‘Big Beat’ Rains, Derek O'Brien and The Texas Horns. I spent many nights watching Charlie Sexton and the Arc Angels with Chris Layton. I learned and grew more musically in my years in Austin than at any point in my life. The fact that all these mega talented musicians have graced my album is beyond anything I hoped for. I am still pinching myself.”

A flood of inspiration and themes can be found on each of the tracks – ranging from lost love, anguish, and struggle to release, forgiveness and rebirth.  Mostly recorded live in the studio, Foley’s emotional vocal delivery, conviction, accessible yet inspired lyrics and intrepid guitar playing are all laid out, bare and raw for the songs to reveal.

Opening with the radio friendly, funky, swamp-meets Bo Diddley beat of “Come to Me,” The Ice Queen also features the upbeat and rollicking tracks “Run,” “The Lucky Ones” (a duet with Jimmie Vaughan) and “Gaslight.” There are several bluesy and soulful tracks, including “81,” “The Ice Queen,” (with its menacing John Lee Hooker vibe in tone and substance), “Fool's Gold” (featuring Billy F Gibbons on vocals and harmonica), “If I Have Forsaken You” (with the horns sounding echoes of the great Bobby “Blue” Bland), and a cheeky, guitar-heavy cover of Bessie Smith’s “Send Me To The ‘Lectric Chair.” Foley also provides some more mellow and unexpected songs on The Ice Queen with the jazzy “Death of a Dream,” the flamenco-blues hybrid “The Dance” (which showcases her acoustic guitar work) and a beautiful cover of the Carter Family’s “Cannonball Blues.”

Sue Foley is a multi-award-winning musician and one of the finest blues and roots artists working today. She is a veritable triple-threat of musical talent as a guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. As with many blues women of the past, Foley has a long history of defying convention, and being a positive role model for aspiring, young female musicians.

She has been working professionally since the age of 16, and by the age of 21, Foley had relocated to Austin, Texas, and began recording for Antone’s, the esteemed blues label and historic nightclub that helped launch the career of Stevie Ray Vaughan and many others. In the two decades that have followed, Sue Foley has been busy touring and recording steadily, all while toting her signature pink paisley Fender Telecaster. In 2001, she won the prestigious Juno Award (Canadian equivalent of the Grammy) and also holds the record for the most Maple Blues Awards in Canada and has earned three Trophees de Blues de France. She has also garnered several nominations at the Blues Music Awards from The Blues Foundation.

The Ice Queen represents Sue Foley’s indefatigable commitment to her craft, and her transparency with the journey that birthed her, further proving that you can’t keep a good blueswoman down, particularly when she is The Ice Queen.

Chance of Rain - Peter Karp & Sue Foley

Gifted singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist and American troubadour, Peter Karp, is a master songsmith with an art for spinning true-to-life emotions, humor, and candor. With an upbringing that was equal parts southern Alabama and the swamps of New Jersey, Karp¹s music is fueled bythe Yankee-Rebel juxtaposition. He first caught national attention with help from Rolling Stone guitarist Mick Taylor who recorded and toured with Karp on his first label release "The Turning Point." Karp further established himself on the national scene as a critically acclaimed songwriter, and accomplished guitarist and pianist with the release of his Blind Pig debut entitled "Shadows and Cracks." On the road across the U.S. and Canada, Karp repeatedly transfixes his live audiences. Critics compare his songwriting to John Hiatt and John Prine, with impressive guitar and slide licks infused by his love of Freddie King and Elmore James. Peter Karp personifies the amorphous Americana sound, seamlessly blending blues and roots music with a high sense of entertainment. Sue Foley is considered to be one of the finest blues and roots artists working today. Born to a working class family, Sue spent her early childhood moving from Canadian town to town with her mother. At sixteen, she embarked on her professional career. By twenty-one, she was living in Austin TX and recording for the legendary blues label, Antone¹s Records. Her first release, "Young Girl Blues," quickly established her unique talents as a blues guitarist and songwriter. Throughout the 90¹s she took to the road with her paisley Telecaster and honed her craft, working and sharing the stage with such artists as BB King, Buddy Guy, Lucinda Williams and Tom Petty. After moving back to Canada, Sue won the prestigious Juno Award for her critically acclaimed CD "Love Coming Down" as well as seventeen Maple Blues Awards.

New Pinetop Perkins & Karp/Foley titles from Blind Pig!

blindpigrecords.com
NEW RELEASES FROM BLIND PIG RECORDS!
Noted roots music label Blind Pig Records will release new titles on April 17th by beloved blues piano icon Pinetop Perkins and the dynamic performing and songwriting duo of Peter Karp and Sue Foley.
PINETOP PERKINS "HEAVEN" (AVAILABLE ON CD and LP)

If there is a heaven - and God knows there ought to be for those blues musicians of The Delta who endured grievous deprivation and suffered countless indignities yet brought joy to so many - Pinetop Perkins is certainly there. It is unquestionably a little slice of heaven for us to hear Pinetop once again on this previously unreleased after-hours set of masterful music.

http://mailman.305spin.com/users/blindpigrecords/images/Pinetop5145e.jpg

The beloved dean of blues piano players and three time Grammy winner passed away last year, just four months shy of his 98th birthday. Heaven captures a beautifully intimate 1986 studio performance by Pinetop when he was "only" seventy three, and still at the peak of his powers. He performs solo on all but four tracks.

The self-taught master pianist is in magnificent form, delivering thundering chords and glissandos, rolled chords, trilled notes, complex metrical substitutions, sly musical quotes - and of course his trademark lightly swinging boogie woogie. His strong, rough-edged voice conveys an authority that is complemented by a subtle playfulness and vulnerability. On this album, his vocals are supplemented by recently-recorded contributions from Willie Smith on "Sitting On Top of the World" (believed to be Smith's last recording, as he passed away in September 2011) and Otis Clay, who captures the sweet agony of "Since I Fell For You."

Blind Pig is also issuing Pinetop's album on a limited edition 180 gram audiophile LP, the first title the label's simultaneously released on CD and LP since 1990. And in Pine's memory, we also urge support of the Pinetop Perkins Foundation (www.pinetopfoundation.org).

PETER KARP & SUE FOLEY "BEYOND THE CROSSROADS"
http://mailman.305spin.com/users/blindpigrecords/images/KarpFoley5146e.jpg

Beyond the Crossroads marks the newest chapter in the collaboration between these two noted singer-songwriter guitarists. A high voltage, plank spankin', piano boogyin', slide guitar stompin', blues-rocking CD that showcases twelve brilliantly crafted and unique original compositions. It's a loud celebration of triumph over tragedy, optimism over despair and faith over hopelessness

It delivers on the promise of Karp and Foley's groundbreaking, critically acclaimed 2010 song-cycle, He Said She Said. That album hit the Top 10 on the Billboard Blues Chart and was #1 for 6 weeks on the national blues and roots music radio charts. Says Foley, "Beyond the Crossroads is a natural extension of what we started with He Said She Said in that we're writing songs with themes in mind. Positivity, renewal, absolution." Karp added, "These times are trying - in the heart and in the streets. Time to fire up the amps and blow heat."

Blind Pig Records Artists: Peter Karp and Sue Foley - Beyond The Crossroads - New Release Review

I just got a copy of the new recording, Beyond The Crossroads, by Peter Karp and Sue Foley. This is a happy go lucky blues cd with 12 self penned tracks that will likely see very broad interest. We're Gonna Make It is a blues themed song with Foley and Karp trading vocals over a strong melodic theme. Foley's vocals are particularly strong presented over the Swingadelic horn backed band. I also found particular enjoyment of Analyze'n Blues. Foley takes the lead on vocals again and there is a particularly cool saturated tube amp sound in the background that always gets me amped up. Karp takes a great resonator solo on this number that brings to mind old Little Feat and Lowell George. At The Same Time gets a little grittier and has a great trombone solo as a special treat. More Than I Bargained For is definitely the song that will hit the airwaves. It is strongly written and has a cool guitar hook. Resistance has a different flair with Foley using a talking type singing style contrasted against a full on soul singer background. Plank Spank is an all out chicken pickin slide blazin instrumental demonstrating both artists talents on guitar. You've Got A Problem is a great boogie to wrap up the set. Karp takes the lead on vocals each player gets a chance to give it a ride. Very cool

If you like your blues on the pop side this is a great choice!

Treat Me Right - Peter Karp and Sue Foley

Sue Foley (born March 29, 1968, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian blues singer and guitarist.Foley has been writing and playing professionally since 1984. She has recorded ten albums, for both Antone's Records and Shanachie Records. She has spent over fourteen years on the road as a bandleader, lead vocalist, guitarist and manager of her own band. In addition to her own touring, she has also shared the stage with blues musicians, such as Back Alley John, B. B. King, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. Her initial career began in Ottawa, Canada, at the age of sixteen where, in addition to solo work, she sang with the Back Alley John Revue.

Foley sent a demo tape of herself to Clifford Antone's label (Antone's Records) in 1990. Impressed, the record label arranged an audition for the guitarist. She moved to Austin, Texas and soon signed a recording contract with Antone's.

Foley appeared on the bill at the 1992 San Francisco Blues Festival.

In 2000 Foley won a Juno Award for Best Blues Album for Love Comin' Down.

Her 2007 album, Time Bomb (2007), features two other female blues players, Deborah Coleman and Roxanne Potvin. The opening title track, "Time Bomb", an instrumental where all three women take turns laying down leads, on the next nine songs the women trade off taking lead vocals and guitar duties of every third song until they come together again on the final track "In The Basement".

And folks, April is "Blues Women" month for us - a tip of the hat to the ladies
