Come On Home Baby - Hubert Sumlin & Sunnyland Slim

Hubert Sumlin (born November 16, 1931) is an American Chicago blues and electric blues guitarist and singer, best known for his celebrated work, from 1955, as guitarist in Howlin' Wolf's band. His singular playing is characterized by "wrenched, shattering bursts of notes, sudden cliff-hanger silences and daring rhythmic suspensions". Listed as number sixty-five in the Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, Sumlin continues to tour and play blues guitar.

Father of the Blues - W.C. Handy

W.C. Handy has been called "the Father of the Blues" having single-handedly introduced a new style of music to the world. He acknowledged that he did not invent the blues but merely transcribed them and presented them to a worldwide audience. There have been many honors bestowed upon Handy since his death. In Memphis, a city park is named after him and in his hometown of Florence, Alabama, the log cabin where he was born has been restored and turned into a museum which houses mementos from his life. The city of Florence also holds an annual music festival in his honor.

Ain't Nobody's Business - Danny "MudCat" Dudeck and Barry Richman

“Mudcat is a tremendous slide guitarist, and most of all, a God-gifted entertainer.” Tim Duffy

Born: Tybee Island, Georgia
Repertoire Summary: Electric Blues
Current Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Born in St. Paul on the banks of the Mississippi River and raised on Tybee Island, Georgia, Mudcat began engaging audiences while traveling and busking on the sidewalks and at fairs throughout the US. Mudcat has apprenticed under many American musical pioneers, including Frank Edwards, Cootie Stark, Cora Mae Bryant, Neal Pattman, Dickey Betts, and Taj Mahal.

Carrying a robust repertoire full of original creations and American treasures, he introduces audiences to a diverse array of Southern music, evident through his nine CD releases (including these MMRF releases: I’ll Be Young Once Too, Kickin’ Chicken & The Mess is On).

“Danny ‘Mudcat’ Dudeck is an internationally known gospel and bluesman. Mudcat continues the traditions of the early blues pioneers while adding his own Mudcat edge, resulting in one of Atlanta’s greatest treasures. He regularly performs his Bayou-baked chicken-party revues at Atlanta’s premier blues club, Northside Tavern.”

Here is an abbreviated list of the stellar players with whom Richman has already performed or recorded: The Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule, Eric Clapton, Les Paul, Buddy Miles, John Lee Hooker, Mike Gordon & John Fishman (of Phish), Little Feat, Derek Trucks Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shawn Lane, Col. Bruce Hampton and many more.

RED HOUSE - BILLY COX, JOHN D'AMATO, ERIC GALES, NIC LAURITANO

You might say that John D’Amato was born with the blues. John was born blue
due to a lack of oxygen caused by a congenital heart defect (which was
corrected at the age of nine). This led John down a different path than most
children, one of seemingly endless doctor visits and medical tests, lonely
hospital stays and painful medical procedures all of which were to determine if
they could correct John’s problem before it killed him. Fortunately through the
grace of God and a doctor at Yale University a surgical procedure was
developed that saved John’s life.

This experience had a profound effect on John
At an early age John learned the lessons of fear, pain and loneliness, but he also
learned the lessons of faith, hope, the grace and power of god and the healing
power of music. Ask John about the blues and his reply will be
“God gave us a way to help ease our pain. Help us forget our problems, our
fears, our mistakes and to cry to God for help and healing. That’s what the blues
is all about”

Tiger Rag - Kid Thomas Valentine Band

Here's some guys who have played dixieland jazz a few times!
Kid Thomas Valentine's band performs "Tiger Rag" at Preservation Hall. Drums: Alonzo Stewart; Trombone: Worthia Thomas; Bass: Chester Zardis; Piano: Sing Miller; Banjo: Emanuel Sayles; Sax: Emmanuel Paul; Clarinet: Willie Humphrey; Trumpet: Kid Thomas Valentine. Shot by Alan Lomax and crew in New Orleans, May 17, 1982.
Thomas Valentine, commonly known as Kid Thomas (3 February 1896 - 18 June 1987) was a jazz trumpeter and bandleader.

Kid Thomas was born in Reserve, Louisiana and came to New Orleans in his youth. He gained a reputation as a hot trumpet man in the early 1920s. Starting in 1926 he led his own band, for decades based in the New Orleans suburb of Algiers, Louisiana. The band was long popular with local dancers.

Kid Thomas had perhaps the city's longest lasting old-style traditional jazz dance band. Unlike many other musicians, Thomas was unaffected by the influence of Louis Armstrong and later developments of jazz, continuing to play in his distinctive hot, bluesy sometimes percussive style. He was always open to playing the popular tunes of the day (even into the rock & roll era) as he thought any good dance bandleader should do, but played everything in a style of a New Orleans dance hall of the early 1920s.

Kid Thomas Valentine started attracting a wider following with his first recordings in the 1950s. His band played regularly at Preservation Hall from the 1960s through the 1980s. Thomas also toured extensively for the Hall, including a Russian tour, and was often a guest at European clubs and festivals, working with various local bands as well as his own. During the 1960s Kid Thomas recorded extensively for the Jazz Crusade label both with his own band and with Big Bill Bissonnette's Easy Riders Jazz Band. He made over 20 tours with the Easy Riders in the U.S. Northeast. Many of these recordings are now available on CD on the GHB or Jazz Crusade labels.

In the mid 1980s, as Thomas's strength started to wane, Preservation Hall management brought in Wendell Brunious, at first as second trumpet; Brunious took over most of the trumpet playing in Thomas's final year or so, though Kid Thomas continued to lead the band, keep rhythm with a slap stick, and blow the occasional chorus if he was feeling up to it.

"Unplugged" Big Shot Reub and the Reloaders@Coyote's Bar/Grill - 2 Big November Shows

Big Shot Reub Unplugged Pic
San Diego's Big Shot Reub and the Reloaders, fronted by Reuben Vigil (center, performing here at the 2011 Adams Ave. Street Fair), also featuring 'Gutbucket' Bo Cantrell (standup bass) and Dan McDowell (harmonica), play two "Unplugged" shows at Coyote's Bar & Grill in Carlsbad Nov. 19 & 26. The band's "Roundhouse Blues" CD is also up for "Bluesforum CD of 2011." Go to www.bluesforum.com to vote.

"Despite his obvious virtuosity, (frontman) Vigil is not a one-man show or grandstander...the Reloaders have a cohesive sound..."Love Comes Knocking" turns up the tempo with some flashy guitar work reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughn...the gloves come off in "Survive," where Vigil channels Jimi Hendrix, complete with reverb, wah wah, and other electronic effects. Blues fans should give this album a serious listen."                                                                                                  SAN DIEGO TROUBADOUR

"San Diego-based Reuben Vigil and his posse (Jodie Hill on bass and Ric Lee on drums) play "almost right"--almost perfectly... Big Shot Reub is a near-master on lead guitar! He displays his prowess with "So Much Inside Me"...his musical arrangements are as varied and melodic as those in blues can get."                  BLUES BLAST

(Saturday, November 19 and Saturday, November 26)

The group's "Roundhouse Blues" is nominated for 2011 CD Of The Year by Bluesforum. Log onto www.bluesforum.com to cast your vote for "Roundhouse Blues" between now and December 15.
The trio fronted by guitarist-vocalist Reuben Vigil has been receiving lots of 'local' love lately:  notably, a stellar review in San Diego Troubadour (quoted above), with a Feature in the North County Times due out November 24 and a review in San Diego Acoustic forthcoming as well.
ROUNDHOUSE BLUES (Hat and Case Music) has received very positive media response since its 2010 release. "I plopped this CD into the player and hoped for the best, and low and behold I was pleasantly surprised just how good of an album "Roundhouse Blues" turned out to be," writes BLUES UNDERGROUND. "Talk about some classy blues...this is the stuff you look long and hard for.  If you like virtuoso guitar this is one album you need to get!," opines  CASHBOX magazine.  "On "Roadhouse Blues," Vigil moves flawlessly and tastefully across the frets to produce a very high quality product for any discerning ear to enjoy," asserts BLUESROCKERS. The album was mastered by multi-Grammy-winning Charlie Watts (renowned for his work on Fleetwood Mac's Rumors among others) and engineered and produced by Glen Laughlin (Dickies, Cherry Bluestorms).
Watch a live performance of "So Much Inside Me" by Big Shot Reub and the Reloaders from The Whiskey A Go-Go in Hollywood last summer here:

Big Shot Reub & The Reloaders (Reuben Vigil, lead guitar-vocals); Jodie Hill (bass); Ric Lee (drums) played and performed in various San Diego bands before coming together to record ROUNDHOUSE BLUES, which in Vigil's words, "is a labor of friendship and getting my friends back to work. In this effort all processes have been near seamless. I am a lucky man."
The songs on ROUNDHOUSE BLUES reflect Vigil's diverse influences - B.B. King, Elvis Costello, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix among them. From opening track "So Much Inside Me" ("a jump-swing tribute to the greats, including Wynone Harris and Louis Jordan," explains Vigil) and melodic "Love's Come Knocking" ("a song designed to comfort a mending heart...speaking what you want and not what you have"); to the Latin-flavored "Viva Bracero" ("a tribute to the unskilled laborers that helped rebuild America after the Great Depression"); and uptempo, toe-tapping "Big Shot Roll" ("a salute to the West Coast swing dancers that are an integral part of the San Diego blues scene"), there is truly something for every Blues lover on ROUNDHOUSE BLUES.

All I Want For Christmas - Tommy Emmanuel

This is an extremely well executed seasonal recording by a virtuoso guitar player. Due to the nature of the music, it isn't going to get blues station airplay but Tommy has done an excellent job at what he set out to do... make a great recording of traditional seasonal standards. I believe that this recording will be very well received as a replacement for the existing "pop singer" standards that are sure to take over the airwaves in about 2 weeks.

BOB CORRITORE GOT HIS MOJO WORKING
2011 has been quite the landmark year for blues impresario Bob Corritore. Things got off to a promising start as Corritore entered the New Year following the announcement of two Blues Music Award nominations in December - one recognizing him for Instrumentalist-Harmonica, and the other, Historical Blues Album of the Year, acknowledged his remarkable recording “Harmonica Blues” on Delta Groove Music. In September, Corritore’s club, The Rhythm Room, celebrated its 20th Anniversary with three nights of great performances that included the Robert Cray Band, Tommy Castro, Long John Hunter, Bob Margolin, Mud Morganfield, Billy Flynn, Barrelhouse Chuck, Dave Riley and many others. To top it all off, Corritore was presented with a Certificate of Special Recognition on September 1, 2011 by Arizona Governor Janice K. Blue Corn Music artist Ruthie Foster New Release - Let It Burn - Review

What a breath of fresh air!! First I have to admit that I am not primarily attracted to solo female vocal oriented recordings (with a few exceptions)but this recording is dynamite! I have listened to it about 4 times and I really like it. There are a number of familiar songs on the recording and if I were to see the titles on the cover and try to make an analysis of whether I would like it I would never give it a second look. Ruthie covers traditional spirituals, The Black Keys, Los Lobos, David Crosby, Johnny Cash, John Martyn and Pete Seeger. Well, looks can be deceiving. There is not only very strong vocals but really hot guitar riffs and very soulful grooves. This recording is absolutely terrific from beginning to end and I highly recommended it! Really!!

You'll Be There - Clyde McPhatter

Clyde McPhatter (November 15, 1932 – June 13, 1972) was an American R&B singer, perhaps the most widely imitated R&B singer of the 1950s and 1960s, making him a key figure in the shaping of doo-wop and R&B. He is best known for his solo hit "A Lover's Question". McPhatter was lead tenor for The Mount Lebanon Singers, a gospel group he formed as a teenager.; and later, lead tenor for Billy Ward and His Dominoes. After his tenure with the Dominoes, McPhatter formed his own group called The Drifters before going solo, leaving a legacy of over 22 years of recording history.

My Next Door Neighbor - Jerry "Boogie" McCain

Jerry McCain, often billed as Jerry "Boogie" McCain (born June 18, 1930, Gadsden, Alabama, United States), is an American electric blues musician, best known as a harmonica player. One of five children of a poor family, many of his siblings became involved in music as well, most notably his brother, Walter, who played drums on some early recordings. McCain picked up the harmonica from itinerant musicians "Chick" and "Shorty" who played at the local bars (and street corners) when he was young.
McCain was a fan of the music of Little Walter and met the artist when, in 1953, he traveled to Gadsden for a show. McCain's recording debut came via Trumpet Records the same year under the name "Boogie McCain", with his brother Walter on drums. The two tracks were "East of the Sun" and "Wine-O-Wine". After recruiting Christopher Collins, who would be with him throughout most of his career, he went on to the Excello label. During his years with the Excello (1955–57) he developed his amplified harmonica style, and unusual blues lyrics. The Excello Label period saw the release of such noted songs as "The Jig's Up", and "My Next Door Neighbor". His later recording for Rex Records "She's Tough" / "Steady" was an inspiration to The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Kim Wilson duplicated McCain's harp work on their version.

McCain also released singles and albums for Columbia, under their Okeh Records label (1962), and for the Nashville based Jewel (1965–68) record label. The complete collection of his Jewel label records are available on a compilation album and, in recent years, several of his early recordings have been released on "retrospective" and compilation CDs, including the Verose Vintage album, Good Stuff. His longest partner, Ichiban Records, also released several retrospectives in the 1990s, including ICH1516-2: Jerry McCain.

In 1989, after a period spent performing and touring with lesser known bands, McCain signed with Ichiban Records, and released the albums: Blues and Stuff, Struttin' My Stuff, and Love Desperado. During his time with Ichiban, McCain also released one record on the Jericho label, This Stuff Just Kills Me, which featured Jimmie Vaughan and Johnnie Johnson. His 1977 release, This Stuff Just Kills Me eventually appeared on the Music Maker label.

In 2002, Ichiban released an album called American Roots: Blues featuring McCain. McCain's abridged work was featured on track 8 of the Rhino Records Blues Masters Volume Four: Harmonica Classics, with an almost lost recording of "Steady". McCain's inclusion in the Blues Master series, was alongside Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Junior Wells, Howlin' Wolf, Snooky Pryor, and George "Harmonica" Smith.

L.R.Phoenix
North Carelian Lake Country Blues

A gypsy woman told my mother “You got a boy child comin’, he gonna be a son of a gun.”

“That’s nice,” she replied. “Aren’t you my midwife?”

“Yes, yes,” the gypsy replied. “I’m just doing this part time for the extra cash. Now your son he’s going to do great things with music.”

“Oh is he going to be rich and famous?”

“No. He’s going to play the blues.”

“Bugger,” my mother said with a little too much disappointment in her voice. “Well at least tell me he’s going to play something popular like Chicago blues...”

“Well.... he’s going to play like the old Mississippi Hill country players like Fred McDowell, Junior Kimbrough and R.L.Burnside.”

“Who?”

“Exactly.”

“Well, when should I tell him about his destiny?”

“Oh, never tell him. He must find his own way.” She looked away and said under her breath, “He’s also going to move from England and live in Finland.”

So after over 30 years of doing more than 50 different jobs, someone heard me playing the guitar and said you play like those Hill country players. I had no idea what he was on about, so he told me. And once I heard those old guys playing I knew I’d found my musical home. So now whatever I play, the ghosts of these people are not too far away.

The Mannish Boys sign with Piedmont Talent

THE MANNISH BOYS MAKING BIG PLANS FOR 2012:
2011 has almost come and gone…and surprisingly without bearing witness to a new album from Delta Groove's all-star house band, The Mannish Boys, but fear not! The Boys plan on heading back into the studio this winter to knockout another pure sonic gem. So who exactly will be gracing the digital grooves on their next shiny new release? Well, that's always a topic of much contention, but we can report on several key returning members, both past and present, including Finis Tasby, Kirk Fletcher, Kid Ramos, Frank Goldwasser, Randy Chortkoff, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott. Making his Mannish Boys album debut this time out however will be powerhouse vocalist Sugaray Rayford. Standing at 6'5", Rayford is a big man, who possesses an even bigger voice, and this past summer has already proven his big stature a worthy addition to The Mannish Boys armament. Also be on the lookout for Candye Kane, along with her current ace guitarist Laura Chavez, to drop in on the proceedings, in addition to special guests Mud Morganfield, Bob Corritore and Jackie Payne.
EXCLUSIVE BOOKING REPRESENTATION W/ PIEDMONT TALENT:
The Mannish Boys have just signed on with the Piedmont Talent booking agency. Piedmont Talent was founded in 1989 and represents a talented roster of artists which includes Candye Kane, Mike Zito, James Cotton, Anson Funderburgh & The Rockets, Johnny Winter, Roomful Of Blues, Debbie Davies and Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater just to name a few. Director Steve Hecht is a two-time recipient of the Keeping The Blues Alive Award for Agent/Manager of the Year, so the Boys will certainly be in good hands.
