CeCe Teneal & Soul Kamotion - #5or5000 - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, #5or5000, by CeCe Teneal & Soul Kamotion and it's terrific! The significance of the title is a simple one: "We would always say whether there's five people or five thousand people in the audience," Teneal says, "and that just kind of stuck with us for this record. We're gonna give the show of a lifetime, we're gonna lay it all on the line, because every person deserves to get what the message is, they're gonna experience the same thing." Opening with 90 MPH, a soul/rock blend, Teneal has great pipes and a super feel. James Adkins on drums, Terrell Kimble on bass, Chris Baptiste on keys and especially the hot guitar riffs of Lavon Rushing and smoking hot drum beat of James Adkins give this track real beef and the backing vocals of the entire band is tight. I think that readers know I like the neo soul movement and this band blends that with Victor Wooten, Frank Zappa...you name it. Very cool. Lumbering, Rockstar, is like Jill Scott with a rock band. Really nice approach with that plucked bass. With a laid back Al Green like approach and a constant bass line, What I'd Do To Get Your Love Back is a terrific radio style track with a strong melody and easy flowing guitar lead. Very nice. One of my favorite tracks on the release is soulful, Lonely (Even When You're Here), not only well executed but beautifully composed. Teneal grabs the phrasing by the nape of the neck and shakes it and the men in the band do an exemplary job on backing vocal, strongly accented by clean guitar soloing by Rushing. Excellent! With a New Orleans style funk, I Betcha Come Back will get you squirming in your seat (if not hoping to your feet). Great slapping snare drumming and rhythm guitar accent the track and perfect delivery by Teneal and excellent blending by the backing vocalists, tied up by slide work Rushing make this track hard not to love. Ballad, Alive starts out with low key, clear vocals by Teneal with keys easily folded in, but the dragon is coming with the addition of powerful guitar, drum and bass attack. Excellent dynamics. Wrapping the release is Home, a smooth soul track with Aretha franklin like phrasing by Teneal and warm spiritual organ backing and some of the sweetest backing vocals I've heard this year. This is an excellent release and one that warrants a good listen. Terrific!

Blues Mountain Records artist: Big Harp George - Uptown Cool.- New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (7/16/18), Uptown Cool, from Big Harp George, and it's tight. Opening with loping shuffle, Down To The Rite Aid, Big Harp George has it running from the first note with his great harp sound, singing duet with Loralee Christensen backed by Chris Burns on piano, Alexander Pettersen on drums, Kid Andersen on bass, Little Charlie Baty on guitar, Michael Peloquin on sax and Mike Rinta on trombone. Very nice. Alternative Facts has a laid back, sauntering feel with real cool harp soloing and great guitar backing by Kid Andersen. Latin fused track, I Wanna Know has strong rhythmic Santana like influences with D'mar on percussion and nice backing vocals by Christensen and warm sax tines by Peloquin, strong bass lines by Andersen and trademark harp soloing by George. On bluesy, Nobody's Listening, Little Charlie really lays in a articulate guitar solo and George some of his best vocals on the release.Standing In The Weather really has a saucy rhythm, augmented by sax work by Peloquin and Andersen chicken picks his way to a really tasty solo on guitar. Bulletproof is another track that nicely showcases the hot hand work of Andersen and George works the lead vocal and harp nicely. Another bluesy track, Cold Snap By The Bay, is one of my favorites on the release with wailing sax by Peloquin, a super piano solo by Burns and some of my favorite guitar sounds by Andersen. Standout instrumental, Uptown Cool, has a really jagged percussion rhythm. courtesy D'Mar with alternating solos by Baty, George and Burns. Very nice. Wrapping the release is easy swing track, Lord Make Me Chaste with gospel like backing by Christensen and Derick Hughes. Bringing on the New Orleans horn styling by Rinta and Peloquin and a taste of falling down the step drumming by Pettersen makes this a fine closer for a cool release.

World Order Entertainment artist: Cyril Neville - Endangered Species: The Essential recordings - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (July 14, 2018), Endangered Species: The Essential Recordings, from Cyril Neville and it's chocked full of New Orleans fused funk. This release is actually one of two releases, the first being a 5 disc retrospective (The Complete Recordings) and the finely distilled 1 disc compilation (The Essential Recordings) which I am reviewing.  Opening with Love Has Got To Win Cyril has a great pumping bass line and with tight rhythms, smart backing vocals and a solid melody, the track is super. Second Line Soca is a polished look at second line rhythms having a bit more sophistication than street music but all of the energy. Very cool. With a funky hip hop rhythm and a floating sax riff, Funkaliscious really moves. One of my favorite tracks on the release is soulful, Calling All Souls with warm lead vocals, a great bass line, super melody and excellent vocal backing.  Running With The Secord Line really has that street feel with trumpets, tuba and wild percussion under frantic yelps. Very cool. R&B track Lift Every Voice has nicely blended vocals featuring Gaynielle Neville, Dane nelson and Yadonna Wise. Wrapping the release is Can't Stop A Dreamer, with electrifying drum rhythms, mellow sax lines and cool bass lines under a solid vocal melody, with excerpts of Dr. MLK interwoven throughout. A solid closer for a solid release.

Hipsterdumpster Records artist: Matty T Wall - Sidewinder - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Sidewinder, from Matty T Wall and is features some hot guitar playing. Opening with Slideride, an electric slide guitar instrumental, Wall wastes no time in kicking the release into high gear backed by Ric Whittle on drums and Stephen Walker on bass. Great start. On Sam Cooke's classic, Change Is Gonna Come, Wall takes the lead on vocal and does quite a nice job. Complimented by Jonas Petersen on strings, Gordon Cant on organ, Walker on bass and Whittle on drums, the setup is perfect for a sensuous guitar solo by Wall making this a choice track. Rocker, Shake It is another stand out track with a driving beat, cool vocals and ravenous guitar lead. Hot! Don Nix's Going Down gets a remake with a bit of a juke on Beck's earlier "rockification" on this classic. Wall pushes it more with a newer blues rock approach and with tight drumming from Whittle and backing vocals by Deli Rowe feels fresh.  My choice of the more pop/vocal tracks is Ain't That The Truth with a great melody and a nice R&B feel. Sophia's Strut is one of my favorite tracks with a true Jeff Beck like approach... no intention to make a radio track but just a cool guitar showcase. Very cool! Shuffle track, Walk Out the Door has a cool groove with Steve Searle on horns giving it real swing. Wrapping the release is Mississippi Kkkrossroades, a rap track which is somewhat disjointed from the rest of the release but with it's tight beat and driven guitar lines is a cool closer for what is a cool release.

Alpha Sun Records artists: Bridget Kelly Band - Blues Warrior - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Blues Warrior, by the Bridget Kelly Band and it's cool. Opening with Lil' Honey Bee, an up tempo shuffle, lead guitar player Tim Fik wastes no time in showing his guitar prowess. Kelly has the lead on vocal backed by Mark Armbrecht on bass and Alex Klausner on drums. Good opener. I like Fik's finesse and dynamics on Stolen, a bluesy ballad featuring Kelly's lead vocals, Mike Hamm on bass and Michael Barady on drums. With it's droning bass line by Armbrecht, No Good Man Blues is one of my favorite tracks on the release with a solid melody and rich guitar lead. Another of my favorites is Alone with its twist on Robert Johnson's Crossroads. Fik powers up in this track showing is pyrotechnical capabilities but it's the basic groove on this track that hits home. Trouble In Texas has a driving boogie beat with traces of Johnny Winter and Billy Gibbons. Jimi influenced Let's Go has a cool flair and Fik again lets it out. He and Kelly balance nicely and Klausner on drums is really tight. Little Mike Markowitz is featured on Blues Inside of Me and his harp work is smoking, stirring the flames under Fik who trades flaming hot riffs. Wrapping the release is Chemo, dedicated to Grandma Kelly, Joyce Hanken and Candye Kane. Kelly's vocals are more focused on this track that anywhere else on the release and Fik is hot as a firecracker making this a solid closer for a solid release.

Big Jake records artist: Paul Filipowicz - Unfiltered - New Release Review - video

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Unfiltered, from Paul Filipowicz and it's terrific. Opening with Magic Sam's Everything Gonna Be Alright, Filipowicz picks up where he left off on Rough Neck Blues Live with his raw but focused blues attack. Filipowicz doesn't have a "Star Search" voice but this guy has grit and feel and I love it! His guitar playing isn't clean but it has real feel with pinched harmonics, chord bends and max blues. Joined by Benny Rickum on harp, Chris Sandoval on drums, and Rick Smith on bass, this band is serious. Excellent opener. Original track, Brand New Hat could easily have been written in the Mississippi Hill Country with it's driving bass line and the blues are deep with Albert Collins like bends, terrific phrasing and sumptuous horn backing by Tom Sobel on sax and Jack Naus on trumpet. Super! Instrumental title track, Unfiltered, has a Freddie King feel with underlying rock structure but the guitar work is all Filipowicz. Waters influenced, Canal Street, has glistening guitar chords and is a nice showcase for Rickum and Sobel. Little Milton's I Found A New Love, is another terrific track with some of Filipowicz's most expressive vocals and dynamic guitar riffs. Just listen to him dig in...what else could you want! One of my favorites on the release. Another original, My Woman, exhibits howlin' guitar riffs and an anchored beat punched up by the horn work of Sobel and Naus. Wrapping the release is R&B feel Riding High, sounding more "hill country" than Mississippi's own Mack Rice's  Mustang Sally.  Filipowicz really knows how to milk this groove. His vocals are perfect and his guitar playing stinging with super horn backing. This is an exceptional release with just a ton of vibe! If you haven't checked this guy out yet...you're missing the boat!

Keeshea Pratt Band - Believe - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Believe, from Keeshea Pratt Band and I really like it! Opening with soul fused, Make It Good, Keeshea's vocals let you know that you are listening to something special. Pratt has a solid horn section of Misaki Nishidate on trumpet, Dan Carpenter on sax and James Williams III on trumpet and Brian Sowell on lead guitar, Shawn Allen on bass and Nick Fishman on drums. Cool opener. Kicking it open on Have A Good Time Y'all is a romping and rolling blues shuffle with slick guitar lead, a great bass line and smoking hot sax work.  In The Mood has a great bass line and Pratt is all over this track with rich vocals. WahWah guitar and funky rhythm makes this such a great track. It's Too Late is soulful and sassy. Pratt has such great phrasing and feel and the horns are spot on, accented by excellent piano and organ work. With a snappy New Orleans drum beat, Shake Off These Blues, the band rolls into a rocking R&B number with hot sax, trumpet and guitar solos giving this track real spank! Shuffle track, Easily Replaced gives Carpenter and Sowell the stage for some real nice riffs supporting Pratts vocal lead. Very nice. Check out Monkey See, Monkey Do and it's R&B roll. Pratt has great attitude, delivering the blues that way you really want it and a pumped up horn section really delivers with stinging support by Sowell on guitar. Excellent! Just when you think you've heard what it's all about, Pratt comes with more on title track, Believe and it's deep funk bass line. Her vocals adapt nicely to every string of the blues and she's in total control, with horns on high alert. Very very nice!  Wrapping the release is a live version of slow blues number, So Bad Blues clocking in at over 8 minutes. With Pratt sounding as if she is on a tower singing the gospel and Sowell balancing her on guitar over the excellent bass work of Allen, this is an excellent closer for an excellent release! You must check this out if you love the blues!

Allman Goldflies Band - Second Chance - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Second Chance, by Allman Goldflies Band and it's interesting. I know that first thing that will cross your mind is what relation this band has to the Allman Brothers Band and it has a few. First of all, vocalist/keyboard player Gary Allman is Gregg and Duane's cousin and David Goldflies played drums with the Allmans during the Enlightened Rogues/Reach For The Sky/ Brothers of the Road sessions. Opening with southern flavored shuffle, Ever Been So Lonely Baby, you can certainly hear the Allman Brothers influence with Joe Weiss on bass and Luther Wamble on lead guitar. A definite radio track, Standing In The Georgia Rain has a memorable melody and solid instrumentation. Southern's All I Ever Want To Be is another radio track with a solid hook and lyrics that would certainly appeal to the southern demographic. Fiddle tune, Fadiddle, has a country rhythm but an eastern European flavor. Very nice. Pretty Green Eyes is typical of the much of the release with an almost Marshall Tucker melodic country rock feel. Lightly funky, Can't Turn Back Now, has a real cool rhythm just the right balance making it one my favorites on the release. Wrapping the release is spiritually flavored, When Jesus Calls, with fully chorused backing. melodic guitar runs by Wamble are really nice adding just the right amount of salt to mix.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Deb Ryder - Enjoy The Ride - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Enjoy The Ride, from Deb Ryder and is has a great feel. Opening with high stepper, A Storm's Coming, Deb Ryder is back sounding as powerful as ever. Johnny Lee Schell and Coco Montoya on lead guitar plays nicely off of the steady beat of Ric Ryder on bass, Mike Finnigan on keys and Tony Braunagel on drums. Exceptional ballad, For The Last Time, is a terrific showcase for Ryder's voice and also features Finnigan on vocal as well with the sweet guitar lead of Montoya. What You Want From Me blends New Orleans feel with pure gospel vocals from Maxanne lewis, Ricky Nelson, Leslie Smith and Kudisan Kai Regalot. Very nice. Got To Let It Go has a real nice BB King style groove featuring Cain and Ryder on a cool vocal duet and slick guitar lead. Sweet Sweet Love has a tight Latin beat with nice piano work by Finnigan and featuring fat guitar riffs by Debbie Davies. Wrapping the release is Red Line featuring the strong harp work of Pieter van Der Pluijm. With Schell on bass and lead guitar, this is a solid closer for a solid release.

Gretchen and the Pickpockets - Falling Rising - New release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Falling Rising, from Gretchen and the Pickpockets and it's a adventurous mix of pop, jazz and rock. Opening with Keep Talking, vocalist Gretchen Klempa has solid piped, backed by Mike Klempa on bass, Ryan O'Connell on trumpet, Tom O'Connell on drums, Richie Smith on guitar and Diego Tunjano on sax. Bluesy, Easy On My Heart has a real nice feel with sensitive vocals and a powerful horn attack. One of my favorite tracks on the release, Devil's Due has all of the radio appeal of the Eagles without all of the hours of overplaying a cleaner, sassier lead vocalist, and punchy horns for a fresher feel. With a funky, Memphis kind of sound, Let Me Do My Thing, has a nice blend of jazz, soul and pop. A little more traction is added by Ryan on trumpet solo and the band kicks it almost to New Orleans sound. Very nice. Another adventurous track is Take Flight with a real Latin (Rhumba?) rhythm. Extended horn soloing gives the track wings.  A real mover. Far, Far We Go has a jagged rhythm and tight drums melded together with lush vocals and warm horn work adding even more depth to the repertoire of the band. Wrapping the release is Time And Time Ago, a light sounding track with real teeth. Doubled vocals, a deep bass line by Mike, airy trumpet work by Ryan, twisted guitar sounds by Smith and tight snappy drum work by Tom makes this an excellent closer.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Billy Price - Reckoning - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Reckoning, from Billy Price and it's quite good. Opening with soul fused blues number, 39 Steps, Billy Price has surrounded himself with a who's who of musicians including Kid Andersen on guitar, Alex Pettersen on drums, Jerry Jemmott on bass, and Jim Pugh on keys for a solid radio style start. Dreamer is a strong track with a really nice bass line by Jemmott, nice pinched soloing by Andersen, and excellent backing vocals by Lisa Leuschner Andersen and Rusty Zinn. Very cool. Title track, Reckoning, has a real nice feel and an almost Al Green vibe. Price's vocals are smooth and warm keyboard work by Pugh, clean trumpet lines by Konstantins Jemeljanovs, lead bass lines by Jemmott and slick riffs by Andersen make this one of my favorite tracks on the release.  Another of my picks for the release is One and One, with its super melody, some of Price's best vocals on the release and cool sax work by Johnny Bones. Funky soul number, Never Be Fooled Again, has a tight bass line from Jemmott and warm backing vocals by Andersen and Courtney Knott. With a laid back attack, Kid Andersen lays in some mighty tasty licks on guitar. Expert Witness stays in the funky stream with power horn work by Nancy Wright. Very nice! R&B track, Love Ballad could easily have been a strong radio player in the early seventies with it's rich vocals, melody and that tale tell sitar work by Andersen. Lisa's backing vocals on this track are particularly nice. Wrapping the release is Your Love Stays With Me with a country blues feel. Warm horn work, coupled with Prices own smooth vocals over Jemmott's bass line set this track apart and Bones sax solo is really sweet. Cool closer to a cool release.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Bob Corritore & Friends - Don't Let The Devil Ride! - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (releasing today), Don't Let The Devil Ride!, from Bob Corritore & Friends and it's super. Opening with Willie Buck's shuffle track, Went Home This Morning, Bob Corritore on harp joins up with Willie Buck on lead vocal, Mojo Mark on guitar, Troy Sandow on bass and Brian Fahey on drums for a solid opener. On Little Walter's Tell Me Mama, Oscar Wilson is on lead vocal and Corritore lays out a real nice harp solo with Priimetime Smith on guitar, Henry Grey on piano and Johnny Rapp on guitar. Alabama Mike has the lead on Laundromat Blues and with really expressive lower octave work from Corritore, particularly nice soloing from Atkinson on guitar and strong piano work from Welch making this one of my favorites on the release. Corritore original, Fork In The Road, features Oscar Wilson on vocal, with Henry Grey on piano and Johnny Rapp on guitar with Corritore in in mostly a strong supportive role choosing cool riffs over long solos...his general trademark. Bob Welch's rockabilly guitar riffs on Lovey Dovey Lovey One set the stage and Corritore sails on harp. Another terrific track. Particularly strong vocals by Alabama Mike set title track, Don't let the Devil Ride! with complimentary guitar work by Danny Michel. Willie Mae features the vocal and guitar work of Bill "Howl-N-Madd" Perry and with it's Latin rhythm, it simmers. George Bowman has the lead on I Was A Fool with Chris James adding tasty texture on guitar. Wrapping the release is Thundering and Raining featuring Tail Dragger on lead vocal, Grey on piano and Bob Stroger on bass. Rockin' Johnny Burgin and Corritore balance guitar and harp nicely for a solid ending to a real cool release.

Bizarre Records artist: Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Are You One Of Jay's Kids? - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' work, Are You One Of Jay's Kids, and it's creative, strange and cool. Screamin' Jay was a showman, being carried on stage in a coffin and emerging with a bone in his nose, but he was serious about his music. I first became aware of Hawkins' work through CCR and then later Leslie West but this guy way really hanging it all out there. Disc one opens with Louis Jordan's Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby, with his dramatic vocals but not at all lacking with production quality or musical integrity with tight backing vocals and clever guitar soloing. Jump track, I Feel Alright is played pretty straight with aggressive drums and classic 50's vocal backing and cool guitar work and a hot sax solo. His ultimate money track, I Put A Spell On You, gets an odd dance mix with Matt Guitar Murphy style guitar rhythm and rapping backing. BB King's track, I Hear You Knocking, made famous by Dave Edmunds has a solid bass line reinforcing it's boogie style but with Jay's vocals and female vocals, this track is a cool rocker. Quirky tracks like Ignant and Shit and jungle beat driven Swamp Gas, Voodoo Priestess with it's sultry sax work and Strokin' with it's wild lyrics keep you thinking. Bluesiest track on disc one is Another Pain with outright blues guitar. Strong. Willie Mabon's I Don't Know has a powerful swing and Jay is riding high cool vocal backing and tight rhythm. On Ray Charles' I Believe, Jay digs in and belts out the blues.

A strong rhythm, hot guitar riffs and super sax drive opening track on disc 2, Call The Plumber. Slow blues track, Sherilyn Fenn, is so out there with Jay fanaticizing verbally about Fenn. I know that it's hard to believe, but Jay does an even more blatant fantasy song about Amy Fisher.... yup! When You Walked Out the Door follows the Muddy Waters, Chicago format with another honest to goodness blues track. Laced with cool guitar work and harp, very cool. Fourteen Wives rings a little strong with the rumor that Jay had between 57 and 75 children (hence the name of the cd) and solid horn work is smooth as silk. Make You Mine is a cool shuffle with harp, a vocal duet and slide guitar. Possibly Jay's best attempt to be weird which actually sounds normal. Oh yeah, he gets back to standard on Shut Your Mouth, a quirky track that is all Jay. Wrapping the release is Clam Bake, a rock 'n roller with a great beat. With super piano and guitar, Jay just leads the way having a blast. This is definitely jay at his wildest. Check it out.

Panache Records artist: Savoy Brown featuring Kim Simmonds - You should have been there! - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, You should have been there! from Savoy Brown featuring Kim Simmonds and it's a super exhibition of Savoy Brown live and on top of it's game, recorded live at the Yale in Vancouver on 2.23.03. Opening with When It Rains from their 2003 release, Strange Dreams, Kim is handling stinging lead guitar and vocal, backed by David Malachowski on guitar, Gerry Sorrentino on bass and Dennis Cotton on drums. I have seen this unit and it is tight. On slow blues, Where Has Your Heart Gone?, also from Strange Dreams, Simmonds gets into such a nice guitar groove that this 11 plus minute track seems to be over in short minutes. Simmonds' phrasing is excellent as always and his ingenuity on this night was spot on. On classic, Poor Girl, from on of my all time favorite SB releases, Looking In, Simmonds literally blows the doors off. You like contemporary blues rock. This is it! Excellent! On Jimmie Rodgers' Blues Like Midnight, Simmonds takes it way down with only a sliver of a back up, playing Delta style and singing the blues. Winding up for the grand finale, Street Corner Talking from the album of the same name, followed by Hellbound Train, also from an album of the same name, are two of Savoy Browns bet known tracks and and one hell of one listening experience to spend about 25 minutes. Now I have to say, 25 minutes seems like a long time, but I listened to this release at least 5 times today and it's going into my car. it's the best of Savoy Brown live today and I highly recommend it!

Spencer MacKenzie - Cold November - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Cold November, from Spencer MacKenzie and it's solid. Opening with light funk rocker, Fine Place To Start, Mackenzie shows real promise on lead vocal and guitar. Joined by Miles Evans on piano, Al Duffy on bass, Sean O'Grady on drums, Brant Parker on lead guitar, Dave Dunlop on trumpet, Peter Hysen on trombone, Jay Davidson on sax this is a polished opener. On Move On Down The Track, MacKenzie blends in a bit of country drive and Parker on slide enriches the sound even further. The title track, Cold November is a bluesy ballad with soulful vocals, a nice melody and strong guitar riffs. Very nice. One of my release favorites is Voices Echoing with a funky jazz feel and boppy keyboard by Evans reminiscent of Brian Auger. Haunt Me is a cool shuffle track with real radio appeal. Backing vocals by Rochelle Harrison and Camille Harrison add yet another dimension to this smooth jazzy approach with light and breezy solos by Mackenzie and Evans. Another of my favorites on the release is Robert Cray's, You Move Me with a great bass rumble by Duffy. Traces of Albert King are in MacKenzie's guitar riffs and Evans' piano work weaves in just right. Wrapping the release is Gary Clark Jr.'s Next Door Neighbor Blues with understated slide work throughout and resonator (sound) solo riding high on top of what is really a stripped down rocker. very nice closer to a solid release.
