Gonzalo Bergara - Zalo's Blues - New Release review

I just received the newest release, Zalo's Blues from Gonzalo Bergara and it's terrific! Opening with instrumental, Drawback, a quick paced shuffle, you'd swear you were listening to Gatemouth Brown featuring Gonzalo on Guitar, Mariano D'Andrea on bass and Maximiliano on drums. These guys are hot and flaming! On rock and roller, Drinking, Chuck berry Style, Gonzalo steps up to the mic and shows his appreciation of fine rock. This stuff is pure and fun ... dig the riffs! This release doesn't have any weak spots and this is one of my favorites on the release. Singing My Song puts me in mind of a song, Made Into A Movie, from one of the best (sleeper) ZZ Top albums, XXX. If you don't have it....get it! This is a dramatic ballad with smoking hot emotional blues guitar soloing. Excellent! Opening with Jimmy Reed himself, You Don't Have To Go is augmented by the band and Gonzalo's vocals are sticky and the pace is amazing. This is the blues...yes! Excellent! Dirty Socks is a great track with like a blend of like Jeff Beck and ZZ Top sounds with a funky beat and excellent bass work. Gonzalo really gets into a great groove showing just a band is supposed to do with an instrumental track! Really switching gears, Gonna Go, is full out country truck driving music with "chicken pickin" and "train drums". Guitar soloing is nothing less than great. Yes...this is cool! Nice Texas style blues with a rocking lope is what makes No More click with solid vocals and fresh guitar riffs from Gonzalo over a tight bottom. Super. Another flame thrower, Been Runnin' is just scorching with jazz lines coming like a freight train. I would have loved to have seen this guy on stage with Gatemouth. Excellent!!! Woosh is a super track that sneaks up on you. Dynamics to burn, this track has super vocals, a great melody and raw guitar riffs that will throw you back. Excellent! Levi has a great groove and builds over a twist on a simple riff. An excellent instrumental, this is a super showcase of what a talented guitar player and writer can do, given the freedom to express himself! Bulls-eye! Ines is a beautiful instrumental track, subdued in nature but with a haunting melody and twin guitar leads blended just perfectly. The lead soloing is tight and expressive. How many times can I say excellent! Wrapping the release is Won't Stay With You, a cool acoustic number with Zalo accompanying his own vocals. Done in more of a modern Piedmont style, it has traces of Jimmy Cox's Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out. Excellent closer. This may be the best release that I've heard this year. With the excellent album cover, this is the entire package... get it now and tell your friends. You can thank me later!

Daniel DeVita - Southside Blues - New release Review

I just received the newest release, Southside Blues from Daniel DeVita and it's great! The feeling starts on the front of the cover with a blues player sitting in a dark wood trimmed room, surrounded by vintage guitars and amp equipment, holding a vintage mic and wearing blue and orange shoes. This screams old style Chicago! On yeah, and there is a mono stereo compatible note on the CD. Nice touch! This is the attention that DeVita has put into this really cool release. Opening with John Brim's, You Got Me Where You Want Me, DeVita leads on vocal and guitar, backed by Mariano D'Andrea on bass, Gabriel Cabiaglia on drums and featuring Nicolas Smoljan on harp. This track smells like Chicago! Excellent! On Little Walter's, One Of These Mornings, DeVita really lays out some tasty guitar riffs and this release is rolling. Muddy Waters' Standing Around Crying is up next and DeVita really nails it. The soulful vocals, the slinky slide and howlin' harp... excellent! Willie Dixon's Good Advice is a bit more stripped down with DeVita and Gabriel Gratzer on vocal and guitar. Simple and clean. Another John Brim track, Be Careful What You Do, really shuffles. Smoljian really digs in on harp pulling great tone and DeVita shows that he has been woodsheding his riffs because they are tight! Little Johnny Jones' Hoy Hoy has a great swing and with harp and guitar solos, this track nails it! Sonny Boy Williamson's, Cross My Heart is one of my favorite tracks on the release with excellent harp phrasing and warm guitar chords. Very nice! Robert Johnson's Walkin' Blues is kept simple and primitive with DeVita on vocal and acoustic slide guitar and Damian M Duflos on harp. This is a special track and nicely executed. Baby Face Leroy Foster's Red Headed Woman is another super showcase for Smoljan on harp and DeVita keeps it simple and tight. Very nice! Snooky Pryor's I'm Getting Tired has deep feeling and solid harp work. RL Burnside's Poor Black Mattie has an extremely rural feel. I really like the handling of this track and it's authentic feel! Sunnyland Slim's Farewell Little Girl is a cool choice giving another dimension with a more blended overall sense. Memphis Slim's Mother Earth has a really warm feel giving DeVita a super chance to dig in on guitar. This is another of my favorite tracks on the release with just that something extra special. Another Willie Dixon track, Violent Love, maintains a raw 40's style "Hot Club" sound which sets the stage nicely for a hot Sunnyland Slim Be Mine Alone wrapper. Smolian really steps up on this track joined by Mauro Diana on guitar and vocals. This is an excellent recreation of the Chicago blues sound and a record that I personally enjoy very much. Happy New Year!!

Playin' The Blues (By The Rules) - The Jackpot$

I have recently received a copy of a debut release from a new blues band from Argentina. The band is called The Jackpot$ and the recording is called Playin' The Blues (By The Rules). Eleven tracks (plus a bonus) in all this is a cd to hear! I have been listening to this recording for a few days and I have to say...It's great!! Sure, there are some things on here that seem unusual to my ear but I really like this cd. The cd has a familiar sound but I won't try to box it in because it is alive. Black Train Boogie is a strong harp driven track with solid vocals and solid rhythm. Treat Me Right is an upbeat boogie blues with that heavy bass and drum rhythm. The harp is always present and strong. This song also has a really cool almost Butterfield Blues Band sounding guitar solo. I don't know if you're getting me but this is good. I'm Going To Pawn My Guitar is a cool blues over the Latin beat which has a very cool guitar solo and some unconventional riffs to get your attention. Jump for D.D. as is called is a jump blues and very reminiscent of some of the fun players like Gatemouth and strong harp licks. I really like this. Am I being clear? I really like this! Cotton Blues is a loping blues with that vintage style guitar taking the melody lead. Although I don't have the band list, they are all very proficient and nobody is trying to prove anything. The band sounds very comfortable and everything is mixed spot on. You want to hear that double stop guitar blues playing Texas style... here it is. I'm Gonna Buy Me A Pistol really gets gritty with the guitar and the part is handled really elegantly. The harp is always present and soulful. I've Got What You Need stays the course with the vintage style blues and again with a very strong showing on the guitar (If I didn't know better I'd think someone snuck a ringer in on me. Again the harp solo on the track is very solid. My Baby's Fine is another excuse to play a fine blues song. I'm glad that all recordings aren't this good because it's hard to highlight something where all of the tracks are consistently good. Easy Baby finally breaks the mold with more of a blues influenced rock track. Again really enjoyable. Jump and Stomp is exactly what it sounds like. This entire recording appears to be influenced more by the earlier generations players than a morphing of the later players. It just sounds so much more fresh. I mean the basic track and the guitar playing is just so crisp. Last up is Jigsaw Shuffle. Great harmonica lead jam and a great finish to a great cd. If you have heard a better overall debut album recently...send it to me!

Bluesiana - DEMIAN BAND

Demian Dominguez is the most promising Blues/Rock artist ever to emerge from the Latin American, and Spanish cultures. His musicianship and virtuosity sounds so authentically Blues that you would think him a native of the Southern United States, rather than his native Argentina and current home in Barcelona, Spain. Not since the British invasion of the late sixties have we seen a guitarist/vocalist outside the U.S. so adroit at interpreting this indigenous American music and this is amply demonstrated on Demian Band's newest CD release, "Tattoo'd Fish". The Blues may have originated in the U.S., but clearly it now belongs to the world!

A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Demian has been devoted to his music and his musical career since the age of 12. At the young age of
15 he achieved a unique opportunity, and received excellent reviews, when he was chosen as the opening artist for Jimmie Vaughan, Los Lobos and Roy Rogers at Huracan Stadium in Buenos Aires, in a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Demian cultivated his artistry in the Buenos Aires music scene, sharing the stage with well-known Argentine musicians such as Alejandro Lerner, Ricardo Mollo (Divididos), Pappo, Jorge Pinchevsky, Pappo, Willy Quiroga (Vox Dei), Alejandro Medina (Manal), Hector Starc, Walter Sidoti (Patricio Rey y Los Redonditos De Ricota), and others, culminating in his being awarded the ?Contribution to Blues? award from the General San Martin Theatre of Buenos Aires. In 1997, MTV aired a 60 minute special about Demian, entitled ?MTV Outside? (?MTV Afuera?). Subsequently, he wrote the music for a Toyota TV spot, played nightclubs and concerts throughout Argentina, performed live guest spots on radio, and recorded two successful solo albums with Demian Band until he moved to Barcelona, Spain in 2002.

In Barcelona Demian reformed Demian Band and frequently appeared with world renowned Blues guitarist/singer Bernard Allison and international Rock legend Elliot Murphy while performing in prominent European clubs and Blues festivals. In 2007 he recorded a DVD, produced by Bad Music and the Barcelona Blues Society, in the legendary Sala Apolo de Barcelona, and followed this with a tour in Germany in 2008. Demian?s previous successful CD, "Devil by My Side", featured Fernando Tejero on keyboards, and Bernard Allison on slide guitar and vocals on "If You Say You Love Me." The CD received wide critical and popular acclaim in both the U.S. and Europe, reaching #1 on the Blues radio charts in the U.S. In addition to the extraordinary talents of Demian, on his latest and 5th CD release, "Tattoo'd Fish", Demian Band consists of the masterly bass and keys of Tito Bonacera and the driving percussion of drummer Roger Serrahima. "Tattoo'd Fish" cooks with Demian Band's usual high-energy and Demian's signature blistering intensity, and combines original tunes with new arrangements of classics from the traditional Blues repertoire.
