When Tommy Marsh and Crooked Eye Tommy released Butterflies & Snakes in August of 2015, little did the Ventura County-based blues musician realize how well the band's debut album would be received. An indication of what lie ahead: Winning "Best Blues Band" at the 2015 Ventura County Music Awards this past Summer. Tommy's third consecutive VCMA is quite the accomplishment, considering the number of talented blues artists who call Ventura County their home!

In less than five months, Butterflies & Snakes has ascended as high as #30 on the National Roots Music Report Blues Chart, a strong barometer for radio airplay where hundreds of on-air deejays submit their weekly playlists to. For the week beginning December 6, B&S was a very respectable #21 on the RMR Top 50 California Album Chart. Two singles off the record - "Crooked Eye Tommy" and "I Stole The Blues" - were at #14 and #38 respectively on the California RMR Blues Singles Chart (Week of November 29). Butterflies & Snakes is making waves Down Under, too, moving up to #5 on the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Charts International Blues Chart for the month of November, 2015  up from #8 in October.

In September, Butterflies & Snakes was featured on back-to-back weeks by nationally-syndicated radio show, Blues Deluxe, heard on over one-hundred terrestrial stations with a 1.5 million listenership. "Depend on Crooked-Eye Tommy to set you straight about great blues and good music!", said Blues Deluxe Host, David Johnson.

Most Recently, Influential taste-maker Blues 411 bestowed Butterflies & Snakes with a "Best Debut Release" nomination, while also making their "Baker's Dozen" for the week of December 7, 2015. "Crooked Eye Tommy and his release ‘Butterflies & Snakes’ will please ya in a rockin’ soulful way", asserts Blues411 head honcho, Chefjimi Patricola.

Butterflies & Snakes made waves in the UK this year, as well:  the eleven-song disc is nominated for a 2016 Doc's Blues Award in the "Best Band" category.

In January, Butterflies & Snakes proudly represents the Ventura County Blues Society in the "Best Self-Produced CD" category at the 2016 International Blues Challenge (IBC), the famed yearly competition in Memphis bringing the world's best blues artists from sixteen countries across the globe together where they compete for "best of" honors.

"Stories told only the way bluesmen do, with reverence and soul"

"Packed full of authentic blues, sensual and raw"

"Sticks to the Blues while stretching what the genre can hold"

"Impressive specimen of dynamic guitar playing and lively rhythm...this band means business right from the start"

"Slinky slide guitars, arpeggio riffs, spot-on vocal harmonies...terrific introduction to a band ready to break out of Southern California and bring their brand of Blues and Roots music to the masses"

"Brings a comfortable approach to their art with vocals and guitars that tell the story convincingly"

"Marsh brothers are both fine guitar players, as heard when Tommy plays the slide on the opening number 'Crooked Eye Tommy', while brother Paddy shows good range and a touch of soulfulness on the snaky blues 'Come On In'"

Roadhouse Redemption Records artist: Georgie Bonds - Hit It Hard - New Release review

I just received the newest release, Hit It Hard, from Georgie Bonds and it's a mover! Opening with Pickin' Your Bones, the band is hitting it hard with Buddy Cleveland on harp, Andy Haley on drums, Walter Runge on organ and Neil Taylor on guitar, Bond is leading the way on lead vocal. Great opener. Funky, Let's Get Down, has a great groove with Runge on piano backing Bonds' lead vocal and Vanessa Collier and Dave Renz trading sax solos. Corey Paternoster and Haley jazz it up a bit with some jazzy rhythms as well. Sentenced To The Blues is a solid down the middle slow blues and has the best of Bonds' vocals. Runge's organ work creates tension in the track, Cleveland lays out a really nice harp solo and Taylor hits a stiff guitar solo of his own. Very nice! Shuffle track, Not Tired Of Living, has an almost Elvin Bishop strut. Bonds has a cool swing and Taylor's guitar work, coupled with Cleveland's harp highlights leads to a full group chorus by Cleveland, Collier, Gina Burnett and Mike Bardzik. Come Back Baby is a blues fused rocker with a great bass line from Prince. Bonds vocals are inspired and Cleveland trades harp riffs with Runge on piano for a cool track. Ballad, The Soul Of A Man, is a really nice composition with Bonds' solid vocal work trimmed by Cleveland on harp. The use of Wurlitzer by Runge on this track was a nice choice accenting the feel of the track. Taylor plays a nicely articulated solo of his own giving the track a blusier feel. Very nice. Butter Your Biscuit and a cool shuffle with Bonds' vocal just off the beat. I really like when someone does this well and Bonds hits it perfectly. Taylor steps up with some of his coolest riffs on the release and Cleveland lays it out flat, backed by Runge on keys making this one of my favorite tracks on the release. Deadly Poison has a cool back beat and nice bass lines by Prince. Again, Runge chooses Wurlitzer for the perfect effect and Bonds, working with Collier and Matecki get the vocals spot on. Lumbering blues, Paid Vacation, sets a nice pace and solid bass lines by Prince and the freewheelin' vocals by Bonds really opens the door. Harp work by Cleveland and guitar work by Taylor makes this a super track. R&B track, Blues Job, is quick paced and reinforced by the sax work of Renz and Collier. Taylor steps up with some nice fluid guitar riffs on this track and ultra sassy sax lines make this another of my favorites on the release. Wrapping the release is Another Year, a quiet ballad featuring soft blending of Taylor's guitar work, Bonds vocals and Cleveland's harp. This is a nice conclusion to a cool release.

Wette Music artist: Wendy DeWitt with Kirk Harwood - Getaway - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Getaway, from Wendy DeWitt with Kirk Harwood and it swings. Opening with Sonoma County, Wendy DeWitt really gets the piano rolling and Kirk Harwood creates a New Orleans rhythm. Super horn backing from Mike Rinta (trombone), Tom Poole (trumpet) and Keith Crossan (tenor sax) really punches up the track. With an easy night club swing, the horn section opens up the floor for DeWitt on vocal and smooth piano. Crossan rips a nice sax solo capping the track. On bluesy ballad, Sometimes I Wonder, DeWitt really digs in on piano giving it a cool feel. Built To Last has super piano work over a cool blues line. Steve Freund adds some really tasty guitar work on this track giving it an additional dimension. Chuck Willis' Feel So Bad gets an easy swing with Freund laying in some tasty blues riff, paired with DeWitt's piano work and Steve Evans on bass for a nice overall sound. Big Joe Turner's 29 Ways has a light poppy funk and Freund plays off the rhythm with additive guitar riffs, also slipping in some shimmery guitar lines. Very cool. On Folks Like You, Harwood and DeWitt share lead vocals in a Jimmy Rogers style blues. Freund steps up again with some tasty riffs over DeWitt's excellent piano work giving the track that extra something. I Want To Believe You, is my choice of the release with a strong bass line from Evans and DeWitt's best vocals. Freund steps up again with some really tasty guitar lines nicely complimenting DeWitt's piano work for a well balanced track. Rocker, Never Be Too Much, has a solid James Brown back beat with DeWitt's piano style on the melodic soloing. Very cool. Trouble is a cool boogie with DeWitt pushing the train. Her piano work on this track is hot and the horns really punch it at just the right time. Very nice! Wrapping the release is Everybody's Crying for Something, an easy paced blues rocker.

Ruf Records artists: Blues Harp Women - Various Artists - New Release Review

I just received a super release of women harp players, Blues Harp Women, and it shows talent across opening with Harmonica Girl, Paula Rangell leads a lively shuffle track with crisp harp playing and her band the Pontiacs. Roxy Perry is up next with Roadmaster. Backed by a cool horn section and cool harmonies this track has real punch. Stacy Jones Band grinds down with Heavy Water, a swampy lumbering track. With strong vocals and warm guitar tones, Jones plays a real nice complimentary harp part over the track. Very nice. Big Mama Thornton blows a real nice Down Home Shakedown reinforcing that she was as much a harper as a singer. Lynnann Hyde plays harp and sings, accompanied by acoustic guitar on 30-20 Blues in vert traditional style. Down To The Hollow by Trina Hamlin is really interesting with nice breathing techniques and rich vocals. Tracy K performs Stop! Wait A Minute with a rocky attack on the blues. Her harp techniques are slick and driving. Very cool! Slow ballad, One More Lie, features Teresa "T-Bird" Lynne on vocal and guitar. Lynne plays a real nice solo on harp and her guitar player digs deep as well. Very nice! Octavia has a 70's rock style with guitar, harp and sax all playing hot riffs along with her Grace Slick style vocals. Kat Baloun takes the R&B route with organ driving the pace. With a bit of funk slick guitar solos and harp work carries the track high. Beth Kohnen plays Ain't Easy keeping the blues soft and easy on harp with bass and guitar accompaniment. Fresh! Jane Gillman does a nice vocal duet with acoustic slide guitar and spoons as rhythm. Zola Moon stomps with authority singing Mechanical Beast. With solid guitar work and searing harp tones the band blazes it's path. Mattie Phifer lays down a real nice blues rhythm on Please Call Daddy and sassy vocals. I really like her blues style on this track giving the track an authentic blues rock feel. Wrapping disc one is Dorothy Jane "DJ" Gosper with a slow San Francisco style blues number, Sadder Than Sad. DJ puts everything into it with strong support by organ, blows an incredibly soulful harp to close.

Jenny Kerr opens disc 2 with Cash Is King, a heavy footed rocker and flanging guitar riffs. Kerr's confident vocal style, a rock solid bottom and aggressive guitar styling makes this one of my favorites on the release. Cheryl Arena steps up with Blues Got Me along the lines of King's Hunter. With deft guitar soloing, solid vocals and raw harp riffs this track has a cool blues feel. Annie Raines leads off Lookin' Good with John Mayall like harp work and light guitar rhythm. This track builds steam as it goes and is a very nice instrumental addition to the set. On boogie track, He's Gone, Marion Turner grinds in with harp and vocal. This is a really basic blues track and with few frills hits the nail on the head. Very nice! Terry Leonino's Meet Me Where They Play The Blues is a light and breezy jazz number with warm chords and floating vocals. Nice and easy. Boogie, Crazy Maisie, by Dana Dixon, really grinds in with solid harp work and a driving bottom. Her vocals are real and the harp/guitar interplay creates excitement. Beata Kossowska lays down an interesting track, Everybody's Dancing with a Latin rhythm. With almost Spanish style guitar work and soulful harp soloing, this track is an interesting look at another side of the blues. Jill Fromewick really makes the harp sing on Take The Lead and her vocals are pure and rich. Very nice track. Diana Redlin gets things hopping with a high energy, Never Leave Me Home. With snappy drum work and a guitar mantra, solid sax work and fever pitched harp work this track hits the read running. Classically trained, Christelle Berthon turns in the most beautiful harp rendition of Summertime accompanied by piano. This track is excellent! Judy Rudin does her blues with a country 2 step feel blended with Chicago harp styling on Hit The Road. With steel guitars and country rhythm, Rudin knows how to play the blues. Cecilia Loforti's, Doctor C, has a bit of funk and her vocal styling borders on Blondie's on Rapture. A playful little number, Loforti knows her way around the harp. Maria Coyote's Rikers Island, follows a standard blues format but with a loose worldly San Francisco twist. Interesting. Jackie Merritt takes an easy pace with acoustic backing. Her harp work is nicely complimentary to her vocals on Fast Food Mama. Big Nancy brings the whole package with a great voice and soulful harp work on Bring It On Home (To Me). A casual pace and clever guitar work, this is a real nice track. Wrapping the release is Rhonda Alla Blue, by Rhonda Rucker. A traditional blues number with traditional blues style riffs backed by acoustic guitar, this is a terrific closer for this diversely bluesy release.

Cleopatra Records release: A Double Dose Of Blues - Various Artists - New Release review

I just received a cool 2 cd release, A Double Dose Of Blues from Cleopatra Records and it boasts a who's who of blues and guitar giants. Opening the first disc (From Clarksdale To Heaven - Remembering John lee Hooker) is blues giant John Lee Hookers daughter and blues star, Zakiya Hooker on I Want To Hug You, supported is a stately manner by Johnnie Johnson on piano, Bobby Murray on guitar, Tony Cook on synth guitar, David Daniel on bass, Marlon Gren on drums and Victor Puebla on percussion. This shuffle track is really nicely balanced between the power of Hooker's vocals and Johnnie Johnson's key work. Jack Bruce and Gary Moore team up on I'm In The Mood backed by Gary Husband. Gary Moore really lays out a nice solo on this track with Bruce thumping away behind him. Very nice! Vince Converse leads I'm Bad Like Jesse James on guitar and vocal, backed by Leo Lyons and Ric Lee from Ten Years After. Converse really rips some hot riffs under the track , the band basically keeping the skeletal framework as set up by Hooker. The spectacular, Jeff Beck leads Will The Circle Be Unbroken with singers, Siggi Josiah and Earl Green/Kingdom Choir. Beck's signature guitar work is unmistakable and outstanding. Gary Brooker (keys/vocals) and Andy Fairweather-Low (guitars) team up on Baby Lee with a Latin beat by Henry Spinetti. Very cool! T.S. McPhee (guitar and vocal) and Dick Heckstall-Smith (sax) do a super broke down Ground Hog Blues. Mick Taylor on lead vocal and slide teams up with Max Middleton (Jeff Beck Group) for a swinging version of This Is Hip. Always loved Taylor's slide playing! Super. The Peter Green Splinter Group does an authentic style Crawlin' King Snake. With Green on acoustic guitar, and harp, Nigel Watson on open tuned acoustic, Roger Cotton on rhythm guitar and pete Stroud on bass this is deep! Mr Clem Clemson (Humble Pie) teams up with Tony McPhee and Heckstall Smith for a great boogie, I'm Leaving making Hooker proud. Brooker on vocal and piano and Fairweather-Low are back on Little Wheel and each plays solo's that are nicely suited for modern interpretations of Hooker boogie. Gregg's Egg does a modern/pop funky version of The Business featuring Suzanne Sterling on lead guitar and Futoshi Morroka on lead guitar. Jeff Beck is back on Hobo Blues and again with his signature tone. Earl Green on lead vocal actually captures Hooker pretty well. Excellent! Jack Bruce and Gary Moore are back on Serves You Right To Suffer. Bruce with Gary Husband on drums keeps the bottom anchored and Moore sings up a soulful lead vocal accented by crisp guitar riffs. Booker T on organ and Randy California (Spirit)join up with the Hook hinself on lead guitar and vocal to Red House. Cool!

Disc 2 (Knights of The Blues Table) opens with Send For Me with Jack Bruce on lead vocal, bass and harp with Clemson on guitar and Heckstall Smith on sax. This is a rocker and a great opener. Georgie Fame lays down a cool jazz If You Live. Very nice! Duffy Power on acoustic guitar and coval, backed by Heckstall - Smith on sax and Alex Keen on bass lays down the most basic of modern acoustic blues. Very nice. Chris Jagger takes lead vocal and guitar on Racketeer's Blues, backed by Charlie Hart on bass, Ed Beane on guitar, Malcolm Mortimore on drums and Mick Jagger on harp. Interesting! Peter Brown steps up on lead vocal on Rocks In My Bed. Heckstall-Smith (of Coliseum) sets down some real nice sax lines on this and throughout the release. Miller Anderson, known for vocals on many bands including Savoy Brown, Keef Hartley and Chicken Shack does and excellent job on Don't Let Me be Misunderstood. Maggie Bell (Stone The Crows) teams up with Big Jim Sullivan for Blind Man. Sullivan shows his excellent guitar strength throughout this track and Bells vocals are solid as ever! On Robert Johnson's Travelling Riverside Blues Peter Green and Nigel Watson harmonize and play traditional acoustic guitar riffs. Very nice! Tony McPhee is on acoustic guitar and vocal on Drop Down Mama. This is a real nice modern interpretation of Sleepy John's original. I've always loved this track, I've Got News For You. This arrangement is slow and really bluesy featuring Clemson on vocal and guitar. Didn't know Clem could sing but he sure can. With Mark Feltham on harp and Ronnie Leahy on piano this track is really hot. Sonny Boy Williamson's Nine Below Zero features Dennis Greaves on vocal and guitar and Billy on harp. Nice blues rocker. The Pretty Things lay down Judgement Day with Phil May on Vocal, Dick Taylor on guitar, John Povey on harp, Skip Alan on drums and Wally Allen on Bass. Very Yardbirds like! Paul Jones and Otis Grand do Play On Little Girl/TBone Shuffle. Jones on lead vocal and harp, Grand on guitar, Mike Hobart on sax, Steve Wren on piano, Chico Lopez on bass and Junior Delmas on drums make this a super modern blues rocker! Mick Clarke (vocal and guitar) and Lou Martin (piano) do a very simple but effective cover of James Cotton's One More Mile To Go, one of my favorite tracks on the release... clean and tight! Mick Taylor and Max Middleton team up on Willie Dixon's You Shook Me. Both Middleton and Taylor shine on this number with sweet extended solos. Tom Killner delivers Midnight Call, a solid rocker featuring his own lead vocal and guitar backed by Nigel Killner and Jake Ashton. Wrapping the release is Eli Cook's Sweet Thang featuring Tinsley Ellis. A lumbering bluesy number, this is a real nice track to conclude a super batch of blues and blues rock.

Silver Tongue Records artist: Mississippi Bigfoot - Population Unknown - New Release review

I just received the newest release, Population Unknown, from Mississippi Bigfoot and it's quite good. Opening with southern blues rocker, Burn That Woman Down, a heavily blues tasting rocker with a heavy swagger, Christina Vierra on lead vocal is joined by Johnny Holiday and Ashley Bishop on slide and electric guitars with a funky swagger. Doug McMinn on drums and Cade Moore round out the group for a super rock start. Mighty River has a much more contemporary sound but retaining the tasty vocal sting of Vierra and cocky guitar riffs from Holiday (think Warren Haynes). Very nice! Open road rocker, Wag The Dog, is a fast driver with cool harp highlights by McMinn. No Flesh In Outerspace gets mighty funky and I like it! With a strong tasty guitar solo on this one and without going over the top, Holiday really gets the job done. Who's Gonna Run This Town has strong Jimi (Hey Joe) feel and solid metal bass lines giving it a real heavy rock sound but the bluesy vocals of Vierra never let you forget where you are. A real throw back to the days of "real" rock, this band has it going! Clarksdale has a Robert Johnson Crossroads feel but with modern blues rock execution. Holiday shares lead vocal on this track with Vierra and does a really solid job. McMinn on harp shows he's not just a drummer who can play a little bit of harp and Holiday lays in some real nice guitar riffs. Very cool! Ballad, You Did, features Vierra in her most natural vocal form. A solid melody and clean piano styling set the stage for this radio track. Booker T track, The Hunter, is given full tilt with McMinn on harp chiding Vierra on. Holiday and Bishop trade lead guitar lines making for an interesting duel. Wrapping the release is Tree Knockin', is a swampy rock boogie with a ZZ Top feel. Without getting outside the JL Hooker core, Bigfoot jams a cool closer for a surprisingly super release!

VizzTone Label Group artist: Jonn Del Toro Richardson - Tengo Blues - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Tengo Blues, from Jonn Del Toro Richardson and it's great! Opening with Behind The Curtain, a high stepping R&B style track with the Texas Horns blazing you know that you're in for something special. Richardson sings behind the beat which I really like and his sense for blues phrasing is very strong. Like Willie Dixon's Wang Dang Doodle, I'm Her Man has a super groove reinforced by the tight bass lines of Nathan Rowe and drums by Wes Starr. I really like Richardson's guitar expressions with trem bends and frequent short guitar riffs as accents. Excellent! Texas shuffle, Love If You Want It has a real grinding lope, and shows a nice interplay between Nick Connoly on piano and Richardson on guitar. Triple Lindig is an excellent instrumental shuffle with an easy jazz overtone but with great blues lines. Richardson leads the way with solid riffs, followed by Connoly on organ and Kaz on sax. Excellent! The Moment is a terrific Lantin salsa inspired piece with Al Gomez hitting the trumpet hard giving it a lot of authenticity. This track has spicy percussion and a lot of life. Excellent! Can't Run From Love has a radio sense with the instrumentation peeled back featuring Richardson on lead vocal. Punched up by the Horns, and with lively drums by Starr, and featuring a cool bluesy guitar solo by Richardson this track has pure radio power. Get Me Back To Texas has a real country 2 step rhythm and simple solid foundation. Richardson is joined on this track by super guitar man Anson Funderburgh who adds his clean style and articulation. Soul ballad, This I Know, features really nice vocal work from Richardson and along with nicely enveloping organ work, melodic blues soloing by Richardson making this one of the top candidates for blues guitar lovers on the release. Excellent! Tall Pretty Baby is an super shuffle that is bound to make you jump in your seat and joined again by Funderburgh and backed by The Horns makes this one of my favorites on the release. Here She Comes, another richly R&B style track on blues. Feeling a lot like Mary Had A Little Lamb or Mustang Sally, Richardson picks his spots carefully for poker hot accuracy. Wild Ride is a country fused blues track with a driving bass line and hot piano by Connoly. With non stop guitar riffs and driving rhythm...it is a Wild Ride! Funky blues, Tell Me Do You Love Me, is a great track with hot horn underpinnings. Gomez's trumpet work and Starr's drum work are particularly evident in the overall feel developed under the stylized guitar riffs by Richardson. Very nice! Wrapping the release is title track, Tengo Blues, a really hot Latin style track with Spanish influenced guitar riffs, jazz riffs and and really tight percussion cushioned on a bed of organ. This is an excellent closer for an excellent release. I do suggest that you check it out...now!!
