I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

JP Cadillac Records artists: The Knickerbocker All-Stars - Open Mic At The Knick - New Release review
I just received the newest release, Open Mic At The Knick, by the Knickerbocker All-Stars and it's excellent! Opening with the swinging You Upset Me Baby, Ricky King Russell lays down some really hot guitar riffs and Sugar Ray Norcia leads the way on vocals. Al Copley smokes the keys backed strongly by horn section, Doc Chanonhouse (trumpet), Bobby "Breeze" Holfelden (trombone), Rich Lataille (sax) and Dennis Cook (bari sax). Smokin! Up next is Turn On Your Love Light and Malford Milligan commands the stage on vocal. Vocalist Willy Laws has you in the palm of his hands from the first note of Mother-In Law Blues. Russell steps up with some really tasty guitar riffs on this track and the horn section keeps a real traditional early modern blues feel. Very nice. Milligan is back on the mic for Love Disease and an excellent sax solo from Lataille and Muscle Shoals like guitar work from Nick Adams make this song a standout. Johnny Nicholas takes the lead on the classic Jelly Jelly. Al Copley lays down classic blues riffs on this track and it's slow, easy pace makes for a cool opportunity for Russell to really step out with some nicely articulated guitar riffs. Very nice! On Reconsider Baby the band gives the track a real warm feel with a smooth horn backing and super guitar highlights. Again I find myself really groovin to Russells tasty guitar riffs. On jump track, It's Later Than You Think, Copley really has the keys rolling and the horn section is really pushing as Norcia does a great job on lead vocal. Ain't That Lovin' You features Curtis Salgado on lead vocal and his vocals are top notch. Channonhouse , Holfelden, Lataille and Cook really blow the doors on this one. Willy Laws takes the lead on Five Long Years really gripping the feel of the track. Copley inserts some solid piano riffs but it's Russell who takes center stage instrumentally with a blistering guitar solo on this one. Excellent! J.P. Sheerar with a much heavier voice, takes the mic on Somebody's Got To Go and again Russell shows what a perfect choice he was as the guitarist for this set. The man just sits in the pocket and cherry picks his solos. Lataille plays a really rich sax solo on the track as well over the masterful key work of Copley. Brilliant. Brian Templeton is on lead vocal for Tore Down. It's nice that the vocalist from track to track are different giving a cool blend of textures with the same band. Templeton has a great voice for the swing and Russell again is right there adding just the right touch of hot guitar over the horn section. Along About Midnight features Nicholas on vocal and has a cool laid back pace. The band wraps itself around the core feel and Russell steps up with just the right amount of throttle. Very nice. Rocker, Going Down really kicks it up a notch with Russell and the horn section at full throttle. Bob Worthington on bass drives it along and featuring Dave Maxwell on keys and tight drumming from Bobby and Fran Christina on drums, is a super conclusion to a hot set!

Blind Pig Records artist: Deanna Bogart - Just A Wish Away - New Release Review
I just received the newest release, Just A Wish Away from Deanna Bogart and it's quite good. I'll start off by saying this is not a traditional blues release by any means. What it is more is a pure artist finding her own voice and expressing it in many different ways. Opening with If It's Going To Be Like This, Bogart is on piano and vocals joined by Derwin "Big D" Perkins and Cris Jacobs on finger pickin guitar, Charlie Wooton on bass, Terrance Houston on drums and especially featuring Marty Rifkin on pedal steel on this country flavored track. On funky R&B style track, Fine By Me Good Bayou, Bogart shows her vocal style and of course her sax work joined by Mark Mullins, Craig Klein and Greg Hicks. If You Have Crying Eyes, a vocal duet with Cris Jacobs has a gospel ballad arrangement with country hints for a real nice sound. Back and Forth Kid, a vocal and piano track has the maturity of Carol King and presents Bogart in a very straight forward light. Collarbone is a horn infused jazz style instrumental with a cool Latin rhythm. There are some really nice efforts efforts on this track and especially nice George Benson like guitar wizardry accompanied by Houston on drums. Bramhall/Vaughn penned Tightrope gets a New Orleans funk feel with a lot of keys and drums (George Horn) and rhythm guitar. Bogart takes some of her nicest piano solo's on this track laying it wide open. On ballad What Is Love Supposed To Do, Bogart again cranks out a serious ballad with a twist of country, highlighted by her solid vocals and balanced by Rifkin on pedal steel. Maybe I Won't is a light jazzy track with solid vocals and warm sax work. Rafael Pereira adds some crisp percussion work giving this track a cool feel. Conversing With Lincoln is a fast paced calypso style track with nice sax work and nicely blended vocals. Wooten's smokin' bass work drives the track with support by Houston drums. Big D pops in for some hot guitar riffs giving this track a sophisticated spin. On Sly Stone's Hot Fun In The Summertime, Bogart gives the classic hit a lighter spin with Alvin Ford Jr. on drums. The horn work on this track is full and Scott Ambush playing bass is complimented by Joshua Fairman on synth bass. Bogart takes a full throated sax solo on melody on this one and Wooten does some real hot under the track bass riffs on bass. Surprisingly, the final track, classic Bye Bye Blackbird, done in New Orleans style is my favorite on the release. Opening with full sax melody and leaving space for light, crisp guitar work from Jacobs, Bogart really plays it up on this one. Alvin Ford Jr. is back on drums and his work helps to accentuate the march style. A very cool conclusion to a different style of release.

Audio Fidelity To Release 5.1 Multichannel Hybrid SACD of Mike Bloomfield - Al Kooper - Steve Stills 'Super Session' Mixed By Legendary Al Kooper!
Audio Fidelity To Release 5.1 Multichannel
Hybrid SACD of Mike Bloomfield - Al Kooper - Steve Stills 'Super Session'
Album Mixed By Legendary Al Kooper!
"...one of those albums that seems to get
better with age...a super session indeed!"
Camarillo, CA – Marshall Blonstein's Audio
Fidelity will be releasing a limited numbered edition 5.1 Multichannel Hybrid
SACD of the legendary Mike Bloomfield - Al Kooper - Steve Stills 'Super Session'
album! Al Kooper was an A&R executive with Columbia Records in the early
1960's after leaving the group Blood, Sweat & Tears. The Super Session album
was conceived as a jam session with Kooper on keyboards and former Paul
Butterfield Blues Band member Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar along with veteran
studio musician and Wrecking Crew member "Fast" Eddie Hoh on drums and Barry
Goldberg, also on keyboards. Bloomfield was available during the first day of
recording for Side 1 of the LP (tracks 1-5). For the second day of recording,
Kooper brought in former Buffalo Springfield guitarist Steven Stills to perform
on the music that became Side 2 of the LP (tracks 6-9). Recorded on a shoestring
budget over a 2-day period in Los Angeles, Super Session went on to become a
rock classic and earned the trio a gold record for sales of over one million
copies.
"I always wanted to mix this in 5.1. I finished it
in 2006, and it's been sitting there until Audio Fidelity released it from
captivity. It's the first album I ever mixed in 5.1 I hope everyone enjoys it.
Surround Sound allows the listener to get up close to each musician and hear
details you can't hear in stereo. Hope ya like details - I DO!" - Al
Kooper
The package includes new liner notes
written by Al Kooper that tells the story of the Super Session album and the new
5.1 Multichannel mix. The 5.1 mix by Al Kooper with mastering by Bob Ludwig was
never released and yet it has acquired some fame from industry insiders familiar
with the Multichannel mix with comments like "excellent" and "it deserves to be
heard." The new mastering of the Stereo
layer of tracks for new SACD Stereo and CD Stereo audio are by mastering
engineer Steve Hoffman.
