Guitarist John McKinley releases debut recording Window On The World

Guitarist John McKinley releases debut recording
Window On The World

View Window On The World EPK here

Hailing from Roswell, New Mexico, guitarist John McKinley cut his teeth as a young man playing in a variety of rock, blues and horn bands, honing his skills as a guitarist and songwriter while relentlessly touring across the Southern U.S. With his debut recording, Window on the World, McKinley channels the sounds of his Texas influences:  Freddie King, Johnny Winter and ZZ Top. Add a dash of the cerebral voodoo of Frank Zappa and the deep soul of McKinley’s Mexican roots and you have a musical palette that serves up guitar-driven blues-rock paired with classic sing-a-long melodies.“I think this album has a lot of musical qualities, but it’s most definitely a guitar album. It’s more rock than blues - a cross-section of all the music I love to play,” says the Kitchener, Ontario based musician.

Window on the World is McKinley’s first outing as a songwriter and recording artist. All songs on the 12-track debut are credited to McKinley or as co-writes with son Darius McKinley, 35, a talented musician in his own right. “The song writing process was enlightening. After decades of playing, it was great to put everything down on a final project”, says McKinley. "I’ve always been writing songs - I just didn’t play them in public. The places I was playing were paying me to play other people’s songs. It was my son Darius who was the real push behind this album.”
The album’s wide-reaching influences make for a number of highlights - from the Texas-style blues-rock of album opener Dirty Nails to the gritty Zappa-esque workout of Stratitude onto the leg-shaking mojo of Rev It Up and the Spanish hip-swaying Cuando Yo Me Voy. It’s a combination of rock and groove with riffs that can’t miss.

McKinley, having called Kitchener home since the early ’80s, is a much-loved mainstay in his adopted hometown. He landed in the city after an offer for a gig with a band including Pino Palladino - a talented bassist that was sought out by rock-A-listers such as David Gilmour, Pete Townshend and Peter Gabriel. With a baby on the way (son Darius), McKinley’s roots were settled in Southwestern Ontario where he continues today to perform and teach young up-and-comers. “John has been a huge part of the K-W (Kitchener-Waterloo) music scene for such a long time it’s hard to believe this is his first album,” enthuses Kitchener powerhouse blues vocalist Cheryl Lescom. “He has mentored many young musicians in the area. He gives his time and energy to anyone who asks for help in making their music better. He is a great soul and a brilliant guitar player and singer. He makes it all look so easy because he’s a natural.”

In 2013, McKinley was awarded the Kitchener Blues Festival’s Mel Brown Award - named for the legendary Mississippi blues guitarist who came to call Kitchener home in the ’80s. Brown is widely considered the musical spirit for the annual festival, which began in 2001.

For Window on the World, McKinley has put together a band of accomplished local players. With McKinley handling vocal and lead guitar, the group is nicely rounded out with son Darius on electric bass, Ben Rollo on drums and Darryl Romphf on second guitar.  The band members are much sought after talents, often performing on stage or in studio for a myriad of other local and touring acts.

McKinley says he’s inspired by his 81-year-old aunt, a long-time dance teacher who he says still dances every day.  “She always told me, do your art - no matter what.” For McKinley, the future is wide open.

LMP/VizzTone Label Group artist:Lara Price - I Mean Business - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, I Mean Business from Lara Price and it's got spunk. Opening with R&B track, Get It When I Want It, Price leads the way on vocal backed by Derrick Martin on drums, Steve Evans on bass, Kid Andersen on guitar, Micheal Peloquin on sax, Micheal Rinta on trombone, Mike Rose on trumpet, Sue McCracklin and Maureen Smith on backing vocals. With it's Motown overtones, this track is cool! With a bit more of a Memphis sound, Cryin' Over You has a smooth, soul sound. With warm horn backing, Smith and McCracklin on backing vocal and with Mighty Mike Schermer on lead guitar, this track has strong commercial potential. With a Latin rhythm, traces of Procol Harem and a thick thread to Bond themes, Undone dances along nicely. Schermer rips a clean guitar solo punched up by the horn section and the driving bass work of Evans. Moon In The Mirror has super balance and may be my favorite track on the release. Price's vocals are creamy smooth with an almost Smokey Robinson feel. Excellent! Crazy Lucy is a sassy 2 stepper with tight instrumental backing and warm backing vocals. With a catchy melody, another solid radio track. Happy Blue Year slows things way down setting up a track with real sway. Price's lead vocals on this track are clear and seem to float on the bed of keys and backing vocals. Schermer's funky guitar work on this track has real sting and authority. Very smooth! High steppin', Slipped Tripped Fell In Love, struts in with attitude and punch. Funky, Pack It Up is a heavy footed, stomper with cocky horn work. On top of Price's solid vocals, lead guitar work on this track by Laura Chavez is mighty fine with some explosive riffs. Very nice! Smooth and slinky, Time, has the musical sensitivity of I'd Rather Go Blind, but with a more contemporary rhythm and drum riffs. I really like Chavez's guitar soloing on this track and really it rips. On title track, I Mean Business, the band gets a revival kind of tent raising feel with clean guitar riffs. Very cool! One Tear At A Time has a solid strut reinforced by stinging guitar riffs by Mr.Chris Cain and tight horn work. Super! Wrapping the release is Love Lost, a soulful ballad with a nice melody and nicely placed guitar riffs by Kid Andersen. A nice conclusion to a solid release.

Cleopatra Records artist: Kenny Neal - I'll Be Home For Christmas - New release review

I just received the newest release, I'll Be Home For Christmas from Kenny Neal and it has a bit of blues mixed into it's traditional and modern Christmas. Opening with upbeat 12 bar number, Christmas Comes But Once A Year, Neal takes the lead on vocal and harp with Vestie Jackson on guitar, Darnell Neal on piano, Frederick Neal on keys and Bryan Morris on drums. With a slower pace classic Christmas ballad, Silver Bells gets a R&B, Ray Charles flavor. Neal does a real nice job on lead vocals and guitar backed by Darnell, Fredrick and Bryan. Next up is a rolling version of Winter Wonderland featuring Syreeta Neal on lead vocal, Kenny on harp and guitar, and Kenny Neal Jr on bass and drums. Very nice! Syreeta does a real nice job on Merry Little Christmas backed by Joel Joseph on piano. On Please Come Home For Christmas, Kenny is back up front on lead vocal and guitar, backed by Fredrick on piano, Bryan on drums and Vestie and Darnell on guitars. Kenny's guitar solo on this track is particularly clean and soulful. Very nice! I'll Be Home For Christmas gets a real homey makeover as I would picture Al Green doing. Neal, on lead vocal, guitar and harp, really hits to groove on this one, backed by Fredrick on piano, Darnell on bass and Bryan on drums. Definitely one of my personal favorites. Merry Christmas Baby#2 is a funky shuffle with a hot bass line thanks to Darnell. Fredrick rattles the piano with hot rhythm and Kenny covers lead vocals and plays some really fine guitar riffs making this one of the bluesiest tracks on the release (think funky BB King). Lazy blues track, Lonesome Christmas, has a cool bass line and Taj Mahal kind of delivery by Neal. Fredrick's piano work is tight and Bryan's drumming precise. Merry Christmas Baby #1 has a really nice T-Bone Walker kind of feel with expressive blues guitar riffs from Kenny. One of my favorite tracks on the release, you get so caught up in the bluesy feel, you forget you're listening to a Christmas track. On the traditional, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Syreeta is back on lead vocal, backed by Joel Joseph on keys. This is a very nice arrangement and should replace some of the moldy versions that are played year after year. Wrapping the release is a rocking blues version of Silent Night. Syreeta is back at the mic on lead vocal and Kenny lays in some relaxing guitar riffs cushioned by Joseph on keys. A real nice conclusion to a solid contemporary seasonal release!

Old Boy Network artist: JJ Appleton & Jason Ricci - Dirty Memory - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Dirty Memory, from JJ Appleton & Jason Ricci and I really like it! Opening with Leaning Blues, JJ Appleton really nails the Elmore James feel on slide resonator and Jason Ricci is wailing on harp for a terrific acoustic blues feel. Blind Willie Johnson's Nobody's Fault But Mine is up next with an uptempo foot stompin' pace. With a more contemporary feel, Appleton delivers Can't Believe It's This Good. A cordial blend of vocal, tight harp riffs and mellow slide resonator, this track should have strong radio appeal. Nicely constructed pop track, New Man, is a really nice showcase for Ricci on vocal and harp. Jason Solo is an understatement but accurate. Rici takes his harp for a nice ride from train harp to the world of Lee Oskar. Very nice! Just Enough is a rambling blues track with a nice melody and harp and slide guitar in unison. Nicely blended, this is a cool track. The Rolling Stones', Black Limousine, has a great swagger with excellent vocal. Appleton's resonator work is warm and inviting and Ricci's harp work clear and tight. Demon Lover has a real swampy feel with almost drone notes and low key chant like singing and swirling harp work. Very interesting! Gary US Bonds track, It Ain't No Use, has a definite blues feel with a twist of soul. Ricci really does a nice job of bringing the track to new light with crisp harp riffs making this another track that could easily see cross radio airplay. Wrapping the release is Come On Over, Come On By. This is a wonderfully expressive track with soulful vocals and excellent slide resonator accompaniment. Terrific!

Henrietta Records artist: Charlie Musselwhite - I Ain't Lyin' ... - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, I Ain't Lyin'..., from Charlie Musselwhite and its Chicago style blues pure and simple. Opening with Latin flavored, Good Blues Tonight, Musselwhite is joined by Matt Stubbs on guitar, June Core on drums and Steve Froberg on bass. With classic Musselwhite harp styling and a snazzy guitar solo by Stubbs this is a cool opener. Elmore James' Done Somebody Wrong, is up next and has classic 70's arrangement not unlike Beck and Page or the Allmans but with Musselwhite's signature vocals and harp riffs. Stubbs has a clean guitar dialog which, with cool vibrato has a punch of it's own. Long Lean Lanky Mama is one of my favorite tracks on the release with it's freewheeling harp and deliberate guitar attack. Very nice! Slow blues, Always Been Your Friend, really gives Stubbs a solid floor to solo on guitar and Musselwhite delivers nicely on harp and vocals. Morganfield style, If I Should Have Bad Luck, is a great toe tapper with a classic 12 bar bottom. Musselwhite's trademark tone and phrasing is perfect on this number and Stubbs hits it running in pure Chicago style. My Kinda Gal is a high power track with hot riffs. Both Musselwhite and Stubbs unload on this track, Stubbs at time with almost Western style riffs. very cool! Cool shuffle track, Blues, Why Do You Worry Me, hits a fine groove , set by Froberg and Musselwhite hits it square on. Walking guitar riffs by Stubbs are placed in perfect style making this another of my favorites on the release. Continuing in cool Chicago style, 300 Miles To Go, has a great energy and Musselwhite's phrasing is pure and tight. Stubbs adds another of his slick solos adding even more texture to an already strong track. Long Leg Woman digs in the funk with bass, guitar & drum rhythm section giving Musselwhite a solid vehicle to solo over. A cool departure and solid track, this track has a nice feel. Duke Pearson penned instrumental ballad, Cristo Redentor, is a super track with Musselwhite playing the melody on harp. This is a very nice track and gives Musselwhite the opportunity to play outside of the box. Excellent! Wrapping the release is an unedited version of Good Blues Tonight. With it's Latin flavor, clean riffs and great tone, it's a great closer as it was opener.

Josh Smith - Over Your Head - New Release review

I just received the newest release, Over Your Head, by Josh Smith and I really like it! Opening with aggressive blues rocker, How Long, Smith takes no time at all establishing his presence. A heavy bass line by Calvin Turner, drums by Lemar Carter and solid vocals and lead guitar by Josh Smith, this track hits hard. With rock solid footing, Smith sets the track on fire with creative guitar riffs. His work is also complimented by Joe Bonamassa on guitar. Excellent! Title track, Over Your Head, is a well written rocker with grinding guitar riffs and gravelly vocals. I really like Smith's poise and guitar attack which shows both composure and explosiveness. Very cool! Strongly blues oriented, When I Get Mine, has a modified shuffle feel with cool blues guitar phrasing over a melodic bass line. Very smooth! Walking jazz bass line by Turner sets the pace for Still Searching with Jeff Babko on keys. This is a really nice improvisational piece that has a great groove. First Hand Look is a super rocker with an uneven rhythm. This is a terrific track non concentric drumming and a contagious rhythm. Want a mix of Led Zep, Tommy Bolin and Billy Cobham... this is it! Excellent!! Next up is ... and What, a swinging blues instrumental. With it's wah wah cranked open, Smith and Kirk Fletcher just lay down the nicest guitar grooves over a tight rhythm pattern by Turner and Carter. Excellent! Up next is Smoke And Mirrors with a super dynamic intro breaking into a funky rock groove. With a light twist of Stone Free, this track moves along gathering tension which is released in a power bomb over and again by this 3 piece dynamo! Pusher is a funky rocker, Smith responding to his own poised vocals with crisp guitar riffs. Carter's kick drum and slap snare/rim shot combo sets the pace and Turner's bass groove is infectious. Super! Better Off is a quiet ballad featuring Charles Jones on vocals and Jeff Babko on keys. This is a special track with an almost Philly sound. Sensuous guitar soloing by Smith nicely compliments this beautiful track. You'll Find Love has a Muddy Waters/Willie Dixon kind of feel reinforced by Charlie Musselwhite on harp. A cool and easy blues vamp with modern dressing, this track opens up as it progresses with swinging blues guitar riffs and harp work. Wrapping the release is a reprise of How Long, with a tight drum rhythm, bass line and distorted guitar soloing. This is an excellent closer to an excellent release!

Rootsy artist: Bert Deivert & Copperhead Run - Blood In My Eyes For You - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Blood In My Eyes For You, from Bert Deivert & Copperhead Run and it's quite good! Opening with Big Joe William's Baby Please Don't Go, Deivert do an uptempo version, leading on vocal and mandolin and backed by Fredrick Lindholm on drums and percussion, Janne Zander on guitars and Per-Arne Pettersson on bass. Son House's Death Letter has a smooth sink to it with cool slide riffs under the melody. With mandolin highlights accenting, this is one of the best redo's of this track I have heard. Sleepy John Estes' Mailman Blues is up next and taken in strong 12 bar format. Lead by a strongly reinforced rhythm pattern by Zander and Pettersson, Deivert's vocals and mando playing are super and a strong slide effort by Zander is tops. Original, Black Nanny, has a much more contemporary sound with bass intro by Pettersson. Zander's slide work and Deivert's mando work are nice compliments to Deivert's vocals. Very cool! Sleepy John's Special Agent has a lot of pep and Deivert's mando work is reminiscent of early work by Ry Cooder. As I sit and listen to the release, I have to admit I haven't heard something this cool in a lot of years. Excellent! Another Sleepy John track, Drop Down Mama, has an almost rock beat but still purely acoustic style blues. Deivert has an excellent voice and his mando accompaniment along with beautiful slide work from Zander and backing by Pettersson and Lindholm is tight. Another original track, Cuckoo Crowed, is well written and Zander's slide work really nicely compliments Deivert's vocals. Very cool! Sleepy John's Milkcow Blues has a perky Piedmont kind of flavor and Deivert's vocals are quite direct. The focused picking by Deivert, reinforced especially by Pettersson is really nice. Zanger lays out a slick slide solo leading back to a very cool conclusion. Wine Jones' Rob and Steal, again with a bit more contemporary blues feel, had solid vocal work and tandem slide work giving a very warm feel. Deivert and Zander share the solo spot on their respective instruments coaxed along by Pettersson on bass. Yank Rachell's My Baby's Gone, has a real bluesy vamp by Pettersson and recurring lead phrase by Deivert on mando providing a solid platform for Deivert vocals on this track. Zander's warm slide work and rich tones come through particularly loud and clear on this track. The Mississippi Sheiks, Blood In My Eyes for You, appears hear as the title track and with it's funky rhythm is a solid contender for my favorite track on the release with a great rhythm, super instrumentation and Deiverts vocal style. Wrapping the release is R.L. Burnside's Poor Black Mattie, maintaining it's cultural richness but with a slick uptempo blues rock rhythm. This is a highly unusual release and one that would stand tall with some of the best of Ry Cooder's work. I love it!
