Scott H. Biram: new album + song premiere via Rolling Stone Country

Scott H. Biram announces new album and premieres song via Rolling Stone Country

Scott H. Biram will release a new album, entitled The Bad Testament, on February 24. This will be his 10th album overall and 6th with Bloodshot Records, his first since 2014's Nothin' But Blood. The Bad Testament lands somewhere west of the Old Testament and south of the AA handbook, straddling the chasm between sin and redemption. It’s a record of hard-grinding lost love, blues and deep, dark Americana.

Rolling Stone Country announced the release this morning, along with a premiere of a new song "Long Old Time", saying, "Biram evokes the haunted bluesmen and country singers of the past on the greasy blues number, singing as a man out of options and trapped by his bad decisions."

The Ameripolitan Award-nominated, Austin-based Dirty Old One Man Band will be on the road relentlessly touring in support of The Bad Testament in 2017, of which a few dates are listed below. His tour date page will announce an extended mid-March through mid-April tour run into the western U.S. in the coming weeks.

Current dates:
1/26 - Lafayette, LA @ Blue Moon Saloon
1/27 - New Orleans, LA @ Siberia
1/28 - Beaumont, TX @ The Gig
2/16 - San Antonio, TX @ Sam’s Burger Joint
2/26 - The Outlaw Country Cruise

The Bad Testament track listing:

1. Set Me Free
2. Still Around
3. Red Wine
4. TrainWrecker
5. Long Old Time
6. Swift Driftin'
7. Righteous Ways
8. Crippled & Crazy
9. Feel So Wrong
10. True Religion

Bonus tracks: (Lost On The River) EP

Cleopatra Records artist: James Montgomery - The James Montgomery Blues Band - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The James Montgomery Blues Band, from James Montgomery and it's a cranking homage to Paul Butterfield. Opening with funky rocker, One More Heartache, Montgomery blows the doors open with his always powerful harp, backed by George McCann on guitar, David Hull on bass and Jeff Thompson on drums and punched up by the Uptown Horns including Crispin Cloe on sax, Larry Etkin on trumpet, Arno Hecht on sax and Bob Funk on trombone. Super opener. Nick Gravenites' Born In Chicago gets a bit more bounce that Nick's original and McCann sports a real nice guitar solo opening the way for Montgomery's harp solo. Very cool. Little Walter's Blues With A Feeling is solid and Montgomery's vocals are raw and gritty. I particularly like the tight guitar work by McCann on this track giving it a casual pace along with stinging riffs. Young Woman's Love just has that snap making it sit solid on your foot. McCann is featured on lead vocal and Montgomery really digs in with fat, well formed harp riffs making this one of my favorites on the release. Sure to be the release favorite, I Got A Mind To Give Up Living, features Jimmy Vivino on lead guitar and he really pours it on. Montgomery's harp work is relentless and his vocals soulful. Excellent! On Elmore James' Shake Your Moneymaker, McCann slips on the slide and the band is loosely tight like Hound Dog Taylor giving this track real life. Good Question is a jazz born R&B track that really sings. Grace Kelly sets up a real nice sax solo and Montgomery rides high on the rhythmic drum work of Thompson and a moving bass line by Hull. McCann cuts loose with a real nice solo of his own and the band circles back for a final refrain. Very cool. With it's walking bass line, One Plus One absolutely struts. Closing the release is Junior Parker's Mystery Train. Cooked in full JL Hooker, boogie style, Montgomery works the band into a real lather for this sensational closer.

The Soul Of John Black - Early In The Moanin' Out 2/3

The Soul Of John Black

Early In The Moanin’

Is Greasy, Slippery and Groovy

Album Out February 3, 2017

“Whole new brand of soul…” - Rolling Stone

“Doctor says I can't be helped - by nobody but thee - now lay some hands on me” - “Can’t Be Helped”

The Soul Of John Black is back – it’s part Chicago blues shaken and stirred with Delta mindfulness and a Memphis soul garnish.

The Soul of John Black has not been sold. It’s alive and well. He’s out and about – walking the streets with shades over his eyes.  This eclectic mix of blues, soul, jazz and funk with slices of hip-hop grows arms and legs as it spins on the record player. Early In The Moanin’ will be released on February 3, 2017, on Cadabra Records through CD Baby.

John Bigham; “JB” – as he’s known to friends – will be appearing at the 2017 Folk Alliance International Conference for two private showcases on February 17 and 18. This will be a one-of-a-kind acoustic setting showing off his guitar chops that are old school Delta style mixed in with reggae and soul.

After eight years in Fishbone and a stint with Miles Davis, The Soul Of John Black calls Early In The Moanin’; his “love letter to the blues. I’m taking it back to Mississippi to the Delta, in my own way.”

“Old school funk…spine-tingling.” – Interview

John himself produced and recorded Early In The Moanin’ at Tiger One Studio in Los Angeles bringing in some ace session players like Jake Najor (Big Daddy Kane), Mark Levy (Duradero Drums), Greg Camp (Smash Mouth) and Curtis Sanford (The Deele). The slice of Hip-Hop comes from the genius mind of Richard "Segal" Huredia, a well-known sound mixer, known for his work on Dr. Dre’s seminal album, The Chronic.

“I learned about music from my friends, my parents, and the radio,” JB says. “In Chicago a lot of soul-blues was popular and even doo-wop, but when I got turned on to Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, as a guitar player there was no turning back.”

With that broad stylistic education under his belt, Bigham moved to L.A. to pursue a career in music and began working as a touring sideman and session player. His first high-profile gig was playing guitar for R&B hit man El DeBarge. But JB’s personal history as an experimenter goes back to 1989 when he began an eight-year tenure playing guitar and keyboards in pioneering ska-funk-punk band Fishbone.

JB’s career has been filled with critical praise from Rolling Stone to NPR, nominations from The Blues Music Awards and The Independent Music Awards as well as studio session work with Dr. Dre, Eminem and Nikka Coats amongst others.

“Oddly enough, I didn’t get into really deep old school blues until I was working with Miles [Davis] and he recorded songs with John Lee Hooker for the soundtrack to a movie called The Hot Spot. That music affected me profoundly. John Lee Hooker became one of my main guys. I also figured that if his music and Miles Davis’ could blend so beautifully, I should be able to find my own way of combining everything that I love. And that’s what The Soul of John Black is about.”

Using words like wobble, talking about raking leaves and honoring Bobby “Blue” Bland in “Cher” (with a nod to the smooth crooner’s classic “St. James Infirmary”), The Soul Of John Black creates a sexy mood with his voice and rhythms.

“I say, Cher  - I love your pretty hair - well I know this might seem strange, but I can't get you off my brain, and I'm well aware it's the type of thing that get you put in St. James” –  “Cher”

You can almost see a smooth grin; slide on his face.

So sit, pour a glass of your favorite potion and get seduced by The Soul of John Black. You will slip into another world.

more media praise forbluesman Mike Zito's new album

 Howlin' Wuelf Media

Released on Ruf Records distributed by the In Tune Music Group last month, Make Blues Not War, gets knocked out of the #1 slot on XM Sirius' Rack of Blues by... The Rolling Stones (well, hell!) and but UP to #2 on UK's Roots Music Report. The album hangs on in the Top 10 of Billboard's Blues sales chart trailing The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and the like (not bad company to keep!)

This is blues guitar gunslinger Mike Zito's second release since leaving the mighty Royal Southern Brotherhood (Cyril Neville, Devon Allman, Yonrico Scott, Charlie Wooton). It has been getting great press coverage and I'm including a small sampling below. It's his 13th album overall and perhaps the most energetic of the bunch. I'm hoping you'll consider covering via feature or album review. Please let me know if you need a DL, CD or stream.
-------------------
Produced by Tom Hambridge, Make Blues Not War showcases Mike Zito at his most passionate. It's a string of loose, in-the-moment, energetic performances of some of the most pleasurable blues you've heard in a long time.
Pay special attention to the title track. It begins with a brooding, pouting stance, then develops into a smolder and by the end it has become a vocal fire. On the rest of the album, Zito comes across like a guy who just got the keys to a new car called music; he tests and pushes it to the limit and has a blast. You will too.
Greg Victor/ParkBench.live 11/28

Mike Zito worked ten years at a downtown St. Louis guitar shop where an older employee taught him an appreciation for The Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton and B.B. King. He released "Blue Room" his first independently produced album in 1997. Follow up albums included 1999's "America's Most Wanted"; 2004's "Slow It Down"; and 2006's "Superman".
Zito acknowledges that there were "bumps in the road"; that he previously had bouts with alcoholism. Many of his songs are about redemption and Zito credits much of his recovery to meeting his wife.
Zito came to the attention of Delta Groove's Randy Chortkoff who was just starting the Eclecto Groove label. Zito's first internationally distributed album "Today", co-produced by David Z. and Tony Braunagel, was released in 2008. The follow-up recording "Pearl River" included the title track co-written with Cyril Neville. That song won "Song of The Year" at the 2010 Blues Music Awards. Zito's 2011 "Greyhound" also received a BMA nomination.
Zito, Neville, and Devon Allman co-founded "The Royal Southern Brotherhood" in 2012; and together they released two studio albums and one live recording resulting in another Blues Music Award. In 2013 Zito formed a new band "The Wheel" and released "Gone to Texas" on the Ruf Records imprint. By 2014 Zito announced he was leaving RSB in order to tour with his own band.
This is Zito's thirteenth album overall and second studio recording since leaving RSB. His last album was 2015's "Keep Coming Back". The band on this new recording includes Zito, guitar and vocals; producer Tom Hambridge, drums; Tommy MacDonald, bass; and Rob McNelley whose credits include both Delbert McClinton and Bob Seger, guitar.
The opening track "Highway Mama" features the screeching guitars of Zito; McNelley and special guest Walter Trout. Zito's vocal is equally commanding. Keyboardist Kevin McKendree is featured on both piano and B-3. It is the first of five songs written by producer Hambridge and his regular writing partner Richard Fleming. Other songs written by them include "Redbird" with some fantastic drumming from Hambridge; "On The Road"; "Girl Back Home" with great guitar from Zito; and "Chip Off The Block" featuring Zito's son Zach on guitar "the apple don't fall far from the tree".
Zito has written the delta styled title track "Make Blues Not War" with Hambridge. It features Jason Ricci, winner of the 2010 BMA for "Best Instrumentalist - Harmonica". Ricci appears again on the Rolling Stones sounding "One More Train" co-written by Zito with both Hambridge and Fleming. The trio has also written "Wasted Time"; the humorous "Crazy Legs" and the autobiographical "Road Dog".
There are also two great covers. "Bad News is Coming" was written and recorded by Luther Allison and is the title track off of Allison's 1973 Motown Records album.
"Route 90" was written by Clarence J. Garlow, a.k.a. "Bon Ton" Garlow whom also authored the classic "Bon Ton Roulet". "Route 90" was previously recorded by both Johnny Winter on his 1985 "Serious Business" recording and by Gary Primich on his 1995 album "Mr. Freeze".
Zito's guitar work is always great and his vocals are the best they've been. Zito states "when you turn off the news and turn on the blues the world is a beautiful place". This fine blues rock album is sure to win Zito some additional accolades.
Richard Ludmerer/MakingAScene.org 12/13

Royal Southern Brotherhood alumnus Mike Zito has a new record called Make Blues Not War. Despite that cutesy political title, Make Blues Not War is far from some kind of serious political statement.  Audiences can rest easy that this is the fun southern tinged blues rock that they have come to expect from Mr. Zito.
This latest set from Zito  produced by Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Joe Louis Walker, George Thorogood etc...) kicks off with the rocking "Highway Mama" and also features blues legend Walter Trout on guitar keeping pace with Zito's screaming vocals. The next couple of tracks keep the rocking blues thumping in much the same vein. The title track is a more traditional blues with Mike on slide guitar. The slow blues "Bad News is Coming" features organ and piano, and "One More Train" has some interesting boogie piano work. "Chip Off the Old Block" tells the story of  Mike's son who grew up listening to the blues and features him playing guitar with his father. The album closes with boogie piano infused "Route 90," with Zito riffing away like a modern day Chuck Berry.
Make Blues Not War seems like a natural progress from Zito's work with the Royal Southern Brotherhood as well as his other solo material. If you are a Mike Zito fan then this is definitely a record that you will want in your collection.
Lou Lombardi/BlueRockReview.com 12/8

In some ways, Mike Zito's show next week at The Rude Dog Pub will be a homecoming. Although Zito grew up around St. Louis, he used to be a Cape Girardean himself.
But that was a long time ago -- more than a decade -- and the chart-topping bluesman said he was a different person then.
"I was a really bad drug addict," he said. "I mean, it was really bad; I was kind of wreaking havoc."
He left Cape Girardeau in the early 2000s, only to find himself, as they say, at rock bottom.
He described that period of his life on his blog, Bluesman in Recovery.
"Ten years ago, I did not own a guitar. I had pawned them all for drug money," he wrote in 2013. "I did not have a home, could not see my kids ... I was hopeless."
Getting clean, he figured, would mean more than giving up using. It would mean giving up music, too.
"I was so bad off, I thought, 'Well, that's fine. I need to save my life,'" he said.
Somewhere, he said, when he fell for the blues, he also bought into a dangerously misguided mythos -- that for a person to really play the blues, he had to feel the blues. And to really feel the blues, he had to be miserable, using, destitute or all three.
"You know, Stevie Ray Vaughan said the same thing ... but it's so ridiculous. That's such a crazy notion," he said. "But I was 20 years old, and all my heroes died of overdoses."
But that's not the way it works, he found.
"I learned if you're spiritually fit, you can go anywhere," he said. Now, instead of temptation, he said, rocking a bar show helps him stay sober.
"God is good, and life is weird," he blogged.
And if he's returning to Cape Girardeau with a better grasp on life, his accomplishments career-wise have been equally profound.
In November, his newest album, "Make Blues Not War," took the top slot of the Billboard blues chart over records by Joe Bonamassa, Melissa Etheridge and Eric Clapton himself.
"Today, as corny as it sounds, with the new album I'm celebrating," he said. "Now is just the right time. I'm back on my own with a blues album out, so when I saw we were going to be going through the Midwest, I said, 'I gotta go back to Cape and play.'"
Especially, he said, at The Rude Dog Pub.
"I've played at The Rude Dog so many times," he said. "It's such a great, fun bar. We've been all over, and there's not a lot of times we get to set up on the floor right by the door like that."
And while he has fans around the country, Zito said Cape Girardeau stands out.
"Everyone's so awesome to me there," he said. "It's really fun to come back and see everybody."
He said the show isn't about taking yourself too seriously.
"Sometimes music doesn't have to be so serious," he said. "Some of the greatest music we listen to is just fun."
The show will start at 8 p.m. Thursday.
"Robert Johnson. Muddy waters said it, too. B.B. King showed the world that blues is good for you," Zito sings on the title track from the new album.
And if anyone should know the positive, transformative power of the blues, it's Zito.
Tyler Graef/Southeast Missourian 12/9

-------------------
That atmosphere of positivity began at the album sessions, as Mike tracked alongside Grammy Award-winning producer (and co-writer) Tom Hambridge at the Sound Stage Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. "It was so much fun," Zito remembers. "It's a completely live album, where the musicians all set up and we just hit record and went for it. The energy was awesome and sometimes we'd just be laughing so hard because it was all so intense and exciting."

As the momentum gathered, the songs coalesced with an awesome flow, Mike painting in every shade of blue, from the frantic six-string showboating of "Crazy Legs" to the growling slow-burn of "Red Bird" and the smoky slide work on "Girl Back Home." "It was time," he says, "to get back to the blues and playing my guitar. Tom and I had spoken about making a kick ass blues-rock album for years. I like having fun and cutting loose - that's what this album is all about. "Chip Off The Block" was written for my oldest son, Zach Zito, who is the featured guitarist on this track. It's his first introduction into the music world and he did a great job. I couldn't be more proud of him. He graduates college next spring and joins me on tour in summer - I can't wait."

Meanwhile in his lyrics Mike searches for the silver linings in a troubled world. "I love writing songs and sharing deep feelings," he says. Zito describes "Road Dog," the album's wistful slow-blues travelogue as, "the most serious tune on the album. It's about the drama of life on the road. I know it can seem clichéd sometimes, but it's the life I lead. I miss my family, miss my wife, but this is what I do. I always leave."

Mike has spent over two decades on the run. He grew up in a hard-scrabble, blue-collar home in St. Louis, but after an early job at a downtown guitar shop exposed him to heavyweights like B.B. King, the Allmans and Eric Clapton (then the music of Joe Pass, Robert Johnson and Blind Willie Johnson), he set out to establish himself as a working musician. By 1997, Mike had released debut album Blue Room, and seemed to be going places. "The first time you hear yourself," he recalls, "you think, 'Wow, that almost sounds like music!'"

Then came the bumps in the road. By the early 2000's, alcoholism and drug abuse were threatening to rob Zito of his livelihood and talent, a period starkly addressed on the title track from 2011's acclaimed Greyhound album. "I just couldn't stop," he admits. "And a lot of the opportunities that I had back then - they kinda went away."

Thankfully, the epiphany of meeting the woman who would become his beloved wife put Mike back on the right path. In 2012, he found fresh inspiration as a member of  the A-list lineup of Royal Southern Brotherhood, then struck out with acclaimed solo albums Gone To Texas (2013) and Keep Coming Back (2015).
"I have many more hurdles to jump and more goals to strive for," he says, "but I'm very pleased and thankful with how I'm developing as an artist." This is powerfully demonstrated on Make Blues Not War, another step forward for this long-suffering disciple of the Blues. "I'm so proud of this new album," says Mike. "It's about the enjoyment I get when I listen to Johnny Winter and Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison. Their music makes me happy and reminds why I wanted to play guitar and play the blues. To be free and honest, loud and proud. I hope everyone enjoys listening to this album as much as I enjoyed making it..."

Modern life moves fast. Rolling news. Rapid-fire tweets. A relentless barrage of (mis)information. Make Blues Not War is an album that demands you sign out, log off and turn yourself over instead to the old-fashioned pleasures of great music. "We hear about everything 24/7 now," says Mike Zito. "The news never stops and it's all become propaganda. But when you turn off the news and turn on some blues, the world is a beautiful place. I think music is the cure for all ailments. Always has been. Always will be."

Ronnie Baker Brooks Announces Appearances To Support First New Album In Ten Years

RONNIE BAKER BROOKS ANNOUNCES CONFIRMED APPEARANCES
PLANNED TO SUPPORT RELEASE OF TIMES HAVE CHANGED,
HIS FIRST ALBUM IN TEN YEARS

Produced By Steve Jordan, Featuring Lonnie Brooks, “Big Head” Todd Mohr, Bobby “Blue”
Bland, Steve Cropper, Angie Stone, Eddie Willis, Al Kapone, Felix Cavaliere, Lee Roy Parnell
Out On Provogue / Mascot Label Group January 20, 2017

Chicago, IL --- Ronnie Baker Brooks has announced planned initial appearances for 2017.  Following the Legendary R&B Cruise – At Sea in late-January, he will begin the run at SPACE in Evanston, IL on February 3.  Additional shows are confirmed in St. Paul, Des Moines, Milwaukee and Dubuque (detail below).  Today, the second instant gratification track has been provided to purchasers in front of the January 20th release.

Brooks, 49, was born in Chicago, and started playing guitar around age six. At 19, he joined his father, Lonnie Brooks who by then had influenced some of the most well-known bluesman of our history: Jimmy Reed, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Johnny Winter, and Junior Wells. For 12 years, the two would tour together, putting Ronnie out front with Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Koko Taylor.

Times Have Changed, Brooks’ first album in ten years, carries with it the weight of grown perspective and time spent perfecting old material. Brooks worked it with Steve Jordan, whose work runs from Keith Richards to Stevie Wonder, John Mayer and Eric Clapton. With that comes a lesson in rhythm and blues history. Brooks refers to the director as “a walking encyclopedia of music detail and equipment”, a professor through which Brooks could take that next developmental step. “Once we got the ball rolling, my confidence went higher and higher”, he says. “I’m a better musician for this experience.”

The experience Brooks is talking about is that which came together over the course of a few weeks at Royal Studios in Memphis, the home of Al Green, Syl Johnson and Bobby “Blue” Bland. Jordan and Brooks brought in a mint press of Memphis music royalty: Stax Records staple Steve Cropper (Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave), Archie Turner (Al Green, Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright), jazz saxophonist Lannie McMillan, and R&B icon Angie Stone. For several tracks, Brooks also enlisted brothers Teenie (guitar), Charles (organ) and Leroy Hodges (bass) of the legendary Hi Rhythm Section, which served as the house band for hit soul albums by artists like Al Green and Ann Peebles. “We used the same mics that Al Green used on his record”, says Brooks. “Matter of fact, we were using much of the same band! It kind of took that vibe.” The first track recorded was a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly hit Give Me Your Love. The second, Twine Time, the instrumental jam from Alvin Cash.

Several tracks on Times Have Changed were recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studio in Nashville. “It had great hospitality, a great vibe, great tone, great equipment,” Brooks said. “And of course I got to get closer to some of the musicians who live there, Felix Cavaliere, Steve Cropper - they all live there, and it just created a great atmosphere. One of the key things for me was that we got Todd Mohr there, and he was willing to play rhythm guitar along with Lee Roy Parnell, so we got a nice little chemistry going with the three guitar parts together.”

‘Times’ also comes laden with original hits. Five of the eleven tracks were penned by Brooks. Raised on others’ music, he’s always considered the songwriting process to be as sacred. “It’s like having a baby”, he says. “You see it come to life. Once you play it live, it grows even more. That was the most fun part of it, for me: the creative side. Coming up with a song people can relate to, and you relate to, it just snowballs. It’s almost like therapy for me. Like the song Times Have Changed: I wrote that song years ago. I sent Steve my songs and he picked that one. It’s kind of timeless. Every day something’s changing. Now, when I play it live, you can see the effect of it. Initially, it was just an idea: just a riff. Now, this song has influence on people. We were just in Europe this year, after the bombing in Brussels. And we’re playing Brussels. I played that song; people were in tears. It helped them heal.”

The complete track listing features: “Show Me” (feat. Steve Cropper), “Doing Too Much” (feat. “Big Head” Todd Mohr, “Twine Time” (feat. Lonnie Brooks), “Times Have Changed” (feat. Al Kapone), “Long Story Short,” “Give Me Your Love (Love Song) (feat. Angie Stone), “Give The Baby Anything The Baby Wants” (feat. “Big Head” Todd Mohr & Eddie Willis), “Old Love” (feat. Bobby “Blue” Bland), “Come On Up” (feat. Felix Cavaliere & Lee Roy Parnell), “Wham Bam Thank You Sam,” “When I Was We.”

Brooks will stage the following appearances.  Additonal dates will be announced as they are confirmed:
1/21                                                                             Legenday R&B Cruise – At Sea
2.03     Evanston, IL                                                   SPACE

Donald Ray Johnson and Gas Blues Band - Bluesin' Around - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Bluesin' Around, from Donald Ray Johnson and Gas Blues Band and it's a different approach to the blues. Opening with BB King track, Bad Luck, Donald Ray Johnson gets the shuffle going leading on vocals and joined by Gaspard Ossikian on guitar, Pierre Cayla on guitar, Philippe Scemama on bass and Yannick Urbani on drums. The solid horn work of Samuel Dumont on sax and Nicolas Gardel on trumpet add to the original King feel and Daniel Antoine on Hammond super charges it. Joe Louis Walker's Bluesifyin' is up next and Johnson hit's his stride on vocals. With firm bass work by Scemama and tight guitar riffs from Gas and Cayla, this track hits the mark. Willie Dixon's Ain't Superstitious gets a cool remake with a rolling bass riff and altered guitar riff. This is one of my favorite tracks on the release clean guitar riffs and blues intentions. Philip Walker's Ninety Proof is a super slow blues with horn backing. Antoine's Hammond sets the track off nicely and lead guitar work by Gas and Cayla as well as a cool solo by Gardel on trumpet really sets this track off. Another Philip Walker track, Big Rear Window, benefits nicely from a solid rolling bass line and easy rhythm guitar line. Johnson's relaxed vocals and lead guitar riffs blend nicely. A Taste Of Honey's R&B track, Distant pushes out the envelope a bit with a funky bottom and wah wah guitar but it's groove is cool. Nat Dove's She's Dressing Trashy, follows a standard 12 bar format and gives Gas and Cayla each a nice stretch on lead guitar. High stepping, Should've Been Gone, is really cool with soulful sax lead by Dumont. This is a really cool track and another of my favorites on the release with a stiff, bluesy guitar solo hitting it. Wrapping the release is Lucky Peterson's shuffle, You're The One For Me. No Peterson track would be complete without cool organ and swinging BB King like guitar riffs make this a nice closer for an interesting release.

Founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, drummer Butch Trucks, is joined onstage by world-renowned blues guitar slinger Damon Fowler, who brings his highly-acclaimed playing and unique vocals to the Freight Train stage and music. Fowler recently released his fifth full-length album to the delight of audiences worldwide. Florida-based percussionist Garrett Dawson, of The Dickey Betts Band, adds his unique rhythms and percussive style to the musical mix. Also on guitar is renowned blues Hall of Famer, Chris Vitarello. Chris has performed with iconic musicians including Bernard Purdie, John Hammond and Jimmy McGriff to name a few. The newest member of The Freight Train is 27-year-old Matt Walker on Fender Bass. He brings an energy borrowed from a lineage of musicians both old and new; from The Muscle Shoals sound to finger- picking ragtime. Rounding out the band is the young and very talented Heather Gillis, whose vocals, guitar playing, and performance tie together this amazing representation of the past, present and future of Roots Rock and the Blues.

                                   Butch Trucks - Some Background

Born in Jacksonville, FL, one of Butch Trucks' first bands was local Jacksonville band The Vikings, who made one 7-inch record in 1964. Another early band Trucks was a member of was called The 31st of February, which broke up in 1968. This group's lineup eventually included both Duane Allman and Gregg Allman. They recorded a cover of "Morning Dew", by 1960s folk singer Bonnie Dobson.

Trucks then helped form The Allman Brothers Band in 1969, along with Duane Allman (guitar), Gregg Allman (vocals and organ), Dickey Betts (guitar), Berry Oakley (bass), and fellow drummer Jai Johanny Johanson. Together, the two drummers developed a rhythmic drive that would prove crucial to the band. Trucks laid down a powerful conventional beat while the jazz-influenced Johanson added a second laminate of percussion and ad libitum cymbal flourishes, seamlessly melded into one syncopated sound. Said founding member and co-lead guitarist Dickey Betts of Trucks' addition to the original band lineup, "...When Butch came along, he had that freight train, meat-and-potatoes kind of thing that set Jaimoe up perfectly. He had the power thing we needed."

Trucks continued to record and perform with the Allman Brothers Band until they disbanded in 2014. In 2015 Trucks performed at two festivals with a band billed as, "Butch Trucks & Very Special Friends."

Butch Truck's nephew, Duane Trucks, is currently playing drums for renowned jam-blues band Widespread Panic, and Hard Working Americans. His oldest son, guitarist Vaylor Trucks, is in Atlanta-based group, The Yeti Trio. Trucks currently maintains residences in both West Palm Beach, and France.

Blues Legend Popa Chubby Releases New Album “The Catfish”

Blues Legend Popa Chubby Releases New Album “The Catfish”

Popa Chubby Is The Catfish. Popa Chubby sits alone at the river's edge, guitar in hand he serenades the waters knowing if the song is sweet and the wind is right The Catfish will bite. Music is the bait, music is the water of life and Popa Chubby swims deeply in the swelling tides. Popa Chubby Is The Catfish.

But Who Is The Catfish? The road is long and goes on forever, the minnows and guppies must bow to the big fish. His guitar strings are the line that reaches to the deepest part of the soul. Many rivers to cross, the Catfish knows he is the boss. The king! Le Roi! The Mac Daddy! Fat, elusive, badass, too smart for the nets of those who would try to label him. The songs, stronger then ever, paint pictures , tell stories, of love, of life, of women and of the world. The music soaring to new heights. Fearless, brave, loud.

Says Popa Chubby, “This recording is dedicated to you. You inspire me every day. You make me want to play better, write better, sing better. I love you all, you are all diverse and beautiful and you lead my back to who I truly am. Listen loud, long and often. I remain your humble servant hopefully older, wiser, louder, stronger. I thank the almighty force of creativity, light and love in the universe. Jah Jah vibration always. Stay true, stay strong, stay resolute.”

“On his newest release The Catfish, Popa Chubby offers up 12 tunes that embody the badass attitude that defines the self-proclaimed 'King Of The New York City Blues'. The Catfish is aptly titled as it delivers punch after punch of musical inspiration drawing on 25 plus years of street smarts and road worthy musicianship. The Catfish embodies the concepts that make Popa Chubby who he is. Regal and Delicious, the recording shines with multiple flavor and worldliness.” -  Blues Magazine NL
