They Call Me Little Devil - Prado Blues Band

Igor Prado fell in love with the guitar when he was 11 years old. Self-taught and left-handed, Igor learned to play the guitar upside down and backwards (with the thinnest string on top) and once he discovered the blues, he took on the most challenging undertaking – to study and play the blues in Brazil. Currently, he plays in the “Prado Blues Band”, which is a group dedicated to Blues / West Coast Swing / Jump Rhythm & Blues. The band has released 3 CD’s in Brazil and distributed in the United States under the label Pacific Blues Records in which became one of the leading albuns among all blues artists.

During his solo career Igor released his first solo album called "Upsidedown" with special guests like R.J Mischo, Steve Guyger, Greg Wilson, Ron Dziubla (Sax player of Lynwood Slim, Kid Ramos), J.J Jackson and others. It was named after his lefty, upsidedown playing techniques and also because of the fact that he is a ‘south american playing blues’.

Igor and his band has also played in many tours with different international artists such as Eddie C. Campbell, Steve Guyger, James Wheeler, Phil Guy, Bob Stroger, Mud Morganfield (the oldest son of muddy waters), R.J Mischo, Mark Hummel, Lynwood Slim, Gary Smith, Mitch Kashmar, Rick Estrin (Little Charlie & The Nightcats) and Kim Wilson & Billy Flynn (2011).

Bloodshot Records artist: Exene Cervenka - The Excitement of Maybe - New Release Review

I just received a copy of Exene Cervenka's new recording, "The Excitement of Maybe".
Many know Exene as a lead member and co-founder of the legendary Los Angeles punk rock band, X.

Following the formal breakup of X, a band she still performs with on occasion, Exene continued her transformation into a more formidable solo artist by continuing to write musically, releasing critically acclaimed solo albums (1989’s Old Wives’ Tale and 1990’s Running Scared), within the print medium through poetry and books, in spoken word performances, and as a visual artist. She has also been a member of the groups Auntie Christ, the Original Sinners and the Knitters.

In this, Exene's latest endeavor, she puts together a collection of songs about being in love, loves lost and forgetting love. “In the early sixties I heard great song after great song. Ray Price, The Shirelles, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Brenda Lee, Ray Charles. And almost all of them love songs. Sad ones, happy ones, funny ones, tragic ones. That’s what five year- old Exene figured out. But love, on the other hand, I can’t ever seem to figure out.”

Exene's newest endeavor runs the gamut of orchestral accompaniment, horn sections and pedal steel guitar. The simpler tunes like "Alone in Arizona" and "Long Time Ago" showcase the sensitivity of Exene's voice and writing capabilities. "I Wish It Would Stop Raining" has the haunting minor harmonies of an Appalachian folk song with fiddle accompaniment.

This is the continuation of a journey by a successful artist which if sure to add more followers to an already solid fan base.

Liam Tarpey Band: DOWNLOAD FREE CD!: Recording Review

I have just had the opportunity to download the free...yes that's FREE "download cd" on Liam Tarpey Bands Facebook Page (Tap the title of the blog entry above) to go to Liam's download page. Liam and the band have put together an interesting set of tunes, including original and cover tunes. The opening tune, "On My Neck" is a real jammer in the realm of Beck's Boogie. My only complaint is it ends too soon! The recording continues with a mixture of covers of Eobert Johnson, Wilbert Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix and Larry Davis as well as a number of originals. I found the recording very enjoyable especially Tarpey's relentless attack on his guitar. Every note isn't in place but the feeling is all there and it's real! The standout tracks are "On My Neck" and Warm Up My Bones". Get your copy today... I mean...hey...it's free...and I think you'll like it!
The Liam Tarpey Band are an energetic young Blues trio from London UK, comprising of Liam Tarpey (guitar and vocals), Rob Millard (bass and vocals) and James Taylor (drums). They formed in 2011, have been gigging extensively since and released their acclaimed debut album in October of the same year. With constant airplay on UK and international Blues radios, and album reviews in big publications such as Classic Rock Magazine, they are rapidly gaining a solid fan base.

Damn Good Speller - Gary Primich

Gary Primich (April 20, 1958 – September 23, 2007) was an American blues harmonica player, singer, guitarist and songwriter. He is best known for his 1995 album, Mr. Freeze.
Gary Alan Primich was born in Chicago, Illinois, but grew up in nearby Hobart, Indiana. In 1984, after he graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Indiana University, Primich relocated to Austin, Texas.

While working at the University of Texas, he started playing along with other musicians in local clubs. In 1987, he met Jimmy Carl Black, and they formed the Mannish Boys. Their debut album, A L'il Dab'll Do Ya was issued on the Amazing Records label, and although Black then left the band, Primich stayed with the Mannish Boys for another album, Satellite Rock. In 1991 Primich released his eponymous solo debut album, and My Pleasure followed the next year. Amazing Records then folded, and Primich was contracted to the Flying Fish Records label releasing Travelin' Mood (1994) and Mr. Freeze (1995). Mr. Freeze was named as one of the twenty best blues albums of the 1990s by the Chicago newspaper, New City.

Constant touring allowed Primich to expand his fan base, and by 2000, he had a recording contract with the Texas Music Group. He issued Dog House Music (2002) and then Ridin' the Darkhorse (2006). Primich also recorded with Steve James, Omar & the Howlers, John "Juke" Logan, Marcia Ball, Ruthie Foster, Mike Morgan and the Crawl, Nick Curran, Doyle Bramhall and Jimmie Vaughan.

In addition to his performance albums, in 1985 Primich released an instructional double CD, Blues Harmonica: The Blues And Beyond. In June 1999, at the Montgomery Theater in San Jose, California, Primich undertook a performance and series of workshops with Howard Levy, Magic Dick, Gary Smith, Lee Oskar, Jerry Portnoy, and Andy Santana. He was inducted in the Austin Music Hall of Fame.

In September 2007, Primich died at his home in Austin, at the age of 49, of acute heroin intoxication.

Help Me - Devils Creek

Here's something a bit different. These guys are heavily influenced by Rory Gallagher, Status Quo and early 70's British bluesy hard rock. They've got a great groove in the rhythm section, a fine guitarist in Guy Rosewell, and their album 'Bullfrog Blues' is recommended! - (Rick Stuart, Roots and Fusion, Pure Radio 107.8FM).. Guy Rosewall - Lead Guitar / Vocals.. Tim Chapple - Bass.. Alan Ibbotson - Drums / Vocals

Texas Flood - Larry Davis (1958)

Larry Davis (December 4, 1936 – April 19, 1994) was an American electric Texas blues and soul blues musician. He is best known for co-composing the song "Texas Flood", later recorded to greater commercial success by Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Davis swapped playing the drums to learn to play the bass guitar. In the mid 1950s, Davis had a working partnership with Fenton Robinson, and following the recommendation of Bobby Bland was given a recording contract by the Duke label. Davis had three singles released, which included "Texas Flood" and "Angels in Houston". Thereafter, Davis had limited opportunity in the recording studio. He resided in St. Louis, Missouri for a while, and played bass in Albert King's group. He also learned conventional guitar at this time, as the original guitar playing on Davis's recording of "Texas Flood" was by Robinson.

Several single releases on the Virgo and Kent labels followed, but in 1972 a motorcycle accident temporarily paralyzed Davis' left side. He returned a decade later with an album released by Rooster Blues, Funny Stuff, which was produced by Oliver Sain. He won four W.C. Handy Awards in 1982, yet a decade on he was known only to blues specialists. His 1987 Pulsar LP, I Ain't Beggin' Nobody, proved difficult even for blues enthusiasts to locate.

In 1992, Bullseye Blues issued another Davis offering, Sooner or Later, that highlighted his booming vocals and Albert King influenced guitar work. Fate then came calling again and Davis died of cancer in April 1994, at the age of 57.

I Put A Spell On You - Samantha Fish Blues Band

Just a few months ago, very few people outside Kansas City, Missouri knew there was a young, dynamic musician named Samantha Fish getting ready to take the world by storm. In fact, it's not all that long ago that the 22-year-old singer/guitarist first discovered the blues and started paying her dues on that city's local scene. With Runaway, her solo debut, she now breaks out big time, announcing herself as a newcomer to be reckoned with.

Samantha FishThe album's ten tracks - nine of them originals - incorporate "all the sounds I grew up with, with my own spin," says Fish, who seems to have spent her formative years in the Midwest soaking up a vast array of musical styles. Runaway features sharp-edged, riff-driven blues ("Down in the Swamp"), breakneck boogies ("Runaway"), smoky, late-night jazz ("Feelin' Alright") as well as hints of the sultry 70s hard rock of Ann and Nancy Wilson and the 4/4 ruggedness of the Rolling Stones. Throughout, Fish demonstrates astonishing range and depth as a songwriter. Her vocals are cool, confident and nothing less than beguiling.

Backing her on this eclectic collection of modern electric blues is the same crack team that first convened for the making of Girls With Guitars. That collaboration with fellow female artists Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde, released earlier this year, already showed that Fish refuses to be intimidated, even when working with musicians more experienced than herself. "They are incredibly talented and creative, so it made for fun sessions," she says of the well-oiled studio band heard on Runaway. Jamie Little, one of the UK's most in-demand drummers, reunites with bassist Cassie Taylor to give the record plenty of rhythmic thump. Producer Mike Zito, a St. Louis native and 2010 Blues Music Award winner, adds thick, meaty electric guitar on most cuts. "Mike and I have known each other for a few years now, so he knew the sound and style I was after. He did a great job of taking ideas and giving them direction in the studio setting."

In between making these first two albums, Fish spent a month on the road with Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde for the first leg of the year-long Blues Caravan Tour. It gave her the valuable opportunity to road-test the material heard on Runaway to a discriminating audience. With an exciting new debut album now in her back pocket, the tour continues throughout the summer and into the fall of 2011, touching down at many European and North American festivals and even taking to the seas on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise in October.

Rock Me Baby - Earnest "Guitar" Roy

The Man and the music speaks for itself. Earnest ”Guitar” Roy is truly fulfilling his dream. Earnest Roy, Jr. was born on September 25th, 1958 in Clarksdale, Mississippi under the watchful eye of his late, great father and guitarist, Earnest Roy, Sr, who worked with Jackie Brinston, Ike Turner, John Lee Hooker, Wade Walton, Raymond Hill and many of the other Clarksdale bluesman. Earnest Sr. was in a book called, “Conversation with the Blues” by Paul Oliver. Earnest’s father taught him bass guitar at the early age of five, and when Earnest turned eight, he began playing in his fathers band, “Earnest Roy and the Clarksdale Rockers”, who's members included Big Jack Johnson, C.V. Ville, and Raymond Hill. At age eleven, Earnest Jr. began playing lead guitar. Earnest Jr. formed his first band, First Choice, at age
fourteen. It was at this time that he began playing blues and jazz music that developed into his own style, “Bluejazz”. The national exposure of First Choice led to an offer as a regular performer on Soul Train. At the time, however, the fourteen year old decided to finish high school. At seventeen, Earnest moved to Dayton, Ohio and joined a band called, Black Satin Soul. In 1989, Jim O’Neal , the president and C.E.O. of Rooster Blues Records signed Earnest “Guitar” Roy to the Rooster Blues label and released a single called “Too Many Women And I Wanna Know What My Little Girl’s Been Doing”. The song was written in a San Diego hotel room while touring and playing backup guitar for the late blues great, Albert King. From 1993 to 2001, Earnest played for the international televangelist and pastor, Rod Parsley, whose breakthrough ministry aired on 320 nations around the world. In 2001, Earnest “Guitar” Roy returned to his blues roots when he began touring and appearing at blues and jazz festivals with the blues legend, Sam Carr. Earnest also toured Australia in cities such as Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Byron Bay, and Brisbane to name a few. While in the U.S., Earnest played at The House Of Blues in Orlando, Fl. with Joe Turner. Earnest’s other credits include playing drums on Big Jack Johnson’s first album “Oil Man”, and playing lead guitar and drums on Frank Frost’s “Midnight Prowler” album (Earnest has writing credit for the song "Earnest’s Groove"). The song appeared on the Earwig Music Label. Bob Eagle, an Australian Blues Historian, said, “Earnest plays lovely, thoughtful original solos. Earnest is not another B.B. or Albert King, but is one of the few original voices on guitar. He has a happy knack of writing good songs and performing them convincingly. Earnest inherited his father's brand of playing and his father's band name, Earnest "Guitar" Roy and the Clarksdale Rockers.

Troubador Records Artist: Roy Trevino - Self Titled

I have just received the new Roy Trevino release entitle "Roy Trevino". The recording covers a lot of ground with plenty of lush lead and slide playing. This is a 10 track recording all penned by Trevino. The musical construction is radio oriented blues with plenty of hooks. Many bases are covered here including Bo Diddley, Bob Marley, Santana/Los Lonely Boys and straight up rock. The stand out track on the recording is "Thank You". Give it a spin!

Her Life - Marie Knight

She was born Marie Roach in Sanford, Florida but grew up in Newark, New Jersey. Her father was a construction worker and the family were members of the Church of God in Christ. She first toured as a singer in 1939 with Frances Robinson, an evangelist. She married preacher Albert Knight in 1941; they were later divorced.

In 1946, she made her first recordings, for Signature Records, as a member of The Sunset Four. Shortly afterwards, Sister Rosetta Tharpe saw her singing at the Golden Gate Auditorium in Harlem, on a bill with Mahalia Jackson, and invited Knight to join her on tour. Tharpe recognized "something special" in Marie's contralto voice. Knight continued to record and perform with Tharpe through the 1940s, sometimes acting out the parts of "the Saint and the Sinner", with Tharpe as the saint and Knight as the sinner. Among their successes were the songs "Beams of Heaven", "Didn't it Rain", and "Up Above My Head", recorded for Decca Records. "Up Above My Head", credited jointly to both singers, reached # 6 on the US R&B chart at the end of 1948, and Knight's solo version of "Gospel Train" reached # 9 on the R&B chart in 1949.

She left Tharpe to go solo around 1951, and put together a backing group, The Millionaires (Thomasina Stewart, Eleonore King and Roberta Jones), with whom she recorded the 1956 album Songs of the Gospel. She also began recording secular R&B music in the late 1950s, for various labels including Decca, Mercury, Baton, Okeh, Diamond and Addit. Her duet with Rex Garvin, credited as Marie & Rex, "I Can't Sit Down" released on the Carlton label, reached # 94 on the pop chart in 1959. In the late 1950s she also toured Britain as a guest of Humphrey Lyttelton. In 1961 she recorded the single "Come Tomorrow", which was later a hit for Manfred Mann. Knight's version of "Cry Me a River" reached # 35 on the U.S. Billboard R&B charts in 1965. She toured with Brook Benton, the Drifters, and Clyde McPhatter, and regularly reunited onstage with Rosetta Tharpe. She remained friends with Tharpe, and helped arrange her funeral in 1973. In 1975, having given up performing secular music, she recorded another gospel album, Marie Knight: Today.

In 2002, Knight made a comeback in the gospel world, recording for a tribute album to Tharpe. She also released a full-length album, Let Us Get Together, on her manager's label in 2007. She died in Harlem of complications from pneumonia, on August 30, 2009.

Don't Answer The Door - Melvin Taylor

Melvin Taylor (born March 13, 1959, Jackson, Mississippi, United States) is an American electric blues guitarist, based in Chicago, Illinois.
Born in Mississippi, Taylor relocated to Chicago in 1962.

In his adolescence, Taylor joined The Transistors, a band managed by his future father-in-law, playing popular music of the 1970s at talent shows and nightclubs. After the Transistors broke up in the early 1980s, Taylor devoted his attention to playing blues in the Chicago's West Side clubs.

During the 1980s he joined Pinetop Perkins and The Legendary Blues Band in a year long European tour, and since the late 1980s he has been making regular tours of Europe with his own group, where they have opened for B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Santana.

Taylor's recordings include two he first recorded for a French record label: Blues on the Run, originally recorded in 1982, and 1984's Plays the Blues for You. Back in the US, Taylor signed to Evidence Music and entered the studio with John Snyder to record Melvin Taylor and the Slack Band, which showcased his original songwriting. He returned in late 1996 to record his second US album, Dirty Pool. Taylor's debut remains the Evidence label's best-selling release.

Though his singing is relaxed, even sometimes conversational, his guitar improvisations have much of Jimi Hendrix's tightly curled strength.

Please note that this is not Taylor singing on this track...just for clarification.

He use to play regularly at Rosa's Lounge in Chicago. Taylor's most recent album, Beyond the Burning Guitar, was recorded in Misty Creek Studios in Fairfax, Virginia. He also recorded a cover of the Eminem song, "Love The Way You Lie" with the rapper, Matt Christian, at Misty Creek Studios.

Marcel Marsupial Records artist: Boy Wells - Blue Skies Calling - New Release Review

I just received the new recording from Boy Wells called "Blue Skies Calling". I have to admit I was unaware of Wells until he was called to my attention only a few months ago. The recording starts out with a horn driven song that you'd never expect.... I mean if you like that jam groove with sax and trumpet with guitar overlay...you'll love this. The recording continues with a more southern rock tune with the slide guitar and harp blazing. The third track, "Bring it Back" is a stand out track with great horns, vocals and guitar. The recording progresses into a jazzy blues on the fourth track but then makes an abrupt turn on the title track for more of a southern country ballad (a'la Dickey Betts). On the 6th track, Love in Vain" which we previewed in our previous post for the announcement of this cd, Wells conjures up the environment of a smokey 50's blues ballad with the screaming horns, and screaming guitars that is likely to please anyone who listens. The recording then returns to more of a ballad driven tune that could easily have been penned by JJ Cale again with strong guitar support.A continuation of the southern rock sound with the twin guitar leads and solid vocals. Tova, an acoustic instrumental is a nice break near the end of the cd folowed by Devils Backbone Blues which is pretty much a raw blues tune with voice, tambourine and resonator (possibly one of the best tunes on the cd. "Tin Winter" is pure bluegrass and a lot of fun. The recording is concluded with "Traveller" which is another bluegrass type tune. Overall this recording takes you on a pretty nice audible journey through America. Enjoy the ride. I do have to say as a separate comment, he can really play. This cd touches on most every genre a man would likely hear growing up in southern Maryland. Wells like many others boys his age at the time were drawn to the guitar by the likes of Duane Allman. He met guitar legend Danny Gatton when he was in his teens and they became friends ... Wells taking guitar lessons and learning about hot rods...another of Gatton's passions. Wells is joined on this recording by John Prevetti on bass (Danny Gatton), Bruce Crump on drums (Molly Hatchett), Rickie Simkins on violin and mandolin (Emmylou Harris) among others. Also included on this recording is an unbelievable extra... a recording of a 1 hour guitar lesson between Wells and Gatton. This is worth half the price of admission itself. If you don't know Gatton...check my library. That man was a terrific showman and guitar player!
