I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Ruf Records artists: Honey Island Swamp Band - Demolition Day - New release review

I just received the newest release, Demolition Day, from Honey Island Swamp Band and it's quite entertaining. Opening with a full blown rocker, How Do You Feel with a Stones vibe, Aaron Wilkinson on guitar, Chris Mule on guitar, Sam Price on bass, Garland Paul on drums and Trevor Brooks on keys get this track rockin. With strong piano support, key guitar riffs and a sassy Bobby keys like sax solo this track is a great opener. Head High Water Blues has a swampy, Band meets Little Feat groove. Price's bass work on this track, nicely balanced with Brook's keyboard really hits on full behind the vocal work of the band. High plains rider, No Easy Way, has an ethereal western sound blended with a jazz flavor. Subdued slide guitar work and nicely accented horn work gives this track a real cool feel. Medicated has a modern R&B feel bringing to mind a lot of the J Geils tracks with solid vocals and horn backing over a solid bass line. A nicely articulated guitar solo gives the track that extra something that sets it apart. Watch and Chain is a funky rocker with a cool Rhodes piano solo over solid slide work. Acoustic guitar work and harp by Wilkinson on Katie has a Louisiana country pop feel. These unconventional textures in music coming to my desk are unconventional. Very nice. Ain't No Fun is a slide driven blues rocker. Prominent bass work by Price stands tall and nice vocal blending makes this a prime radio track. She Goes Crazy has a cool, easy 2 step rhythm and nice horn interplay. Through Another Day is a really interesting track with a bit of a Lynyrd Skynyrd swagger. Wilkinson's mandolin work on this track, contrasted against the slide work and nicely blended vocals makes this one of my favorites on the track. Say It Isn't True has a real full sound in "Band" like fashion. One of the strongest vocal tracks on the release and again with Benoit on pedal steel, Wilkinson harp and a rocky rhythm guitar by Mule, a strong ballad. Wrapping the release is Devil's Den, a blues based, finger picked track with a western flavor with nicely crafted lap steel work by Benoit and mando by Wilkinson. Key rhythm shots by Paul and solid vocals make this a real nice track to close a subtly cool release.

The Stoney B Blues Band Stoney B is the real deal, a true Blues Man. He was born in Chicago. He grew up listening to his father, Lil’ Howlin’ Wolf, playing the Blues and his dad learnt his Blues from the Chicago Blues Legend, Howling Wolf. Stoney B’s soulful licks and brilliant guitar riffs and his dynamic vocals will transfix you as he delivers heart and soul felt Blues. His Band has Lance Dieckmann who is a well known and highly respected local musician whose powerful Vocals and Harmonica playing always leaves people amazed. On the Keyboards is Pat Kelley a wonderful entertainer and musician. The Band is backed on the Bass by Doug Brunelle and on Drums by Paul Carlomagno.

With so much experience under their belt, what this band excels at is connecting quickly with a crowd and taking them down a transformational journey through music that everyone can relate to - the blues.

In addition to this great musical lineup Malone's has a great variety of beer, booze and food to satisfy your taste buds.

And as if that's not enough,Israeli Blues great, Lazer Lloyd has donated a vintage white Dean Bel-Aire used by Lazer in the video for his hit single "Burning Thunder" which was an exclusive premiere on Vintage Guitar magazine in part due to the inclusion of this beautiful white guitar against the lush green backdrop of Chastain Park in Atlanta where the video was shot.Ticket for the raffle are available at the Festival and on the OCBS website at http://www.orangecountybluessociety.com/TICKETS.html

Buddy Guy, one of this year's Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients, is headlining the October cruise, marking his First Appearance Ever on our Blues Cruise Charters!

"Whenever I accept an award like this I do it for all the Blues men and women who came before me and never got the recognition they truly deserved." - Buddy Guy
For a man who name is nearly synonymous with the Chicago blues sound, Buddy Guy has one of the warmest smiles in the business. Rock titans, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards and Stevie Ray Vaughan have all cited him as a major influence on their own music. Now 78, the 2005 inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has barely slowed down as he continues to encourage and inspire a new generation of musicians.
A Self-Taught Legend: Born to Louisiana sharecroppers Sam and Isabel Guy on July 30, 1936, George "Buddy" Guy taught himself to play guitar as a young boy. He took a train to Chicago in 1957, and landed at the famous 708 Club where he became a sideman for legends such as Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Muddy Waters. By the early 1960s, Guy was a first-call session man at Chess Records.
After years of touring and recording, the musician opened Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago in June of 1989. As the premiere blues club in the world, its stage has hosted myriad of blues and rock greats. Guy inked a deal with Silvertone for three albums that began with the 1991 comeback smash Damn Right, I've Got the Blues (reissued in 2005), which he followed up with 1993′s Feels Like Rain and 1994′s Slippin' In. All three earned Grammy Awards.
Guy has firmly cemented a blues legacy that places him squarely in the company of his heroes who came before. In 2012, he published his autobiography, When I Left Home: My Story. He has said he feels an obligation to keep their legacy alive. Guy still holds a 16-show residency at his eponymous Legends club in Chicago every January. After one of his shows seven years ago, Guy met then eight-year-old Quinn Sullivan (who also joins us on LRBC #25), a budding blues guitarist. Now a mentor to the teenaged musician, Guy tours with him and produced his first album. "I learn from Buddy every day," Sullivan says.
