I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

AWARD-WINNING BLUES WILD MAN DEBUTS!

*** MATT HILL ***

You could call him "a young Howlin Wolf", "a Southern wild man" or you could come up with your own term. Whatever you call him, he knows how to rock a house to it's foundation! And these are the reasons why North Carolina native Matt Hill is making huge waves as a recent 2011 Blues Music Awards Winner and one of the most talked about electric acts on the blues scene today. Onstage Hill is completely uninhibited, driving audiences wild with his “whatever it takes” boundless stage antics. His voice, guitar playing, and his magnetic energy surely will take him straight to the top.

Hill started playing live in his teens and eventually started playing with local blues icons Max Drake and Chuck Cotton in a band called The Buzzkillz, and sitting in with Bob Margolin. Soon Matt was joining Bob Margolin on tour, playing with the likes of Blues heroes like Carey Bell, Hubert Sumlin, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Calvin "Fuzz" Jones, Pinetop Perkins, and Nappy Brown. Somewhere along the line, Matt developed a totally uninhibited, ferociously raving stage presence that harkens back to the heydays of Howlin' Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis and Nappy Brown.

In September 2010 the Vizztone Label Group released Matt's debut album ON THE FLOOR which received great reviews and in May 2011 won the award for Best New Artist Debut at the Blues Music Awards (formally the W.C. Handy Awards) in Memphis TN. A couple months later Matt was also nominated for two awards at the Blues Blast Awards in Chicago IL. One for "Best New Artist Debut" and the other for the "Sean Costello Rising Star Award."

DO NOT miss this one. MATT HILL is a total mind-blower! He will perform from 8:30 pm til 9:30 pm with a killer back-up band: KIRK FLETCHER (guitar), CHRIS MILLAR (drums) and RICK REED (bass).

Below is a video sample of MATT HILL doing his thing:

AND A ROCKIN' MIDWEST

HARP-LEAD BLUES BAND TOO!

THE JAY EDWARD BAND

The exciting JAY EDWARD BAND is a harmonica-fueled unit worthy of being the headliner themselves! With a hard-hitting Chicago blues approach akin to early Paul Butterfield, they have most-recently added a great keyboard player who plays immaculate counterpoint to the soulful electric guitar, blazing harmonica and thrilling propulsive rhythm section.

Our humble prediction: These guys are going to totally blow everyone away. Do not miss their brief but heavenly half-hour slot from 8 pm til 8:30 pm.

San-Ho-Zay - Kirk Fletcher with Vladimir Rusinov & the Jumping Cats

Vladimir Rusinov & The Jumping Cats were formed in 2003 in Moscow by guitar player Vladimir Rusinov. Since then the band has played numerous club gigs and successfully participated in festivals all over Russia and abroad. Some of the highlights include Himalayan Blues Festival 2011 (Nepal), August Blues 2011 (Estonia), Moscow International Blues Festivals (Russia), Belgrade Blues Festival 2009 (Serbia), Blues Nights 2009 (Lithuania), Minsk Blues Festival 2009 (Belarus), Neva Delta Blues festivals (St Petersburg), Empty Hills festivals and all the festivals organized by the Russian Blues Society (blues.ru).

Every week the band presents a blues show "The Jumping Tuesdays" at the Moscow's renown Roadhouse Blues Club. More than 40 musicians from Russia, Norway, Belarus and Ukraine were featured in these series of gigs as special guests. The Jumpin' cats earned a reputation of a very reliable band, which is why the foreign musicians often choose it as an accompanying band when touring Russia. Band played with John Nemeth, JW Jones, Kirk Fletcher, Robert Lighthouse and many others.

Vladimir Rusinov is a powerful and soulful guitar player and singer. After winning the Russian Hendrix Contest in 2002 he has shifted to west-coast blues style and spent a lot of time playing jump and swing blues with different bands. Later he started his own project entitled "The Jumping Cats" which delivers a mixture of blues styles spicing it up with swing, funk, surf and soul. Vladimir has shared the stage with such artists as Rick Holmstrom, Enrico Crivellaro, Tad Robinson, Alex Shultz, John Primer, Lurrie Bell, Eddie C. Campbell, Phil Guy, Vidar Busk, Kid Andersen and many others.

Mikhail Belov (bass) and Ksenia Dubrovskaya (drums) form one of the best rhythm-sections in Russia. They add the right groove and swing to the sound of the band. The lineup of the band hasn't changed since the day it was formed. Jumping Cats is a solid band that has proven that it can can rock small venues, as well as big open-air festivals.

Delta Groove Artists: Tail Dragger and Bob Corritore - Longtime Friends in the Blues : Review

I just had the opportunity to review the new recording by Bob Corritore and Tail Dragger. Longtime Friends In The Blues will be formally released on March 20, 2012. Tail Dragger wrote 9 of the ten tracks included on this Chicago Blues infused release. The band is made up of numerous veteran artists. In addition to Tail Dragger on vocals and of course Corritore on harp, Henry Gray plays Piano, Kirk Fletcher and Chris James play guitar, Patrick Rynn plays bass and Brian Fahey plays drums. The recording begins with I'm Worried and Tail Dragger takes no time in demonstrating his trademark vocals and his Howlin' Wold influence. Sugar Mama finds Tail Dragger and Henry Gray trading off on vocals. This track shows some particularly cool guitar riffs and of course always Corritore staying tight with his harp. Birthday Blues is a great uptempo blues with strong soloing by Corritore. She's Worryin' Me is a great tune with Corritore winding his harp up a little and great understated guitar work under the mix. Cold Outdoors is another solid track with some strong piano work by Gray and of course solid vocals by Tail Dragger and some great harp voicing from Corritore. So Ezee is a cool driving blues and possibly the best track on the release. The tempo is just solid and Corritore is right on the back of Tail Dragger blowin his harp and the guitars kick in some really great riffs. Through With You is the first slow blues on the release and is very effective in grabbing the sound. All of the instrumentalists get a chance to show their stuff and Dragger leads the way. Done Got Old picks the tempo back up and gets the groove going really well. This is real Chicago! Boogie Woogie Ball, another of my favorites, gives Gray a chance to take the lead and he doesn't hold back. He does a great job on hammering out a great boogie on the keys and leaves space for some nice guitar soloing as well as the rest of the band to strut their stuff. Please Mr. Jailer, another slow blues track finds Tail Dragger beggin the jailer to have mercy on his girl. This is another strong track and another where Corritore blows some great licks. You like Chicago blues? This is the place!

As a side note Corritore and Tail Dragger first met at a Howlin' Wolf tribute in Chicago the day after Wolf died back in 1976. Gray performed and recorded with Wolf for 12 years.

This track isn't on the release but is representative of the music on the cd. Enjoy!

Boarder Town Blues - Mannish Boys feat. Finis Tasby

The Mannish Boys are a blues band based in Los Angeles, California. They play classic blues in West Coast, Texas and Chicago styles.

Led by vocalist Finis Tasby, the band consists of all-star veteran members of the West Coast blues scene. The band debuted from Delta Groove Productions in 2004 with the album That Represent Man. The members on the debut CD were Finis Tasby (vocals), Kirk Fletcher (guitar), Franck Goldwasser (guitar), Leon Blue (piano), Ronnie James Weber (bass) and June Core (drums). The CD featured guests including Roy Gaines, Paul Oscher, and Mickey Champion. They have been making appearances at festivals in the U.S., Canada, and also in Europe.

It may be best to consider this band to be a loose session project as the lineup changes from recordings to recordings and also from shows to shows. Bobby Jones, a blues and soul vocalist from Chicago came on board as a special guest on Big Plans (2007), and became an official member soon after.

The Mannish Boys Lowdown Feeling was nominated in the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards for 'Blues Album of the Year'.

San Ho Zay - Kirk Fletcher Band

As a two time W.C. Handy Award nominee, who has toured with Lynwood Slim, Janiva Magness, Charlie Musselwhite and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, as well as performing with James Cotton, Pine Top Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Mojo Buford, Ted Harvey, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Michael Landau, Elvin Bishop, Ronnie Earl, Doyle Bramhall, Michelle Branch and many more… Kirk Fletcher is considered one of the best young guitar players on the blues scene today.
Born 1975 in Bellflower California, Kirk began playing guitar at age eight after watching his brother Walter perform at their father’s church. At age twelve he attended the Long Beach Blues Festival where he saw the likes of Albert Collins, Bobby Blue Bland, (accompanied by Wayne Bennett) and the Staple Singers. This was a life changing experience for him as he realized that this was the music he wanted to play.
In the Mid 90’s Kirk met Al Blake, frontman of the Hollywood Fats Band who became a mentor to the young guitarist. Blake introduced him to wide variety of blues music,“Al hipped me to blues artists as diverse as The Mississippi Sheiks to Tommy Johnson...we’re talkin’ pre Robert Johnson stuff...that’s how far back we went..!” and it was through Blake he also met and bonded with guitarist Junior Watson, “Junior and I would get together smoke cigars, drink tequila and talk guitars...”

Around this time Kirk met and sat in with harmonica legend Lynwood Slim, “I’m grateful to Slim for giving me a stage to play on...” and it was then that Kirk released his first solo effort “I’m Here & I’m Gone” for the JSP Label. “It gave me a chance to pay tribute to my influences and to establish my solo career”. Kirk’s reputation was growing amongst harp players around town, and through an introduction, again, by Al Blake, Kirk sat in with Kim Wilson, and about a year later, got a call to join Kim Wilson’s Blues Review. “I played on and off with Kim for over 2 years....when he wasn’t working with the T-birds”, with the results being the Grammy nominated album“Smoking Joint” .

In 2003 Kirk recorded his second album “Shades of Blue” and it brought him even greater attention in the blues community,“Charlie Musselwhite found out about me through blues musician Doug MacLeod......,Charlie needed a guitar player and called me”, this gig was special for Kirk, “He gave me the freedom to find my voice on the guitar”. He spent three years touring with Charlie and feels that this is where he developed his unique style.

A year later, after another call from Kim, he joined The Fabulous Thunderbirds, where he contributed to and recorded on their “Painted On” album. “I made lifelong friends in Nick, Ronnie, Jimi, Steve and Gene”. In 2007 he gave notice in order pursue his solo career, and this is when he met up with legendary guitarist and producer Michael Landau. “ We first played together at the Baked Potato in L.A., quickly became friends and really connected musically”.

In recent years Kirk has been performing all over Europe as a headliner and occasionally touring in the U.S. with Doyle Bramhall and Michelle Branch. When home, he gives open counseling at Hollywood’s Guitar Institute of Technology. Currently he’s ready to release his third solo album, “My Turn”.
