I just received the newest release (February 3, 2015), Big Dark Love, by Murder By Death. This is not a blues release but adventurous and well written. Opening with I Shot An Arrow, Adam Turla on lead vocal, Matt Armstrong on bass, Sarah Balliet on cello, Dagan Thogerson on drums and David Fountain on piano set quite a stage. A cool but odd melody with Frank Black like characteristics features a solid anchor in Balliet and Fountain that is quite appealing. Strange Eyes has a driving pop beat and atmospheric backing. Title track, Big Dark Love is a really nice ballad with a haunting guitar riffs over a really solid melody and warm cello bottom. Very cool! Dream In Red has more of a club feel but with dark classical overtones. Solitary One has some of the nicest vocal harmonies with Fountain. The most air friendly track on the release, this is a track that is certain to collect followers. Send Me Home is a solid rocker with cool guitar reverb. A pinch of country gives the track a cool flavor. Last Thing, although floating a bed of synth, has banjo, violin and a country western beat. This has a modern feel not unlike another of my favorites bands in this genre, Camper Van Beethoven. Natural Pearl continues with the western flavor but this time with a light 2 step rhythm. A drum shuffle leads the way and vocal duets between Foutain and Turla with the latter adding some solid guitar riffs. Very cool track. It Will Never Die sets an easy folk track with a light poppy feel, balancing cello with mandolin. Breaking into one of the heaviest jams on the release with a wall of sound it is definitely on the the releases milestones. Wrapping the release is Hunted, seems quite a simple folk track until Turla steps up with his fat reverb filled western style guitar riffs. This is a cool track to complete an unusual and interesting release.

A.V. CLUB VIDEO PREMIERE: Ha Ha Tonka - "Lessons"
HA HA TONKA
NEW MUSIC VIDEO: "LESSONS"
FROM HA HA TONKA'S NEWEST BLOODSHOT ALBUM LESSONS
---
Season's greetings!!
After a highly successful year of touring the world and continuing to turn heads with their acclaimed and fully realized album Lessons, Ha Ha Tonka shares the brilliantly stark new music video for the album title track via a premiere on The A.V. Club.
Directed by Brook Linder, who has directed videos for Someone Still
Loves You Boris Yeltsin, A Place to Bury Strangers, and more, the video
presents the band in an emotionally charged and visually stimulating
performance setting, matching the somber but profound tone of the song.
"A muted black and white clip full of silhouettes and vacant stares, the clip for “Lessons” is both soothing and jarring—just like Ha Ha Tonka’s tunes." - The A.V. Club
Ha
Ha Tonka just finished up a year packed with months and months of
touring globally with a final U.S. stint with founding drummer Lennon
Bone. Bone's finale at Subterranean in Chicago was a fittingly
celebratory career-spanning set in front of a packed house. The band is
meanwhile beginning preliminary work on a new album.

Murder By Death Debuts New Song "Strange Eyes"
(download

*Exclusive stream via Entertainment Weekly
of lead single from forthcoming album Big Dark Love
*iTunes album pre-order / New tour
dates
+
Murder By
Death will
release their seventh full-length album Big Dark Love on February 3rd,
2015. Today, Entertainment Weekly/EW.com is premiering “Strange Eyes,” the first
new song from the band’s second release with Chicago label Bloodshot Records.
Big Dark
Love is now
available for pre-order on CD and
LP via Bloodshot’s website or digitally via
iTunes, in which purchasing parties will receive an instant MP3 download of
the lead single, “Strange Eyes.”
Big Dark
Love reflects
a different, more complex side of the band. As hinted in the title, the 10 songs
circle a central theme of love, only in this case, the oft-traveled topic is
examined through a non-traditional kaleidoscope: the love of a parent for their
child, the struggle between unconditional love and morality, loving to excess.
There can sometimes be a dusky patina of despair overlaying glints of hope. For
a band that has built its formidable, near 15-year career around a consideration
to tension, release, bombast, ecstasy, and highest-highs vs. lowest-lows, it is
something to say that this is Murder By Death’s most dynamic release to
date. Sonically here, their signature sound – rootsy indie rock, cinematic
gothic ballads, and rousing pub rock shout-alongs – mixes with enlivening new
stylistic elements - touches of pop, synth-y electronics, and psych rock - only
hinted at on previous albums.
In support
of the new album, Murder By Death will embark on a U.S. tour in late January,
the first time fans will be able to hear new material in full. The lengthy
stretch of dates begins on the West Coast in Seattle on January 30, continues
across the continental U.S. to the East Coast in February, and eventually
doubles back and wraps up in Bloomington, IN in mid-March. The band will also
tour through the Midwest in late May. All tour dates can be found listed below,

Born, Raised & LIVE From
Flint pulls favorites from the band’s two albums, including their
self-titled Bloodshot debut from 2010 (https://www.bloodshotrecords.com/album/whitey-morgan-and-78s),

live music, dancing, and plenty of whiskey swilling from the band’s home-turf
venue, The Machine Shop in Flint, MI. The set includes covers of Johnny
Paycheck’s “Cocaine Train,” Johnny Cash’s “Bad News,” and Bruce Springsteen’s
“I’m On Fire.”

Bjorklund is a pedal steel
guitarist/singer/composer from Copenhagen, Denmark. She has made a name for
herself as an exceptional and stylistically unique musician, combining the
tastes and techniques a wide variety of music - country, indie rock, film
scores, psychedelia, pop - into a seamless blend of roots music. Over the
years she has landed coveted touring gigs with Jack White (and performed on his
latest Lazaretto), X’s John Doe and Exene Cervenka, and Howe Gelb and
recruited big names for her debut release Coming Home in 2011: Mark
Lanegan, Calexico’s Joey Burns and John Convertino, John Auer (the Posies), to
name a few.
Shaken puts Bjorklund together
with another A-plus band, consisting of drummer Convertino, Barb Hunter on
cello, Jim Barr (Portishead) on upright bass, John Parish (noted for his work as
a singer/songwriter/producer with PJ Harvey, Sparklehorse) on guitars/electric
bass and production, and a featured guest vocal appearance by Kurt Wagner
(Lambchop).
The album
was written while Bjorklund was recently tending to her mother in the hospital,
just before she passed away. Shaken is full of potent memories and
emotional outpouring, as translated into the warm but dark sonic textures. Much
of the music here - whether instrumental or with vocals - flows like lucid
dreams, with the listener visualizing the scenery via detailed aural talisman
(e.g. the surreal warped music box feel in “The Road To Samarkand”) and
sepia-tinged picturesque tchotchkes (in “Walking” Maggie delicately sings, “ice
in a glass/ and I held it to cool the palm of my hand” or “stones in the road/
worn-out boots and street signs for shows”). At the sound’s core are the subtly
dominant and defining touches of Bjorklund’s pedal steel melody lines, best
heard in the distorted ghostly swells of “Bottom of the Well” and the breathy
waves of “The Unlucky.”
SPIN Magazine announced the
album release and launched the video and track for “Missing At Sea”: http://www.spin.com/articles/maggie-bjorklund-shaken-missing-at-sea-stream-jack-white/
