Maremil artist: Alex Lopez - Yours Truly, Me - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Yours Truly, Me, from Alex Lopez and it's a smooth and polished radio blues rocker. Opening with Woe Is Me, a pop rocker featuring Lopez's on lead vocal, backed by Kenny Hoye on keys, Steve Roberts on bass and David Nunez on drums with some particularly nice light jazz runs on guitar. I'm A Working Man shows cool guitar form over a somewhat funky drum and bass bottom. Blues ballad, I Love You Blues (Redux) has a sweet melody and melodic guitar soloing, backed by solid organ and piano work byKenny Hoye and with Steve Pagano on bass and Michael Maxim on drums.  Sinful is a cool bluesy ballad with some of Lopez's best vocals on the release. His guitar playing has great style and adventure. Very nice. Wrapping the release is Cheating Blues (redux) with it's rock n roll styling. Pagano's bass work and the tight drums riffs of Maxin give solid bottom to Hoye for his organ solo.

Dudley Taft - Simple Life - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Simple Life, from Dudley Taft and it's a solid blues rocker with a modern rock edge. Opening with Give Me A Song, a strong radio style track with a catchy melody and a solid beat, Taft's vocals are solid and his guitar lead straight on. Backed by Kasey Williams on bass, and Chris Ellison on drums, a strong opener. With a more aggressive edge, In Your Way has a strong bottom via Walfredo Reyes Jr on drums and Taft's rhythm guitar. His lead work is clean and tight. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Bombs Away with it's bright rock feel and Taft's electrifying guitar lead. Warren Haynes' If Heartaches Were Nickels gives Taft the perfect venue to show his blues chops. With an extended lead guitar solo he grinds deep in the fretboard and soars over the rhythm of John Kessler on bass and Reyes Jr. on drums. Very nice. Wrapping the release is driving rocker, Back To You with Mike Tapogna riding high on drums and Taft harmonizing nicely over his rough and ready guitar style. Solid closer.

Cherry Bomb Records artist: Seth James - Good Life - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Good Life, from Seth James and it's quite good. Not since the early inception of Little Feat have I heard anything quite this strong in this vein. Opening with Brother, a funky, swampy blues number, James on lead vocal and guitar has heavy backing by Bob Britt and his sweet Lowell George like slide style, Kevin McKendree on keys, Lynn Williams on drums and excellent backing vocals by Windy Moten. A solid compliment of horn work by Jim Hoke on sax, Roy Agee on trombone and Vinnie Ciesielski on trumpet. Excellent opener. Continuing is that funky blues vein, title track, Good Life, has a strong woven instrumental feel with thick slide work by Britt. James' vocals are solid and tuneful Very cool. Yates McKendree steps up with a real nice guitar solo and some of James' best vocals on the release on easy R&B ballad, From Way Behind.  Radio track, I'm Coming Home is dripping with soul with excellent lead vocals by James and backing by Moten. Very very nice. Funky rocker, Medicine Man has a super gritty guitar lead and tight rhythm with cool vocal work by James and Kevin McKendree. Greasy! Wrapping the release is acoustic blues number, I Am The Storm, featuring James alone on guitar and vocal. Very blues rootsy and with strong vocals, James closes out an exceptional set. Extremely nice!Oh...and the cd cover is excellent too!

Earwig Music Company artist: Les Copeland - One More Foot In The Quicksand - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, One More Foot In The Quicksand, from Les Copeland and it's honest. Opening with blues rocker, Change Of Pace, Les Copeland sets up on lead vocal and guitar, backed by Cameron Ward on bass and Scott Grant on drums. On Big Bill Broonzy's When I Been Drinking, Copeland goes it alone with electric guitar. This is a particularly cool tract with solid vocals and excellent country blues style guitar accompaniment. Very cool. Freddie King's Woman Across The River gets a real funky edge. The base arrangement remains intact but Copeland's added funk gives it a really fresh feel. Copeland lays in some real nice riffs and Ward's bass lines are excellent. Another cool, country style blues track, Perfect Man Like You, blends solid vocals by Copeland, backed by flat picking and slide guitar overlays. Very nice. Slow blues number, Uncle To Aunt, gives Copeland a real nice opportunity to just stretch and show his blues chops. With only the minimal of bass and drum backing, Copeland shines. Tiny People is a real cool tune with a great melody. Featuring Copeland on lead slide (melody), this is certainly one of my favorite tracks on the release. Ray Charles' Hallelujah I Love Her So gets a savvy swing alternating Copeland vocals with cool jazzy guitar soloing. Very nice.  Another nice country blues rag is I'd Be Nothing with straight up Piedmont picking and tight vocal delivery. Title track, Just Another Foot In The Quicksand, adds a jazzy approach to a traditional country style blues. With some real nice articulation and bluesy accents, a real nice job. Closing the release is I Gotta Get Up, a jazzy R&B style track with a lot of commercial potential. This release has a number of approaches to the blues with a constant theme in acoustic style blues guitar. Take a listen.

Misty Blues - Pickled & Aged - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Pickled & Aged, from Misty Blues, and it's a blend pf many flavors of blues. Opening with rag time, Split Whiskey, lead vocalist Gina Coleman has strong backing by Jason Webster on banjo, Bill Patriquin on trumpet, Benny Kohn on keys, Rob Tatten on tuba, Aaron Dean on sax and Diego Monque on drums. Great opener. Rolling into funky, Our Travelling Blues, Tatten really spices up the bottom with a great funky beat and excellent sax work by Dean really give Coleman a great foundation. My favorite track on the release is instrumental, It's A Jungle Out There with a terrific Latin beat and an overall jazz framework. With excellent tom tom work by Tatten and percussion by Coleman, Kohn on piano, Patriquin on trumpet, Dean on sax and Webster on guitar, this is a great ride. Another more aggressive track is Take A Long Ride with it's lumbering beat. Coleman digs in on vocals and Dean really screams on sax. Kohn's key solo is clean and well developed and Webster's guitar work driven. Excellent track. Wrapping the release is Stoop Stomp, an up tempo blues with firm support from Dean and a wound down solo by Webster. Even Patriquin gets a nice opening for a bass solo on this one. Cool closer for a real nice release.

EllerSoul Records artist: Jason Ricci & The Bad Kind - My Chops Are Rolling! - New release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, My Chops Are Rolling! from Jason Ricci and The Bad Kind and it's really great! I really like Ricci's work and every time I get the chance to review one of his releases I remember why I do this. There is always something great coming around the bend! Opening with Break In The Rain, a drum heavy rocker with cool slide work and easy vocals Ricci is off to a super start his fluid harmonica styling...uniquely his. Backed by John Lisi on guitar and vocal, Andy Kurz on vocal and bass, John Perkins on drums and Kaitlin Dibble on vocal, the band is hot. On Don't Badger The Witness, Ricci's vocals are haunting and Lisi's guitar work outrageous. Excellent! F_ck The Falcons (Who Dat Nation) is presented in two forms on this release and this is the non edited version. I bit blunt maybe but in good spirit and in New Orleans style...this track is terrific! On Barbara Lynn's classic, If You Should Lose Me, Dibble is up front with terrific vocals and with rich guitar work and healthy harmonica by Ricci, this is the standout radio track. Very nice! Title track, My Chops Are Rolling is a cool, jam... James Brown, funky, boogaloo style. With a heavy bass line by Kurz and with a tight bottom courtesy of Perkins, Lisi and Ricci tear it up. Excellent! Funky foot stomper, Snow Flakes And Horses is hot and heavy with a George Clinton meets Frank Zappa feel... Wow!  Settling down into the blues, old style, Lisi lays down some gripping guitar lead on The Way I Hurt Myself. Ricci's vocals on this track scream pain and I am a believer. Nothing like feeling real blues in a contemporary world. His harp filler behind his vocal is perfect and Lisi's guitar support couldn't be better (think Big Brother's Ball and Chain). This is as perfect a setting I can think of for Ricci to reach inside and pull out the blues and he is reaching. Terrific! Closing the release is the edit version of Who Dat Nation and the rhythm is absolutely terrific. This is an excellent closer for one of best I've heard in a long time.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Gracie Curran - Come Undone - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Come Undone, from Gracie Curran and it's meaty. Opening with title track, Come Undone, Gracie Curran is back with her newest release and a lot of soul. This is old school styling with Damon Fowler on guitar, Matt Walker on guitar and bass, Justin Headley on drums, Pat Harrington on drums, Victor Wainwright on keys, Doug Woolverton on trumpet and Mark Earley on sax really delivers the goods. Curran's vocal phrasing and style, with a touch of reggae is just right for an excellent opener! High energy swing track, Stay Up!, shows Curran is not only happy digging in deep but very light on her feet. Fowler's fleet fingered guitar work is nicely backed by Jeremy Powell on keys and New Orleans style horn work by Woolverton and Earley give this track extra zip. On shuffle track, Sweet Sativa, Fowler pulls out the slide giving the track a down home feel and playing off backing vocals, Curran has this track right where she wants it. Very nice. If Mama Ain't Happy is a snappy piano boogie with a great bass line by Walker and featuring Wainwright on piano and great vocals by Curran. Excellent! Wrapping the release is easy paced country blues rocker, Chasing Sunset with understated slide work and Curran's powerful vocal right up front. This track has a strong melody with subdued but tight instrumental backing. Very nice closer for a solid release.

Cleopatra Records artist: Arthur Adams - Here To Make You Feel Good - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Here To Make You Feel Good, from Arthur Adams and it's solid gold. Opening with Tear the House Down, a funky track with a definite dance feel, features Adams on lead guitar and vocal, backed by Ronnie Laws on sax, David Leach on percussion, Reggie McBride on bass, Hense Powell on keys, and James Gadson on drums.  Smooth, Latin influenced R&B style track, Pretty Lady has a real nice melody and with Freddie Washington on bass. Adams gets his guitar "singing" with Santana like flair over the strong percussion of Gadson. Very nice. Adams puts in a particularly strong vocal effort on radio track, Forgive Me. The addition of Lee Thornberg and Lester Lovett on trumpet, as well as Bill Bergman on sax gives the track an overall warmer feel and Adams' jazzy guitar lead shines. My personal favorite on the release is excellent blues number, By Myself, with BB King styling. Adams is strong vocally and on guitar with Thornberg, Lovett and Bergman on horns making it feel like a fresh new friend. Very nice. Wrapping the release is a cool instrumental shuffle, Little Dab'll Do Ya, featuring Adams jamming over the heat with Gadson, Powell and Washington. Solid closer for a fun release.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Ben Levin - Before Me - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Before Me, by Ben Levin and it's really cool. Opening with Big Bill Broonzy's I Feel So Good, Ben Levin shows how it should be done as a leader on piano and lead vocals. With perfect dynamics and a great team featuring strong lead guitar work by Bon Margolin, and Bob Corritore on harmonica, this track is tight. Backing this star front line is Aron Levin on guitar, Chris Douglas on bass and Oscar Bonal on drums. Super opener. On Freddie King's instrumental, This Morning, Margolin and Corritore lay down really nice solos complimenting Levin's own solo and the tight drum work by Bernal. Excellent! On Confessin' The Blues, Levin shows some of his best vocals on the release. His style is crisp and his style is smooth. Corritore just lays back in the seat on his solo and his tone is excellent. Margolin's guitar solo is smooth and has great feel. Title track, Before Me has really nice New Orleans style blues lines and again super vocals over a Fats Domino kind of feel. Aron Levin's guitar touch on this track is particularly fine. One of my favorite tracks on the release is slow blues, So Soon, giving Ben a great opportunity to really dig in on piano. His vocals are really nice with real style. Excellent! James Cotton's Lightnin' is up next with Corritore taking the lead. His tone and feel are perfect and get Margolin revved up to one of his loosest and most enjoyable solos on the release. Ben finishes it off in concert with Corritore and Margolin. Very nice. Wrapping the release is an instrumental jam, Open Late, cooked up by Levin, Corritore and Margolin. Levin's piano style is so thick in blues you have a hard time believing that he isn't from 40's or 50's Chicago. Setting the framework for Margolin and Corritore, this is a real nice smoky closer for a solid release.

Arsen Shomakhov - Rain City Blues - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release Rain City Blues by Arsen Shomakhov and I really like it. Opening with a real nice blues track, Full-Time Lover with a strong swagger, Arsen Shomakhov sets the pace with his strong vocal and guitar work. With Kid Andersen on bass, Alexander Pettersen on drums and featuring Aki Kumar on harmonica, this is a super opener. Charged up, No More! is a great rock n' roller with Andersen on piano and harmony vocals. Excellent! Taken down a notch, Women and Whiskey has a great feel. With a loping rhythm, stylish guitar and solid B3 playing by Andersen, it's one of my top choices. Instrumental guitar shuffle is really slick with a thorough workout on guitar with tight rhythm by Pettersen. Boogaloo! is another favorite with funky bass and key work by Andersen. Get ready to dance! New Orleans flavored Sitting On A Fence is a cool jazzy track with nicely blended vocals and snappy drum work by June Core. Shomakhov's vocals are real cool and his guitar playing crisp. Very nice. Wrapping the release is a country flavored instrumental, Hello Little Bird with Shomakhov alternating between picking and slide with a droning note. It has a really cool sound and is a great closer.

Hot Shot Records artist: Delbert McClinton and Self-Made Men + Dana - Tall, Dark & Handsome - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release. Tall, Dark & Handsome from Delbert McClinton and Self-Made Men + Dana and it's pretty interesting. Opening with foot stompin shuffle, Mr. Smith McClinton really has a groove going. With great sax work by Jim Hoke and trumpet by Dana Robbins, this track is hot. Backing vocals by Vicki Hampton, Wendy Moten and Robert Bailey and a super band including Joe Maher on drums, Glenn Worf on bass, Bob Britt on guitar, Kevin McKendree on piano and B3, Jim Hoke on bari and tenor sax, and Quentin Ware on trumpet, Dana Robbins on tenor sax and Roy Agee on trombone, this band is super. On light swing track, No Chicken On The Bone, McClinton's vocals are well primed and Stuart Duncan shines on violin. Again excellent backing vocals by Hampton, Moten and Bailey enrich the track and Britt on acoustic guitar and mandolin nicely compliment McKendree's piano work. Very nice. With a jazzy undertow, Lulu has a loose, small club feel. A real nice solo by Britt punctuates this track with it's overall swing. Loudmouth is a cool, BB King like blues shuffle. Yates McKendree, Britt and Kevin McKendree lay down some tasty guitar riffs and Kevin's piano work is strong. New Orleans flavored, A Fool Like Me, has rich gumbo, with great stumble drumming by Maher and piano by McKendree. Delaney McClinton vocal paring with Delbert is really fine and the addition of Hoke on clarinet and Bari sax, Ware on trumpet, and Agee on trombone makes this track one of my favorites. Temporarily Insane is another favorite on the track with stripped down backing on McClinton's stark vocals sounding mostly like acoustic guitar but including Mellotron, drums and bass. Excellent! Wrapping the release is A Poem, a quirky track with rugged vocals by McClinton over minimal guitar by Britt and piano by McKendree. Strong closer.

Legendary Canadian Guitarist & Songwriter Myles Goodwyn of April Wine Cooks Up a Heady Blues Brew on "Friends Of The Blues 2" Album Coming October 25th

Legendary Canadian Guitarist & Songwriter Myles Goodwyn of April Wine Cooks Up a Heady Blues Brew on Friends Of The Blues 2 Album Coming October 25th

The Follow-up to JUNO Nominated Myles Goodwyn and Friends Of The Blues Due from Linus Entertainment

Listen and share "Hip Hip" from the album, plus pre-order here: https://smarturl.it/friendsoftheblues2

Waterdown, ON — Legendary Canadian guitarist, bandleader and songwriter Myles Goodwyn, of multi-selling platinum rock band April Wine, is returning to his first love – the blues – with the second recording of Myles Goodwyn and Friends Of The Blues, the follow-up to his JUNO- nominated (Canada’s Grammy) and East Coast Music Award winning blues debut.

Set for release on October 25th via Linus Entertainment, Friends Of The Blues 2 has 13 original songs written by Goodwyn and a cover of “All Over Now” by Bobby Womack. As with the first Friends Of The Blues album, the new disc features a supporting cast of the “who’s who” on the Canadian blues music scene, including Jack de Keyzer, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne, Warren Robert, Ross Billard, Bruce Dixon, JR Smith, Matt Andersen, Mike "Shrimp Daddy" Reid, Jack Semple, Sherman "Tank" Doucette, Joe Murphy, Bill Stevenson, Will Van Hansolo, Steve Segal and more. A real feature on it is a stunning duet with six-time winner of Female Vocalist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards, Angel Forrest.

Myles Goodwyn, singer, guitarist, writer, producer and leader of April Wine, has shaped and directed the group from its earliest beginnings. April Wine has sold over 20 million recordings worldwide.

Goodwyn grew up poor and is the classic “small-town kid makes good” success story. As a young teenager, Goodwyn honed his skills playing in cover bands and began writing original material as soon as he could play the guitar.  One of April Wine`s biggest hits, “You Won't Dance With Me,” was written when he was a teenager.

Myles Goodwyn’s voice is as distinctive and immediately recognizable as his songwriting skills are prolific. Myles and the other members of April Wine were inducted into the Canadian Music
Hall Of Fame in 2010.  Goodwyn received the prestigious East Coast Music Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 and the SOCAN National Achievement Award in 2002. In 2016 he released his memoir, Just Between You and Me, which became an instant seller on the Globe and Mail`s Non-Fiction List. His second book, Elvis and Tiger – this time fiction - was published in 2018 and was well received.

The Myles Goodwyn and Friends Of The Blues recording earned him international acclaim and a Juno nomination for Blues Recording of the Year 2019. The recording won the East Coast Music Award for Blues Recording of the Year in 2019.

Not a bad start to a blues career and his first blues recording effort at age 70 or at any age!

Goodwyn was committed to making his follow up recording, Myles Goodwyn and Friends Of The Blues 2, using the same logic as his blues debut release; “I wanted to write some good blues tunes and sing these tunes as best that I could. I really appreciate great blues material because it is timeless, it is vital and it’s passionate, even heartbreakingly so,” says Goodwyn. His decision to use only “real blues players” was again, deliberate; “I wanted the real deal when it came to the performances."

The result of these collaborations is testament to the care that went into Myles Goodwyn and Friends Of The Blues 2 and will surely show, yet again, that Myles Goodwyn is not only a gifted blues singer/songwriter and musician, but also a real blues man at heart.

Among the Special Guests for the Roy Buchanan Tribute: Award-winning Blues-rock guitarist Mike Zito, also co-founder of new label Gulf Coast Records, who recently released Price's critically-lauded new album, Dog Eat Dog.

~Billy Price: Some Background And Info. About Dog Eat Dog~

New label Gulf Coast Records releases Dog Eat Dog, the new album from longtime soul-blues vocalist, Billy Price. After the critical acclaim and Blues Music Awards nomination of his last album Reckoning, Price was excited and eager to get back into Greaseland Studio in San Jose, California with Producer, Kid Andersen. Kid and Billy's mutual love for the music and commitment to making an original contribution to the soul- blues genre is evident in this new collection of recordings.

Dog Eat Dog contains twelve songs, eight of which are original compositions. The album opens with "Working On Your Chain Gang," co-written by Price and longtime collaborator, keyboardist Jim Britton. Price and Britton also co-wrote the atmospheric "Lose My Number,"  "All Night long Cafe," and "Toxicity" (with Executive Producer, Guy Hale), while Britton wrote "Walk Back In." Price teamed with another longtime collaborator, French guitarist Fred Chapellier, to write "Remnants," a great new blues song, and the tuneful sweet soul track, "More Than I Needed."  Price worked with Bill Troiani, writer of Reckoning, on another catchy blues tune, "You Gotta Leave." The covers, in addition to "Dog Eat Dog," are Bobby Byrd's "We're In Love," Otis Rush blues classic "My Love Will Never Die," and "Same Old Heartaches," first recorded by The Impressions and written by Price's friends, the songwriting team of Melvin and Mervin Steals, best known for penning "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" by The Spinners. The Otis rush song, a staple in Price's live repertoire, was added after Andersen saw a You Tube video of Price performing the song and suggested recording a new version of it.

Price and Andersen assembled a first-class group of musicians on Dog Eat Dog, featuring Price on vocals, Andersen (guitars and assorted instruments), Alex Pettersen (drums), Jerry Jemmott (bass), Jim Pugh (keys), Eric Spaulding (tenor sax), Jack Sanford (baritone sax), and John Halblieb (trumpet). Andersen added congas to most tracks, covered by Jon Otis (son of the great Johnny Otis) and Vicki Randle (Jay Leno Tonight Show Band, Mavis Staples). Randle also provided background vocals with Lisa Leuschner Andersen, Charlie Owen, and the Sons of the Soul Revivers gospel group. Dog Eat Dog also features guest appearances by Rick Estrin, Alabama Mike, and Mike Zito. Estrin plays harmonica on the title track, which he wrote and recorded on one of his albums. A big fan of Alabama Mike, Price was thrilled to share the lead vocals with Mike on "Dog Eat Dog." Gulf Coast Records co-founder Mike Zito also contributed a scorching guitar solo on "All Night Long Cafe."

2016 Blues Music Awards winner Billy Price first attracted national attention during his three-year association with guitarist, Roy Buchannan. Price is the vocalist on two of Buchannan's albums, That's What I'm Here For and Live Stock. Since then, with the Keystone Rhythm Band, the Billy Price Band, and solo projects, Billy Price has recorded and released a total of seventeen albums, CDs, and DVDs. In April of 2016, Price was officially recognized and inducted as a Pittsburgh Rock 'N' Roll Legend at an awards ceremony. Price's album This Time For Real, with the late Chicago soul singer Otis Clay, received a 2016 Blues music Award in the "Best Soul Blues Album" category. Billy's last recording, Reckoning, released in June 2018, was nominated for a Blues Music Award for Best Soul Blues Album of the Year.

~Billy Price/Dog Eat Dog: What The Media Is Saying~

"Billy Price made his bones with the legendary Roy Buchanan, singing lead on two albums. Since then he has released seventeen albums, either solo or with various bands, and now lands on one of the hottest new labels – Gulf Coast – with his new album. I’ve heard some really good albums this year, in many genres and forms, but this is classic soul, played with an awesome sense of the music and way out there ahead of most. Bloody wonderful." (5 stars out of 5).
                                        MUSIC-NEWS.COM

"There are those who have an incredible voice. There are those who have an ear for great R&B. Then there are those who have a deep soul spirit. Billy Price has all of that and more. Much more. Few can put it all together like he can."
                                     BLUES HIGHWAY US 61

"We are pleased to premiere the song “Working On Your Chain Gang” by the great soul-blues singer Billy Price...a light-hearted and humorous story of love that sure caught our attention with its funky blues groove. Billy Price does it again."
                                    ROCK AND BLUES MUSE

"They have carved out a niche for great soulful music, sweet harmonies, and music that can make you dance or break your heart. Dog Eat Dog is a fantastic album and one that will easily be on my Best of 2019 list at the end of the year."
