GUITARIST/SINGER BOY WELLS HEARS BLUES SKIES CALLINGON NEW CD COMING NOVEMBER 22

GUITARIST/SINGER BOY WELLS HEARS BLUES SKIES CALLING
ON NEW CD COMING NOVEMBER 22
MASTERFUL PLAYER’S ALBUM SHOWCASES HIS BLUES, ROCK, COUNTRY AND FUNK ROOTS; INCLUDES BONUS CD-ROM OF LATE ‘70S WELLS GUITAR LESSON WITH THE LEGENDARY DANNY GATTON
WIMBERLEY, TX – Guitarist/singer Boy Wells announces the November 22 release of his debut CD, Blue Skies Calling, featuring a dozen original songs on his own Marcel Marsupial Records. The album will be available at CDBaby, iTunes and other fine outlets.
Blue Skies Calling introduces music fans to a largely undiscovered stellar guitarist and musical master in Boy Wells. Wells is a veteran of the southern rock scene that was rooted in the geographical and multi-stylistic pocket around the nation’s capital, who now resides in the artistically fertile hills of Central Texas. The new CD is a harmonic and sonic - as well as personal and spiritual - journey through the musical tradition at the heart of the American roots idiom that bloomed below the Mason-Dixon Line. With the guitar of Boy Wells as the guide, Blue Skies Calling travels through blues, rock ‘n’ roll, country, bluegrass, jazz and more to reveal a rare and brilliant instrumentalist, songwriter and singer steeped in the musical real deal. A friend and protégé of the late, great guitar legend Danny Gatton, Wells made his bones with countless gigs, many road miles and uncounted hours in the studio, and now steps into the spotlight to share all that he knows and feels about music and life as well as his instrumental prowess, touch and emotive power.
The new album was recorded by Dave Hanbury at House of Jam Recording in Beltsville, Maryland, and features Boy Wells on vocals, lead, slide and acoustic guitar, joined by a cast of stellar musicians, including former Danny Gatton bassist John Prevetti, drummer Bruce Crump (Molly Hatchet) and Rickie Simpkins on violin and mandolin, whose credits include work with Emmylou Harris. Other players include Andy Hamburger on drums, Bill Watson on saxes, Brian Simms on keyboards, Jimi Lee on harmonica, Brad Clements on trumpet and Becky Taylor on banjo.
A special bonus on the Blue Skies Calling CD is the inclusion of a CD-ROM featuring a one-hour guitar lesson given to Wells by Danny Gatton. “I played a 1955 Les Paul of Danny’s for over 20 years,” says Boy Wells. “Danny called me before he died and asked me to put a vocal tape together for his label at the time. He needed a singer after his singer, Billy Windsor, had passed. He remained a friend, a good one all those years. This lesson was in the late ‘70s; it’s me and Danny in the living room of his house on Holly Lane in Indian Head, Maryland. It’s killer stuff.”
The music on Blues Skies Calling covers a wide palette of colors from American music. Whether it’s the New Orleans funk/jazz opener, “Mr. Coluzzi;” the blasting blues of “World Weary and Blue,” “Love In Vain” and “Devil’s Backbone Blues;” the southern rock of “Bring It Back,” “Broke Down,” “Mon Angel” and the title track; the improvisational instrumentals, “Marcel Marsupial” and “Tova;” or the two closing bluegrass/country-flavored tracks, “Tin Winter” and “Traveller,” Boy Wells takes the listener on a beautiful musical journey, accented by his tasteful and masterful guitar work.
The distinctive artwork on the CD is by Texas artist Scott Wade, best-known for his amazing “dirty car art,” which has earned him a place in Ripley’s Believe It or Not
(www.dirtycarart.com). And by the way, that’s Boy Wells’ hand on the cover, the product of a broken pinky earned while playing baseball as a kid. “When I started playing guitar, it was a great asset because of how it jutted out. It was naturally set for guitar playing,” says Wells.
Boy Wells started playing guitar at the age of 16 when he heard a Duane Allman solo on The Allman Brothers Band classic, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” “Before that, I never even considered playing guitar,” he remembers. “I was stunned by the guitar; it seemed to ‘speak’ on a spiritual level to me. I've been playing ever since that day.
“I grew up in the same area Danny Gatton was from in southern Maryland. I met Danny when I was around 17 after a friend of his heard me cranking an amp outside one day and introduced me to Gatton. He became a mentor to me and gave me many lessons, advice, rides in old cars, guitar repair gigs, old car parts etc. - you name it.”
Boy Wells started playing professionally in the Washington, DC, area in the late ‘70s, working the country bars on U.S. Route 1 in Virginia and Maryland. He hit a few early high notes opening for the likes of Maybelle Carter, the Osborne Brothers and Billy Joe Shaver. Moving into more blues and southern rock into the early 80s, Wells started a band called Blue Southern and played DC clubs like Danny Gatton’s Beneath It All, The Crazy Horse and Desperadoes, when the country rock and southern blues scene was vibrant in the DC area and outward. For several years during that time, he played at the annual 4th of July big celebration shows on the Washington Monument grounds, opening for artists such as The Beach Boys, The Ventures and others.
During the mid to late ‘80s, he played in a modern rock band and after that, in the early ‘90s, Wells played in an Allman Brothers tribute band - Southern Legend - with former Molly Hatchet drummer Bruce Crump, while also playing in several other blues bands throughout Virginia and the South.
After tragedy struck his family and he lost both his son and daughter, Boy Wells moved to a town outside of Austin in 2006 and started playing the clubs in Austin and that entire region of Texas. After a bout with Meniere’s Disease (a debilitating disorder of the inner ear that can affect hearing and balance), which laid him up for literally a couple of years, Boy Wells got back into writing and recording, which became the genesis for the release of Blue Skies Calling.

Red House - Jimi Hendrix

James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American guitarist and singer-songwriter. He is widely considered to be the greatest guitarist in musical history, and one of the most influential musicians of his era across a range of genres.

After initial success in Europe with his group The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he achieved fame in the United States following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. He often favored raw overdriven amplifiers with high gain and treble and helped develop the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback.

Hendrix, as well as his friend Eric Clapton, popularized use of the wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock which he often used to deliver an exaggerated sense of pitch in his solos, particularly with high bends, complex guitar playing, and use of legato. As a record producer, Hendrix also broke new ground in using the recording studio as an extension of his musical ideas. He was one of the first to experiment with stereophonic phasing effects for rock recording.[citation needed]

Hendrix was influenced by blues artists such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King and Elmore James, rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield and Steve Cropper, and the jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. Hendrix (who was then known as 'Maurice James') began dressing and wearing a moustache like Little Richard when he performed and recorded in his band from March 1, 1964 through to the spring of 1965. In 1966, Hendrix stated, "I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice".

Hendrix won many of the most prestigious rock music awards in his lifetime, and has been posthumously awarded many more, including being inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. An English Heritage blue plaque was erected in his name on his former residence at Brook Street, London, in September 1997. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (at 6627 Hollywood Blvd.) was dedicated in 1994. In 2006, his debut US album, Are You Experienced, was inducted into the United States National Recording Registry, and Rolling Stone named Hendrix the top guitarist on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all-time in 2003

Today Marks 20 Years Since Bill Graham's Passing Today Marks 20 Years Since Bill Graham's Passing
Steve Jobs was to the computer industry what Bill Graham was to the concert business. Both were abrasive, unapologetically brilliant visionaries that rewrote the rules of their businesses. The doors of perception for both were shaped by 60's idealism while the roads they drove to success were paved with streamline capitalism. A half million people paid homage to Graham at a wake after his death, as those grieving Jobs laid apples at the gates of his empire these past weeks. We honor one with a look at the posters for Fillmore shows, as we say thanks to both.

A week after Bill Graham's untimely death in 1991, the Bill Graham Presents staff organized a free concert in Golden Gate Park featuring the Grateful Dead, CSN&Y, Santana, Journey, Jackson Browne, Joe Satriani and many other musicians and special guests; this playlist presents the entire day's worth of music. The gathering marked the end of an era, but a concert in the heart of where it all started was a truly fitting memorial: a celebration of Graham's life, filled with Laughter, Love and Music.

Chicken Raid - Mr Frank Edwards

Frank Edwards left home at 14 and played guitar and harmonica alongside Tampa Red. As World War II approached, Edwards joined seminal Mississippi bluesman Tommy McClennan and headed North, recording eight sides for OKeh in 1941 with Washboard Sam. After being discharged from the army he cut two songs for Regal in 1949, after which he continued playing on the street corners, juke joints and restaurants, before hitting the festival circuit during the folk revival. Thanks to Pete Lowry, Edwards released his first full album “Done Some Travelin’” in 1972 through Trix. When not onstage, the iconic Edwards, or “Mr. Frank” as he was commonly known, was a familiar face at the clubs, supporting other blues musicians in Atlanta. He joined the roster of Music Maker artists in the 1990’s, performing festivals once again before quietly passing away on his return home from a recording session in North Carolina for the Music Maker label on March 22, 2002.

I know you want to know what he's singing so here you go:

If the preacher was coming around, catch a bus and leave town.
He'll eat you out of house and home
He'll eat you out of house and home
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone
Glad when the reverend go home.

I looked around and I thought he was through, looked around he getting a thigh or two
He'll eat you out of house and home
He'll eat you out of house and home
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone
Glad when the reverend go home.

I looked around and I thought he was through, looked around for a neck to chew
He'll eat you out of house and home
He'll eat you out of house and home
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone
Glad when the reverend go home.

I looked around and I thought he was through, looked around for a back to chew
He'll eat you out of house and home
He'll eat you out of house and home
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone
Glad when the reverend go home.

I looked around and I thought he was through, looked around for a wing to chew
He'll eat you out of house and home
He'll eat you out of house and home
Pluck chicken and leave you the bone

Glad when the reverend go home.

As the Years Go Passing By - Jimmy Johnson Blues Band

Jimmy Johnson (born James Earl Thompson, November 25, 1928, Holly Springs, Mississippi) is an American blues guitarist and singer.
Several of Johnson's brothers had careers in music; among them are soul musician Syl Johnson and Magic Sam bassist Mack Thompson. In his younger years he played piano and sang in gospel groups. He and his family moved to Chicago in 1950, where he worked as a welder and played guitar in his spare time. He began playing professionally with Slim Willis in 1959, changing his last name to Johnson like his brother Syl. As a guitarist he was influenced by both Buddy Guy and Otis Rush and he played with Freddy King, Albert King, Magic Sam and Eddy Clearwater among others.

In the 1960s he played more R&B music, working with Otis Clay, Denise LaSalle, and Garland Green. He also had his own group from the early sixties, and by the late sixties he had released his first single. By 1974 he had returned to blues playing, working with Jimmy Dawkins and touring Japan with Otis Rush in 1975.

His first solo material appeared on Alligator Records and Delmark Records in 1978-79, when he was fifty years old. He was an award-winner at the first W.C. Handy Blues Music Awards held in Memphis November 16. 1980. His career continued to pick up until December 2, 1988, when his touring van crashed in Indiana, killing his keyboardist St. James Bryant and bassist Larry Exum. Johnson was injured and took an extended hiatus from the music industry, but returned to record for Verve Records in 1994. In 2002 he recorded with his brother, Syl. He remained active and among other things toured Europe in 2009, playing both England as well as Copenhagen Blues festival in Denmark.

In addition to pioneering Dr. Feelgood's distinctive mid-seventies, pre-punk British R&B sound, in 1980 Wilko played guitar for Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Wilko's current live band features Blockheads' Norman Watt-Roy (bass guitar), and Dylan Howe (drums).

In 2009 Johnson featured in Julien Temple's Oil City Confidential; a fascinating full-length feature film documentary about Dr. Feelgood. The film received many accolades including the MOJO Vision Award at the MOJO Honours List 2010.

Dr. Feelgood originally formed in 1971 as a British pub rock band who hailed from Canvey Island, Essex. Their name derived from a slang term for heroin or for a doctor who was willing to overprescribe drugs. It is also a reference to a 1962 record by the American blues pianist and singer Willie Perryman (also known as "Piano Red") called "Dr Feel-Good", which Perryman originally recorded under the name of Dr Feelgood & The Interns.
Dr. Feelgood's distinctive British R&B sound was centered on Wilko Johnson's choppy guitar style. The original band line-up also included singer Lee Brilleaux, and the rhythm section of John B. Sparks (aka "Sparko") on bass guitar and John Martin (aka "The Big Figure") on drums.

Dr. Feelgood was known primarily for their high energy live performances, although studio albums like Down by the Jetty (1974) and Malpractice (1975) were also incredibly popular. Their 1976 breakthrough live album, Stupidity reached No.1 in the Official UK Album Chart. When the band released their fourth album, Sneakin' Suspicion (1977), Johnson departed to pursue a solo career.

WILKO JOHNSON - BIOGRAPHY

click for hi resWhen rock'n'roll was shaken from its pre-punk complacency by the emergence of Dr. Feelgood, it was their guitarist Wilko Johnson who excited most attention – not only for the startling violence of his stage performance (which was to inspire countless imitators and become one of the classic images of rock'n'roll) but also for his guitar style which combined the roles of lead and rhythm guitar in driving riffs and a stuttering machine gun frenzy which altered conceptions of 'guitar heroics'.

As a songwriter, from early Feelgood favourites like 'Back in the Night' to the power and poetry of 'Dr. Dupree' and 'Sneaking Suspicion' he has proved himself one of the best and most original exponents of R&B styles this side of the Atlantic.

The list of '70s New Wave bands who acknowledge the influence of Wilko and the Feelgoods is extensive and includes The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Boomtown Rats, and across the Atlantic The Ramones and Blondie (who spent a whole night at a New York party wearing out their specially imported copy of the Feelgood's first album, 'Down by the Jetty').

After his departure from Dr. Feelgood in 1977 Wilko formed his own band, and over the next few years worked with several personnel of varying degrees of musical accomplishment and mixed moral character. In 1980, while continuing to work with his own 3-piece, Wilko entered the ranks of Ian Dury's brilliant Blockheads, co-writing writing several songs with Ian and featuring on the 'Laughter' album. Then in 1985 the Blockhead's sensational and much loved bassist Norman Watt-Roy joined Wilko and for the last twenty-five years they have startled and blasted audiences from Helsinki to Madrid, Aberdeen to Istanbul, Toulouse to Tokyo.

Now with the revered Dylan Howe (another former Blockhead) on drums the band has reached an even greater level of musical mastery and manic brilliance, generally recognised as Wilko's best band of all time. Rock'n'roll never got more savage than this! In 2008 the highly acclaimed film director Julien Temple set out to make a documentary film about the birth and all too brief phenomenon of Dr. Feelgood. 'Oil City Confidential' was premièred in October 2009 to very great critical acclaim and a series of awards. As the eccentric and enigmatic star of the film Wilko has attracted attention in some unexpected places; he has recently been filming alongside Sean Bean as Royal Executioner Ser Illyn Payne in HBO's fantasy series Game of Thrones, due for release in spring 2011.

Born January 28, 1933 in Bishopville (Lee County), SC, Drink Small (his real name is South Carolina's last great bluesman. His other releases include platters on Ichiban, Southland, Erwin Music, Mapleshade, and of course his own imprint, Bishopville Records. Hello My Lover - Ernie K-Doe

Ernie K-Doe (February 22, 1936 - July 5, 2001), born Ernest Kador, Jr., was an African American rhythm and blues singer best known for his 1961 hit single "Mother-in-Law" which went to #1 on the Billboard pop chart in the U.S.
In the 1980s K-Doe did radio shows on New Orleans community stations WWOZ and WTUL. The shows were known for his explosively energetic announcements and frequent self promotion (occasionally causing problems for the non-commercial station). K-Doe's catch phrases included "Burn, K-Doe, Burn!" "I'm a Charity Hospital Baby!" and (addressed to himself) "You just good, that's all!". For a time he billed himself as "Mister Naugahyde" until he was ordered to desist by the owners of the Naugahyde trademark. K-Doe then explained that it was a misunderstanding; he was actually referring to himself as "Mister M-Nauga-Ma-Hyde", a word he invented himself.

In the 1990s K-Doe began billing himself as "The Emperor of the Universe" and wearing a cape and crown he became a famous local eccentric on the New Orleans scene. K-Doe continued performing and occasionally recording until shortly before his death. Always an elaborate showman, one of K-Doe's most notable later performances was at New Orleans' Aquarium of the Americas where he performed at a benefit for a local group aiding people with disabilities. The show ended with K-Doe performing seven continuous renditions of "Mother In Law" while dancing in front of the Gulf of Mexico shark tank exhibit dressed in a green plumed cape. Later recordings of note include "White Boy, Black Boy." While best known as a singer, he was also an accomplished drummer.

The song 'Here Come The Girls' was released in 1970 in England, but was not a hit. It was re-released in 2007 and made No. 43. A cover by the Sugababes made No.3 in the UK charts in 2008.

New Ruf Records release : Voodoo Moon - Savoy Brown - review

Savoy Brown started as a more traditional blues band back in the 60's but became almost synonymous with Boogie during the 70's. Although band leader, Kim Simmonds has remained a constant with the band over the years a compliment of other players in the group have influenced the general sound widely. Early Savoy Brown albums such as "Raw Sienna", "Street Corner Talking" and "Looking In" firmly planted Savoy Brown in the modern "bone chilling" blues bands with a slow melding into album oriented music in "Hellbound Train". By the early 70's and the release of "Lions Share's" rock hit "Tell Mama" cast a new stone into the fire. With new addition of Chicken Shacks Stan Webb and the departure of Dave Peverett along with the bands rhythm section (to form Foghat) the band started off on a journey of continuous experimentation producing a number of interesting blues rock oriented recordings.

This new Savoy Brown release (cd or Vinyl!!) is possibly the best release since the the late 80's!! There have been some great live releases by the band but none of their studio releases were really on par with the band that was Savoy Brown up until the mid 70's. Now I have kept up with the band and have seen them personally live possibly 10 times in the past 7 years and they are always great in concert. Kim Simmonds is an incredible guitar player and extremely personable. A guy who would play all night for you and likely buy you a beer afterwards...just a great guy!

I know that their tour repertoire always includes a healthy dose of traditional Savoy Brown great songs but I can honestly say this release will be adding some great material to this group of songs and I am anxiously awaiting the bands return to town.

This is a band if you haven't seen...and you love blues guitar...is a must see!!

And this is a great release. Kims guitar tone is clean with a lot of grit as usual and the new vocalist is a great addition. Do you get the feeling that I like it?
