Bob Malone is Playin’ Up a Storm on New "Mojo Deluxe" CD Coming August 21 on Delta Moon Records

Bob Malone is Playin’ Up a Storm on New Mojo Deluxe CD Coming August 21 on Delta Moon Records

L.A.-Based Keyboardist/Singer/Songwriter on Tour This Summer and Fall with Solo Dates as Well as With Rock Legend, John Fogerty

LOS ANGELES, CA – Bob Malone, who has toured the world for two decades as a solo artist, as well as played keyboards in rock legend John Fogerty’s band since 2011, announces the release of his new CD, Mojo Deluxe, on Delta Moon Records, distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution. Bob Malone will support the release of Mojo Deluxe with a number of solo dates that showcase his unique hybrid of rock, blues and New Orleans R&B, delivered with high-energy piano virtuosity and a voice all his own. Shows include two weeks in the northeast in August, followed by southern dates in September and almost a month in the UK in October. Malone will also be doing more tour dates as a member of John Fogerty’s band as well.

Mojo Deluxe is the eighth solo album for Bob Malone, who was classically trained, holds a degree in jazz and has played a lifetime of shows at rock and roll clubs, theatres and arenas. Born and raised in New Jersey, he has lived in New York City, New Orleans and Boston, and is currently based in Los Angeles. Playing an average of 100 tour dates a year, he has shared stages with Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Buffett, Rickie Lee Jones, The Neville Brothers, Rev. Al Green, Dr. John and many others. As a solo artist, Bob tours the US, UK, Europe and Australia extensively, including sets at Glastonbury Music Festival and Colne Blues Festival in the UK; Long Beach Bayou Fest, Falcon Ridge Folk Fest in the US; plus the Blue Mountains Music Fest and Narooma Blues Fest in Australia. At the world-famous New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, he has twice played the legendary WWOZ Piano Night.

The even-dozen tracks on Mojo Deluxe feature the wide-breadth of Malone’s musical knowledge and include exiting originals, as well as cool covers of songs by Ray Charles (“Hard Times”) and Muddy Waters “She Moves Me”).  The sound is a perfect gumbo of dirty blues, classic rock & roll and New Orleans piano pyrotechnics. It’s where Bob Malone stomps his foot on a miked-up cigar box, rips on a funky old upright piano and a vintage Wurlitzer and sings fearlessly of life at the halfway point. It’s loaded with deep grooves, swamp rock, gospel-drenched ballads and plenty of nasty slide guitar. The all-star band backing him on the new CD includes harmonica player Stan Behrens (WAR), bassist Tim Lefebvre (Tedeschi-Trucks Band), drummer Mike Baird (Journey, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker), producer/guitarist Bob DeMarco and drummer Kenny Aronoff, Malone’s Fogerty bandmate. The album was recorded at several studios in the Los Angeles area, as well as in New York City.

Bob Malone offered insights into some of his songs contained on Mojo Deluxe:

“Certain Distance” - “I am an introvert, and a loner. I have always felt a little bit separate from my fellow humans. Most people - even the ones who know me well - take it personally. Which has always amazed me. So once and for all, I want you all to know it’s not you - It’s me. Now leave me alone.”

“I’m Not Fine” – “When people ask me how I’m doing, I say: “fine!” “great!” “never been better!” It’s the American way - nobody likes a complainer! But lately it’s been getting a lot harder to fake it. To be honest: I’m not fine. Thanks for asking.”

“Paris” – “When I tour Europe, I usually play Paris, and my wife, of course, likes to go there with me. When we are there together, it is terribly romantic and we sincerely feel we are in the finest place on earth. But the last time I played Paris, I went alone, and when you’re there alone, Paris is just a city full of French people. Smoking. And when the waiter gives you that Gallic arch of the brow when you ask about a table for one, you just can’t wait to go home.”

“Watching Over Me”- “It took me 25 years to write this song. In the early ‘90s I moved to Los Angeles from the east coast and before long I had a few gigs with country music legend Freddy Fender. There was this one show in Las Vegas and I completely underestimated how much gas money I would need to get there in my aging piece-of-sh*t Dodge van. By the time I arrived, my gas tank was empty, as was the half-pint of cheap whiskey in my glove box. I had no functioning credit cards, no money in my bank account and the gig paid by check. With nothing left to lose, I took the one single dollar I had left to my name and put it in a slot machine. I won two-hundred bucks. To this day, that’s really the only spiritual experience I’ve ever had. I’m still not a religious man, but I have to wonder…”

“Chinese Algebra” – “I always wanted to write something that would contain all of the eclectic elements of my piano playing in one coherent piece of music and discourage bad harmonica players from asking to sit in with the band. This is the result.”

“Can’t Get There From Here” – “I am Generation X, and I am middle-aged. And like every generation before, I can’t believe how fast it happened. I’ll spend the second half of my life trying to undo the damage done in the first half of my life. And maybe, in the end – redemption.”

In addition to releasing albums on his own and playing on scores of others as a session player and singer, Bob Malone played on the 2012 John Fogerty album, Wrote A Song For Everyone,  including Fogerty’s duets with Bob Seger, Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban. Bob’s TV appearances with John Fogerty included “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “The View.” His own music is heard regularly on “Dr. Phil,” “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Rachel Ray Show.” Malone’s albums have earned Top-20 spots on the Living Blues, Roots Music Report and Earshot radio charts, and are played on stations worldwide, including Sirius/XM’s Bluesville, BBC Radio 2, Jazz-FM London and NPR’s Acoustic Café.

Kurzweil Music Systems chose Malone to make the demo videos for their new Forte digital piano, and he is endorsed by QSC Audio, Hammond Organ and Fishman Acoustic Transducers.

“Pulsating, roaring keyboard work that grabs you and shakes you until you cry for mercy.”- Keyboard Magazine

“John Fogerty’s five-man backup band was slouch-free, too — with the show-stealer trophy going to a shaggy-haired Bob Malone”- Edmonton Journal

“Malone’s latest shows off everything that makes him great and more. Great songs, amazing production and playing, it doesn’t get much better than this.” - Filter

“If he could find a way to throw that Steinway grand over his shoulder the way a hot dog guitar player does, I think he would.” - NOLA Defender

“[Malone] showed that while he is a fantastically technically accomplished player, he fully knows the meaning of showmanship as well. A true virtuoso and crowd-pleaser.” Shetland News

Bob Malone will also release a DVD later this summer that contains many of the songs on Mojo Deluxe

WALTER TROUT TRIUMPHANTLY RETURNS TO THE STAGE AT
LONDON'S ROYAL ALBERT HALL FOLLOWING RECOVERY
FROM SUCCESSFUL LIVER TRANSPLANT
Studio Album Featuring All New Material Planned For Fall Release Globally
Video From The Royal Albert Hall: http://smarturl.it/WT-RAH-YT

London, UK --- Thirteen months ago Walter Trout underwent a successful life-saving liver transplant.  Last night, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the esteemed Bluesman took the stage for the first time following a long, arduous path of extensive rehabilitation and recovery.  The crowd welcomed him with a standing ovation, followed by two more during his performance.  This event was staged to benefit the Shooting Star Chase Children's Hospice Care, and with Trout's altruistic commitment to participate in events that benefit good causes, this made the evening more meaningful than ever.

The Lead Belly Fest appearance kicked off a tour that will take Trout across the globe as he resumes his career of fifty plus years.  Trout shares, "I have been dreaming about this moment for so long. After experiencing the immense impact this has had on me as my body shut-down, and I could not walk, talk or even think about playing or singing, this seems almost surreal. It is like a phantom from another era that is mysteriously re-emerging, and here I stand stronger than I have been for years.  It is hard to express how poignant this feels to have my full voice, strength, musicianship and command of musical language back.  I am emotionally charged, explosive with feelings, and over the moon excited to re-experience what I love to do - playing for people – engaging them to walk with me through the Blues. Last night was an amazing experience, and although just a taste of what is yet to come, it feels unbelievable to pick up the guitar, step behind the microphone, and feel alive. My fans showed me so much love, support, and a commitment to help me in my time of need, the moment is here to get back out there and bring the music to each and every one of them who enabled me to see this day."

Walter Trout will make appearances across Europe and North America in the coming months.  His first announced U.S. date sold-out months ago, and will be staged at a venue where he has a long history - The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA on July 10.  Confirmed appearances include:

Walter Trout recently entered the studio to record an album of all new material that will be released this Fall.  His prior effort, THE BLUES CAME CALLIN' captured Trout reflecting on his omnipresent thoughts about mortality and his renewed appreciation for being alive.  Amongst the twelve new songs, ten are originals.  One is written by John Mayall for the occasion, and the other is a J.B. Lenoir cover. Trout searches his soul on this album and lays it bare allowing the celebration of his career to be infused with new appreciation for life.  THE BLUES CAME CALLIN'  was produced by Walter Trout and Eric Corne.  An EPK can be screened here: http://youtu.be/btiS6ijncMk.

Last year, Mascot Label Group's Provogue Records reissued multiple titles from Trout's career, presented a career spanning documentary, and released an official biography Rescued From Reality - The Life and Times of Walter Trout.  Co-written with British music journalist Henry Yates, the manuscript features previously untold stories, and is packed with rare photographs from the Trout's personal archive. It documents an initially blissful childhood, shattered by divorce, abuse, and violence.  As the story unfolds, it leads us through Walter’s life of heartache, poverty, living on the street and being “the only white guy” struggling in famous blues bands in LA in the late 1970’s.  Walter reflects on his time in the 1980’s when nobody cared to hear the blues, to being “discovered” and having long-time gigs as a hard-playing and hard-drinking and drugging globetrotting sideman with Canned Heat and John Mayall.  The book chronicles how Walter eventually became drug-free, broke out on his own and embarked on a solo career in 1989.

Mighty Sam McClain was born on April 15, 1943 in the Ouachita Parish seat of Monroe, Louisiana. He began his lifelong love affair with music at the age of five, singing in his mother’s Gospel Church.  At thirteen, seeking to escape an abusive stepfather, Sam left home and began his life on the road. Following local guitarist “Little Melvin” Underwood through the Chitlin Circuit, the name given to the Southern venues friendly to black performers during segregation, he started as a valet but worked his way up to his rightful home as a lead vocalist.
By 1963 Sam had become a regular at Abe’s 506 Club in Pensacola, Florida. It was there he met DJ Papa Don Schroeder who would produce Mighty Sam’s first hit in 1966 with Amy Records – “Sweet Dreams (of You)”.

Later recordings at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Sheffield, Alabama, would produce popular singles including “Fannie Mae” and “In the Same Old Way”. Sam would go on to perform at the Apollo Theater, but his success proved to be short-lived.
The 1970s were some troubled times for Sam as he moved from Nashville to New Orleans. He battled alcoholism and found himself homeless. He lived on park benches, worked menial jobs, and even sold his plasma to get by. Though this rough patch lasted the better part of fifteen years, Sam never did stop singing.
Opportunity knocked when his friends in The Neville Brothers offered him the chance to go on tour.  In 1986 with a renewed career, Sam recorded an EP, “Your Perfect Companion”, for Orleans Records and was invited to perform and record a live album in Japan.  The new attention attracted Hammond Scott, who brought the now northeast-based McClain to Black Top Records for “Hubert Sumlin’s Blues Party”.  The record, which featured him on four songs with Howlin’ Wolf’s guitar player, was produced by guitarist and future AudioQuest Music label-mate Ronnie Earl.

McClain moved to Boston in 1992 and began playing with Uptown Revival.  The band included a core that he would later go on to record with – Bruce Katz (keyboards), Kevin Berry (guitar) and Lorne Entress (drums).  Entress helped Sam to send a demo to Joe Harley, founder of AudioQuest Music.  Mighty Sam inked a deal that would result in a series of his most popular albums including “Give It Up To Love” and “Sledgehammer Soul & Down Home Blues”.  The latter would be nominated for a W.C. Handy Award.  “New Man in Town”, from his 1998 release “Journey” would go on to be prominently featured on Fox TV’s Ally McBeal.  Sam would next release albums on both CrossCut Records (“Joy and Pain: Live in Europe”) and Telarc (“Blues for the Soul” and “Sweet Dreams” – both Handy nominated).  Sam released three new recordings throughout the 2000s under Mighty Music, a label of his own.  Drawing great praise was 2003’s “One More Bridge to Cross” where McClain leaned more heavily on the soul side of his musical tastes.

Sam recorded a duet with an unexpected partner for 2007’s “Give US Your Poor”.  The record, a benefit for a cause very close to McClain – the homeless, included “Show Me the Way” with New Jersey rock star Jon Bon Jovi.  This would only be the start to Sam’s cross-genre exchange.

Following the sale of AudioQuest Music, and subsequent renaming to Sledgehammer Blues – a name in honor of one of Sam’s songs, to New York’s Valley Entertainment, Sam was asked to record an album of duets with Iranian folk singer Mahsa Vahdat.  As a co-release in 2010 with the prestigious Norwegian label Kirkelig Kulturverksted, “Scent of Reunion: Love Duets Across Civilizations” brought together the international community through themes of love and freedom.

The success of the collaboration sparked a vintage feeling soul-blues record with Norwegian blues guitarist Knut Reiersrud (“One Drop Is Plenty”) and a reprise with Vahdat (“A Deeper Tone of Longing: Love Duets Across Civilizations”).
Nicknamed “The Soul of America” to his fans in Europe, McClain was nominated for 23 W.C. Handy Awards/Blues Music Awards throughout his incredible career.
After facing health issues throughout the spring of 2015, his family confirmed his passing on June 16, 2015 via his official Facebook page.

Red Rudy Too Tunes artists: Eight O'Five Jive - Too Many Men - New release review

I just received the newest release, Too Many Men, from Eight O'Five Jive and it has a life of it's own. Opening with Big Maybelle's I've Got A Feeling, a fifties style jump track with a reggae beat. Have Mercy Baby has a light springy feel with lead vocals by Lee Shropshire, backing vocals by Duane Spencer, Andy Scheinman, Bill Bois and Patrick Mosser. Mosser also plays a pretty spiffy sax solo on this track. On the slinky, Baby I'm Doin' It, Shropshire lays down some of the nicest lead vocals on the track and backing vocals are tight as well. Misery Loves Company opens with a nice sax riff and a smooth jump beat. Mosser takes center stage with a cool sax solo and Spencer's rhythm is tight. J Liggins' jump track, Drunk is definitely one of the hottest tracks on the release with another cool solo from Mosser as well as a nice one from Scheinman as well. Smooth jazz track, You Was Right Baby, has a real nice guitar solo from Scheinman and a tight melodic line from Mosser as well. Feed Them Monkeys is a fun track with call and response vocals. Mosser kicks up a fat sax solo and gets this track hopping. Big Jay McNeely's hot track, Insect Ball has real spunk and Mosser takes full opportunity to sax out. Nice! Easy going, Kissing In The Dark, gives Scheinman a nice chance to stretch a little on guitar. Fast paced, Young Enough To Be My Son, has a great gait and Scheinman shows her cool vocal skills. Scheinman and Mosser trade solos making this another of the coolest tracks on the release. Very nice! Title track, Too Many Men, has a real sweet guitar solo with double stop bends and Mosser blows out a sweet melodic line of his own. Very cool. Latin influenced, Market Place, breaks back and forth to swing. When this band is in full tilt, it's in full tilt. The rock a billy guitar riffs by Scheinman a sharp and Mosser's riffs are fat. Nice closer for this release.
