Lonesome Valley - MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT

John Smith Hurt, better known as Mississippi John Hurt (July 3, 1893 or March 8, 1892 — November 2, 1966) was an American country blues singer and guitarist.

Raised in Avalon, Mississippi, Hurt taught himself how to play the guitar around age nine. Singing in a loud whisper, to a melodious finger-picked accompaniment, he began to play local dances and parties while working as a sharecropper. He first recorded for Okeh Records in 1928, but these were commercial failures, and Hurt drifted out of the recording scene, where he continued his work as a farmer. After a man discovered a copy of one of his recordings, "Avalon Blues", which gave the location of his hometown, there became increased interest in his whereabouts. Tom Hoskins, a blues enthusiast, would be the first to locate Hurt in 1963. He convinced Hurt to relocate to Washington, D.C., where he was recorded by the Library of Congress in 1964. This rediscovery helped further the American folk music revival, which had led to the rediscovery of many other bluesmen of Hurt's era. Hurt entered the same university and coffeehouse concert circuit as his contemporaries, as well as other Delta blues musicians brought out of retirement. As well as playing concerts, he recorded several studio albums for Vanguard Records.

He died in Grenada, Mississippi. Material recorded by Hurt has been re-released by many record labels over the years ; and his influence has extended over many generations of guitarists. Songs recorded by Hurt have been covered by Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Beck, Doc Watson, John McCutcheon, Taj Mahal, Bruce Cockburn, David Johansen, Bill Morrissey and Guthrie Thomas.
Born John Smith Hurt in Teoc, Carroll County, Mississippi and raised in Avalon, Mississippi, he learned to play guitar at age nine. He was completely self-taught, playing his mother's boyfriend's guitar whenever he stayed over at her house. His style was not reminiscent of any other style being played at the time; it was the way Hurt "thought the guitar should sound". He spent much of his youth playing old time music for friends and dances, earning a living as a farmhand into the 1920s. His fast, highly syncopated style of playing made his music adept for dancing. On occasion, a medicine show would come through the area; Hurt recalls being wanted by one of them. "One of them wanted me, but I said no because I just never wanted to get away from home." In 1923 he partnered with the fiddle player Willie Narmour as a substitute for his regular partner Shell Smith.
Hurt died of a heart attack in Grenada, Mississippi.

Drink You Up - Mike Hammar and the Nails

Mike Hammar has been playing the blues up and down the state of California for the past 25 years. He put together a hard working blues band in 2001 and swore he would do his best to write, record, and perform his own style of blues. One of the songs from this album "This Ain't Goodbye" was nominated for an an Independent Music Award. Blues for the Gulf selected another song from the album, "Before Miss Katrina", to be part of a national multi-artist digitally released album in 2010. Mike's music has been featured on Sirius XM Radio's BB King Bluesville station. Mike and his crew have had the honor of opening for some of the biggest names in modern blues. They continue to make their mark on the California blues scene with well crafted original music and heart felt performances. Guitar Maestro Alastair Greene Performs@Blues Brews & BBQ In Visalia

Guitar maestro Alastair Greene returns again this year to perform at the Blues Brews & BBQ Festival in Visalia on Friday, July 6. Greene also plays the following night, Saturday, July 7 at Rookies Grill in Visalia.

What The Press Is Saying About Alastair Greene And His Latest Album, "Through The Rain"

"Greene's opener, the incendiary, Eruption-like "Before The Storm," makes it crystal clear he's a gunslinger who could tear the roof off of any roadhouse blues bar...and his role as a Alan Parsons sideman only beefs up his guitar cred. All told, "Through The Rain," the swaggering "Stoneroller" and the Tony Iomi-influenced "Madman" are solid platforms for his exceptional musicianship."

MUSIC CONNECTION

"Alastair Greene has a day gig that could cause guitar envy, balancing the lead guitar seat since 2010 for the Alan Parsons Project while still releasing solo efforts...like classic rock heavy hitters in the vein of Led Zeppelin and Hendrix, Alastair Greene rocks hard on "Through The Rain" and then rocks a little harder, just to make sure you get it." THE ALTERNATE ROOT

"Through The Rain" is Alastair Greene's latest solo release and his best to date...formed from a similar mold as some other powerhouse guitarists like Warren Haynes and Lance Lopez, Greene manages to transform obvious '60's and '70's classic rock influences into a much more explosive 21st Century version of those oh-so-familiar hard-driving, pulse-pounding, and speaker-bursting treats. There is absolutely nothing here not to love, the tracks are all outstanding, vocals all strong, band always spot on, and Greene's playing and singing world class." BLUESROCKERS

Guitarist Alastair Greene Perform At Blues Brews & BBQ In Visalia - Fri., July 6

A festival favorite, the Alastair Greene band again returns to play the Kern River Rock N Blues Festival in Bakersfield on September 28-29.

*But Wait, There's More...*

"As those in the know will tell you, there's a hotbed of talent roaming our streets, from trained session players to some of the industry's most indispensable touring musicians. At the head of that pack is Alastair Greene...the electric and eclectic bar-ready rock of Through The Rain is sure to dazzle even the most casual of players, but it's slow-burning instrumental numbers like "Dearly Departed" that remind us why Greene's talents go far beyond his chops."

Aly Comingore, SANTA BARBARA INDEPENDENT

"Local guitar god Alastair Greene's delightfully dexterous digits will do their thing...his latest, Through The Rain, is a little more classic rock, but the shredding remains..."

Bill Locey, VENTURA COUNTY STAR

"In blues circles, his chops precede him, but rock fans have likely never heard Alastair Greene - and they need to. On (Though The Rain), his fourth solo record, Greene ups the ante with head-turning riffs and solos to beckon Duane Allman from on high. A gifted guitarist."

Michel Cicero/VENTURA COUNTY REPORTER

Check out Greene's infectious blues/rockin' tune "Drunk Again" performed live at the Real Blues Festival of Orange County 2 last May:

About Alastair Greene

Alastair Greene's career path has taken some interesting turns over the last couple of years. Between accepting the enviable job as lead guitarist for The Alan Parsons Live Project in 2010, and being the only unsigned act invited to play the 2010 Sonora Blues Festival, Greene has been performing a wide variety of music on stages the world over. Greene also recently signed to LeRoi Record to release his newest recorded offering. THROUGH THE RAIN may come as a bit of a shock to those who only became aware of Greene's music via his Blues-based live band and previous CD releases. If his 2009 record WALKING IN CIRCLES was a musical tribute to Greene's Blues heroes, then THROUGH THE RAIN would be his tribute to his hard rock upbringing.

From the Led Zeppelin-style riffing of the title track, to the Hendrix-meets-Pearl Jam of closer 'You Will Remember', Greene spends the majority of his new release in old-school hard rocking territory. THROUGH THE RAIN is even more eclectic than his 2002 debut A LITTLE WISER. 'Take Me With You' conjures up laid back Americana sounds that will be familiar to fans of The Black Crowes, while 'The Real You' mines a deep Funk Rock groove with extended solos reminiscent of heavier jam bands such as Gov't Mule. Greene has not abandoned his love for the Blues and its early Rock n' Roll off shoots, as up-tempo barnburner 'T'other Way' and the mid-tempo retro-rocker 'Stoneroller' prove. THROUGH THE RAIN also touches on a wide variety of lyrical themes, including stories of love lost and won, songs that question political motives, and introspective topics such as what happens after this life is over.

The musician line-up on THROUGH THE RAIN gives the album a wide variety of feels and grooves. The drumming is split between long time Alastair Greene Band drummer Tom Lackner (who has been touring with Jeff Bridges) and former Dishwalla drummer George Pendergast. AGB bassist Jim Rankin, former Summercamp bassist Misha Feldmann and Greene himself share bass duties. As a special treat for guitar fans, Ty Tabor (guitarist for the legendary King's X) engages in a guitar solo trade-off with Greene on the first single from the record 'By The Way'.

"Alastair should be playing with the biggest bands in the world. I believe it's just a matter of time." - Alan Parsons

(Austin, Texas) Hot Tuna, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, rev up their audiences with groundbreaking music and insightful songs that keep them a moving musical force. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees from their legendary Jefferson Airplane days, Hot Tuna constantly updates their repertoire always keeping a roisterous sound and a wry sense of humor. Adding dimension to Acoustic Hot Tuna is mandolin virtuoso Barry Mitterhoff. Hot Tuna has just released a two-hour live performance DVD, Jorma’s 70th Birthday Celebration with special guests and guitar players galore. (HotTuna.com)
“The symbiotic force of Kaukonen and Casady’s electrifying music led the band into a seminal rock jam. All told, the stunning performance cemented Hot Tuna’s continued presence as a fresh and innovative face of rock blues more than 50 years after the duo began playing together.” – Crawdaddy
“Kaukonen's highly inventive guitar work rocks tough and articulate, clean as a cat's whiskers. He still sings with that slightly strange, quintessentially laid-back voice, waxing wry with an existential bent. His melodies, even mean as a snake, have warmed over the years. Casady is Casady, one of the most unorthodox and profoundly gifted bassists ever known to rock music. They've always been a fascinating pair." – Twin Cities Daily Planet
Greats, Innovators, Initiators of Psychedelic Rock, Purveyors of the Blues, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady are all these and more, they are themselves masters of expression. Rip Cat Records artists: Fun On Saturday Night - The Blasters - New Release Review

On July 3rd (2012) Rip Cat Records will be releasing the much anticipated new release from The Blasters, Fun On Saturday Night. Phil Alvin on Vocals, Harmonica and Guitar is joined by Keith Wyatt on Guitar; John Bazz on Bass and Bill Bateman on Drums. The recording opens with a hot rendition of Tiny Bradshaw's Well Oh Well, a fast paced jump style blues track. Alvin's vocals are strong, Wyatts guitar playing is clean and articulate and the rhythm section is tight. This place is hoppin! Next up is a duet with Excene (Cervenka) on Jackson. Keeping an exciting pace but breaking away from a traditional arrangement, The Blasters do this with classic style. Fun On Saturday Night is a a slick uptempo blues track keeping in the early rock feel and develops a real nice groove. Next up is No Nights By Myself which gets stylistic makeover. Alvin's vocals are supplemented with some sweet harp playing and the band maintains a really vintage sound on this track which is particularly effective. Magic Sam's Love Me With A Feeling takes a rockin' shuffle with some vintage guitar riffs giving it a totally unique flavor. I Don't Want Cha is straight up Chicago with single line lead and rhythm answering every vocal call and Alvin playing a cool harp stretch in the track. Although there aren't any real long guitar solos, Wyatt really holds hos own on guitar throwing down some nice riffs. Pulling one of my favorites, James Brown's Please Please Please from the mix bag is a special treat. A number of bands will pull a JB track and play a hot guitar solo but The Blasters take it head on using James' arrangement and Alvin does a really cool job following in the footsteps of one of the all time greatest performers. Rock My Blues Away gets back into the jump blues groove and most contemporary bands have a difficult time competing with The Blasters at this game. Wyatt again demonstrates his clean guitar playing along with the already tight band. Maria Maria, a Davie Alvin composition, completes the package. This is a song written in the traditional Mexican style with Kid Ramos on Baja Sexto. I really like it.
This is an interesting outing from The Blasters and one that is certain to please existing fans as well as win them a healthy helping of new ones.

Dennis Gruenling (l) and Doug Deming (r) have both released new albums and are touring together

About: Dennis Gruenling

After receiving his first harmonica as a gift from a family friend while in his teens, he had heard his first blues record and his life was never the same! Having been in New Orleans during 1992-'93, Dennis came back home to the Garden State of New Jersey and quickly gained a reputation as a young rising star on the local blues scene, working in a couple different local blues bands. In 1998 he started to form his own local "all-star" band, using members pulled from other regional bands. Since his self-titled debut with that band ("Dennis Gruenling & Jump Time!") in 1999, Gruenling has pulled in countless fans and numerous accolades from critics and musicians around the world for his swinging, highly original harmonica sound and style. Taking equal parts from the blues harmonica and swing saxophone traditions and styles, Dennis has pushed the boundaries further for blues harmonica, while in the meantime pioneering a whole new sound and direction for the instrument. http://www.dennisgruenling.com.

"Dennis Gruenling has become the new harp player's harp player...one of the most critically acclaimed of his generation" - JUKE JOINT SOUL

"Dennis Gruenling is a leading light among a new generation of harp players...stands poised to claim a spot in the pantheon of blues harmonica greats." - BLUES REVUE

About: Doug Deming

"We have no gimmicks," says leader Doug Deming. "We play pure traditional music from the heart, with an image that conveys a deep respect for the genre." As a result, Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones have been become regulars on the national blues and jazz touring circuit as well as an 'in demand' backing band for a 'who's-who' of today's top American roots music performers, including Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Louisiana Red, Chicago Pete, vocalist Alberta Adams, Black Top's Johnnie Dyer, W.C. Handy Award winner Johnny 'Yard Dog' Jones and the legendary Lazy Lester. Detroit guitarist and Handy multi-award nominee Johnnie Bassett describes the band as "great talent...that people outside the area will come to know."
Doug Deming has been the driving force behind the Jewel Tones (formerly known as the Blue Suit Band) since it's beginning in 1991. As a guitarist and vocalist, he acknowledges a musical debt everyone from T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters to Nat Cole and Count Basie. Says Detroit blues writer George Seedorff: "Doug is equally at home playing straight ahead on the solid body guitar or swinging on the big jazz box." The group's recordings achieve originality while staying deep in the genre. http://www.reverbnation.com/dougdemingthejeweltones.

"Doug Deming's 'Falling Through The Cracks' features solid performances on a program that encompasses a variety of blues styles." - BLUES FESTIVAL E-GUIDE
"You can sit and listen to the Blues or you can get up and start dancing to it. Doug Deming and The Jewel Tones' 'Falling Through the Cracks' will certainly get you doing the latter, with one of the finest mixes of 50's Style Rockabilly, Classic Jump/Boogie, Shuffle, and Swing I have recently heard." - BLUES UNDERGROUND

My Girl - Temptations

The Temptations are an American vocal group known for their success in the 60s and 70s at Motown Records. The group's repertoire has included, during its five-decade career, R&B, doo-wop, funk, disco, soul, and adult contemporary music. Known for their recognizable choreography, distinct harmonies, and flashy onstage suits, the Temptations have been said to be as influential to soul as The Beatles are to pop and rock.

Formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1960 as The Elgins (not to be confused with another Motown group with the same name), the Temptations have always featured at least five male vocalists/dancers. Having sold tens of millions of albums, the Temptations are one of the most successful groups in music history. As of 2010, the Temptations continue to perform and record for Universal Records with its one living original member, Otis Williams, still in its lineup.

The original lineup included members of two local Detroit vocal groups: from The Distants, second tenor Otis Williams, first tenor Elbridge "Al" Bryant, and bass Melvin Franklin; and from The Primes, first tenor/falsetto Eddie Kendricks and second tenor/baritone Paul Williams (no relation to Otis). Among the most notable future Temptations were lead singers David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards (both later solo artists), Ali-Ollie Woodson, Ron Tyson, Glenn Leonard, Damon Harris, Richard Street, Theo Peoples, and G. C. Cameron. Like its "sister" female group, the Supremes, the Temptations' lineup has changed frequently over the years.

Over the course of their career, the Temptations have released four Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles and 14 Billboard R&B number-one singles. Their material has earned them three Grammy Awards, while two more awards were conferred upon the songwriters and producers who crafted their 1972 hit "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone". The Temptations were the first Motown act to earn a Grammy Award. Six Temptations (Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Otis Williams, and Paul Williams) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Three classic Temptations songs, "My Girl", "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", are among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

Can´t Hold Out - Danny Vincent & Robson Fernandes

It´s impossible to separate Robson Fernandes from the contemporary Brazilian Blues scene. A man who possesses extraordinary tone and energy demonstrating a fantastic technical prowess. His style is at the same level of many of the great harp players outside of Brazil, and that is why many of these same great players bow to young Robson´s creative sound.

Robson Fernandes was born in 1976 in the city Sao Paulo - Brazil, he started playing Diatonic Harmonic at the age of 16, his passion aligned with the study of early 20th century North American Blues. He studied Harmony and Improvisation with the Jazz guitar player Lupa Santiago and the famous Trombonist - Bocato.

In 2002 he released the first Instrumental Blues Harp CD "Sampa Blues" Robson was surrounded by some of the best Blues and Jazz artist on his first outing.

On his second CD 2005 the "Gumbo Blues" marked a new cycle of intense emotions and daring beside his impeccable playing technique, he ventures out not only playing his harp but also doing all of the vocal workouts. This album stands, as an historic landmark for Brazilian harp players the first distributed in Europe and in the United States by Pacific Blues run by the record producer Jerry Hall. Robson Fernandes has participated in the principle Jazz and Blues Festival in Brazil.

After woodshedding with his band Victor Busquets drums, Renato Limao Bass and Danilo Simi on Guitar, Robson entered the studio in June/July 2008. A few month later the “COOL” CD is released. This album was recorded old school style on 24 tracks studer analog tape machines with everyone in the studio playing together thus giving it that distinct sound not found on many modern recordings. This outing by Robson F. was engineered and produced by co-writer Carlos sander from the U.S.

On this Cd Robson explores different styles and rhythms not just your usual 12 bar blues. While maintaining the spirit of Chicago, California and New Orleans. The Recording of “COOL” also had invited guests such as Californian saxophonist Troy Jennings, the incredible guitar work of Marcos Ottaviano and the subtle piano of Ari Borger. Once again Robson innovates by recording a string octet on the track “ I love You So” making in the first Brazilian Blues Record with strings.

Robson strikes again notoriety with his latest CD “COOL” not just here but globally. In November 2009 , RF played at the Blues Festival in the city of Ezquel in Argentina playing along side bluesman Danny Vincent. Next on the Festival circuit RF was invited to perform at the Blues Festival of Torun. After a (SRO) standing room only performance Robson and company played in the city of Warsaw both cities located in Poland. All of these shows were written up in great detail by the canadian publishers of “Real Blues Magazine” which awarded the “COOL” CD the number eight slot in it´s Top 100.
