I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Poor Boy - RL Burnside
R. L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 – September 1, 2005), born Robert Lee Burnside, was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist who lived much of his life in and around Holly Springs, Mississippi. He played music for much of his life, but did not receive much attention until the early 1990s. In the latter half of the 1990s, Burnside repeatedly recorded with Jon Spencer, garnering crossover appeal and introducing his music to a new fan base within the underground garage rock scene.
One commentator noted that Burnside, along with Big Jack Johnson, Paul "Wine" Jones, Roosevelt "Booba" Barnes and James "Super Chikan" Johnson, were "present-day exponents of an edgier, electrified version of the raw, uncut Delta blues sound."
In the 1990s, he appeared in the film Deep Blues and began recording for the Oxford, Mississippi, label Fat Possum Records. Founded by Living Blues magazine editor Peter Redvers-Lee and Matthew Johnson, the label was dedicated to recording aging North Mississippi bluesmen such as Burnside and Junior Kimbrough.
Burnside remained with Fat Possum from that time until his death, and he usually performed with drummer Cedric Burnside, his grandson, and with his friend and understudy, the slide guitarist Kenny Brown, with whom he began playing in 1971 and claimed as his "adopted son."
In the mid 1990s, Burnside attracted the attention of Jon Spencer, the leader of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, touring and recording with this group and gaining a new audience in the process.
Burnside's 1996 album A Ass Pocket of Whiskey (recorded with Jon Spencer) gained massive critical acclaim, earning praise from music legends Bono and Iggy Pop. During this time he also provided the entertainment at private events such Richard Gere's birthday party.
After the death of Kimbrough and the burning of Kimbrough's juke joint in Chulahoma, Mississippi, Burnside quit recording studio material for Fat Possum, though he did continue to tour. After a heart attack in 2001, Burnside's doctor advised him to stop drinking; Burnside did, but he reported that change left him unable to play.
Burnside at the Double Door Inn in Charlotte, N.C. in 1998
Members of his large extended family continue to play blues in the Holly Springs area: grandson Cedric Burnside tours with Kenny Brown and most recently with Steve 'Lightnin' Malcolm as part of the 'Juke Joint Duo', while his son Duwayne Burnside has played guitar with the North Mississippi Allstars (Polaris; Hill Country Revue with R. L. Burnside). Nephew Garry Burnside used to play bass guitar with Junior Kimbrough and in 2006 released an album with Cedric. In 2004, the Burnside sons opened Burnside Blues Cafe, located 30 miles southeast of Memphis at the intersection of U.S. Highway 78 and Mississippi Highway 7 in Holly Springs.

Separation Blues - Patrick Sky
Patrick Sky (born Patrick Lynch in Liveoak Gardens, Georgia, in 1943) is a musician, singer and songwriter of Irish and Native American ancestry (Creek Indian, Sky was raised near the Lafourche Swamps of Louisiana). A contemporary of Bob Dylan and others in the Greenwich Village folk boom of the 1960s, following military service Sky released a number of well received albums from 1965 onwards and played with many of the leading performers of the period, particularly Buffy Sainte-Marie, Eric Andersen and the blues singer Mississippi John Hurt (whose Vanguard albums Sky produced). Sky's song "Many A Mile" became a folk club staple, and has been recorded by Sainte-Marie and others.
Becoming increasingly disillusioned with the music business and politically radical, Sky released the controversial and scabrously satirical Songs That Made America Famous in 1973 (the album was recorded in 1971 but rejected by several record companies before it found a home); to this day he claims to have received no royalties for the album. This album featured the earlier known recorded version of the song "Luang Prabang," written by Sky's friend Dave Van Ronk. Patrick Sky had honed his politically charged satire in earlier albums, but Songs That Made America Famous raised the stakes. The Adelphi Records website describes how the content was, indeed, shocking; yet, how several critics encouraged the public to rush to buy these timely and brilliant "explicit lyrics" while it could. Sky gradually moved into the field of Irish traditional music, founding Green Linnet Records in 1973. Today he is recognised as an expert in building and playing the Irish uillean pipes, often performing with his wife, Cathy. He has also published several books on the subject.

If You Walk with the Devil - Lightnin' Guy & The Mighty Gators Ft. Guy Forsyth
Lightnin’ Guy is the hardest working performer in the Belgian blues & roots scene. After Blue Blot & the Electric Kings, Belgium has a new top act that not only conquers the hearts of the blues-and-rootslovers in Belgium, but also is on the brink of a breakthrough onto the European stages.
Since his first show in May 2008 he is on a crazy rollercoaster ride. During the first half-year on the road Lightnin’ Guy played more than 40 shows, toured through the Netherlands & Austria and recorded his debut album „Live from the Heart“. In 2009 he did over 70 shows & in 2010 he played 130 shows, played on the legendary Peer Blues, Kwadendamme Blues & Gouvy Jazz-Blues Festival. It was for Parsifal Records an honour to sign Lightnin’ Guy. We first released his debut album on our Blue Sting label.
Today Lightnin’ Guy is considered a real hot live sensation and continues to conquer the hearts of the blues & roots lovers in Belgium & Holland. Nowadays he plays the biggest festivals and already shared the same bill as John Fogerty, Jeff Beck, Steve Winwood, John Mayall , Joe Bonanmasa, Derek Trucks, ... Lightnin’ Guy also opened concerts for The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Louis Walker, Canned Heat, Eddie C. Campbell, Sherman Robertson, Dr. Feelgood, The Nighthawks, Ian Siegal …
As his slide & harpstyle are very emotional, unique & authentic, a Lightnin’ Guy show is always very energetic. As he says:“ In a world of plastic & virtuality, people want real things“. A Lightnin’ Guy show is all about energy and total surrender to the audience. This makes him a real crowd pleaser. By playing in the ‘Louisiana swamp & Chicago slide & harp’-tradition, he always succeeds in making everybody dance and sing along to his tight, groovy, honest riffs & licks. Lightnin' Guy is not only an excellent musician & singer, but also an all-round entertainer. It does not matter for whom he plays nor where, people always start shaking their asses and having a mighty good time, when Lightnin’ Guy is on stage.

Cheryl Renee with Them Bones Blues Band
Featuring Little Al Thomas on vocals and lead guitar and Sonny HIll on vocals and keyboard. Little Al has a voice made for blues and his fabulous guitar work sets THEM BONES above the rest. Sonny's vocal style and kickass keys compliments Little Al, reminiscent of Blues Greats, Sam and Dave. The bottom groove is provided by Larry Malott on bass and Tom Hamman on drums. Collectively the artists of THEM BONES have over 100 years of playing the blues all over the Midwest, East Coast, France and Italy.

Part two of this really super documentary. Again, I won't tell my story again but if you refer back to the archives, you'll find all of the history. I have probably seen Roy more times than any other band except Jeff Beck or Elvin Bishop (and Roy's been dead for many years).

New Release by The Twilite Broadcasters: The Trail of Time
I just received and had the chance to listen to the new release by The Twilight Broadcasters. I have a soft spot for the country blues and these guys have it down. This music as as straight forward and honest as the day is long and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. With Adam Tanner on Mandolin, Fiddle and Vocals and Mark Jackson on Guitar and Vocals, the rip through 12 tunes, mostly traditional and acoustic standards but I can tell you the release is over before you finish your coffee ... well, I don't drink coffee but it went by pretty fast. it isn't that the release is short but that it was so enjoyable.

Blues Deluxe - Otis Rush
This is an old song written by Jeff Beck (I Believe) called Blues Deluxe. It is labeled here as Gamblers Blues but I believe it is the same song. It has recently been covered to great success by Joe Bonamassa as well.

Classic Moments in Jubilee Showcase
I have had the pleasure to watch a DVD called Classic Moments in Jubilee Showcase. The compilation was hosted and produced by Sid Ordower and aired on ABC's Chicago affiliate television station WLS. This programmed from 1963 through 1984 and highlighted everyone from the youngest church performers to the most famous gospel performers of the time including James Cleveland, Albertina Walker, the Caravans, Andrae Crouch and the Diciples, the Might Clouds of Joy, the Soul Stirrers, the Staple Singers and the Barrett Sisters.
This is a very enjoyable program and illustrates the melding and fusion of the traditional gospel with music of the times.

Rollin and Tumblin - Duketown Slim
Duketown Slim aka Imco Ceelen sold his soul years ago ... not the dark prince, but to pure and honest blues. Alongside the waterfront with a bottle of wine and a melancholy adolescent heart, he withdrew his first "blue note" on a harmonica, which, like a spark in a barrel of gunpowder, resulted in an explosion of passion and boundless love for the genre.
There is much to tell about the Brabant town of 's-Hertogenbosch (also known as Duketown), it certainly has been a warm and open blues cradle for Imco and a lot of other blues musicians.
During his musical journey he came into contact with a number of local celebrities like Big Bo and the talented harp player Ruurd van der Vegt who took him under their wing without any reservations and taught him the joy of the acoustic and electric blues.
Before Duketown Slim really went "solo" he has preached the blues in many different configurations. As a Harp player he played in the bluesband Rambling Men and the rock/folk band Kicking Bill, as a singer/harp player in the acoustic duo B. Bound & Banker, and occasionally as a studio musician. He also visited a lot of local jam sessions where he really learned to play the blues, for learning to feel the blues is impossible without the input of others, whether it are fellow musicians or people in the audience.
Thru this wise lesson Imco created a unique, conversational style, which allows him to pull his audience into his blues reality.
Besides playing a lot of old blues songs, straight from the Delta, Duketown Slim recently started to write his own songs.
Who knows, maybe soon we can welcome a brand new debut-album into the blues world of this small country.
Imco has now moved to Utrecht and regularly preaches the words of Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Skip James, Muddy Waters and many other legendary bluesgurus.

Roy Buchanan - P.B.S. Greatest Unkown Guitarist in the World 1971 [PART 1]

Landslide Records artist: Sean Costello - At His Best Live - New release review
I just received the new release of Sean Costello's unreleased live music recorded live in the US and Europe between 2000 and 2007. This first ever completely live album by Costello includes 11 tracks which have not been included on any of his prior releases.
This release is particularly strong and reminds us just how great a musician Sean was before his untimely death in April of 2008.
This release runs the gamut of blues styles displayed by Costello from the shuffling sound and rhythmic syncopation of T-bone Walker on "Blue Shadows" and articulation of Gatemouth Brown on Lowell Fulsoms "Reconsider Baby" or the "The Humbuckle". He also demonstrates further his diversity on jazzed/funked up soul tunes "Check it Out" and "Change My Mind". He demonstrates his renown feel on "All Your Love" and Jonnie Taylor's "Doin' My Own Thing". A few times throughout the recording I detected a deep raspiness in his voice that I don't recall hearing before.
The entire recording is very strong but you have to hold on during "Motorhead Baby" cause the soloing is outrageous.
A great ending selected for the recording is "Lucille"... Little Richard's landmark song. This is one you can't miss! It it doesn't get you moving...you're dead!!!
A portion of the royalties from the sale of this "At His Best Live" will benefit the Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bi-Polar Research.

Eric Lindell - Tour Schedule
Northport N.Y. - It's been another rough year for the blues. We've lost so many great musicians. I wanted to just give thanks for all the great artists I get to work with everyday and my family who supports me unconditionally. I hope your Thanksgiving is full of happy reflection and you get to check out some great music live, on the radio or CD. Here's to the beginning of a peaceful holiday season for you and your family.

Eric Lindell has been on the road non-stop since the release of West County Drifter. Great reviews, stellar airplay have all combined to make the release one of the highlights of 2011
Check out these awesome reviews!!
Lindell's most accessible and striking release yet, with nary a slack track and several that seriously deserve to be heard by a wide audience
All Music Guide
A natural talent with a knack for penning vintage gems that harken back to the golden era of R&B, Eric Lindell is in top form on West County Drifter.

Pinetop Boogie - Dr.John
| Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack, Jr. (born November 21, 1940), better known by the stage name Dr. John (also Dr. John Creaux), is an American singer-songwriter, pianist and guitarist, whose music combines blues, pop, jazz as well as Zydeco, boogie woogie and rock and roll. Active as a session musician since the late 1950s, he came to wider prominence in the early 1970s with a wildly theatrical stage show inspired by medicine shows, Mardi Gras costumes and voodoo ceremonies. Rebennack has recorded over 20 albums and in 1973 scored a top-20 hit with the jaunty funk-flavored "Right Place Wrong Time", still perhaps his best-known song. The winner of five Grammy awards, Rebennack was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by singer John Legend on Monday, March 14, 2011. |
