The title of "Legend of the Russian Rock" stuck to me a long time.
Already in the early '80s Mikhail Sokolov, the Bish-I, were

We start from a distance. I was born in Moscow in 1953

It is difficult to accurately recall all the dates, and, still more than thirty five years, or rather thirty-seven, but one thing that I was very lucky. I was lucky in many ways. First time when I was born, it was time for change. Away with the cult of Stalin and Khrushchev's thaw came. We began to realize that we live in a beautiful country, with a crappy system and the best thing we could do to their appearance, their behavior and the music we were trying to play (albeit very badly at first) to blow up this socialist system with its dogmas and bans on all non Soviet.

We lived fine: ran on concerts BIT Group, went on nature hippovat, read forbidden books, rehearsing some nemyslemmye work, listening to music and a lot of music and all liked it.
But the most important thing is that then was a very trendy BLUES!

THE NIGHTHAWKS SIGN WITH SEVERN RECORDS; NEW CD RECORDED FOR EXPECTED RELEASE IN FIRST QUARTER OF 2012

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Severn Records announces the signing of seminal American roots music band The Nighthawks, who’ve already recorded their first album for the label, with an expected release date in the first quarter of 2012. The two Washington, DC-area based entities unite at a very special time in their history. Severn Records was just announced as the recipient of the 2012 Keeping the Blues Alive Award for Record Label from the Blues Foundation; and The Nighthawks are coming off their first-ever Blues Music Award (also from the Blues Foundation) -  Acoustic Blues Album of the Year - for their Last Train to Bluesville CD, presented in Memphis this past May.

The Nighthawks are: Mark Wenner - vocals, harmonica; Johnny Castle - vocals, bass; Paul Bell – guitar; and Mark Stutso - drums, vocals. Always known as one of the hardest working bands in the business, The Nighthawks continue to tour extensively and have several shows lined up featuring the band and their special guest, legendary singer Tracy Nelson (Mother Earth). The Nighthawks and Tracy Nelson shows are set for December 1 – Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis; December 2 – Blues Alley in Washington, DC; and December 4 - Shenanigans in Richmond, Virginia.

The Nighthawks’ still-untitled debut release for Severn Records was recorded at the label’s new state-of-the-art studios in Annapolis and features quite a bit of original material. Bassist Johnny Castle contributes a new tune and also sings on a version of Jimmy McCracklin’s “Georgia Slop;” while most-recent band member, drummer Mark Stutso, does four originals, demonstrating the added talent he brings to the band as a songwriter and additional singer. Other tracks reportedly cut include one Billy Price original, plus the classic “Smack Dab in the Middle” and Nat King Cole’s “Send for Me.”   

In addition to the band’s stellar catalogue of acclaimed albums released since 1974, The Nighthawks have long enjoyed wonderful touring and recording relationships with some of the best and brightest names in roots and blues music. On their 1978 release, Jacks and Kings, they backed up such blues all-stars as Pinetop Perkins, Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson, Calvin Jones and Bob Margolin; and backed up John Hammond on his Hot Tracks album. The Nighthawks have toured with John Hammond, as well as John Lee Hooker, Elvin Bishop, Tracy Nelson and Eddie Hinton; and also played with such national treasures as Muddy Waters and Carl Perkins. Over the years, several other star artists have literally become de-facto “members” of the band at various times, including Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes and Bob Margolin.   

Recorded live at the Washington studios of Sirius XM Satellite Radio, the band’s last CD, Last Train to Bluesville, was a departure of sorts from their previous efforts. Stripped down and acoustic, Last Train to Bluesville resonated with music fans and the media alike with its honesty, passion and soul. The album features down-home versions of 10 blues classics from such artists as Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Slim Harpo, Chuck Berry, Sonny Boy Williamson and James Brown, among others. Recorded with the intimate feeling of a back-porch setting, Last Train to Bluesville bristles with all the energy of a live gig and the world-class performances Nighthawks fans from around the world have come to expect.        

In its review of the CD, The Washington Post declared, “If there were ever a question about how the Nighthawks keep their blues-rock sound fresh after nearly 40 years together, Last Train to Bluesville gives the answer…the new acoustic setting really suits the group. The crisp recording draws the group’s instrumentation into the spotlight…a recording that stands out in the band’s lengthy discography.”

International blues magazine Blues Revue said, “While these songs have been staples of The Nighthawks set list for decades, the sparkling acoustic arrangements provide them, and the band, with a new lease on life…accurately captures the dynamics of one of roots music’s long lasting, dependable and often unsung outfits. Long may they fly.”

Blues Blast Magazine called it “Ten tracks of incredible acoustic blues, all the more impressive given that it was recorded as a live session in the studio rather than pieced together of tracks and parts. The crystal clear recording would showcase any flaws – instead what comes through is a tight, professional acoustic set that truly showcases The Nighthawks’ musicianship.”

And the Blog Critics website summed up its review by stating, “…this is a superb document of the intuitive interplay between seasoned veterans who still find sheer, unbridled joy in making music together. It simply doesn’t get much better than this!”

New Release - Tempered In Fire - Lisa Mills - Review


With a US release date of October 18, 2011 this may already be on the street. I just received a copy of the new Lisa Mills recording Tempered In Fire. If you don't know Lisa she is a Mississippi born vocalist moved to Glastonbury and now residing back in Mobile, Alabama. You can definitely hear the UK influence on her southern roots. This cd has some really strong tunes executed very well by Lisa. The overall tone of the cd is a crossover between the R&B, Blues and country. She has done particularly well renditions of Wet Willie's "Keep on Smilin' and Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine" as well as a few tunes by others and originals as well.

Rooftop Recordings - David Philips

David’s new record (Rooftop Recordings) made it to the LUISTERPAAL (listening pole) of RADIO 6 in Holland.

The disc also entered the EURO AMERICANA CHART for October. The Euro Americana Chart is compiled by DJs, journalists, retailers, promotors and other people who are interested in Americana music from all over Europe. Everything I Do - Maurice John Vaughn & Fred Brousse


Vaughn, now 43, began his musical career while attending Juliet Low grade school on Chicago's South Side, playing drums, guitar and clarinet in the school band. He moved on to playing in various Top 40 cover bands. In 1968, he concentrated on the saxophone in order to join a local jazz trio. "They wanted a sax player, and I wanted to be Li the band," Vaughn recalls. He made his very first recording with an R&B group called the Chosen Few for Chi-Sound records in 1976. But soon after that the saxophone jobs were drying up, so Vaughn turned his attention to his guitar. Echoes of Albert King, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker and B.B. King can be heard in Vaughn's unique guitar style< In 1979, Vaughn entered the blues world after Phil Guy — brother of legendary guitarist Buddy Guy and a guitarist and bandleader in his own right — sat in with Vaughn's soul band which was playing behind Professor Eddie Lusk. After the gig, Guy invited Vaughn and band to join him for an upcoming Canadian tour. Soon Vaughn was playing with the top Chicago blues talents: Luther Allison, Son Seals (with whom he toured Europe) and A.C. Reed (whose Alligator recording, PM IN THE WRONG BUSINESS (AL 4757), features Vaughn on guitar). Maurice's musical vision and self-guided career helped land him with Alligator Records. In 1986, Maurice played, produced, recorded and financed his own solo album. He was, as he says, "tired of waiting in line for producers to call," so he formed his own Reecy label, and released GENERIC BLUES ALBUM. On the strength of this recording, Alligator president Bruce Iglauer invited Vaughn into the studio to cut a track for THE NEW BLUEBLOODS (AL 7707) compilation album. Alligator then worked out a distrib­ution deal for GENERIC BLUES ALBUM (AL 4763) with Maurice, reissuing the album with an addi­tional track. Guitar World declared, "Blues album of the year!" As well as writing up-to-the-minute urban blues songs, Vaughn loves to perform. A typical Vaughn show involves a close rapport with the audience. His style is comfortable and inclusive. He'll talk to the audi­ence as if they were all sitting in his living room. "You won't just see me stand there with my guitar," Vaughn says. One way he has learned to keep his live show fast paced and always fun is by playing for kids. Vaughn often plays in schools for children who have never heard blues music. He'll update Sonny Boy Williamson's "Help Me" to include lyrics about homework. "Kids have short attention spans, so I need to keep things fun and exciting or I'll lose them. I always keep this in mind when I'm performing in clubs." Vaughn loves to travel and is constantly updating his sound and style. His abundant talent and experience place him at the forefront of the contemporary blues world. His innovative songs, passionate singing, blis­tering guitar playing and romping saxophone mark IN THE SHADOW OF THE CITY as a visionary work from a true blues original. Alabama Slim


Slim grew up playing in juke joints in Alabama and moved to New Orleans in the ‘60s. Since joining MM, his music has been felt at performances in the States and abroad and he has recorded The Mighty Flood, an album featuring Slim & blues guitarist Little Freddie King.

Alabama Slim was born Milton Frazier in Vance, Alabama on March 29, 1939. His father worked building trains at the Pullman plant and his mother did domestic work. In their home, they had a Victrola and a boxful of 78s- this is where Slim fell in love with the Blues of Bill Broonzy and Lightnin’ Hopkins.

“I grew up listening to the old blues since I was a child. I spent summers with my grandparents who had a farm. Them old folks would get to moanin’ while they worked, and I just started moanin’ with them. That’s where I learned to sing. When I got grown I formed a band and we played little juke joints in the 50s and 60s. In ‘65, I came to New Orleans after hurricane Betsy. Got me a job with a moving company and then one making cooking oil. My cousin Freddie King was drinking hard in those days, and I was too. We jammed every once in awhile. By the time the 80s rolled around I was not doing much but Freddie always checked on me. By the 90s I got myself together and we have been the best of friends ever since, tighter than brothers really; there is not a day that goes by when we do not speak or see each other.” - Alabama Slim

When MMRF founder Tim Duffy, first met Slim, he recalled, “I met Alabama Slim in New Orleans while visiting Bluesman Little Freddie King. Slim is a towering man, close to seven feet tall. He was very well spoken and dressed in an impeccable tailored suit. He told me he was an old friend of Freddie’s and was originally from Huntsville, Alabama. I told him if he ever got back there soon, that he should call me and I will get him into a great recording studio up there.”

New Orleans drummer Wacko Wade introduced Music Maker to New Orleans Blues guitar patriarch Little Freddie King in the late 90s and he and Freddie and Alabama have since been performing with Music Maker. Upon losing all of their possession in the floodwater of Hurricane Katrina, Alabama and Freddie settled in Dallas, TX in an apartment complex and spent most of their days working up old and new songs. Soon after, they visited producer/drummer Ardie Dean and recorded a session. Impressed by Slim’s voice and Freddie’s guitar work that danced and followed Slim wherever he went, Tim Duffy asked the two to come to NC to record. Slim and Freddie visited Music Maker that December and between fellow New Orleans musicians Slewfoot and Carrie B., they cut The Mighty Flood.

Maxwell Street - Studebaker John


John Grimaldi, better known by his stage name Studebaker John (born November 5, 1952, Chicago) is an American blues guitarist and harmonica player. He is a representative of the Chicago blues style.
Studebaker John's father was an amateur musician, and he played early in life at the Maxwell Street flea market. Grimaldi began playing harmonica at age seven. In the 1970s he put together his band, the Hawks, and worked as a construction worker while recording and performing on the side. He recorded extensively for Blind Pig Records in the 1990s. Grimaldi counts Hound Dog Taylor as the reason he began playing slide guitar.[1] Atom Egoyan choose three of John's songs for his 1993 film Calendar, and included two songs in his 1994 film Exotica.

Tut Taylor Instrument Collection - II


Ok Ok...I'm a gear head but I just find this stuff really interesting... and the fact that it's Tut Taylors!

Tut Taylor (November 20, 1923) is an American bluegrass musician.

Taylor played banjo and mandolin as a child, and began playing dobro at age 14, learning to use the instrument with a distinctive flat-picking style. Taylor was a member of The Folkswingers in the 1960s, who released three LPs; he recorded his debut solo effort in 1964. Later in the 1960s, he played with the Dixie Gentlemen and in John Hartford's Aero-Plain band.

Taylor became a local Nashville, Tennessee fixture. In 1970, he co-founded the instrument shop GTR there, soon after releasing another solo album. He also co-founded the Old Time Pickin' Parlor, a Nashville venue noted for performances of old-time music, as well as Tut Taylor's General Store.

In a March, 1992 interview, Neil Young reported having bought Hank Williams' Martin D-28 Guitar from Tut Taylor.

At the Grammy Awards of 1995, he was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album for his work on The Great Dobro Sessions with Jerry Douglas.

Leslie West is Back - 1st Public Appearance


Leslie lit up faces around the world when he made his scheduled appearance at the Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp at Gibson Studios on August 13, 2011 in New York, just 2 months after losing his leg in a near fatal medical emergency. Snatch That Thing - Macavine Hayes


Macavine Hayes was born in Tampa, Florida on June 3rd 1943. His family farmed and he was the oldest of 5 sisters and 5 brothers. He remembers, “There was always something to do down on the farm, we listened to the radio and got up on the back porch and played the music of Chuck Berry and Jimmy Reed.”

In the 60s he met Guitar Gabriel playing on the streets of Tampa. He followed his new friend back to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. “Gabe taught me how to experience the road, sleep outside, go to some gals house and spend the night sometimes. Go to church on Sunday, we always carried nice suits and shoes. We would look good. We did a lot of travelin’. We went to Atlanta down to Augusta and all through Florida. We played at juke joints and lay a hat down. Gabe was a free spirit and taught me that you can go anywhere you want to go. We ran a drink house together for years down on Claremont Street. Living with Gabe was not a hard life; you just had to drink all the time.

Bluesiana - DEMIAN BAND


Demian Dominguez is the most promising Blues/Rock artist ever to emerge from the Latin American, and Spanish cultures. His musicianship and virtuosity sounds so authentically Blues that you would think him a native of the Southern United States, rather than his native Argentina and current home in Barcelona, Spain. Not since the British invasion of the late sixties have we seen a guitarist/vocalist outside the U.S. so adroit at interpreting this indigenous American music and this is amply demonstrated on Demian Band's newest CD release, "Tattoo'd Fish". The Blues may have originated in the U.S., but clearly it now belongs to the world!

A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Demian has been devoted to his music and his musical career since the age of 12. At the young age of
15 he achieved a unique opportunity, and received excellent reviews, when he was chosen as the opening artist for Jimmie Vaughan, Los Lobos and Roy Rogers at Huracan Stadium in Buenos Aires, in a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Demian cultivated his artistry in the Buenos Aires music scene, sharing the stage with well-known Argentine musicians such as Alejandro Lerner, Ricardo Mollo (Divididos), Pappo, Jorge Pinchevsky, Pappo, Willy Quiroga (Vox Dei), Alejandro Medina (Manal), Hector Starc, Walter Sidoti (Patricio Rey y Los Redonditos De Ricota), and others, culminating in his being awarded the ?Contribution to Blues? award from the General San Martin Theatre of Buenos Aires. In 1997, MTV aired a 60 minute special about Demian, entitled ?MTV Outside? (?MTV Afuera?). Subsequently, he wrote the music for a Toyota TV spot, played nightclubs and concerts throughout Argentina, performed live guest spots on radio, and recorded two successful solo albums with Demian Band until he moved to Barcelona, Spain in 2002.

In Barcelona Demian reformed Demian Band and frequently appeared with world renowned Blues guitarist/singer Bernard Allison and international Rock legend Elliot Murphy while performing in prominent European clubs and Blues festivals. In 2007 he recorded a DVD, produced by Bad Music and the Barcelona Blues Society, in the legendary Sala Apolo de Barcelona, and followed this with a tour in Germany in 2008. Demian?s previous successful CD, "Devil by My Side", featured Fernando Tejero on keyboards, and Bernard Allison on slide guitar and vocals on "If You Say You Love Me." The CD received wide critical and popular acclaim in both the U.S. and Europe, reaching #1 on the Blues radio charts in the U.S. In addition to the extraordinary talents of Demian, on his latest and 5th CD release, "Tattoo'd Fish", Demian Band consists of the masterly bass and keys of Tito Bonacera and the driving percussion of drummer Roger Serrahima. "Tattoo'd Fish" cooks with Demian Band's usual high-energy and Demian's signature blistering intensity, and combines original tunes with new arrangements of classics from the traditional Blues repertoire.

Southside Shuffle - The 24th Street Wailers Band


On the surface, they may appear to be fresh-faced college kids – but don’t let that, or the title of their recent release, Dirty Little Young’uns fool you. The 24th Street Wailers are a group of experienced, driven and academically trained musicians full of piss and vinegar with energy to spare.

Known for their funky, danceable and often hilarious live performances the band has played most of the joints in their home town of Toronto: Grossman’s, the Silver Dollar Room, the Rex, Hugh’s Room and assorted pubs and bars. In 2010, after only one year together as a band, The 24th Street Wailers made waves in the tight-knit blues community by winning the Toronto Blues Society talent search, and performing at festivals such as The South Side Shuffle, The Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival, The Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival, the Toronto Blues Society’s 25th anniversary party.

The 2011 release of their first full-length CD Dirty Little Young’uns brought them to more prestigious festival stages including the Frankford Island Blues festival, Lighthouse Blues Festival, Summerfolk Festival , and the Dutch Mason Blues Festival. Most notably, however is that The 24th Street Wailers were the only English band to be a part of and win both prizes of the Festiblues International du Montreal and Prize of the Bourse Air Transat /Blues Sur Seine, the prize being a coveted headline spot at the Blues-Sur-Seine Festival in France in 2011. Shortly after its release, Dirty Little Young’uns debuted at number three in Canada and number eight over all on the Roots Music Report, was number 16 on the DAWG FM top twenty charts where it stayed for several months and was the featured “Blues Breaker of the Week” on Dan Aykroyd’s House of Blues Radio Hour.

Driven by Halifax born lead singer and powerhouse drummer Lindsay Beaver, whose tough exterior is matched by even tougher drumming and original innuendo filled lyrics, the quartet features Beaver’s husband Mike Archer on bass, songwriter Emily Burgess, who writes half of the material, on guitar and Jon Wong on saxophone. Their music is innovative; Dirty Little Young’uns is 13 tracks comprised of original material from each member — a record that begins with a raunchy shuffle in the title track, and ends with a stunning emotional and soulful acoustic song, “Turn To You”.

Living together in a little house on 24th Street in Etobicoke, near where they all met while pursuing bachelor degrees in music, the 24th Street Wailers are a band in every sense of the word – a team who eat, sleep and breathe for their craft. They are friends first – a trait that is obvious during their live performances as they appear to be having as much, if not more fun playing together as the audience has while watching and listening to them.

Ain't No Sunshine - Brian And The Bluestorm


From its conception in early 2010, Brian and the Bluestorm has been packing them in everywhere they go.

With the arrival of the ‘BACK ON TRACK’ album featuring their own compositions and the many high-profile shows they have done, this band has proven over and over again that they are force to be reckoned with.

Lead vocalist Brian Tyler is armed with a charisma and vocal power that brings audiences to their feet at every show. ‘Electric’ Pete Laliberté brings a true blues style of guitar-playing and an attitude that will captivate and entertain any blues connoisseur in any crowd. Jean-Pierre Belanger brings the bass guitar to a new level-playing a right-handed bass left-handed and upside-down. Jean Patrick Blain offers a very solid, authentic and interesting beat that ensures a strong, comfortable rhythm for the rest of the band to follow.

From her home in Finland, she has ventured out to captivate audiences throughout Europe and recorded albums in places as far flung as her own Seasound Studio in Helsinki and the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Acclaimed for her slide guitar playing abilities, keen songwriting and smooth vocal delivery, Lyytinen is committed to a life of music. And, as her newest release Voracious Love shows, she continues to develop and hone her craft.

Change Is Gonna Come - Mike Farris


Mike Farris (b. ca. 1968) is an American musician. He was the founder and lead singer of Nashville, Tennessee group Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies, but has been a solo act since 2001. He has put out 2 studio releases as well as a one live record as Mike Farris and the Roseland Rhythm Revue as well as a charity EP as Mike Farris and the Cumberland Saints. His music is diverse but tends to be rooted in early American gospel and blues.
Farris's parents divorced when he was eleven years old; he began using drugs and alcohol from an early age, and almost died from an overdose before he was 21 years old. He recovered and went on to form the group Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies in 1990; they released three major-label albums and had sustained success on the U.S. rock charts in the 1990s. After their breakup, Farris sang with SCW, Peaceful Knievel and for a time fronted Double Trouble, the backing band for Stevie Ray Vaughan. Farris became a practicing Christian and rejected drugs and alcohol, and released his first solo album in 2002. 2007 saw him release his second solo effort, the strongly Southern-influenced Salvation in Lights, on INO/Columbia Records. Farris played SXSW and Creation Festival later in 2008.[5] The live “Sunday Night Shout!” was recorded live at the Station Inn in Nashville TN on October 12, 2008 but was a digital only release. On April 14, 2009, Farris released SHOUT! Live, as Mike Farris & the Roseland Rhythm Revue, featuring the McCrary Sisters that was recorded over 4 nights at his Station Inn residency.

In May 2010, after the devastating floods of Middle Tennessee, Mike gathered up some "A" list Nashville musicians to record a charity EP entitled The Night the Cumberland Came Alive. Recorded in 6 hours at the historic Downtown Presbyterian Church the six song EP consisted of music inspired by the early jug bands and pre-war era of roots gospel, blues and country. Dubbed Mike Farris and the Cumberland Saints, proceeds of the project were donated to benefit the victims of the flood via the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The Cumberland Saints line up featured: Sam Bush, Ketch Secor and Gill Landry from Old Crow Medicine Show, Bryon House, Kenny Vaughan along with members of the Roseland Rhythm Revue and the McCrary Sisters.

The end of 2010 saw Mike begin recording of his follow-up to Salvation in Lights with Kevin McKendree and other members of Delbert McClinton's band. Release is scheduled for mid 2011.
