Los Angeles, CA --- Walter Trout is the beating heart of
the modern blues rock scene, respected by the old guard, revered by the young
guns, and adored by the fans who shake his hand after the show each night.
After five decades in the game, Trout is a talismanic figure and part of the
glue that bonds the blues community together, at a time when the wider world
has never been so divided. He’s also the only artist with the vision, talent
and star-studded address book to pull off a project on the scale of We’re
All In This Together. “It was quite a piece of work to get this record
together,” he admits. “But I guess I have a lot of friends, y’know…?”
Before you even hear a note, We’re All In This
Together has your attention. Drafting fourteen A-list stars – including Joe
Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayall and Randy Bachman – and writing an
original song for each, Trout has made the most tantalizing album of the year,
and found solace after a run of solo albums that chronicled his near-fatal
liver disease of 2014. “Now was the right time for this record,” he says. “Battle
Scars [2015] was such an intense piece of work, written with tears coming
down my face. I needed a break from that, to do something fun and
light-hearted. This album was joyous for me.”
Scan the credits of We’re All In This Together and
you’ll find nods to every twist and turn of Trout’s electrifying backstory.
There’s keys man and long-time friend Skip Edwards, who came up on the same
early-’70s New Jersey circuit where Trout cut his teeth as the precocious lead
guitarist for Wilmont Mews. There’s organ wizard Deacon Jones, the West Coast
bandleader who brought a twenty-something Trout into the orbit of blues titans
like John Lee Hooker and Big Mama Thornton. “Deacon sorta discovered me when I
moved to LA in the ’70s,” reflects Trout. “So I owe him.”
Trout also welcomes a fistful of compadres from recent
all-star project Supersonic Blues Machine, in the form of Warren Haynes, Robben
Ford and Eric Gales. Then there’s John Mayall: the ageless British blues-boom
godfather who hired a troubled Trout for the Bluesbreakers in 1985 and now
blows harp on “Blues For Jimmy T.” “Am I proud to call myself a
former Bluesbreaker?” Trout reflects. “Yeah, of course. What a credential. That
is a very exclusive club, and I know that when I’m gone, that’s gonna be one of
the big things that they’ll remember me for: that I was a Bluesbreaker for five
years.”
Since he struck out alone in 1989, Trout’s solo career
has been every bit as celebrated. Touring tirelessly and spitting out classic
albums that include 1990’s flag-planting Life In The Jungle, 1998’s
breakthrough Walter Trout and 2012’s politically barbed Blues For The
Modern Daze, he’s won international acclaim and enjoyed ever-growing sales
in a notoriously fickle industry. Years on the road have also brought him tight
friendships, as evidenced by 2006’s cameo-fuelled Full Circle album and
this year’s unofficial sequel, We’re All In This Together. “The new
album was originally gonna be called Full Circle Volume 2,” notes Trout,
“but I wanted to make the title a positive statement in this time of
madness.”
In another departure, whereas Full Circle saw each
guest visit the studio to track their part, the advance of recording technology
in the intervening decade meant Trout’s collaborators on We’re All In This
Together were able to supply their contributions from afar. “In the studio,
it was the core band of me, Sammy Avila [keys], Mike Leasure [drums] and Johnny
Griparic [bass] on every cut, with Eric Corne producing,” he explains, “and
then, for most of the tracks, people sent us their parts. But it’s very hard to
tell we’re not in the studio together. If you listen to the Warren Haynes
track, when we get into that guitar conversation on the end – it sounds like
we’re looking each other right in the face, y’know?”
They say you can judge a man by the company he keeps. If
that’s the case, then We’re All In This Together is further proof of
Walter Trout’s position at the hub of the blues scene. This is the sound of an
artist not just getting by with a little help from his friends, but positively
thriving, on an album that is sure to light another rocket under his blooming
late career. “I’m 66 years old,” considers Trout, “but I feel like I’m in the
best years of my life right now. I feel better than I have in years physically.
I have more energy. I have a whole different appreciation of being alive, of
the world, of my family, of my career. I want life to be exciting and
celebratory. I want to dig in. I want to grab life by the balls and not let go,
y’know…?”

Eric Johnson Hits The Road To Support First All Acoustic Solo Album: EJ
Run Begins In Johnson’s Home
Town Of Austin, Texas on January 15
Austin,
TX – Eric Johnson will hit the road next month in support of his first acoustic
solo album titled EJ. Thirty years after his
breakthrough solo release 'Tones' brought him national recognition, the new
release showcases nine original compositions and four covers. Johnson
shares, "Ever since I was young, I've played piano and acoustic guitar in
my private life. This type of music has always been a part of me, but I
never showcased it on any kind of bigger level, like a full acoustic record.
With EJ, I just decided to be more honest with myself and everybody, and show
more of my personal side."
Johnson,
long known for his painstaking approach to making records, used a much more
immediate attack for the self-produced EJ. "Almost all of that material
was cut live," Johnson explains. "Some of the songs I actually sang
and played at the same time - just live in the studio. Recording this way gave
it more of an honest realism and organic emotion. Especially on the acoustic,
you just have to get in there and play."
On
the original compositions "Wonder," "Fatherly Downs," and
"All Things You Are," Johnson frames his voice with his prized 1980
Martin D-45, a gift from his late father. He plays the steel-string on his
superlative instrumentals "Once Upon a Time in Texas," "All
Things You Are," and "Song for Irene." He conjures the
beautiful, pensive tones of "Serinidad," another original
instrumental, on a Ramirez nylon-string guitar. A spirited steel-string
arrangement of Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" rounds out the
solo guitar tracks.
Johnson
recasts another Simon and Garfunkel favorite, "Scarborough Fair," for
voice and piano, and plays piano on the originals "Water Under the
Bridge," "November," and "Wrapped in a Cloud," an
ensemble track with acoustic bass, cello, drums, and percussion. In a move
that's sure to surprise his fans, Johnson rearranged Jimi Hendrix' "One
Rainy Wish" for guitar and piano, capping the performance with a
jazz-inflected piano solo. Rounding out the record is Johnson and guest guitarist
Doyle Dykes' superlative cover of Les Paul and Mary Ford's 1951 classic,
"The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise."
Throughout
his career, Johnson has approached music as a healing force, a way to enhance a
listener's consciousness and conjure joy and inspiration. "That's what
I've always appreciated most about other artists," he says. "Some
artists inspire us to wake up and get back to the clarity of consciousness.
With this record, I'm trying to do that too, because I appreciate it so much in
other people."

Relaunch of the Squirrel Nut Zippers - 2016 Concert Tour - Marquee Theatre Tempe, Arizona - Review
I saw the "New" Squirrel Nut Zippers last night and the show was wild. I had mentioned to a few friends that I was going to see the Squirrel Nut Zippers last night and they either looked at me with a puzzled look or they knew exactly what I was talking about. What the hell is a Squirrel Nut Zipper... well, that I can tell you. Jimbo says, "Nut Zippers" is a southern term for a variety of old bootleg moonshine, and the band's name comes from a newspaper account which related the story of a highly intoxicated man who climbed a tree one night, refusing to come down even after authorities arrived. The article's headline read: "Squirrel Nut Zipper." Now what does that have to do with a band and who are they? This band is absolute energy with as much animation as a 30's cartoon and as crazy wild as a drunk squirrel. Mathus is a terrific performer and this band of high level New Orleans style jazz musicians put as much energy into entertaining as they do playing their respective instruments... and that is a bunch!
Anyone who reads my blog regularly knows that I have really become intoxicated with the music of Mississippi native, Jimbo Mathus, since first seeing him with Buddy Guy in the early 2000's. Mathus first formed the Squirrel Nut Zippers in the 90's with Mathus' now ex wife, Katharine Whalen, along with Tom Maxwell, Chris Phillips, Don Raleigh and Ken Mosher. Due to other projects and the breakup of Jimbo and Whalen, the project had gone idle. I've got to tell you I'd never seen a SNZ show nor had I ever really heard their music except in passing one weekend about 10 years ago. When I saw that they were playing in town and that Jimbo was leading the pack, I decided to check it out. The new lineup is Jimbo Mathus — vocals, guitar, slide guitar, tenor banjo, trombone, piano; Chris Phillips — percussion, contraption kit, drums; Ingrid Lucia — vocals; Tamara Nicholai — bass; Justin Carr aka Dr. Sick - fiddle, banjo and saw; Charlie Halloran — trombone; Kevin Louis; Dave Boswell; Henry Westmoreland - saxophone; Kris Takorski on keys; and Kevin O'Donell.
This was a packed house of people who mostly knew every word of every song. They weren't obnoxious singing over top of the band but it was apparent when the lead vocalist would step back from the mic that the crowd picked up the slack. Jimbo Mathus is the ultimate showman and blows out every bit of energy that he has on stage. Comes dressed in a wool band suit, in dark burgundy, complete with gold trim with a full vest and terrific boots and a derby and a wild black and white striped shirt. This outfit looks like it was bought right off of the back of a musician from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (sans the policeman's style bill hat). Ingrid Lucia is dressed in a period black dress with a lacy "flounce" and openings down to the waist. This show is pure vaudeville with Jimbo taking every opportunity to throw sly one liners in the very brief moments between songs and the music is punk. I mean high energy, raw and irreverent! I managed to get the play list so here it is:
1) Good Enough For Grandad
2) Club Limbo
3) Put A Lid On It
4) Got My Own Thing Now
5) Blue Angel
6) La Fitte's
7) It Ain't You
8) Suits (video below)
9) Ghost of Stephen Foster
10) My Drag
11) Wished For You
12) Prince Nez
13) Bad Businessman
14) --- Hell
15) Memphis Exorcism
16) Plenty More
They also played a 2 song encore consisting of:
17) Bedlam Ballroom
18) I Found A New Baby
One of my favorites of the evening was the last song of the set, Plenty More, with lyrics like "They say all the boys are monsters, All the girls are whores, So when you lose the one you love,There's always plenty more". Mathus, who delivers the song with such sincerity, gleans in joy with his eyes wide (Think Mantan Moreland , almost bugging)
and a mischievous grin revealing his famous gold tooth on delivering the punch line.
Mathus, the primary writer for all of the band's material is a veritable jukebox of musical knowledge, able to play in most any style. Last night I saw him playing with rich jazz chords and rag time strumming as well as neatly articulated riffs and fluid jazz runs. Lucia's voice is solid yet unusual, adding to the band's "tricks" and complimenting their strengths. Each of the horn players took a number of solo's bringing out the flavor of New Orleans embedded deep in the roots of this band and Carr's strength on fiddle both in bowing and plucking is a showcase of it's own. He also strums it like a banjo, thumps it for impact and lets not forget his featured saw playing. Yes, this band has it all.
With a remastered twentieth anniversary edition of Hot slated for release July 29 on Hollywood Records and a reunion tour to follow, Billboard is exclusively debuting "The Puffer," a never-before-released bonus track written with the late Stacy Guess. The song, which is named for an old steam train, has a Duke Ellington feel and is "kind of a creepy and very typical Zippers," says Mathus.
Listen to Unreleased "Puffer" Jimbo also notes that he's working on new material in the Squirrel Nut Zipper motif so likely we will be looking for a new release altogether in the near future!

Jimbo Mathus is a regular southern gentleman, a great musician and songwriter, a real card, and appears to be humbled and appreciative of every single face in the crowd and every clap of the hand.
I am extremely happy that I made the choice to go see this esoteric band of gypsies weave their magic. They are a fun group of talented musicians and their show is an absolute blast!
Bravo!

Washington, MA -- Thursday, August 20, 2015 -- Legendary folk music icon Arlo Guthrie continues his epic journey across North America this September 2015 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the event that inspired his seminal song, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree". A musical monologue running more than 18 minutes, "Alice's Restaurant" has become a Thanksgiving holiday anthem to families around the world and it all originates from Guthrie's experience on Thanksgiving in 1965. Kicking off the tour in Nashville, TN (City Winery: Sept. 25 - 27, 2015), Guthrie will perform his most prominent work in its entirety each night on the tour, as well as selections from various full-length studio albums he's released since his debut, Alice's Restaurant (1967).
Guthrie tours in more than 60 markets over the next eight months, and commemorates the actual 50th Anniversary with his annual headlining performance at New York City's Carnegie Hall (November 28, 2015). On the October and November 2015 shows, Arlo's daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie -- a singer-songwriter with a lauded career in her own right -- will open each concert. Please see all confirmed shows listed below and on risingsonrecords.com.
Folk songs enduring many decades of change only become classics when storylines remain just as relevant today as they were when originally composed. "Alice's Restaurant" is of this ilk; it's now weaved into the fabric of American society. Fans have embraced "Alice's Restaurant" as part of their annual Thanksgiving tradition, but also view it as one of the more pronounced "anti-stupid" rally songs. Every year, Arlo receives handfuls of letters from Vietnam vets and soldiers currently at war expressing their heartfelt connection to the song. Today, times are eerily similar to the mid-60's, with unpopular wars being fought far away from home, and soldiers finding ways to cope. Music is often the best medicine to soothe the soul. However listeners interpret the quintessential tune, we can be rest assured that people of all different walks of life come together singing that famous chorus, "You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant...".
"I didn't think I was gonna live long enough to have to learn 'Alice's Restaurant' again," Arlo Guthrie says with a smile. "It was a quirky kinda thing to begin with. Nobody writes an 18-minute monologue expecting fame and fortune. The initial success of the song really took me by surprise more than anyone else. The fact that I have contended with it for five decades either by having to learn it again or by not doing it, has been an interesting balancing act. I'm surely looking forward to it being a centerpiece of my repertoire for the 50th anniversary tour."
"Alice's Restaurant's" hilarious account of actual events that precluded Arlo Guthrie from military service (1966) became a platinum selling record (1967) and full-length motion picture (1969) at the outset of his renowned career. As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the lengthiest hit single in music history, Arlo once again performs it live. Due to its length, Arlo has only added the complete "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" to his touring menu on the 10-year anniversaries.
For the last five decades, Arlo has carried on the Guthrie family legacy of sharing timeless stories and unforgettable classics to audiences far and wide. "The Alice's Restaurant 50th Anniversary Tour" brings together an ensemble of fine musicians never to grace the stage together at one time. Arlo's deft band includes Terry Hall (drums), Bobby Sweet (guitar, vocals), Darren Todd (bass), and his son, Abe Guthrie (keyboards). Each show is curated with an awe-inspiring light show created specifically for this tour by 44 Designs, Inc., along with previously unseen images from the Guthrie archives. More than 75,000 photos have recently been digitized, and selections will be projected during the evening.
For the dedicated lovers of "Alice's Restaurant", they'll be happy to know the Old Trinity Church is still around. Arlo bought it over 20 years ago and renamed it "The Guthrie Center at the Old Trinity Church". He runs his non-profit foundation from the building, and it's his hope that it'll continue to be of service to the local community.
On "Alice's Restaurant" becoming such a cultural phenomenon, Arlo says, "Well, I've always loved good stories. And I've loved telling tall tales. Why people enjoy it is beyond me. I haven't sung 'Alice' for years and people still keep coming to the gigs. 'Alice' has taken on a life of its own and become attached to Thanksgiving. If I had to guess though, maybe because it's a story about a little guy against a big world."
Don't miss Arlo Guthrie as he tours in a city near you, performing one of America's greatest musical treasures! Below is a list of the announced tour dates, and additional shows will be added. Stay up to date on risingsonrecords.com
