Elvin Bishop/Janiva Magness/Steve Riley headline Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Fest. May 25-26, 2013

ELVIN BISHOP, JANIVA MAGNESS, SMOKIN’ JOE KUBEK PLUS
GRAMMY WINNERS STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS
HEADLINE 24th ANNUAL
SIMI VALLEY CAJUN & BLUES MUSIC FESTIVAL,
SATURDAY-SUNDAY, MAY 25-26

Los Angeles area’s largest Cajun and Blues festival, held over Memorial Day weekend, features two stages, a Mardi Gras parade, kids’ stages, crafts and dozens of food booths

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — The 24th annual Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Festival will rock over Memorial Day weekend, May 25-26, at Rancho Santa Susanna Community Park, 5005 Los Angeles Ave., in Simi Valley. The festival features two full stages for each of its musical genres. Music will proceed non-stop each day from 12 noon until 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $20 (adults 13+) and $15 (children) and are available online at http://www.simicajun.org or at the gate. Parking is ample and free. Fast-moving California Hwy. 118 (Ronald Reagan Freeway) can be taken to the Stearns Street exit; the festival is four blocks south.
Co-headlining the blues stage this year, Alligator recording artist Janiva Magness and Elvin Bishop will lead a Tribute to Finis Tasby.
Janiva Magness received the coveted 2009 Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer of the Year (she is the second woman to ever win this award; Koko Taylor was the first). She also won Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year for three years. She has received a total of 22 Blues Music Award nominations to date, including five nominations this year. Her album Stronger For It is her tenth.
Elvin Bishop, who will lead a tribute to ailing Texas bluesman Finis Tasby, a member of the Mannish Boys, with John Nemeth and Kid Anderson, began his career with the Butterfield Blues Band. He notched a #3 pop hit with the single “I Fooled Around and Fell in Love” in 1976. His latest recording (and 18th album) is the live Raisin’ Hell Revue on Delta Groove Records.
Meanwhile, on the Cajun stage, Rounder Records artists and two-time Grammy Award nominees and 2013 winner Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, will headline both Saturday and Sunday; Swampland star Teresa Russell, Southern California’s own Lisa Haley, Leroy Thomas & the Zydeco Roadrunners, David Sousa & the Zydeco Mudbugs, J Paul D. & the Zydeco Nubreeds and Andre Thierry & the Zydeco Magic will create a Louisiana-style fais-do-do. A sizeable dance floor will be built alongside the stage. The annual Mardi Gras Parade will take place both days at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, back at the blues stage (and festival goers are encouraged to go back and forth), other performers include the Mannish Boys with guests Curtis Salgado, Kevin Selfe, Peter Dammann, Otis Grand and Audrey Turner; Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King with guests Bob Corritore, Rand Chortkoff and Big Pete; Sugar Ray & the Bluetones, Andy T/Nick Nixon Band with Anson Funderbaugh; James Herman’s Back Porch Revue; and the Delta Groove Harp Blast.
The blues stage also presents two young blues up-and-comers, redefining the genre for a new generation: Nathan James & His Rhythm Scratchers and Kara Grainger. Nathan James plays his self-invented washboard guitar, harmonica and kazoo. His 2012 What You Make of It album was called “one of the most original blues CDs (and bands) to come along in a long time.” Of Australian-born Kara Grainger — soon to release her Delta Groove Records debut album — Nashville’s Tennessean newspaper noted, "There's a whole lot of Bonnie Raitt in (her songs) . . . Grainger's alternately throaty and honeyed voice floats over a . . . bed of bluesy accompaniment."

The festival has received national press accolades: “Everywhere you turned, there was something exciting happening. Put this on your 2013 festival calendar,” wrote Blue Revue editor Art Tipaldi, who made the trek from New England. The Blues Blast writer enthused, “I attend many venues and festivals throughout the year but the ones that seem to impress me the most are the ones that serve the community in some way. I highly recommend you put this on your calendar for next Memorial Day weekend.” And the music industry trade journal Hits added, “As the last strains of (Candye) Kane’s set rang in our ears, we left the grounds fully sated by music, food, drink and, as the saying goes, bon temps.”
This family-friendly event boasts a huge kids’ area with bouncers, rock walls. specialty acts, crafts and talent shows.
The festival boasts dozens of food booths featuring a variety of fare: authentic Cajun creations and Southern BBQ as well as multi-cultural cuisine. More than 100 craft booths and retailers will be scattered throughout the festival grounds.
Tickets may be obtained online at http://wl.flavorus.com/rotaryclubofsimisunrise/cajunbluesfestival
Support of the not-for-profit Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Music Festival has benefited dozens of local community, national and international organizations a list of which may be found at http://www.simicajun.org/2013/whobenefits.html.

Texas Cadillac - SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK BAND

Joe Kubek was raised in Irving, Texas, and while still a teenager was playing guitar in the band of the original Texas Cannonball, Freddie King. Kubek went on to forge his aggressive guitar style fronting his own band, and backing many legendary blues artists throughout the '70s and '80s, including Al "TNT" Braggs, Little Joe Blue, and others. Influenced by the hard-rocking blues of the '60s and '70s, Kubek's guitar playing smolders with the same fire that burned in the styles of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter, earning him the well-deserved nickname "Smokin' Joe." New Release: Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King "Close To The Bone"

SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK & BNOIS KING - "CLOSE TO THE BONE"

Featuring: Big Pete, Lynwood Slim, Bob Corritore, Shawn Pittman, Kirk Fletcher,
Fred Kaplan, Paul Size, Randy Chortkoff, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott.

Influenced by the hard-rocking blues of the '60s and '70s, Kubek's guitar playing smolders with the same fire that burned in the styles of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter, earning him the well-deserved nickname "Smokin' Joe."

Bnois King is a native of Monroe, Louisiana. His musical influences come from a generation earlier than Kubek's, with the smoother sounds of T-Bone Walker and B.B. King in evidence, along with some of the soulful and jazzier sounds of the 1950s and '60s. He was fronting his own band in the '80s when he first met Kubek backstage at someone else's gig. Together this unlikely pair forged a musical bond that has not only lasted the test of time, but continues to flourish. Joe's hard-edged guitar provides the perfect counter-balance for the jazzy guitar and deep blues vocals of Bnois. King serves to keep their music rooted in the tradition, while Kubek stretches out and provides an energy that has been thrilling audiences over the twenty-plus years of their partnership.

Produced by Randy Chortkoff and mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer and engineer David Z, "Close To The Bone" is a new spin on the Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King sound – it's their 'unplugged' release, played almost entirely on acoustic instruments. It allows their music to breath and flow, and displays some beautifully subtle interplay that might have been overlooked in another setting. But their inspired songwriting is one of the primary elements that sets them apart from the pack – the vast majority of the music on this CD is original. Smart, clever lyrics, toe-tapping grooves and interesting, memorable arrangements add up to one of the strongest releases to date from this duo. But of course they couldn't do it alone; some of the best in the business joined them in the studio, including fellow Delta Groove artists Big Pete, Lynwood Slim, Bob Corritore, Shawn Pittman, Kirk Fletcher, Hollywood Blue Flames' keyboard man Fred Kaplan, former Red Devils guitarist Paul Size, Randy Chortkoff on harmonica, and the rhythm section of Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott. With over two decades of experience together on stages and in studios around the world, and over a dozen major CD releases, Kubek and King bring the essence of Texas blues to Delta Groove.

"King's jazzy guitar work is the perfect foil to Kubek's more incendiary style. They are simply the best guitar tandem on the scene today." - Blues Revue Magazine

"Potent, undiluted 100-proof Texas blues honed to a razor's edge." – Guitar One

"Some really exceptional acoustic guitar blues...bound to solidify existing fans and win them new fans who enjoy a clean, clear stroke at acoustic blues." - Bman's Blues Report

Delta Groove artists: Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King - Close To The Bone - New Release Review

I have just received a copy of the newest release (available September 18, 2012), Close To The Bone, an "unplugged" recording by Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King. The talented blues duo has assembled a virtual "who's who" of contemporary blues artists for their fresh look at the blues including Randy Chortkoff, Bob Corritore, Lynwood Slim, Big Pete van der Pluijm, Kirk Fletcher, Shawn Pittman, Paul Size, Fred kaplan, Willie J. Campbell, Jimi Bott and jeff Scott Fleenor. Poor Boy Blues, the opening track, finds King singing accompanied by acoustic guitar. Can't Let Go not only adds Bott on drums but Fletcher and Size on acoustic guitars and Pittman on National Steel really playing some pretty hot acoustic riffs (on alternate channels). Keep Her Around gets the whole crew out with Campbell on bass, Chortkoff, van der Pluijm and Corritore on harmonnica's (opposite channels) and Size and Fletcher on guitars. This is likely the best track on the recording, a nice shuffle tune with smooth vocals from King, all the guitar greats playing in concert and the harp kings trading riffs. Get Out There And Get It is a subdued rocker again featuring great guitar work from Fletcher complimenting the duo. Yankin' My Chain is stripped down with only King and Kubeck ... a boogie track that shows what two men can without electricity... smooth vocals, hot riffs... very nice. Drowning In Red Ink is a soulful blues track along the lines of BB Broonzy. King sets the tone and Kaplan on piano adds a soulful solo, Campbell on bass beefs up the mix. There is some really exceptional acoustic guitar blues on this track thanks to Fletcher and smooth acoustic slide work by Kubek. Another particularly strong track. Corritore and Chortkoff are back dueling on No Good Could Come From This and both King and Kubek lay down some cool riffs on this track. Ordinary Man is another cool track and puts me in mind of an old Dave Bromberg blues track. Featuring Bott, Campbell and Fletcher the track takes a jazzy blues direction and sets a cool stage to feature all of the players. Another contender for best track. On Jump The Moon, Fletcher lays down some nice acoustic riffs and Kubek is back on acoustic slide giving the strings a great workout. Mama's Bad Luck Child is a simple straight forward blues track with Kubek on guitar, King on vocal and Slim on harp. This trio shows nice balance and solid skills. This is a strong departure from previous recordings by Kubek and King and one that is bound to solidify existing fans and win them new fans who enjoy a clean, clear stroke at acoustic blues.

Delta Groove signs Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King

DELTA GROOVE IS PROUD TO WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY
SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK & BNOIS KING

Delta Groove Music is extremely pleased to welcome the dynamic duo of Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnois King to the Delta Groove family. With over two decades of experience together on stages and in studios around the world, and over a dozen major CD releases, Kubek and King bring the essence of Texas blues to Delta Groove. Their debut release on Delta Groove is the all-acoustic “Close To The Bone”, and features such special guests as fellow Delta Groove artists Big Pete, Shawn Pittman, Kirk Fletcher, Randy Chortkoff, Bob Corritore, Hollywood Blue Flames keyboard man Fred Kaplan, former Red Devils guitarist Paul Size, and others.

Joe Kubek was raised in Irving, Texas, and while still a teenager was playing guitar in the band of the original Texas Cannonball, Freddie King. “I first saw them at the Sunset Social Club in Hollywood in the early ‘90s” says Delta Groove president Randy Chortkoff. “I loved what they were doing then, and even more so now. So I’m very excited to have them in the Delta Groove family. I’m blown away by their great songwriting and performances - a true Texas duo.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YES! WEEKLY PRESENTS THE 26TH ANNUAL CAROLINA BLUES FESTIVAL
26TH Year Brings Major National, Regional and Local Blues Artists to Greensboro

The Piedmont Blues Preservation Society has secured an all-star line-up of three national, one regional and
two local blues acts to perform at the 26th Annual Carolina Blues Festival, presented by YES! Weekly, under
the big tent at Festival Park in Downtown Greensboro, May 19.

Headlining the festival is Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnois King, two raucous, high–energy Texas roadhouse
bluesmen that perform blistering solos, irresistible shuffles and subtle ballads. Also appearing is Eric Gales, a
guitar phenom and dazzling soulful technician. Even though you might have seen him playing at the Hendrix
Experience held recently at the War Memorial Auditorium in March this left-handed virtuoso with the upsidedown
guitar is certainly no Hendrix clone. Our third national act is “The Georgia Songbird,” EG Kight, who has
been on tour opening for BB King. She’s a brassy, gutsy, blues singer and guitar player that can really belt out
the blues.

Joining our national acts is Mel Melton & the Wicked Mojos, a smoking’ hot Zydeco-Cajun band out of
Durham. They can really get the house up on its feet after they start cooking those Zydeco rhythms touched
with roadhouse blues. House of Dues is the PBPS Blues Challenge Band category winner performing New
Orleans Funk, Blues and R&B. Rounding out the line up is the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society’s Blues
Challenge Solo/Duo category winner, T.A. James, providing his blues guitar virtuosity with a modern take on
life and love.

Tickets are on sale now at www.piedmontblues.org, and can be purchased at the Carolina Theatre Box Office,
310 South Greene Street, (Mon-Fri hours are 12p to 5p), charged by phone, (336-333-2605), or online at
