Ben Rice & R B Stone - Out Of The Box - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Out Of The Box, from Ben Rice and RB Stone and it's a lot of fun. Opening with rock n roller, Hot Rod Mama this band is cranking right out of the chute. With solid vocals, revving guitars and slick slide from Rice and Stone and with Dave Melyan on drums, Joseph Barton on bass and Jimi Bott on trombone, this track smokes! Driving blues rocker, Hey Politician , has a great steady beat, CCR style vocals and super slide. It's the grinding guitar tone and the driving rhythm that gives The Swamp East Boogie it's electrifying feel. This is definitely one of my favorite tracks on the release with it's relentless push. Very cool! With it's taste of country, Crushin' On The Bartender has a strong radio appeal and the tasty slide work gives it just the right edge. Rich, warm hollow body tones fill the background of Train of Time, an easy set slow blues number featuring only lead vocal and slide. Wrappin...

Middle Mountain Music artist: RB Stone - Some Call It Freedom - New Release review

Image
I just received the newest release, Some Call It Freedom (some call it the blues) , from RB Stone and it's quite good. Opening with Hill Country Stomp , a hard driving boogie, RB Stone drives this track hard with a great lead riff and solid vocals. Joined by Terrance Houston on drums Stone really gets rockin' with grinding slide and harp work. Excellent opener! A bit more laid back and with a little funk, title track, Some Call It Freedom has a real cool groove. Stone again hits the slide but this time with more polish, Larry Van Loon on keys and a more contemporary sound. 35 Miles To Mobile is a piano driven track with a real rock bottom. I like Stone's guitar tone on rhythm and his slide sound is fat as it gets. Randy Coleman adds a solid bottom for yet another strong track. YoYo Lover has a light Cajun rhythm and cool piano riffs from Van Loon and Stone plays a more melodic guitar and harp solos making this the more prominent radio track to this point. Straight ...

Middle Mountain Music artist: RB Stone - Loosen Up! - New release review

Image
I just received the newest release (June 18, 2013), Loosen Up! , from RB Stone and if you like your blues with a lotta country kick, this may be your deal! Opening with High Horse , a regular foot stomper, Stone hits hard and fast featuring Tom Hambridge on drums, Robert Britt on lead guitars, Tommy McDonald on bass and Jefferson Jarvis on keys... these guys make fire. On Long Gone Lonesome Blues , Stone leads the way through a Whippin Post like track with intricate rhythmic drumming, saturated key work and weaving guitars. On title track, Loosen Up! , the guys do a straight up boogie. Jarvis takes a real nice piano solo complimenting strong vocals by Stone and Hambridge. God Heals You When You Cry is a real smooth blues ballad featuring super vocals by Stone and hot guitar riffs from Britt. Texas Drunk Tank Blues is a hard driving blues rocker over a basic Robert Johnson riff. Always a good bet! Stone also adds some key harp playing on this track adding intensity to an already s...

New Releases From David Egan, Kirsten Thien, Too Slim and the Taildraggers, and RB Stone

Share This: DAVID EGAN ~ DAVID EGAN Website Facebook Purchase & Listen "This cat looks like a cross between Dave Van Ronk and R. Crumb. He sings, plays and writes like Mose Allison in his prime and it feels unintentional, like it was something in the water as opposed to a mannered copy. He’s got loads of high tone songwriting credits but has chosen to pound the ivories in Shreveport roadhouses, not even bothering to kick it out in Nawlins. One of those heaviest-cats-you-never-heard-of kind of cats, this disc is a non-stop, no fat, great time. Easily as Americana as The Band, this set might color outside the lines but it isn’t outsider music. Killer stuff from start to finish, it’s time for this legend to take root." Midwest Record ...

Lonesome Traveller's Blues - RB Stone - New release review / video

Image
I just received a copy of the new release, Lonesome Traveller's Blues by RB Stone. The recording is made up of ten original tracks featuring Glen Kuykendall on guitar, Billy Crain on guitar, Jay Palmer on bass Ed Atkins on upright bass and both Spencer Strand and David Sappington on drums. Stone leads the charge with his vocal, acoustic guitar and harp attack. The recording is nicely done with strong guitar and harp parts featured throughout. There are both rural and city flavors and changes in moods taking the listener on a refreshing journey through the blues. Enjoy! Get Facebook support for your favorite band or venue - click HERE
