Big Song Music artist: Lisa Biales - Belle of the Blues - New Release review

Opening with and easy going blues number, title track Belle of the Blues, Lisa Biales shows why she is know for her clear voice, well complimented by Pat Bergeson on harp and Paul Hornsby on piano. Tommy Talton plays nice acoustic guitar riffs as a compliment but this song is really ready for airplay. Sad Sad Sunday is a slow blues ballad featuring Biales at her best on lead vocals and Tommy Talton on dobro. Bad Things has a "Summertime" feel with a light acoustic guitar backing. Adding instrumentation as it builds, Randall Bramblett adds organ, Ken Wynn guitar, Bill Stewart drums, Tommy Vickery bass and EG Kight backing vocals. Very nice. Mask, a primary 40's style blues ballad shows Biales in the heart of her style. Hornsby plays a "key" role in the backing on this track and Biales leads with very solid vocals. Graveyard Dead Blues has a cool dobro lead by Talton and EG Kight backs him nicely on acoustic. Biales is consistent with her vocals, strong and clear, and establishing a firm spot for herself in the void created by some of those who came before her. Baby Won't You Please Come Home has a really soft feel with early century authenticity. Paul Hornsby plays with certainty and feel. In My Girlish Days is a duet with EG Kight and features a tasty acoustic guitar solo from Talton. Peach Pickin' Mama, another track featuring Kight on vocals and Bergeson on harp features some of the coolest picking by Talton on the release. Black and White Blues has a moderate pace and a Bessie Smith style. Nice musical balance and clear vocals are the ticket. Trouble With A Capital "T" is a easy rocker with the largest group of players including Talton and Biales on acoustic guitar, Johnny Fountain on bass, Bill Stewart on drums, Ken Wynn on slide, Hornsby on piano, Gary Porter on tambourine and Kight on backing vocals. Wrapping the track is Bad Girl, the rockinest track on the release. Bramblett takes a nice B3 solo on the track and Wynn adds a stinging electric guitar solo as well. Duet vocals on this track are nicely complimented making this a nice closer for the release.

Singer Lisa Biales Is the "Belle of the Blues" on New CD from Big Song Music Due March 4

Singer Lisa Biales Is the Belle of the Blues on New CD from Big Song Music Due March 4

Latest Album Produced by EG Kight and Paul Hornsby Features Tommy Talton, Randall Bramblett and Bill Stewart with a Special Duet from Lisa and EG

OXFORD, OH – Singer Lisa Biales (pronounced “Bee-Alice”) announces a March 4 release date for her latest album, Belle of the Blues, on the Big Song Music label, with production by multi-Blues Music Award nominee EG Kight and legendary Southern Rock producer Paul Hornsby. The CD was recorded at Hornsby’s Muscadine Studio in Macon, Georgia, and features special guests Tommy Talton on guitar (Cowboy, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts) Randall Bramblett on Hammond B3 organ (Sea Level, Steve Winwood, Widespread Panic) and Bill Stewart on drums (Cowboy, Gregg Allman, Bonnie Bramlett). Talton’s contributions on the new album especially stand out, with his work on acoustic/electric guitar, electric/acoustic slide guitar and dobro.

EG Kight also produced Lisa’s acclaimed Just Like Honey album in 2012 and duets with Biales on one of the many musical highlights of the new disc, a cookin’ take on Memphis Minnie’s “In My Girlish Days.” EG also adds acoustic guitar and harmony vocals on a few other tracks and co-wrote several songs on Belle of the Blues. Co-producer Paul Hornsby provides his signature piano work throughout the new album.

“Recording with EG Kight and Paul Hornsby was more enjoyable the second time around,” recalls Biales about the sessions. “We’d been through the arduous task once before and became friends.  However, recording is not all gravy. I got anxious about one song and struggled with it for a while in the studio. Paul and EG suggested a break. When I returned, the lights were turned down, a single candle was lit, and a glass of wine was filled.  No longer feeling apprehensive, I sang ‘. . . and I wonder if I’m under some spell that you bring, when you make me, when you make me do . . . . ‘Bad Things.’”

Biales, who is known for her clear-as-a-bell singing voice, has been dubbed, fittingly, “Belle of the Blues.” The 11 songs on Belle of the Blues showcase a diverse set of material that feels right at home with Lisa’s passionate in-the-pocket vocals, which have a slant of southern sass to them.

“I have a secret wish to be the most desired back-up singer on the planet,” Biales admits. “Even though I know there are a few who already hold that title: Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Judith Hill and Lisa Fisher to name a few.  I loved singing back-up with EG on her songs, ‘Bad Girl,’ ‘Trouble with a Capital T’ and ‘Belle of the Blues.’ Working out the parts and hearing our voices resonate together was thrilling. So, it was an extra treat to have EG Kight join me on the Memphis Minnie duet, ‘In My Girlish Days’ where we trade verses and sing in harmony.”

Lisa has a special recollection about the recording of “Peach Pickin’ Mama,” too. “EG wanted me to play it for the band so they could get a feeling for the song,” she remembers. “We all sat around with guitars, and the jam that happened in the office with Tommy Talton, EG Kight, Tommy Vickery (bass), and Paul Hornsby playing his childhood guitar was priceless and is forever engrained in my memory as a precious moment in time.”

While Belle of the Blues has many kickin’, up-tempo songs, it has its share of ballads, as well. “I love singing sad songs,” Biales confesses. “The strong array of emotions that bubble up, and the connections I feel to people while singing them makes me realize my worth. I looked into the EG Kight songbook and found two songs that wrap around my soul like a big warm blanket, ‘Mask’ and ‘Sad Sad Sunday.’”

Another influence on Lisa Biales is Bessie Smith, who she calls “one of the greatest classic blues singers of the 1920s and someone I have grown to admire. It’s only fitting to have her presence on this recording with two songs: ‘Black and White Blues’ (a song written by blues historian Dalton Roberts as a tribute to Smith) and ‘Baby Won’t You Please Come Home."  ‘The Empress of the Blues’ meets ‘The Belle of the Blues.’’’

Over the past several years, Lisa Biales has been busy recording and singing the blues. Iconic movie director Francis Ford Coppola enjoyed one of her performances so much that he cast her in his film, “Twixt,” where Biales portrays a waitress named Ruth (and as a bonus, picks up a guitar and sings, too).

In 2013, Biales backed by Ricky Nye and The Paris Blues Band recorded Singing in My Soul, an up-beat early jazz and blues album. Radio and critics loved Lisa’s music and the album won the Cincinnati Blues Society’s Best Self-Produced CD, also garnering her a spot at the upcoming August 2014 Cincinnati Blues Fest.

"Singing In My Soul" Gets Great Reviews!

It's always good to step aside from the clamor of the masculine mystique in the blues and visit with the ladies. So here is my latest visit to the 'soft side' (ha-ha) of the Blues featuring three wonderfully talented artists who surely will make you sit up and take notice of their ample talents.
Lisa Biales: Singing In My Soul
Lisa Biales: Singing In My Soul (Big Song Music)
One of the most quoted idioms in the Blues world is "if you are going to cover a song, make it your own'. Easily said, not so easy to do.
With this release Ms. Lisa Biales (Be-Alice) gives a lesson on how to do it and do it right. One of my all time favorite songs is the Mississippi John Hurt ditty 'Let The Mermaids Flirt With Me'. With this version Ms. Biales captures a different aide of the tune and make it flighty and more fun than should be allowed. With a voice that rings clear and spot on she adds a not-so-subtle touch of joy that uplifts us in the moment of and carries us right thru to the end.
With a old school rock & roll approach Lisa once again lifts us to the rafters, with her version of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's 'Strange Things Happening Every Day'. There seems to be a connection back to Ms. Tharpe's version, with it's rockin' gospel treatment, but done in a style that fits Lisa and the Paris Blues Band (yes, they are from Paris, France).
A superb take on the classic doo-wop song 'I Only Have Eyes for You' allows Ms. Biales to work her ability to sing ballads as well as her more uplifting songs. This works especially well in terms of the arranging and artistry that the bands imparts keeping it on the down low and you can just smell the smoke and taste the extra dry martini's in the shadow laden club (or studio).
From the doo-wop to the 'do-how' we get treated to "You Got To Know How'. Originally penned by the amazing Sippie Wallace, Ms. Biales keeps the historic time period of this track in tact with rolling piano by Cincinnati's favorite Ricky Nye (who also produced this release) and a down 'n' dirty treatment from the Paris Blue Band, dang I swear I hear a tuba on this track, that's how cool the treatment is.
There is one original tune from Ms. Biales, 'Magic Garden' is a tasty walk thru this magic garden of hers that seems to be chock-filled with earthy delights and eternal renewal for everything that resides inside it. It is also worth noting that this track fits in so well with the overall feel and texture of the release, not an easy task to do.
There seems to be a natural fit with Ms. Biales and her band that transposes to the release. I can just see them sitting in the recording room/studio over one mic and sharing, laughing, and making historic music to share with us all.

Big Song Music artist: Lisa Biales - Singing In My Soul - New Release Review

I have just received and had the opportunity to review the newest release, Singing In My Soul, by Lisa Biales with Ricky Nye and The Paris Blues Band. You want real wholesome Americana/Blues music, this is it. Opening with A Little Bird Told Me, Biales sings a song so real it could be right out of a Roy Rogers movie. You an tell that Biales really enjoys her work and her voice is really well suited for this material. Nye and the Paris Blues Band, Thibaut Chopin on upright bass, Anthony Stelmaszack on guitar, Ricky Nye on piano and Simon "Shuffle" Boyer on drums add substantial realism to the track with vocal backing. On Sister Rosetta Thorpe's Strange Things Happening Every Day, Biales gets the house swinging and Stelmaszack adds a real slick guitar solo to tip off the track. John Hurt's Let The Mermaids Flirt With Me is up next and Biales really does a nice job bringing new life to this track. Doug Hamilton also adds a real nice violin solo on this track. Sippie Wallace's You Got To Know How really shows Biales vocal sweetness and is one of my favorite tracks on the release. Nye adds a really nice piano solo on this track again staying very close to authentic reproduction. Very cool. A Biales original, Magic Garden slows the tempo slightly but the songs flow with each other very nicely. Biales on vocal and Nye on piano makes for a very slick duet. Hamilton steps up again presenting another tasty violin solo. Bill Littleford adds a jazzy guitar solo on this track as well just adding shine to an already spiffy apple. WC Handy's Careless Love is up next and holding to the balance of the release, this is a pure track from the heartland. Biales has a very clear voice and is bound to find a number of new fans with this no nonsense approach to traditional music. Classic track, I Only Have Eyes For You, changes in feel from a simple backyard sound to a clean club setting. Biales really does a great job delivering this classic with smooth instrumental backing. Littleford plays a short but really effective guitar solo on this track adding depth. Waiting For The Train To Come In returns to the simple life of the 40's and Biales adapts nicely from track to track and in maturity required to handle each part. Nye plays a strong key set here and Stelmaszack adds some of the tastiest guitar riffs on the release. Write Me In Care Of The Blues has a real boogie swing to it and Biales gets a vocal grind going. A final track by Sister Rosetta Thorpe, Singing In My Soul, wraps the release in fine fashion with a large strut. Stelmaszack again steps up and delivers cocky rockin guitar riffs to support Biales' great cover of a hot track.

Lisa Biales Says I’m Singing in My Soul on New CD from Big Song Music, Due April 16 Singer/Songwriter to Celebrate New CD Release with a Series of Promo Events

OXFORD, OH – Singer/songwriter Lisa Biales (pronounced “Be-Alice”) announces an April 16 release date for her new CD, Singing in My Soul, coming from Big Song Music. Lisa is backed on the new CD by Cincinnati-based pianist Ricky Nye (who also produced the album) and the Paris Blues Band (and yes, they really are from France), which includes Thibaut Chopin on upright bass, Anthony Stelmaszack on guitar and Simon “Shuffle” Boyer on drums.

Lisa Biales, with Ricky Nye and The Paris Blues Band will celebrate the new CD release with a series of special promotion events in her native Ohio and Kentucky. Dates include shows at the WNKU – Studio 89 Concert Series at Northern Kentucky University on April 22; the Oxford Community Arts Center in Oxford, Ohio on April 25; and Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza and Concert House in Worthington, Ohio on April 26.
The 10 cuts on Singing in My Soul reflect Lisa’s diverse musical tastes, as she covers everything from gospel (Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Strange Things Happening Every Day” and the title track); blues (Mississippi John Hurt’s “Let the Mermaids Flirt with Me,” Sippie Wallace’s “You Got to Know How” and W. C. Handy’s “Careless Love”); old time pop (Blu Lu Barker’s “A Little Bird Told Me,” Peggy Lee’s “Waiting for the Train to Come In”); and even a beautiful slow ballad version of the doo-wop classic, “I Only Have Eyes for You”. Lisa’s lone original song on the album, “Magic Garden,” a tune she wrote in a playful finger-style guitar framework, fits in perfectly amongst the rest of the repertoire. Of special note is her wondrous take of “Write Me in Care of the Blues,” a song she found doing research for the play “Always, Patsy Cline,” in which Biales was cast in the leading role for the local production.

“The director approached me to see if I was interested in playing the part of Patsy Cline for our community theatre group OxAct,” Biales said.  “Well, I loved Patsy Cline and all the songs that were in the show.  I thought about it for about three years.  Finally, I said yes and blocked off my schedule a year in advance.  We hired a fantastic band, and the two-woman show, with Nora Ellen Bowers playing the part of Patsy’s friend Louise, sold out every night for three weeks in Oxford, Ohio. We had a ball and I LOVED singing those wonderful songs and stepping into Patsy Cline's shoes every night. My favorite scene from the play was in the kitchen, sitting at the table, with a cigarette in hand, singing ‘Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray.’”
The organic chemistry of Lisa’s work in the studio with Ricky Nye and The Paris Blues Band translates on disc to a beautifully comfortable listening experience, creating a house concert ambience throughout.

“I like the feeling we got on this recording over all,” Lisa recalled. “Everyone was in a good mood, cracking on each other. I loved hearing Simon count off a tune ‘un deux trois’ in French. We recorded together in one room; and the vocals are the original ‘scratch’ vocals from the session. We captured something special and I didn’t want to change a thing. When you work with people who like playing together, you get something magical.

“One of my favorite parts of this recording session was watching Ricky, Thibaut, Simon and Anthony sing on the song, ‘A Little Bird Told Me’. They all stood around one mic and got a real old school call-and-response feel to this song. They were hesitant at first about singing; I told them I loved this kind of singing and wanted their voices on my record.  This song makes me very happy.”

Ohio-based Lisa Biales has spent a lifetime making music. Her diverse musical influences drive her to continue to evolve as an artist, singer and guitarist. Singing in My Soul showcases her amazing gift for making cover songs all her own. She sings with a crystal pure voice and writes music about the simple things in life. Lisa grew up in a musical family and began her career as a performing songwriter at an early age. She’s independently released seven albums of music under her own Big Song Music label, and is heard on radio stations around the world. Her song “Playing with Angels” went to #1 in Australia and “Where the Buckwheat Blooms” hit #32 on the folk radio charts in the U.S.

Her 2012 release, Just Like Honey, was produced by EG Kight and the legendary Paul Hornsby and garnered universal acclaim for Lisa’s music. Just Like Honey was also named as one of the top 100 Blues Albums of 2012 by the Roots Music Report. Lisa has been called “The Belle of the Blues” and critics rave about her powerful, sultry, crystal pure voice.  “She can stretch out a note to the kind of length that makes you forget that you are holding your breath,” said Alternate Root Magazine. “Lisa’s soul-stirring voice and unique guitar has created her signature sound,” wrote The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Big Song Music Artist: Lisa Biales - Just Like Honey - New Release Review

I have been listening to the new recording, Just Like Honey, by Lisa Biales which will be released by Big Song Music on June 5, 2012. Biales has a great voice for the style of music she sings. She was made for this music. This 14 track release covers such artists as Memphis Minnie, Candye Kane, Ma Rainey and Bonnie Raitt as well as a number of original tracks. Here music is strongly pop oriented with an overlay of blues and instrumentally tight featuring such musical greats as Tommy Talton, Bill Stewart, Marshall Coats,Dave Blackmon, EG Knight and Bruce Hornsby. The recording is very relaxing and is certain to do well across several genres of music listeners. I think that Biales own Gypsy Woman Blues is the stand out blues influenced track with some cool slide work from Talton.

Lisa Biales Sings "Just Like Honey" on New CD Out June 5 Produced by EG Kight

LISA BIALES SINGS JUST LIKE HONEY ON NEW CD DUE JUNE 5 FROM BIG SONG MUSIC, PRODUCED BY EG KIGHT & RECORDED AT PAUL HORNSBY’S STUDIO IN MACON, GA

GUEST MUSICIANS INCLUDE EG KIGHT, PAUL HORNSBY, TOMMY TALTON, BILL STEWART AND DAVID BLACKMON

OXFORD, OH – Singer Lisa Biales (pronounced “Be-Alice”) has announced the June 5 release of her new CD, Just Like Honey, produced by EG Kight and recorded, mixed, mastered ands co-produced by the legendary Paul Hornsby (The Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels, etc.) at his Muscadine Studio in Macon, Georgia. The CD is being released on her own Big Song Music label and will be available through CD Baby, iTunes and Amazon.com. Lisa is backed on the sessions by a host of stellar musicians, including former Capricorn Records’ mainstays Tommy Talton on guitar and Bill Stewart on drums, as well as heralded fiddle/mandolin player David Blackmon (Jerry Reed, Widespread Panic, Blueground Undergrass). Both EG Kight and Paul Hornsby join in the fun, too: Hornsby plays keyboards throughout, and EG Kight not only lends her perfect harmony vocals on a number of tracks, but also joins Lisa in a beautiful duet of the Delmore Brothers classic, “Blues Stay Away from Me.”

“EG Kight’s vision for this project was to put together original songs with some of my early musical influences,” says Lisa Biales about the sessions. “In the studio, we figured out each song in the control room gathered around Paul’s mixing board. When we’d all get into the feeling of the song, someone would say, ‘That’s It!,’ and we’d all rush with excitement into the recording room and cut the tune.”

Kight’s “vision” of the album is a perfect match for Lisa Biales’ superb vocals, which - like the title track says - drip “Just Like Honey” over a wide range of rootsy musical influences, including Americana, blues, folk and old-timey music. Just Like Honey features Lisa’s sultry takes on Memphis Minnie’s “Call the Fire Wagon,” Candye Kane/Jack Tempchin’s “Gifted in the Ways of Love” and Ma Rainey’s “Yonder Come the Blues;” plus a powerful version of one of Lisa’s favorite singers – Etta James – on “Damn Your Eyes”, and another personal favorite – Bonnie Raitt – on “Give It Up.”

The CD also includes several Lisa Biales and EG Kight originals, as well as a song from Tommy Talton.

Lisa’s song, “I Believe,” was featured in the TV show, Girlfriends, on the CW Network; and a previous CD, Closet Hippie, was played extensively on Sirius XM’s “The Coffee House” channel. She also lends her voice and guitar to the soundtrack of Sarah Knight’s new documentary film, Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend, a portrait of Nicole Sherry, head grounds-keeper for the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards (one of only two women in that position in Major League Baseball). Lisa Biales makes her film debut in Academy Award-winning director Francis Ford Coppola’s new film, Twixt. Inspired by the gothic horror of Edgar Allen Poe, Coppola's latest tells the tale of a burnt-out mystery writer (Val Kilmer) who gets mixed up in murder and evil in a California town. Lisa portrays a waitress named Ruth, who appears in a dream of the tortured writer, she lures (Kilmer) into a hotel for a drink while her husband (Don Novello) tinkers with a broken clock. When Lisa picks up the guitar to sing for her guest (the classic, “Big Rock Candy Mountain”), the ghost of a girl (Elle Fanning) appears and gets seduced by Lisa’s voice. The film is being released in the UK first this month. To view the trailer for Twixt, click on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP7cQnOcU7I.
