Jumpin' Jack Flash - Johnny Winter

John Dawson "Johnny" Winter III (born February 23, 1944) is an American blues guitarist, singer, and producer. Best known for his late 1960s and 1970s high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances, Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues legend Muddy Waters. Since his time with Waters, Johnny Winter has recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums and continues to tour extensively. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 74th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" John Dawson "Johnny" Winter III (born February 23, 1944) is an American blues guitarist, singer, and producer. Since his time with Waters, Johnny Winter has recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums and continues to tour extensively. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 74th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" Winter caught his biggest break in December 1968, when Mike Bloomfield, whom he met and jammed with in Chicago, invited him to sing and play a song during a Bloomfield and Al Kooper concert at the Fillmore East in New York. As it happened, representatives of Columbia Records (which had released the Top Ten Bloomfield/Kooper/Stills Super Session album) were at the concert. Winter played and sang B.B. King's "It's My Own Fault" to loud applause and, within a few days, was signed to reportedly what was then the largest advance in the history of the recording industry—$600,000. Winter's first Columbia album, Johnny Winter, was recorded and released in 1969. It featured the same backing musicians with whom he had recorded The Progressive Blues Experiment, bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Uncle John Turner, plus Edgar Winter on keyboards and saxophone, and (for his "Mean Mistreater") blues legends Willie Dixon on upright bass and Big Walter Horton on harmonica. The album featured a few selections that became Winter signature songs, including his composition "Dallas" (an acoustic blues, on which Winter played a steel-bodied, resonator guitar), John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "Good Morning Little School Girl", and B.B. King's "Be Careful With A Fool". The album's success coincided with Imperial Records picking up The Progressive Blues Experiment for wider release. The same year, the Winter trio toured and performed at several rock festivals, including Woodstock. With brother Edgar added as a full member of the group, Winter also recorded his second album, Second Winter, in Nashville in 1969. The two-record album, which only had three recorded sides (the fourth was blank), introduced a couple more staples of Winter's concerts, including Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" and Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited". Also at this time Johnny entered into an intimate, albeit short-lived affair with Janis Joplin which culminated in a concert at New York's Madison Square Garden where Johnny joined the then reigning Queen of R&R on stage to sing and perform. In 1970, when his brother Edgar released a solo album Entrance and formed Edgar Winter's White Trash, an R&B/jazz-rock group, the original trio disbanded. Johnny Winter then formed a new band with the remnants of The McCoys—guitarist Rick Derringer, bassist Randy Jo Hobbs, and drummer Randy Z (who was Derringer's brother, their family name being Zehringer). Originally to be called "Johnny Winter and The McCoys", the name was shortened to "Johnny Winter And", which was also the name of their first album. The album included Derringer's "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" and signaled a more rock-oriented direction for Winter. When Johnny Winter And began to tour, Randy Z was replaced with drummer Bobby Caldwell. Their mixture of the new rock songs with Winter's blues songs was captured on the live album Live Johnny Winter And. It included a new performance "It's My Own Fault", the song which brought Winter to the attention of Columbia Records. Winter's momentum was throttled when he sank into heroin addiction during the Johnny Winter And days. After he sought treatment for and recovered from the addiction, manager Steve Paul courageously put Winter in front of the music press to discuss the addiction candidly. By 1973, he returned to the music scene with the release of Still Alive and Well, a basic blend between blues and hard rock, whose title track was written by Rick Derringer. His comeback concert at Long Island, N.Y.'s Nassau Colliseum featured the "And" line-up minus Rick Derringer. Performing on stage was also Johnny's wife Susie. The follow-up album, John Dawson Winter III featured Sweet Papa John, a highly-dubbed slow blues number written by Johnny, which also appeared in an extended version on the later issued "Captured Live." Saints & Sinners, continued the same direction; this was followed by another concert set, the aforementioned Captured Live!, which featured an extended performance of "Highway 61 Revisited". In 1975 Johnny returned to Bogalusa, Louisiana to produce an album for Thunderhead, a local band which included Pat Rush and Bobby "T" Torello, who would later play with Winter. In live performances, Winter often told the story about how, as a child, he dreamed of playing with the blues guitarist Muddy Waters. In 1977, after Waters' long-time label Chess Records went out of business, he got his chance. Winter brought Waters into the studio to record Hard Again for Blue Sky Records, a label set up by Winter's manager and distributed by Columbia. In addition to producing the album, Winter played guitar with Waters veteran James Cotton on harmonica. Winter produced two more studio albums for Waters, I'm Ready (with Big Walter Horton on harmonica) and King Bee and a best-selling live album Muddy "Mississippi" Waters – Live. The partnership produced three Grammy Awards for Waters and an additional Grammy for Winter's own Nothin' But the Blues (Johnny Winter album), with backing by members of Waters' band. Waters told Deep Blues author Robert Palmer that Winter had done remarkable work in reproducing the sound and atmosphere of Waters's vintage Chess Records recordings of the 1950s. The albums gave Waters the highest profile and greatest financial successes of his life. After his time with Blue Sky Records, Winter began recording for several labels, including Alligator, Point Blank, and Virgin, where he focused on blues-oriented material. In 2004, he received a Grammy Award nomination for his I’m a Bluesman album. Beginning in 2007, a series of live Winter albums titled the Live Bootleg Series and a live DVD have all entered the Top 10 Billboard Blues chart. In 2009, The Woodstock Experience album was released, which includes eight songs that Winter performed at the 1969 festival. In 2011, Johnny Winter released a new studio album titled Roots on Megaforce Records. It includes Winter's interpretation of eleven early blues and rock 'n' roll classics and features several guest artists (Vince Gill, Sonny Landreth, Susan Tedeschi, Edgar Winter, Warren Haynes, and Derek Trucks). Winter has continued to perform live, including at festivals throughout North America and Europe. He has headlined such prestigious events as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, the 2009 Sweden Rock Festival, The Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, and Rockpalast. He also performed with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater in New York City on the 40th anniversary of their debut. In 2007 and 2010, Winter performed at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festivals. Two guitar instructional DVDs have been produced by Cherry Lane Music and the Hal Leonard Corporation. The Gibson Guitar Company released the signature Johnny Winter Firebird guitar in a ceremony in Nashville with Slash presenting.

Johnny Winter's Custom Alembic

Rick Turner took guitar and bass design to new levels in the early 1970s as a partner at Alembic, and he went over the edge in 1974 with this custom Alembic guitar for blues legend Johnny Winter.

Turner took his inspiration for the dragon motif from Winter's tattoos, and the actual design of the dragon came from an Irish carving he saw on the back of a hand mirror his grandmother owned. He carved the dragon into the body of bubinga, maple, mahogany and ebony. He cut the multi-layered "fire" from the dragon's mouth directly from an abalone shell.

As a silversmith's helper in the late '60s, Turner made a lot of fabricated, soldered and welded jewelry in copper, brass, bronze and silver, and many of his custom Alembics reflected that experience. For Winter's guitar he handmade the brass bridge and tailpiece and the hammered, 16-gauge brass control cover on the back. He bound the fingerboard in sterling silver and installed LED lights for the side dot markers.

Although Alembic continued to use exotic woods for basses and guitars, this is the last fully sculptural guitar Turner made at Alembic.

Megaforce Records artist: Johnny Winter - Roots - New Release review

I just received the new Johnny Winter recording, "Roots". Johnny comes out of the gate swinging with "T-Bone Shuffle" where he trades solos with Sonny Landreth, broadly known as one of the blues most popular slide guitar players, and never lets up on the heat through the entire set. His second track is "Further on Up the Road" which is again done swing style but with a nice Texas gait. Here Johnny trades solos with guitarist Jimmy Vivino, band leader of the Basic Cable Band (Conan O'Brien Show). The third track, "Done Somebody Wrong", is of course an old Elmore James song and here Johnny trades solos with Gov't Mule and Allman Brothers, Warren Haynes Band guitarist extraordinaire Warren Haynes. Next up is "Got My Mojo Workin'" in traditional Muddy Waters style where Johnny features Frank Latorre a great harmonica player, artist and leader of The Kingbees. Next up is "Last Night" where Johnny throws down a pretty dirty solo and features harmonica wiz John Popper from Blues Traveler. Up next, a traditional rendition of "Maybelline". Johnny always had a propensity toward Chuck Berry and it's good to see him revisit his roots here with Vince Gill taking a little tour down rock lane.... and Vince is a great player! "Bright Lights, Big City" is up next where Winter takes a duet with Susan Tedeschi who both sings and solos. Tedeschi of course has led her own band for years and has now joined forces with her husband Derek Trucks. Two classic vocalists and two premiere guitar players who both get their licks in! "Honky Tonk" is a great guitar showcase for Johnny playing in his traditional style. Edgar's playing on sax is always exemplary and after my being raised on White Trash, his distinctive tone and style is easily recognized and a welcome treat. Near the end of the song he winds it up like he did on some of the old records that I love so well and it gets Johnny charged too. Good to see the boys together again. Next up is "Dust My Broom" and what better to showcase Derek Trucks and Johnny Winter than another Elmore James tune. These two guys have always had some of the best slide style around. Johnny's guitar is easily discerned from Trucks and he sounds great...and Trucks always does! "Short Fat Fannie" is Johnny with his base band where he features his own rhythm guitar player, Paul Nelson who has a resume as a session man as long as your arm. Johnny gives him a chance to show off a little and he takes it. Nelson handles being Johnny's backup guitar player very well ... like Derringer did some 40 years ago. Last up, "Come Back Baby", is a nice slow blues which really gives everyone a chance to shine. Keyboard player John Medeski gets the chance to solo here on organ. He adds a nice warm sound to the song.
This is a real solid cd and one that I feel most blues fans and all Johnny Winter fans will enjoy!

TBNV - It's My Own Fault - Johnny Winter And - Live

Another installation in Terrific But No Video. This is a great recording from the prime of Johnny Winter. Got young Rick Derringer on there who was relatively unknown (Hang on Sloopy) but Johnny knew that he was a player. Johnny was developing a following and hadn't hit the "big time" yet, ie he wasn't getting any airplay! When I first heard this recording I thought man this guy is absolutely incredible...I was right! Rick was a guitar prodigy who had a beautiful mastery of the guitar as well as a nice 59 Gibson Explorer. Most don't know this but Rick became afraid to carry his split head explorer on the road (no crap) even back in the early 70's so he commissioned Charles LoBue of the famous Guitar Shop in NYC to custom build him a couple of custon made Explorers that he could take without the risk of loss. Yeah, all of those magazine cover shots were with the lobue which can easily distinguished from Ricks split head. With Gibson and Fenders reputations in the tank at the time after both suffering corporate buyouts, many professional players were going to LoBue Guitars for at least setups, custom pickups, body mods and one offs. There was also another couple electronics wizards there at the shop ... Larry DiMarzio and his second in command, Steve Bluecher.

Back to Johnny Winter. This is an absolutely terrific recording and one that deserves it's listening!! A must have recording.

Mannish Boy/Got My Mojo Working - Muddy Waters - Johnny Winter

I really love the earliest Muddy Waters recordings the best but the olast few recordings that he did with Johnny Winter are exceptional.

McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1913 – April 30, 1983), known as Muddy Waters , was an American blues musician, generally considered the Father of modern Chicago blues. Blues musicians Big Bill Morganfield and Larry "Mud Morganfield" Williams are his sons. A major inspiration for the British blues explosion in the 1960s, Muddy was ranked #17 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

It's My Own Fault

Costello was born in Philadelphia in 1979, moved with his family to Atlanta at the age of 9, and soon afterward picked up the guitar. Within a few short years he'd won the Memphis Blues Society's new talent award, and was on the road with his own band. At age 17 he released his first album, "Call The Cops", acclaimed by Real Blues Magazine as "an explosive debut." He soon joined forces with fellow blues guitarist Susan Tedeschi, with whom he toured and recorded, laying down tasteful lead guitar work on her Gold-certified Tone-Cool debut "Just Won't Burn".

In 2000, Costello released "Cuttin' In" on Landslide Records, which earned him critical acclaim as well as a prestigious W. C. Handy Award nomination for 'Best New Artist Debut.' With 2002's "Moanin' For Molasses", also on Landslide, came a Blues Revue cover story touting Costello as "the top contender to be the next blues star - and soon." Costello's hometown paper The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called his guitar playing "masterful" and of "remarkable maturity." The paper also compared him to such legends as B. B. King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

In 2005, his self-titled fourth CD "Sean Costello" was released by Artemis Records. Produced by Steve Rosenthal (The Rolling Stones, Suzanne Vega, Freedy Johnston), it was an appealing blend of soul, funk, upbeat rock. He was joined by some very special guests: Levon Helm of The Band sits in on two tracks, as does his daughter, Amy Helm, with her group, Ollabelle. Steve Jordan, Willie Weeks and the Conan O'Brien horn section also appear.
Sean's Delta Groove debut CD "We Can Get Together", just released in February, was produced by Costello himself. He was justly proud of "We Can Get Together", calling it the best work he'd ever done, and the critics agreed, with excellent reviews from radio and press alike lauding it his most impressive and mature work to date.

Costello was fortunate enough to earn the respect and admiration of many of his own idols, and had the opportunity to perform with his mentors. He shared stages with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Pinetop Perkins, and Bo Diddley among many others. He recently said, "All I've ever wanted to do was play the guitar well. I've been fortunate to be able to make a living doing it, and I plan to keep it up for the rest of my life.

Johnny has always been in the background doing incredible things. It took a little pop airplay to get him some real dough in the 70's but Johnny has been out there playing the blues since the 50's. Here's an early cut showing Johnny's chops.
