Justin Saladino Band - A Fool's Heart - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, A Fool's Heart, from Justin Saladino Band and it's groovingly smooth. Opening with A Fool I'll Stay, a melody rich track with a catchy hook, Justin Saladino on lead guitar and vocal crafts a top radio track, joined by Gabriel Forget on bass, A.J. Aboud on drums and Felix Blackburn on guitars. Add a little bounce and you have Honey, a polished R&B track with just the perfect balance of guitar and vocal.  Take What You Need is polished with a solid weave of vocals, keys and guitar. This is as close to Steely Dan as it gets. My favorite track on the release is Bad Habit with it's skipping funky rock fusion feel. Saladino's vocals are cool and lain back and the guitar, bass and drums workout is terrific! Bluesy ballad, Peace Be With You, has a strong melody and familiar feel with smooth vocals and nicely accented guitar work over warm organ backing. Very nice. Wrapping the release is Mama Said, an easy set acoustic style ballad featuring Saladino backing his own vocals with fingerpicked electric guitar. This is a really "nice" release with a lot of feel.

No Label Records artist: Steve Hill - The One-Man Blues Rock Band - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The One-Man Blues Rock Band, a new live album from Steve Hill and it's powerful. Opening with Rhythm All Over, a power rocker, Steve Hill wastes no time making you a believer. With an excellent rock voice, the terrific ability to accompany himself as well as any band and fluid slide riffs, this is an excellent opener. His lead guitar on Go On, make you actually sit back and listen. This guy's playing has such presence that it rivals Jimmy Page and Alvin Lee. We're talking strong phrasing and focused notes. With a solid bass line and strong melody, Hill has great energy.  Excellent! Never Is Such A Long Time oozes blues like it was born in the Mississippi hill country but with a firm grip on modern rock and guitar techniques and tight drum rhythm giving it not only an emotional power but also strong musical punch. Very nice!  Little Walter's Hate To See You Go is a great blues rocker with Hill just killing it on guitar. You hear the initial interpretation style of jack White but pushed to the limits and the energy of young Alvin Lee. Terrific! Still Got It Bad is so beefy with tone that this thing is ready to pop. Excellent! The release is wrapped with a super rendition of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile with dynamics and gripping, soaring guitar riffs.

This is a really strong release and one that should easily plant Hill atop the hill!!

Spencer MacKenzie - Cold November - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Cold November, from Spencer MacKenzie and it's solid. Opening with light funk rocker, Fine Place To Start, Mackenzie shows real promise on lead vocal and guitar. Joined by Miles Evans on piano, Al Duffy on bass, Sean O'Grady on drums, Brant Parker on lead guitar, Dave Dunlop on trumpet, Peter Hysen on trombone, Jay Davidson on sax this is a polished opener. On Move On Down The Track, MacKenzie blends in a bit of country drive and Parker on slide enriches the sound even further. The title track, Cold November is a bluesy ballad with soulful vocals, a nice melody and strong guitar riffs. Very nice. One of my release favorites is Voices Echoing with a funky jazz feel and boppy keyboard by Evans reminiscent of Brian Auger. Haunt Me is a cool shuffle track with real radio appeal. Backing vocals by Rochelle Harrison and Camille Harrison add yet another dimension to this smooth jazzy approach with light and breezy solos by Mackenzie and Evans. Another of my favorites on the release is Robert Cray's, You Move Me with a great bass rumble by Duffy. Traces of Albert King are in MacKenzie's guitar riffs and Evans' piano work weaves in just right. Wrapping the release is Gary Clark Jr.'s Next Door Neighbor Blues with understated slide work throughout and resonator (sound) solo riding high on top of what is really a stripped down rocker. very nice closer to a solid release.

Cordova Bay Records artist: David Vest - Self-titled - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the newest self-titled release from David Vest and it's a rock and roller. Opening with Some Old Lonesome Day, David Vest, who handles piano and lead vocals is backed by Billy Hicks on drums, Ryan Tandy on bass and Tom Bowler and Peter Dammann on guitar. Genevieve kicks into a R&B style with a cool bass and drum rhythm and New Orleans style piano rolls by Vest and tasty guitar work by Bowler and Dammann. Boogie track, Party In The Room Next Door, kicks it up a few more notches giving Vest the open road to really rock out on piano. Following suit is a strong rockabilly style guitar solo making this one of the best tracks on the release. Elvis Presley's Leak In This Old Building really captures that R&B rockin style with gospel style piano. Traditional track, Gotta Travel On gets a Latin jazz remix with lead piano by Vest improvising the melody with tight drum riffs by Hicks giving it a New Orleans flavor. Very cool. Renoviction Man digs right into the old style John Lee Hooker styling with loose vocal phrasing, excellent piano riffs and old style blues guitar riffs. Possibly my favorite track on the release. Wrapping the release is Lomax, a somber ballad highlighting Vest on piano and vocal. This is an interesting release with a broad variety of sounds.

Spectra Musique artist: Jordan Officer - Three Rivers - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Three Rivers, from Jordan Officer and I'm really looking forward to getting it home on the real system Office has a unique style of blending easy playful tunes with intense bursts of guitar and the opener, Your Body's My Home. An easy paced guitar rhythm and a mellow melody is the stage for crisp and intense burst of guitar energy, backed by Zev Katz on bass and Charley Drayton on drums. Very cool. Big swinger, One Handed Push-Ups is a great jump track featuring officer on lead vocal as well as guitar and violin. This is a snappy track with real fireworks. Super! Easy rocker, Dream of You and Me has nice paired vocals and with solid bass lines, and brushed drums, Officer riffs off some real nice melodic lead solo lines. Slow and quiet is how he approaches Just To Be With You with solid vocals, cool fiddle soloing and crisp guitar riffs...all by officer over bass and drums. Very effective. With a Bo Diddley beat and Roy Buchanan like trem bends, Officer scampers vocally across the New Orleans like drumming of Drayton adding Hawaiian like slide riffs. Very cool. Wrapping the release is Buck Jumping Into New Orleans with a real strong New Orleans rhythmic feel. The thumping bass of Katz, the tom tom backbone of Drayton sets an excellent platform for Officer lay down excellent guitar and violin riffs on a solid closer.

Suzie Vinnick - Shake The love Around - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Shake The Love Around, from Suzie Vinnick and it's light rocker with fine vocals and a poppy feel. Opening with Happy As Hell, Vinnick lays down a cool funky guitar line and with Gary Craig on drums, Johnny Johnson on sax and Dean McTaggart they really set up a tight foundation to support her strong vocal lines. Another track with a nice back beat, Lean Into The Light has a real infectious feel with nicely harmonized vocals courtesy David Leask and slick guitar work by Vinnick. A particularly cool track is Danger Zone with Vinnick accompanying herself on bass. Excellent job. My favorite track on the release is Creaking Pines with a haunting melody and some of Vinnick's best vocals and nicely stylized blues guitar riffs. Excellent. Wrapping the release is Drift Away, a strong ballad with a smart melody. With only light electric and acoustic guitar, drums and Hammond by Mark lalama, this is a sweet closer for a solid release.

Powerful Soul Ensemble Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar Set to Release Sophomore Recording

Powerful Soul Ensemble Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar
Set to Release Sophomore Recording

Run To Me out April 27 followed by hometown CD launch party April 28 at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto

Watch/Share new live video for "All Night Long" here

For Immediate Release: March 29, 2018 (Toronto,ON) - Toronto-based Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar’s latest recording, entitled Run to Me, is scheduled for release on April 27, 2018. Produced by Darcy Yates (bassist for Bahamas), the new album explores the full range of the vicissitudes of love: desire, betrayal and, at times, emotional and sexual satisfaction. The lyrics are incisive, the melodies are constantly arresting and the harmonies and arrangements call up the best of the soul sounds of Stax Records and such contemporary artists as Leon Bridges, Sharon Jones, and Lee Fields.

Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar’s debut release, 2015’s Send the Nightingale, was a stripped- down affair consisting of Martin, her two co-singers Sherie and Stacie, and guitarist Mikey McCallum. For Run to Me, Martin elected to record her emotionally wrought material with an expanded band, augmenting the core of Delta Sugar’s gospel-infused harmonies with a full rhythm section, piano, organ and an ever-so-soulful horn section.

Send the Nightingale was a stunning achievement which garnered four Maple Blues nominations in 2016, was regularly featured on the CBC, topped the blues charts on Stingray radio and propelled the group onto the stages of all the major Canadian festivals and clubs coast to coast. Subsequent to the album’s release, Martin has been nominated three years in a row as Female Vocalist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards. Continuing to build on the group’s steamrolling momentum, in the fall of 2017, Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar were selected by a panel of blues experts to represent Toronto at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, a platform that has served to launch any number of careers in both Europe and the United States.

While Martin is a powerhouse unto herself, the vocal alchemy of Delta Sugar is not the work of a single talent. In combination with what she likes to term her “co-vocalists,” Sherie Marshall and newest full-time member Mwansa Mwansa, the vocal blend Delta Sugar produces is pure, unadulterated gospel-tinged, neuron-tingling magic where the sum is even richer than the already soul-melting parts.

After performing 130 high energy “soul revue” style shows in the US and Canada in 2017, and buzz-worthy showcases at both Americana (Sept. 2017) and at The International Blues Challenge in Memphis (Jan. 2018) – Samantha is now building her European fan base with two full-length European tours scheduled before February 2019. The live show is a torrid force of nature, taking audiences to emotional peaks while leaving them stunned with pin-you-against-the-wall power.

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar CD Release Party
Saturday, April 28
The Horseshoe Tavern
370 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON
Doors at 8:00 p.m. Show at 9:00 p.m. with Dani Nash and The Honeyrunners
Advance tickets $15 available at ticketfly.com / $20 at the door

Marshall Lawrence - Feeling Fine - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Feeling Fine, by Marshall Lawrence and it's a solid rocker. Opening with title track, Feeling Fine, Lawrence on lead vocal and guitar is joined by Zach Daniel Robertson on bass, Alan Beveridge on drums and Andrew Glover on keys, the band has nice vocal harmonies somewhat similar to Good Rats. Country/blues flavored rocker, Ida Mae, has a cool shuffle spine and aggressive guitar lead and tight drums reminding me a bit of Molly Hatchet. Blues number, Blues Still Got Me has a great 12 bar feel. Grinding guitar lead gives this track a definite edge making it one of my favorites on the release. Bluesy ballad, Help Me Find My Way Home, has strong radio appeal with a nice melody, modest but interesting guitar lead and well balanced backing. Latin flavored, Keep On Walking, features Lawrence on slide guitar and he sets a nice groove. With tight drum riffs and a solid bass line, this is a great lead into the release closer, Dirty Dishes. Blues rocker with a cool backbeat, not only gives up a good foot stomper but also has nice guitar lead and some of Lawrence's best vocals.

Stony Plain artist: Sue Foley - The Ice Queen - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Ice Queen, from Sue Foley and I think it may be her best yet. Opening with Come To Me with Charlie Sexton joining on vocal and slide guitar, Foley adds a little funk to her already bluesy deal with Chris Maresh on bass, Chris Layton on drums and Kyle Thompson on maracas. Run has a country 2 step feel and Foley really drives this one with her ambitious guitar rhythm. Slow blues and title track, The Ice Queen, shows Foley at her purest with George rains on drums and Billy Horton on bass. Her riffs are right off a Hooker release and her vocals are simple and direct. Very nice. Shuffle track, The Lucky Ones features Jimmie Vaughan trading lead vocal and guitar riffs. With the addition of Mike Flanigin or organ, the track has an additional dimension and Foley's guitar riffs play nicely against Vaughan's. Billy Gibbons joins on Fool's Golds and his vocals really work great with Foley's. his solo work is always distinctive and effortless giving this track a nice sparkle. Blues ballad, If I Have Forsaken You is the strongest melodic track on the release giving it solid radio potential and Vaughan's distinctive playing style and tone shine. An updated cover of Bessie Smith's Send Me To the 'Lectric Chair is cool and fun. With Spanish and classical influences, The Dance highlight's Foley's acoustic guitar proficiency and also adds nicely to the overall texture of the release. Wrapping the release is Carter family's Cannonball Blues, again only Foley on acoustic guitar and vocal. This is a real nice closer for a totally enjoyable release.

Emily Burgess - Are We In Love? - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Are We In Love?, from Emily Burgess and it's fun. Burgess, who has played with a number of top guitarists as well as tours as a part of The Weber Brothers has stepped out on her own. Opening with Til I Get To Call You My Own, a Jimmy Reed style blues number, Emily Burgess has the mic and lead guitar role, backed by Sam Weber on guitar, Ryan Weber on bass, Ryan Brown on keys and Marcus Browne on drums. One of my favorites on the release is pop rocker, All I Wanna Do Is Love You with it's driving beat, sweet vocals and stinging guitar soloing. Blues ballad, Ain't That A Woman, has a great melody and with clean vocals and a nice melodic guitar solo, should easily garner radio play. Rocker, Only One In Your Dreams has a strong power pop sound with overdriven guitars, blended female vocals and Browne on harp. Another of my favorites is Arrested with loose, naïve style vocals, a bouncy rhythm and clever guitar riffs. Wrapping the release is acoustic vocal duet, What Has Been Is All Within, with Hillary Dumoulin. This is a cool release. It isn't straight down blues alley but it has all of the right stuff.

Steve Sainas - simple as this - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, simple as this, from Steve Sainas and it's calming. Opening with title track, Simple as This, Sainas accompanies his own vocals on acoustic guitar. Simple and clean. With a more deliberate rock feel, Sainas is joined by Kelly Stodola on drums and Chad Matthews on bass for solid track, Why Do We Fall. I really like this track with it's warm melody and reassuring bottom. Another of my favorites on the release is Your Light Will Shine On, with solid vocals, a nice melody and strong rhythm. My Darkest Days Are Gone presents my favorite vocals on the release supported by a warm melody and clean acoustic backing. Wrapping the release is springy, Everything's Gonna Be Alright, with it's comforting lyrics and cool melody. This is a sure departure from Sainas' blues band, Mud Dog but a solid solo effort.

Andre' Bisson - Break - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Break, from Andre' Bisson and it's a solid set of bluesy tracks. Opening with title track, Break, lead guitarist and vocalist, Andre' Bisson belts out a cool R&B melody, backed by Gordon Aeichele on alto and tenor sax, Bil Holinaty on bari and tenor sax, Loretta Hale on trumpet, Mike Rowell on bass, Sean Bruce Parker on drums and Jesse O'Brien on piano, B3 and Wurlitzer. With a lot of that early 70's style, Bisson throws his riffs out like a true pro. Funky, I Got The Right, has a great horn backing and especially nice bari sax leading into a fluid guitar solo by Bisson. I also really like O'Brien's piano work giving the track real sparkle. Ballad, The Reason Why, is particularity strong with and solid melody, warm vocals and nice backing horn work. Hi Stepping, Next In Line is power packed with some of the best vocals on the release, backed up with punchy horns and rocking guitar riffs. Latin flavored, Your Attention (I Don't Need) has a really nice feel with snappy rim shots, wurlizter piano soloing and powerful vocals. Slower blues number, Reflections, has a really nice feel and opens nicely for Bisson to solo on guitar, Backing keys by O'Brien add nice tension and horn work adds dynamics. Very nice. Another funky number, The Last Sandwich in Hungry Town, has a cool bass groove, courtesy of Rowell, with O'Brien, Aeichele, Holinaty and Hale setting up for Bisson's light, jazzy solo. Eleanor Rigby has a clever light jazz approach with a real nice trombone solo by Rob Sommerville. Wrapping the release is simple, rural flavored ballad, Nothing At All (Live) with very nice harmonized vocals, and cello by Hale. A nice closer for a cool release.

Stony Plain Records Signs Acclaimed Canadian Roots Guitarist/Singer Sue Foley and Will Release Her Label Debut CD, "The Ice Queen," March 2, 2018

Stony Plain Records Signs Acclaimed Canadian Roots Guitarist/Singer Sue Foley and Will Release Her Label Debut CD, The Ice Queen, March 2, 2018

Special Guests on New Disc Include Jimmie Vaughan, Z.Z. Top’s Billy F Gibbons and

Charlie Sexton

EDMONTON, AB – Stony Plain Records announces the signing of acclaimed Canadian roots guitarist/singer Sue Foley, and will release her label debut CD, The Ice Queen, on March 2, 2018.

Produced by Mike Flanigin, who also plays organ on the new disc, The Ice Queen was recorded at Firestation Studios in San Marcos, Texas. Joining Sue Foley as special guests is a trio of legendary Texas guitarslingers – Jimmie Vaughan, Z.Z.Top’s Billy F Gibbons and Charlie Sexton - as well as a host of other Lone Star State all-stars, including Chris “Whipper” Layton (formerly of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) and George Rains (drums), Derek O’Brien (guitar), Chris Maresh and Billy Horton (bass) and The Texas Horns: John Mills, Al Gomez, Jimmy Shortell, Randy Zimmerman and Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff.

I’m extremely excited to be working with Holger Petersen and Stony Plain Records,” Sue Foley says about the new CD. “Holger is one of the most knowledgeable ‘real music’ people in the business. Stony Plain is known to put out great music and I know The Ice Queen has found her home.”

Sue Foley is the only female member of the famed “Jungle Show,” featuring Billy Gibbons, Jimmie Vaughan, Mike Flanigin and Chris Layton, which became one of the hottest tickets in Austin in 2016. Soon after playing two sold out shows at Austin City Limits Live 3TEN Club in December, Foley entered the studio with her Texan pals and began laying down tracks for the new album. She will return to Austin for more of “The Jungle Shows” on December 26 and 27 at Antone's.

Recorded throughout 2017, The Ice Queen represents Foley’s full circle journey – her return to the roots of her career in Austin with producer Mike Flanigin. The album was recorded with her long-time friends and collaborators Vaughan, Gibbons, Layton, Sexton and others, as well as members of the Tedeschi Trucks and Gary Clark Jr. bands.

“When I was a teenager I idolized Jimmie Vaughan and Billy F Gibbons,” Foley says. “They're both legends now so this feels like an historical event (at least it does for me). And I grew up sitting at the feet of players like George ‘Big Beat’ Rains, Derek O'Brien and The Texas Horns. I spent many nights watching Charlie Sexton and the Arc Angels with Chris Layton. I learned and grew more musically in my years in Austin than at any point in my life. The fact that all these mega talented musicians have graced my album is beyond anything I hoped for. I am still pinching myself.”

A flood of inspiration and themes can be found on each of the tracks – ranging from lost love, anguish, and struggle to release, forgiveness and rebirth.  Mostly recorded live in the studio, Foley’s emotional vocal delivery, conviction, accessible yet inspired lyrics and intrepid guitar playing are all laid out, bare and raw for the songs to reveal.

Opening with the radio friendly, funky, swamp-meets Bo Diddley beat of “Come to Me,” The Ice Queen also features the upbeat and rollicking tracks “Run,” “The Lucky Ones” (a duet with Jimmie Vaughan) and “Gaslight.” There are several bluesy and soulful tracks, including “81,” “The Ice Queen,” (with its menacing John Lee Hooker vibe in tone and substance), “Fool's Gold” (featuring Billy F Gibbons on vocals and harmonica), “If I Have Forsaken You” (with the horns sounding echoes of the great Bobby “Blue” Bland), and a cheeky, guitar-heavy cover of Bessie Smith’s “Send Me To The ‘Lectric Chair.” Foley also provides some more mellow and unexpected songs on The Ice Queen with the jazzy “Death of a Dream,” the flamenco-blues hybrid “The Dance” (which showcases her acoustic guitar work) and a beautiful cover of the Carter Family’s “Cannonball Blues.”

Sue Foley is a multi-award-winning musician and one of the finest blues and roots artists working today. She is a veritable triple-threat of musical talent as a guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. As with many blues women of the past, Foley has a long history of defying convention, and being a positive role model for aspiring, young female musicians.

She has been working professionally since the age of 16, and by the age of 21, Foley had relocated to Austin, Texas, and began recording for Antone’s, the esteemed blues label and historic nightclub that helped launch the career of Stevie Ray Vaughan and many others. In the two decades that have followed, Sue Foley has been busy touring and recording steadily, all while toting her signature pink paisley Fender Telecaster. In 2001, she won the prestigious Juno Award (Canadian equivalent of the Grammy) and also holds the record for the most Maple Blues Awards in Canada and has earned three Trophees de Blues de France. She has also garnered several nominations at the Blues Music Awards from The Blues Foundation.

The Ice Queen represents Sue Foley’s indefatigable commitment to her craft, and her transparency with the journey that birthed her, further proving that you can’t keep a good blueswoman down, particularly when she is The Ice Queen.

Tom Savage - Everything Intertwined - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Everything Intertwined, from Tom Savage and it's a solid rock release. Opening with Forever, a rocking ballad, Savage on vocal and guitar, shows influences of Bruce Springsteen and Neil Diamond, joined by Tony Silvestri on keys, Seamus Cowan on bass and backing vocals and Bonz Bowering on drums. Title track, Everything Intertwined, is a quiet ballad with a solid melody and acoustic backing. Very nice. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Sad When You're Not With Me with a catchy melody and warm keys and strong but understated guitar. With more of a humble country rock feel, like the Band, another strong entry is Come Home with Savage's best vocals on the release. Pushing further into the rock arena, 17 Years has a rock solid bottom, twangy guitar riffs and a rocking beat. Very cool. Wrapping the release is Cold But Free, a strong ballad with a good melody and simple but effective instrumentation. This is a real nice closer for a cool release.

Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes - Cursed - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the debut release, Cursed, from Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes. Opening with Snatch & Grab It, Raha Javanfar, lead vocalist and bassist for Toronto based swing band is kicking it. A walking bass line with Andrew Moljgum on sax, Galen Pelley on drums, Tom Moffett on trumpet and Adam Beer Colacino on guitar makes for a great opener.  With it's Latin influence, I Don't Know About You, is a super track showing Javanfar's vocals, and Tom Moffett on trumpet and Moligun on bari really set this track off. Very nice. Memphis Minnie's bluesy, Bad Luck Woman has a cool feel fired by Jay Swinnerton's piano work and stylistic guitar work by Fraser Melvin. One of my favorites is Spinach Song with it's rag feel. Javanfar's vocals are perfect and with strong bass, cool rhythm guitar and kazoo...perfect. Boogie track, Went Down, has a real nice feel with a great bass line, strong trumpet soloing by Moffett. Very cool. Wrapping the release is Ay La Bah, a blues rocker with punchy horns and cool vocals. Moffett sets down a real nice trumpet solo and Melvin's guitar work is smart. Super closer for a cool release.

Jason Buie - Driftin' Heart - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Driftin' Heart, from Jason Buie, and I really like it. Opening with loping blues driver, Fool From The Very Start, Buie shows great feel and tone, backed by John Hunter on drums, George Fenn on bass and Dave Webb on keys. Excellent! On House Party, a cool boogie with a walking bass line, Buie definitely hits a nice groove. His guitar soloing is slick, complimented nicely by a cool piano solo by Webb. Jump track, Westcoast Daddy, is fluid and rocking! R&B track has a fat thumb of New Orleans giving Buie a great opportunity to show his vocal prowess and stinging blues riffs. Very nice. another R&B flavored blues track, Suits Me To A Tee, has a great bottom and clean, articulate guitar runs. Albert King's guitar is channeled big time on 12 O'Clock Check Out. Heavy bends and beautiful phrasing makes this one of my favorites on the release. Wrapping the release is Jesse Mae Robinson's Cold, Cold Feeling. Buie really lays it open on this one with blistering riffs floating in a lush sea of B3 by Webb. Excellent closer for a really strong release.

Martin Goyette - Big Beets - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Big Beets, from Martin Goyette, and it's got pure soulful style. Opening with a cool guitar intro courtesy of Jim Bland,  singer, songwriter and harp player, Martin Goyette,  pounces on St. John Morning Blues, like my assistant on a muffin. With an interesting New Orleans style, driven by Jarrod Atkins on bass and really spiced up by the stumble drumming of Louis-Etienne Drouin this is a way nice opener. Night Out flashes a R&B style and Goyette's vocals are nicely suited. Stylistic guitar playing by Bland gives the track balance. Very cool. I really like the undertone of Rolling with it's ominous bass line and punctual key work by Chris Trauchner. I've only heard on guy who successfully pulls off vocals like this and it's Joe Cocker. Very nice. Fusion track, As Long As We're In Town, has a great bass line, accented by Trauchner on keys and tight drum work of Drouin. MaryPier Guilbeault and Goyette blend vocals nicely making this one of my favorites on the release. Goyette shows off his harp skills nicely over a great walking bass line on That's The Way She Does It and Trauchner's piano work is tops. I like the laid back guitar approach on No More Room and Goyette's powerful growl pitted with the angelic backing vocals of Guilbeault are terrific. Wrapping the release is Unwind, a really hot with smoky lead vocals and rich backing vocals. The ever present bass line of Atkinson, total melody, soulful guitar playing by Bland and cool harp work by Goyette makes this a great closer for a quietly excellent release.

Artist Spotlight: Vancouver's The Mojo Stars

Formed almost ten years ago, Vancouver’s The Mojo Stars wasted no time establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the local blues scene. With deep roots in blues and soul, combined with a rock driven edge, this multi-talented band has been collecting a large following starting from their debut performance at Vancouver International Jazz Festival to their upcoming tour of 2017.

Comprised of front man Randy Clarke, guitarist Mark Rankin, and later including local heavyweights, drummer Loren Etkin (Long John Baldry) and bassist Lee Oliphant, the band’s first year saw them playing at local clubs, pubs, casinos and private events. In 2009, they recorded their first CD, Devil’s Advocate, a collection of ten original songs penned by Clarke and Rankin. The album received extensive airplay and was featured on blues radio programs in Canada, the US and Europe.

The end of 2010 saw the group on hiatus, but two years later they returned reinvigorated, adding new members, B3 player Kenny Boychuck (long time Jerry Doucette collaborator) and sax man Tom Gould to the lineup. Playing their return gig at the newly- opened Columbia in New Westminster, The Mojo Stars sold out the 500-seat-room and treated both old and new fans to the freshly written material.

Now, The Mojo Stars have released their new album Under The Influence (February 17, 2017). The 11-track recording features six live cuts and is laden with catchy, heavy riffs, Stax-like grooves and soulful vocals. The Mojo Stars will be performing locally to celebrate the release and heading out on tour later in 2017.

“Under The Influence is feel good blues, a lively mixture of 5 studio and 6 live cuts, and the energy of the performances is infectious… The band is tight, the performances are solid and occasionally inspirational.  Under The Influence is capable of heavy lifting if you’re feeling down and your soul needs a boost… what could be better than that?” – Gonzo Online/The Rock Doctor

“Their music is adorned with a powerful and effective combination of  dynamic rock, funk, soul and blues, and such fusion guarantees above all a great and inspired musical story.” – Blues Corner / Soundguardian
