Tour Underway
Anthony Gomes has been carving out his own space
as an unapologetically rock-influenced bluesman and songwriter since first
coming to national attention in the 1998. Gomes’ new record, Peace, Love &
Loud Guitars, is the culmination of a life spent honoring blues traditions
while never losing sight of his own identity. He writes memorable new songs
that exist somewhere between Willie Dixon and Billy Gibbons. He stands his
ground as a creative artist, not a derivative history lesson, and is eager to
push the blues back into the mainstream.
Originally
from Toronto, Canada, Gomes relocated to Chicago in the late 90’s. During a brief stint as a sideman for Magic Slim and the
Teardrops, Gomes put together his own group and won the first annual Buddy
Guy’s Legends “Best Unsigned Blues Band” competition in 1998. Later that year,
Gomes released his debut CD, “Blues in Technicolor,” which introduced him as a
guitar-slinger loaded with impressive firepower. On 2002's “Unity”, he
accomplished the album's title with a heavy mix of styles leading Bandit Blues
Radio to name it one of the “Top 30 Essential Blues Albums” of all time. Gomes
was elevated to the top of the blues field just one year later when BluesWax
Magazine named him “Artist of the Year,” a nomination he would claim for
several years in a row due to his endless commitment and touring. “Music Is the
Medicine” (2006) peaked at number four on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart,
only to be outdone by LIVE (2008) debuting at number one. The accolades
continued, with “Up 2 Zero” (2012), “...Before The Begining” (2013) and
Electric Field Holler (2015) all claiming real estate on Billboard’s Top 10
Album chart and critics ‘best of’ lists.
Gomes
has taken his blues to 17 countries and performed with luminaries like B.B.
King, Buddy Guy, Robert Plant, Heart, Sammy Hagar, Joe Bonamassa, .38 Special,
Jonny Lang, Robert Cray, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. His high-level guitar, vocal,
and songwriting skills have made him one of the top drawing artists in the
blues/rock world. His 2015 release Electric Field Holler, debuted at Number
Three on the Billboard Blues Chart and he has had five records make the Top Ten
there, including 2008’s Live, which debuted at Number One and his song “Love
Sweet Love” has racked up over 3.5 million plays on Spotify.
Fresh from his victory at the European Blues Awards for “Best
Musician/Live Performance” comes Anthony’s latest Peace, Love & Loud Guitars.
He bares heart and soul on “Come Down,” a modern work song with the startling
plea “Come down from heaven B.B. King, cause this kingdom has no king.” “White
Trash Princess” describes a princess from “Texarkana” who “keeps a loaded gun,
right next to her bible,” for a memorable aural portrait of a femme fatale.
Gomes always crafts memorable content, with the grinding slow drag “Blues in
the First Degree” a prime example. Over industrial strength crunch guitars he
modulates his voice from accusingly corrosive to purringly sweet while a
soaring guitar solo with cascading finger tapping nails the indictment. Gomes
waxes tender on “You Are Amazing”, a classic R&B ballad that should become
a standard. The anthemic blues-rock of the hopeful title track could be a new
motto for the post-Woodstock generation, replacing the “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’
roll” hedonism of yore. Acknowledging the past, Gomes pays tribute to Robert
Johnson while creating his own crossroads legend on “Stealin’ from the Devil.”
Anthony Gomes has nothing left to prove while leaving all his passion on the
table. Nonetheless, he continues striving to not only find the legendary “lost
chord,” but the ultimate combinations of words, notes and performance.

Johnny & The Headhunters - That's All I Need - New Release Review
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, That's All I Need, from Johnny & The Headhunters and it's quite good. Opening with Magic Sam's, That's All I Need with it's rocking Latin beat Johnny Ticktin on lead guitar and vocal shows why Louisiana Red had him as his lead player. With Pete Kanaras on bass, Robbie MaGruder on drums and Tam Sullivan on keys, this is a cool opener. Chet Atkin's Chicken House maintains it's two step feel with solid drum rhythm by Clark Matthews and organ by Tam Sullivan. On Lowell Fulsom's rock n roller, Rock Em Dead, Brian McGregor sets the pace on bass with Matthews on drums and Johnny's own guitar and vocal work really shines. Whipping out the slide on Elmore James' Shake Your Money Maker, Johnny really has the joint jumping on one of my favorites of the release. Another Magic Sam track, All My Whole Life, has terrific pace and feel. Johnny's vocals are warm and his guitar riffs tight. Very cool. Wrapping the release is Collins Mambo, a super instrumental with Johnny doing Albert Collins and he shows great style and feel. This is an excellent closer for a solid release.

Blueskitty Records artist: Michele D'Amour and the Love Dealers - Wiggle Room
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Wiggle Room, from Michele D'Amour and the Love Dealers and it's a cool mix of blues, pop and rock. Opening with Falling Down, a solid rocker with Patrick McDanel on driving bass, Jeff Cornell on guitar, Dave Delzotto on drums, Brian Olendorf on keys and Noel Barnes on sax, all supporting the lead vocal of Michelle D'Amour McDaniel. Shuffle track, Sweet Lovin Man showcases Michelles vocal work and a solid sax solo by Barnes. With it's walking bass line, Nothing To No One has a solid melody and the somber trumpet lines of Greg Lyons set the track off nicely and highlights really nice piano lead by Olendorf. Rocker, Been So Long has great energy with slicing guitar riffs from Cornell and solid organ work by Olendorf. Worthy is a moody ballad with a particularly nice sax solo by Barnes. Wrapping the release is Hard Times, a definite pop/radio style track but with a strong melody and instrumentation, a perfect closer for the set.

Wienerworld Presentation: Down Home Blues - New York, Cincinnati & The North Eastern States - Tough Enough - New Release Review
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Down Home Blues - New York, Cincinnati & The Northeastern States - Tough Enough from Wienerworld Presentations and it's really terrific. This 4 cd sent is accompanied by a 80 page cd sized book that has extensive bios, photographs and really nice record labels making this an incredible package. Opening is Alabama born, Wilbert Thirkield or Big Chief Ellis who taught himself to play piano at his aunt's house. His offerings here include Big Chief's Blues and I Love You Baby with authentic blues roots sounds, solid piano and vocals. North Carolina born, Seth Richard, known as Skoodle Dum Doo and Sheffield contributes strong country blues in Tampa Blues and Gas Ration Blues with great vocals, yelps, harp and guitar. In essential Piedmont style, guitarist Gabriel Brown is smooth and creamy delivering some of the best roots blues that you've never heard. Excellent! Chicago born, Bob Camp and His Buddies really gets the boogie woogie going on Gonna Pitch a Boogie with rolling piano and super lead guitar. Irene Wiley's Boa Hog Blues is classic female blues vocals from the time with the seductive play and strong vocals and in this case backed by strong piano and guitar accompaniment. Digging into the low down blues with Big Chief on Poor Man's Blues and Mr. Radio Announcer, Big Chief with the fancy finger work of Brownie McGhee on guitar. Hot piano boogie, Fred's Boogie Woogie is great track with Louisiana born Fred Dunn on vocal and piano. Rosita Chicken Lockhart has a different kind of polish backed by Andy Johnson and his trio. With real country styling, Allen Bunn (Tarhill Slim) sings Somebody Changed The Lock and You're A Little Too Slow accompanying himself with tight guitar riffs. Very fine. Brownie McGhee, accompanied by Big Chief on piano plays How Can I Love You and My Bulldog Blues followed by Sonny Terry's classic harp sounds and vocals on Telephone Blues and Tell Me Tell Me. This is a really terrific assemblage of artists and music and my descriptions only an abbreviated description of one of 4 discs. Each disc includes additional artists and each disc is as good as the first. This really is an amazing package. Other artists include, John Tinsley and Fred Holland, Gabriel Brown, Hank Kilroy, Alonzo Scales, Sunny Jones, Doug Quattlebaum, Otis Hinton, Jimmy Newsome, Robert Henry, Doctor Gaddy and his Orchestra, Square Walton, Cousin Leroy, Jack Dupree, Eddie Riff, Mojo Watson, Jesse and Buzzy, Little Red Walter, Emright and Mattie, Kine Morgan, Little Boyd and the Blues Bees, Guitar Luther, Guitar Nubbit, Guitar Crusher, and Curley Mays.

On The Air Records artist: Lawrence Lebo - Old School Girl - New Release Review
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Old School Girl, by Lawrence Lebo and it's different . Opening with You've Got A Secret, a cool blues number along the lines of Thrill is Gone with Lawrence Lebo on vocal, Denny Croy on bass, Steve Mugalian on drums, Larry David on warm organ and with crisp guitar work by Tony Mandracchia. On T-Bone Walkers classic, Stormy Monday, Lebo applies her own vocal spin with real nice harp work by David. Double time bass lines by Croy really add to the tension and Mandracchia's guitar lines are fluid and interesting. Very nice. New Orleans flavored, Stop Shouting Your Business, is one of my favorite tracks on the release with Carl Byron on accordion, and snappy drum work by Mugalian giving Lebo a clear path for her best vocal efforts on the release. R&B track, Happy Anniversary, Baby is another of my favorite tracks with Lebo's vocals displaying a special sparkle and sweet, subdued solo lines by Mandracchia and bluesy harp runs by David. Wrapping the release is New Orleans flavored Stop Shouting Your Business based around a tight drum riff by Mugalian and featuring a cool accordion solo by Byron making for a strong closer on a solid release.

Terry Blersh - Play It All Day - New Release Review
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Play It All Day, from Terry Blersh and it's a nice mix of cool tracks. Opening with Treat Me Right with it's Latin rhythm, Blersh on lead vocal flashes some real tasty guitar riffs over Shamakah Ali on drums, Collin Barnett on bass Michael Fonfara on Hammond and lance Anderson on piano. Nice opener. Charging right into R&B track, It's All Right, this track is all about rhythm with Garth Vogan on bass, Al Cross on drums, Anderson on keys, Art Avalos on percussion and smoky sax work by Gene Hardy. The vocal blending of Blersch and John Finley is really super. With a fusion of jazz and R&B and slick guitar lead, title track, Play It All Day, is a top radio choice with really nice backing vocals by Quisha Wint. The Girl Outside My Window has a cool island/reggae/tex mex feel with John Mays on vocal and Denis Keldie on accordion. Boogie track, King Creole has a super stride with solid vocals, tight bass lines by Dennis Pinhorn and stylized guitar work by Blersh with nicely articulated piano work by Anderson and nice horn compliment by Simon Wallis. Tex Mex track, Early Morning Rain has a particularly soothing feel with soft vocals and harmonies and mandolin by Jimmy Bowskill, Keldie on accordion and rimshots by Cross. very nice. One of the nicest tracks on the release is ballad, Only One with an extremely rich melody and certainly the best vocal track on the release with only minimal backing. Excellent! Wrapping the release is I'll See You In My Dreams with a cool "Chet Atkins" feel. Accompanied by Bowskill on mandolin, this is a super closer for a really entertaining release.

Connor Ray Music artist: Trudy Lynn - Blues Keep Knockin' - New Release Review
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Blues Keep Knockin', from Trudy Lynn and it's solid blues. Opening with two stepping, Blues Ain't Nothin' featuring Bob Lanza on guitar, Steve Krase on harp, Terry Dry on bass, and Matt Johnson on drums. With powerful vocals and a driving bottom, a solid opener. On Jimmy Rogers track, That's Alright, Lynn gets into a solid groove and Randy Wall on piano and Krase on harp lay down nice solos. One of my favorite tracks on the release is One Monkey Don't Stop No Show with clever lyrics, and hot horn work by Dan Carpenter on sax and Jim brady on trumpet. Another powerful track, I Sing The Blues finds Lynn really digging in vocally, with clean guitar work by David Carter. Again Bob Lanza's tasty guitar work comes into play on Pitiful, a super slow blues number. Lynn milks every drop of juice out of this track, working Lanza into a nice guitar frenzy. Very nice. Hot sax work by Carpenter and smart piano soloing by Wall give this When I Been Drinkin' real juice. Wrapping the release is Would It Make Any Difference, a country style ballad. Lynn's pure vocal styling, supported by Krase and featuring Carolyn Wonderland on guitar make this a solid closer for another solid release from Lynn.

Keith Stone with Red Gravy - New Release Review
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Keith Stone with Red Gravy : Blues with a Taste of New Orleans, from Keith Stone and it's quite good. Opening with jazz blueser, Ain't That The Blues, Stone is up front on lead vocal and guitar spiced up by Brent Johnson on slide and backed by Tom Worell on keys, Kennan Shaw on bass, and Eddie Christmas on drums. Digging in the funk on Love Don't Put Me Down, Shaw really sets a super groove. This is one of those tracks that really makes you wanna move and Worell's keys matched with Shaw and Christmas on drums is hot. New Orleans saucy title track, Red Sauce has a super piano line and that perfect rhythm. Soloing by Worell and strong vocals by Stone give this track solid footing. Ballad, Crazy In Love With You, has a warm mix of organ and electric piano behind some of Stone's best vocals on the release, topped off by a soulful sax solo by Jimmy carpenter. Don't Count Me Out is a solid shuffle with a cool bottom courtesy Shaw. Tight drums and rich organ feel gives Stone a great platform for his guitar and vocal lead. Latin spiced, Blue Eyed Angel has really nice percussion work by Christmas, sprinkled with the bright piano work of Worell and the solid bass work of Shaw. Time To Move On has a great funky bottom that smells like New Orleans. Stone develops a real lather here on guitar and vocal just in time for Carpenter to blow out some rad sax and trade off with Stones guitar soloing. Very cool. Slower blues track, Hard To Have The Blues is one of my favorites on the release with soulful vocals and focused guitar work. Stone really steps up on this one, laying out the blues six string style, complimented by just the right amount of piano and organ. Wrapping the release is another deeply New Orleans flavored, Something In The Water, with excellent percussion/bass exchange and that familiar piano roll. Nice closer for a solid release.

Velvet Space Love - Tomislav Goluban, Featuring Toni Staresinic - New release Review
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Velvet Space Love, by Tomislav Goluban, featuring Toni Staresinic and it's quite unusual for items I review. Opening with Zero Gravity, a somewhat spacey, atmospheric, composition featuring Goluban playing soulful harmonic melody over Staresinic's synth work. Space Drive is a continuation of a sonic fusion with what sounds like computer rhythm, Theremin, atmospheric keys and harp and guitar soloing. Very nice. One of my favorite tracks on the release is The Busiest Woman I've Ever Loved with a crisp jazz like rhythm. Goluban solos nicely over the key work of Staresinic backed by snappy drum work of Igor Vugrek, and bass of Damjan Grbac and punched up by Zvonimir Bajevic on trumpet, Robert Pulgar on sax and Mario Sinck on trombone. Very nice. Zero Gravity, Space Drive and Tsmk all get remixes with an emphasis on electronica, my favorite being Tsmk. Wrapping the release is Man With A Harmonica, an interesting track with orchestral style backing by Staresinic and wailing harp by Goluban. This is actually quite interesting. Looking for something different...this may be it!

Whiskey Bayou Records artist: Damon Fowler - The Whiskey Bayou Sessions - New Release Review
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Whiskey Bayou Sessions, from Damon Fowler and it's quite good. Opening with a modern take on James Brown style, It Came Out Of Nowhere, with it's cool back beat, Fowler's solid vocals, nicely stylized guitar soloing and backing by Todd Edmunds on bass, Justin Headley on drums, and Tab Benoit on rhythm guitar. Excellent opener. Fairweather Friend has some real funky juju on it with a really nice bottom and a guitar lead that really sits in the pocket. Johnny Nash's Hold Me Tight gets a real cool upbeat shuffle rhythm and a new life. This is a cool interpretation by Fowler with country flavored picking giving the track just that right amount of spice. Little Walter's Up The Line has a really strong drive and with just the right touch of guitar is set to get you moving in your seat if not on your feet. So you're itching for some of that famous Fowler slide work...wait no longer. Ain't Gonna Rock With You No More is a straight blues rocker with mean intention slide work by Fowler. Very nice. On traditional track, Just A Closer Walk With Thee, Fowler crosses into both religious and country genres and with nicely expressive lap steel work. Very cool. Another track with a nice funk and a taste of The Dead is Running Out Of Time with rhythmic vocals and lap steel guitar. Wrapping the release is easy shuffle, Florida Baby with some long range sliding. With it's quiet, subdued pace and wailing slide sound, it's an ideal closer for a really nice release.
