Legacy artist: North Mississippi Allstars - Prayer for Peace - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Prayer For Peace, North Mississippi Allstars and it's terrific! Opening with title track, Prayer for Peace, brothers Luther (guitar and vocal) and Cody (drums, piano, synth bass, programming and vocals) Dickinson are back and stronger than ever. Joined by Oteil Burbridge, Graeme Lesh, Sharisse Norman, Danielle Nicole, Dominic Davis and Sharde Thomas this track has honest roots. Need To Be Free is an intense track with a heavy bass line and wild, frantic guitar riffs. One of my favorites! RL Burnside track, Miss Maybelle is a stripped down Juke Joint kind of blues track with simple drum and razor sharp slide work. Very strong! Run Red Rooster is a super blues rocker with a great driving guitar riff and tight drums. Dickinson's vocals are concise and his guitar playing ruthless. Sit still during this one! Twenties folk track, Stealin' is covered here with a slight rock overtone and slick slide work. Just the right spin for this classic. Another of my favorites on the release is Deep Ellum, another traditional folk track with a swampy, funky, bluesy feel. Cody's piano work plays nicely against Luther's stellar slide work on this nicely laid back track. R.L. Burnside's Bird Without A Feather is off the charts. Cody really hits the spot with  drums and Luther's grinding guitar riffs soar! Excellent! In a fusion between contemporary music and primitive blues, Mississippi Fred and Rev Gary are smiling at this adaptation of their traditional track, You Got To Move. Another RL Burnside track, Long Haired Doney, is another exceptional track. These guys have a knack to milk every drop of blues from a track and this is no exception. Keeping it's original blues feel but pushing it to the max with driving drums and relentless guitar riffs, this it really terrific! Traditional folk track, Bid You Goodnight, maintains some of the jam feel put on it by The Dead, but also maintains some of the innocence of the original track, all spun up in the Allstar's web. Very nice. Wrapping the release is a remix of Prayer For Peace with synth bass work by Cody and traditional blues vocals by Luther and Sherde'. Very cool conclusion to one of the best releases I've heard this year.

Del Mundo Records artists: Martin Harley and Daniel Kimbro - Static In The Wires - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Static In The Wires, from Martin Harley and Daniel Kimbro and I really like it. Opening with One Horse Town, Martin Harley on vocal and guitars is joined by Daniel Kimbro on bass, vocal, guitar and piano and Derek Mixon on drums for a really nice opener. It's not often that something puts me in mind of early Leon Russell but Harley's vocal phrasing and feel does and it's terrific! Jerry Douglas is featured on dobro on Feet Don't Fail Me Now, an easy going country influenced acoustic blues track. Postcard From Hamburg is an exceptional acoustic ballad with lushly crafted vocal blending. Excellent! Sweet & Low shows exceptional craftsmanship in melody and execution. Harley and Kimbro fit together like a hand and glove. My Lover's Arms has a warm country feel with solid vocals and super sweet slide work by Harley. Dancing On The Rocks has a cool, western feel with spring and well blended vocals. With a cool, theatrical presentation, Trouble relies heavily on the lumbering bottom and super Weissenborn slide work. Harley has a great sense of timing and his vocal presentation works really nicely with the bass and piano of Kimbro. Bluesy, This Little Bird has the tension and sensitivity of St. James Infirmary. Harley's vocals and slide guitar work in the spotlight and nicely showcased by warm dark backing vocals, piano, bass and drums. Really nice. Another track with a light footed western feel is I Need A Friend. With fleet acoustic picking and clean vocal blending, this release just keeps getting deeper. Wrapping the release is Mean Old City - Part 2, a solid blues number with a great dancing bass line. Soulful vocal delivery and quiet tension on slide guitar. This is a really cool closer for a particularly cool release.

811 Gold Records artist: Laura Tate - Let's Just Be Real - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Let's Just Be Real, from Laura Tate and it's a light jazzy smooth. Opening with Steve Bruton's Nobody Get's Hurt, vocalist, Laura Tate baits you in with her warm voice, backed by Terry Wilson on bass, Billy Watts on guitar, Jeff Paris on keys, Tony Braunagel on drums, Lee Thornberg on brass, Paulie Cerra on sax and Leslie Smith on percussion. I always like when music is nicely woven like a fine fabric and this track is just that. Original soul track, If That Ain't Love, has a strong radio feel with a catchy melody, nice sax work and an interesting rhythm. Cerra lay out a real nice sax solo on this track and backing vocals add nicely to the mix. lightly salted Latin rhythm on Can't Say No has a great feel and Watts' guitar solo is particularly nice. Thin Lizzy's Boys Are Back In Town gets a balladeer's rework and I find it quite nice. I feel that it will appeal strongly to the pop radio market. With it's orchestral arrangement, Still Got The Blues is a really nice showcase for Tate's vocals and the horns do a really nice job warming the track. Watts lays down a particularly nice job playing a cleanly articulated guitar solo as a highlight in the track. With Teresa James joining on vocals, I'll Find Someone Who Will has a cool jazz/rock feel like one associated with Sting. Another nice sax solo by Cerra and tight brass work by Thornberg dresses this track nicely. I Need A Man is another sultry blues track with particularly nice brass work by Thornberg. With strong piano work by Paris this track strengthens the release ever further. Wrapping the release is pop rocker, Wildest Dreams, a definite radio track and possible movie theme. Tate is enjoying herself and I think you will too.

Jeff Dale & Jeff Stone - The Southside Lives - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Southside Lives, from Jeff Dale & Jeff Stone and it's modern form of simple blues. Opening with Honeyboy Story, Jeff Dale on guitar and vocal and Jeff Stone on harp grind out a delta style blues as stripped down as two guys get but with a rap style vocal. Interesting. On title track, The Southside Lives, Dale strums warm, jazz like chords under his vocals accompanied by Stone on harp. Hooked Up To A Plow has the simplicity of country music with a blues twist. With slide on Cigar Box guitar, Dale gives the track a southern flair. Glistening cigar box slide work on traditional blues track, The Bus Broke Down along with solid blues harp work by Stone makes this my favorite track on the release. Earthy, Mud On My Shoes, is a solid delta blues entry featuring some of Dale's best vocals on the release and cool supporting harp and guitar. Wrapping the release is the comical, Broke and Burned, (I Hope I'll Be In Heaven, Before The Devil Knows I'm Dead) with Leadbelly like deliver. A cool closer for a cool release.

Bahool Records artist: John McNamara - Rollin' With It - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Rollin' With It, from John McNamara and it's smooth. Opening with R&B flavored One, Two of a Kind, John McNamara on lead vocal and guitar sets a terrific stage. Backed by Steve Potts on drums, Michael Toles on guitar, James "Jimi" Kinard on bass, Lester Snell on keys, Marc Franklin on trumpet, Lannie McMillan on tenor sax and Jim Spake on bari sax, these guy have a great mix of rock and blues. With a feel of Little Willie John Bad Reputation swings. Franklin really adds a nice punch and McMillan and Spake bottom. Steve Cropper like guitar riffs adds that gritty feel that makes the track great. Soul track, Ask Me Nothing (But about the Blues) really showcases McNamara's voice nicely and the sax work of Spake adds a nice heft. I really like the guitar work of McNamara on this track in particular making it one of my favorites on the release. Slinky, Under The Weight Of The Moon, weaves nicely with rich horn work blending R&B with stinging guitar riffs reminiscent of Texas style blues. Very nice. With horns blazing, Security really takes a turn more in the direction of Wilson Pickett. This release is really hot and McNamara has great feel. With a full horn section call and responding with guitar, this track has it all. Another of my favorite tracks on the release is Blind Man. I really like McNamara's vocals in balance with the horns and the soulful rhythm is spot on, not to mention McNamara's guitar punctuation... think Muscle Shoals sessions. You Wouldn't Wanna Know is a powerful track with a driving beat, bluesy guitar riffs and tight vocals. Wrapping the release is the beautiful, Suffering with the Blues. With rich orchestration and McNamara way out front, this track is an excellent closer for a superior release.

Jim Roberts and the Resonants - Beneath the Blood Moon - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Beneath the Blood Moon, from Jim Roberts and the Resonants and it's cool pop blues. Opening with the title track, Beneath the Blood Moon, Roberts on vocal and slide, joined by Mike Harvey on drums, Tony Jack Grigsby on bass and Mike Finnigan on keys sets the pace for this cool new release. Dog Done Bit My Baby gives Roberts a nice opening to show his slide work with a a cool blues rocker. Rick Hollander joins on bass laying down a driving bass line. Funky, Tupelo Fool, has a real nice groove with gritty vocals and a cool slide refrain. Ballad, May All Your Regrets Be Small, has the standout radio track on the release with solid lyrics, nice lead vocals, a sweet melody and the addition of Nathan Rivera on accordion. Another solid radio track, Southern Hospitality has just the right blend of smooth vocals, slide guitar and cool rhythm. One of my favorite tracks on the release, Dark Down On The Delta, has a laid back rock rhythm and really clean slide soloing.  Wrapping the release is country blues track, The Hell Hound's Due, with finger picked resonator and a stripped down country blues sound. With Felix Flanagan on harp, this is a real nice closer for an smart new release.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band's "Lay It On Down" premieres at Billboard; new album out 8/4 on Concord Record

TITLE TRACK FROM
KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD BAND’S
LAY IT ON DOWN PREMIERES VIA
BILLBOARD

NEW ALBUM OUT AUGUST 4 ON
CONCORD RECORDS

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES THIS SUMMER

“[Shepherd] is a guitarist who can easily mesmerize an audience with his playing ability and through his passionate and energetic solos.”—The Huffington Post

The title track from Lay It On Down, five-time Grammy nominee and critically acclaimed guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s forthcoming ninth album, is now premiering via Billboard; listen/share the track at http://bit.ly/2ssLzqU. Billboard notes, “The gentle ‘Lay It On Down’—which Shepherd co-wrote with ‘Blue On Black’ collaborators Mark Selby and Tia Sillers—certainly represents something different for Shepherd and company.” Shepherd explains, “It’s, like, a midtempo ballad, which surprises some people, but I love ballads. I grew up in the era of the power ballad. That was the biggest thing on the radio when I was a teenager, those rock ‘n’ roll ballads. So I’m a sucker for a good ballad and wanted to have one on this record.”

Lay It On Down is due August 4 on Concord Records. Recorded at Echophone Studios in Shepherd’s hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana and produced by Shepherd with Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Natasha Bedingfield, Kate Voegele), the album was largely recorded live in the studio to analog tape.

Shepherd’s band on Lay It On Down features his long-time lead vocalist Noah Hunt, the rhythm section from Shepherd’s supergroup side project The RIDES, Chris Layton (drums) and Kevin McCormick (bass), and keyboardist Jimmy McGorman. “I’m proud of the album we have delivered to the fans and I think they'll be excited by what they hear,” notes Shepherd. “The band we’ve assembled did a fantastic job bringing these songs to life and conveying the musical message to the listener. Now we are looking forward to bringing this new music to the live show to watch it develop even more.” Shepherd further discusses the writing/recording process in the new album’s video trailer, watch/share it at https://youtu.be/xW6HfiJ-WYQ.

Recently, CMT Music premiered the video for the album’s first single, “Baby Got Gone;” watch/share the video at http://bit.ly/2qcQs6S.

Shepherd will celebrate the album’s release with a U.S. tour that kicks off August 9 in Westbury, NY. See below for a list of dates; additional shows to be announced shortly.

Lay It On Down finds Shepherd two decades into a recording career that began when he was 16. Shepherd has sold millions of albums worldwide and, in addition to his five Grammy nominations, he has won two Billboard Music Awards, a pair of Orville H. Gibson awards, the Blues Foundation’s Keeping The Blues Alive award and two Blues Music awards. He’s had six #1 blues albums and a string of #1 mainstream rock singles, and his acclaimed documentary project 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads was the top-selling blues album of 2007. Shepherd’s last release, 2014’s Goin’ Home (Concord Records), debuted at #25 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart and spent several weeks at #1 on the Billboard Blues chart.

ACTUAL WOLF signs to Red House -premiere his cover of Haley's "Hometown" today at the Current New album

ACTUAL WOLF JOINS THE RED HOUSE RECORDS ROSTER
New album "Faded Days" out 9/15 on vinyl and 6/02 via limited-edition cassette and all digital providers
Pre-order at iTunes and Amazon

"a mix between the spirit of the Rolling Thunder Revue & Thunder Road era Springsteen w/ a little nod to solo Gene Clark & CSNY thrown in, Faded Days encapsulates an echoey brooding open-heartedness over twangy sensibility and 70’s folk purism" - GLIDE MAGAZINE

June 1, 2017: Red House Records is happy to welcome ACTUAL WOLF to its roster and announce his new album, Faded Days. Lush and expansive, Faded Days conjures the classic cosmic country albums of the past with its layered vocals and sweeping choruses.  A recording and touring musician for such artists/bands as Nikki Lane, Sun Kil Moon and Retribution Gospel Choir (featuring Alan Sparhawk of Low), ACTUAL WOLF is premiering his cover of fellow Minnesotan Haley's "Hometown" today at tastemaker station The Current; listen to it HERE. Faded Days will be released via limited-edition cassette and through all digital providers on June 2; the LP will be released on September 15.

The album plays out like a vintage record store find, with a care to storytelling and payoff choruses that are in scarce supply these days. Album highlights include the Springsteen-esque "Be My Love," which segues into the hazy vintage Neil Young and Crazy horse vibe of the first single, "Baby Please." "Little Runaway" is a classic rock radio cut (if you grew up in the 70s, that is) and the wistful title track speaks of lost opportunities and old relationships, with the chorus asking "Can you still get high?"

As to how he became the "Actual Wolf," he recounts: “My friend, who is a junior high gym/health teacher, came up with the name while we were riding in his truck. He said, “ya know… there are a lot of wolf bands but you, you’re the Actual Wolf.” A native of Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range, Actual Wolf made the move to Oakland, CA following federal charges in Minnesota on a cannabis bust (they were reduced). He's now one of the leading extract/hash makers in the Bay Area, working for a boutique provider for Harbourside Health Center growing rare/hard-to-cultivate strains.

Statement from ACTUAL WOLF:
Faded Days has been cultivated, cut and cured with the same patience as that of the grower. The album was written over two years in a spectrum of locations that Actual Wolf has called home at one point or another — Duluth (Minnesota, not Georgia), Brooklyn, Nashville and currently Oakland — the rich oils and aromatics resting in darkness and appropriately aged to bring them to a perfect state in a year-long distillation by engineer Brad Bivens in Minneapolis. The album is subtly informed by that breadth of different atmospheres as much as it is richly colored by the array of collaborators: Jeremy Hanson (Tapes 'n Tapes, Tungsten), Jake Hanson (Gramma's Boyfriend; 12 Rods; Alaska), Steve Garrington (Low, the Erik Berry Duo), Ditch Kurtz (a pedal steel guitarist from Nashville), with additional vocals by Al Church.

After all of that time, Faded Days is ready. Its distinctly emotional alkaloids are blissfully intoxicating, palliative and healing. And now that it is finished, a sort of finely crafted goodbye to the Faded Days of all of those other places and those people and events, it will only be a matter of time before ACTUAL WOLF cultivates and distills the more recent days of his current Oakland existence, though who knows how long this will take: you cannot put a timeline on true craft.

ACTUAL WOLF dates:
TH 6.08   St. Paul, MN - The Turf Club
SA 7.22   Shafer, MN - Franconia Sculpture Garden
much more to come!

Boris Garcia Navigates The Twists And Turns With AROUND SOME CORNER CD Out On July 14

Boris Garcia Navigates The Twists And Turns

With Their Musical Steering Wheel:

AROUND SOME CORNER

Out July 14 On Porchwerk Music

“Fusing Americana, Celtic, Bluegrass and Jam with pop sensibilities, Boris Garcia is alone in its self -created class” - Dirty Linen

On July 14, Philadelphia’s own Boris Garcia will release Around Some Corner on Porchwerk Music label for fans everywhere.  The band called on their secret weapon, Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth fame to take the role of producing the album. Carbone moves Boris Garcia’s songs of whimsy and emotion and molds them into complex compositions, making it look effortless.

Tim Carbone on Boris Garcia’s songwriters Jeff Otto and Bob Stirner – “As Lennon and McCartney did for The Beatles - they add just the right shadings to each other’s compositions to make the picture complete.”

Boris Garcia on Tim Carbone - “He visualized the music we had in our heads and made it appear on the disc. His experience and ridiculous musicality made it seem like we had George Martin in our midst, constantly pushing, screaming, laughing….stoking the embers and fluffing the froth. Boris Garcia’s journey to a great extent is about the relationship that we have maintained with Tim, both musically and in personal bond.”

Boris Garcia is seven very talented musicians: Jeff Otto on vocals and ukulele, Bob Stirner on vocals and guitars, Tim Kelly drums, percussion, Bud Burroughs mandolin, bouzouki, and accordion, Tom Hampton lap steel, Chip Denoyers on pedal steel and  EJ Simpson on bass. The group unknowingly created a new genre, which someone called “Outlaw Mystic – An Intoxicating Blend Of Americana, Bluegrass, and Pop.”

This multi-talented ensemble started out as a recording unit rather than a performing group and was more of a lark than a serious project at its inception. Jeff Otto was creating in the studio when he brought in Bob Stirner for some guitar help that soon expanded into its current line-up. The band then recruited Bud Burroughs on mandolin completing the strength of the lineup and forging the nucleus of the Boris Garcia “sound" with unforgettable melodies and honest storytelling.

As a songwriter, Stirner puts it, "Boris Garcia is a product of its combined influences, from Coltrane and Stockhausen to bluegrass and Celtic music, American roots to Jam. Our songs are rooted in Americana and Pop but with a Boris Garcia instrumental "treatment" that makes them more, well...Boris Garcia!"

“Boris Garcia has perfected the science of playing from the heart” – Relix

Recorded at Carbone’s studio in rural Pennsylvania the group hunkered down to create, Around Some Corner and bond once again. Here are a few highlighted songs:

“Knockin’ On Wood” opens up the album with a waltz as the singer longs for his love as his travels back from his journey. Their poetic lines of “I have left a trail of dust and blood” and “I saw her in my dreams for years - I saw her give me sons” flow over the walking melody bringing the listener in the song effortlessly. “Captain of The Crew” is almost a ship song that could be a storybook - a very detailed tune filled with flutes, recorders, and percussion. This band recalls Gordon Lightfoot and Pure Prairie League with their melodies, rhythms, and harmonies which are refreshing nowadays. “Message At Twilight” is the bluegrass closer, with the focus of the mandolin and ukulele that creates their version of the romantic Celtic sound. With that exclamation point ending, you want to hear more!

“The purity of the musicianship all-around renders Boris Garcia more than academics...” – All About Jazz

With constant comparisons from The Band to Doc Watson to Grateful Dead, Boris Garcia doesn’t mind the flattery but likes to expand on it with each release.  Starting with their 2005 debut, Boris Garcia’s Family Reunion (Porchwork), the band breaks the mold each time to impress fans and critics. Their second album, Mother's Finest released in 2006 to critical praise that led to appearances and rotation on WXPN and an invitation to play their hometown’s own Philadelphia Folk Festival which was a turning point for them as they branched out into other markets. Two others followed, Once More Into The Bliss and Today We Sail continuing their signature sounds and building a solid fan base. During these years they have enjoyed opening slots with New Riders of the Purple Sage, Little Feat, Railroad Earth, Jackson Browne, Hot Tuna, and David Bromberg.

The band will be performing all summer and into the fall so follow the caravan Around Some Corner and down the street as they lead the way!
