I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

CHICAGO BLUESMAN TORONZO CANNON SIGNS WITH ALLIGATOR RECORDS New Album Due In Early 2016 "Among the cream of the next generation of blues musicians making their name on the Chicago scene." --Blues & Rhythm "One of Chicago's new greats." --The Chicago Sun-Times
"Progressive as he
is rootsy...Slow, simmering riffs and smoldering licks."
-- Chicago Reader
On Saturday, June 13, Chicago
blues guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Toronzo Cannon, performing on the
main stage of the Chicago Blues Festival, announced to the crowd of over
100,000 that he had just signed with Alligator Records. He then tore into a
razor-sharp solo, layering the deepest Chicago blues with contemporary lyrics
and gospel-flavored vocals. The
Chicago Tribune lauded his performance, saying, "Cannon made
the most of his opportunity as a festival headliner to win over a new
audience. His extroverted guitar style and forceful singing voice sounded
especially compelling."
Cannon's first two albums,
released on Chicago's Delmark label, catapulted him from local newcomer --
and Chicago Transit Authority bus driver -- to one of the city's most
celebrated bluesmen. With his Alligator Records debut set for release in
early 2016, he knows more and more people are hearing his message: Chicago
blues is very much alive. According to Cannon, "To be on two
historic Chicago labels is huge. To be from Chicago and be signed to
Alligator is unreal. To be part of Alligator's history...I'm at a loss for
words."
Alligator president Bruce
Iglauer says, "I've watched Toronzo grow as a singer, player and
songwriter over the last few years. He's now become a major blues talent,
using the Chicago blues traditions as a launching pad to create his own
unique, and very contemporary, vision. His music comes right from the heart
of the city."
Cannon
was born in Chicago on February 14, 1968, and grew up in the shadows of
Theresa's Lounge, one of the city's most famous South Side blues clubs (and,
coincidentally, the place where Iglauer spent a lot of time). As a child,
Cannon would occasionally sneak a glance inside at Junior Wells or Buddy Guy
or whomever was making music. He heard plenty of blues growing up at his
grandfather's home, and listened to all types of popular music of the day.
He got his first guitar at age
22, and learned to play in short order. Although his first focus was reggae,
he found himself increasingly drawn to the blues. "It was dormant in me.
But when I started playing the blues, I found my voice." He learned
sounds, styles and licks from listening to Albert Collins, Hound Dog Taylor,
B.B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, Al Green, Jimi Hendrix, J.B. Hutto,
Lil' Ed and others.
He played as a sideman for
Wayne Baker Brooks and Joanna Connor before striking out on his own in 2001,
honing his skills as a bandleader, vocalist and performer. As a songwriter,
he writes about shared experiences with a keen eye for what's not obvious.
"Blues is truth-telling music," he says, "and I want my audience
to relate to my stories." As a singer, his impassioned vocals take his
songs to the next level.
Cannon has become one of Chicago's most recognized and most popular bluesmen through the sheer force of his music, his soul, his songs, and maybe most impressively, his passion for what he is doing. He's toured North America and Europe, all the while holding down his full-time job as a city bus driver. It isn't easy, but blues, like all of the Chicago greats who have come before him, is his calling. "Chicago blues is still alive," he says. "I'm not trying to carry a torch, but I am proud to be part of a movement, standing on the shoulders of every great Chicago blues musician who came first."

Robben Ford ‘Into the Sun’ Tour Rhythm Room, Phoenix, AZ USA 06/13/2015 - Ellisjames - Guest Writer
Robben Ford performed more than ninety minutes of
non-stop craftsmanship to a very appreciative desert town crowd at The Rhythm
Room, Phoenix, Arizona. The set list contained a pleasing baker’s dozen plus one
encore of songs both from his current release, ‘Into the Sun’ (Mascot Label Group, NY, NY USA) and a
potpourri selection from his vast catalog of work.
Perhaps the show was extra spirited as it was the last
stop on his current 2015 tour prior to departing for a few shows in France.
None-the-less, the sound mix and tone was amazing partly due to vintage amp and
obvious journeyman chops from Robben and the others. Each member of the group
more than held their own when given featured solos and as a unit throughout the
performance.
The set kicked into high gear with ‘Just Like It Is’ from
the 1997 Tiger Walk release followed up with ‘Howling At the Moon’ from the new
CD. Ford dove into an extensive bridge solo more than demonstrating his talent
and command of his rosewood-necked Telecaster.
2014’s A Day in Nashville cut, ‘Midnight Comes Too Soon’ preceded ‘Same
Train’ then ‘Rose of Sharon’ featuring guitarist, David Grisson who ripped into
his PRS as if it were the last song he was ever going to play. Great stuff!
Two more cuts from the current CD, ‘Rainbow Cover’ and
the female response favorite, ‘High Heels and Throwing Things’ were no less
than a guitar clinic for anyone who could follow the fret work by both Grissom
and Ford. The tempo changed into jazzy blues via the 2013 ‘Bring it Back Home
CD song ‘Slick Capers Blues’. This song
provided a chance for each band member to shine. Ford and Grisson took their turns then left the stage followed by
Bassist, Brian Allen and drummer,
Wes Little. Returning to finish ‘Capers’, the band took a breath, allowing Robben to switch to his sunburst Stratocaster for two songs from his ‘Renegade Creation’ Bullet release. ‘People Like Me’ and the soulful ‘Nazareth’ with Griss playing acoustic.

The back half of the show included ‘Indianola’ from the
Soul on Ten CD, the 2013 Fool’s Paradise and a wonderful and rousing version of
‘Lovin Cup’, first performed on stage by Ford in 1998 as part of the ‘Robben
Ford and the Blueline Authorized Bootleg’ and seen on the 2005 ‘New Morning,
The Paris Concert’ DVD.
The crowd was not about to go without an encore!
Graciously, the band sent everyone home with ‘All Over Again’. Thanks to the band and staff at the Rhythm
Room, unofficial home of the Phoenix Blues Society and owned/operated by
harmonica pro, Bob Corritore. Strong recommendations to catch Robben Ford and
band when they return from France and play California and Colorado in late July
and August before heading to the East Coast in the Fall.

Red Parlor Records artist: Scott Ellison - Elevator Man - New Release Review
I just received the newest release, Elevator Man, from Scott Ellison and it's quite entertaining. Opening with Holler For Help, an upbeat British invasion style track, Ellison leads on vocal and slide guitar joined by Charles Tuberville on bass. Arlene has that great SB Williamson drive reinforced by a solid bass line. Jimmy Markham lays down a real nice harp line followed by Ellison on guitar. Very nice! Slow and gritty, Behind That Smile, features nicely phrased guitar lines and warm backing vocals by Charles Tuberville and Marcy Levy making it one of the sweetest tracks on the release. Fishsticks and Jelly has a cool pace with foot stomp rhythm and real nice acoustic slide work. Title track, Elevator Man, has a bit of contemporary funk with a super slinky guitar solo. This track really moves and I really like Ellison's lead vocals as well as Levy's backing vocals on this track. Shuffle track, Jesus Loves Me (Baby Why Don't You), shows Ellison's stinging guitar riffs and a solid driving beat with Gary Gilmore on bass and Jamie Oldaker on drums. School Girl has a light Latin flavor and almost Billy Gibbons like vocals. Crisp, guitar riffs and cool beat drive this train. Put You Down has a cool guitar/vocal melody match and a Chicago feel. Hit It, Get It and Go is a real nice boogie track with Ellison staying right up front on vocal with emphasis on lyrics. Cool! Another slow paced blues track, Wear Out Your Welcome gives Ellison the opportunity to dig down and grab the guitar by the neck, pulling rich soulful lead lines at will. Very nice! I Thought I'd Be Gone has a two step rhythm with slide guitar smoothing it out to a blues rocking tempo. My Little Sheba is a hot little number with unusual vocals and paired guitar and vocal lead. With a bit of a raw feel, this track stands apart in a cool way. Wrapping the release is She's On My Trail, a standard 12 bar number with vocal/guitar call and response. Snarling guitar riffs and a driving rhythm make this a nice selection to complete the release.
