Music Maker artists: Boo Hanks with Dom Flemons - Buffalo Junction - New Recording Review

I just received a copy of one of the coolest traditional and Piedmont style blues recordings to hit the market in a long time. 83 year old Boo Hanks, who has played locally and worked in the tobacco fields of Virginia most of his life and Dom Flemons of the Carolina Chocolate Drops were recorded in 2006 and 2007 in mostly casual settings. The relaxed atmosphere and genuine love for the music comes through very strongly. Hanks has a unique vocal style and phrasing which is all but lost. The recording is made up of 12 traditional songs all which have been arranged by Hanks. The track list includes Railroad Bill; Drinkin' Wine, Spodie Odie (done by many artists but often associated with Hank Williams Sr.); Truckin' My Blues Away (a Blind Boy Fuller song); One Dime Blues; one of my favorites, Wild Geese Blues with a more serious pace (often associated with Gladys Bentley and Eddie Lang); Move To The Outskirts Of Town (which has been covered by many many artists including Big Bill Broonzy, Ray Charles and the Allman Brothers Band); Diddy Wah Diddy (written by Willie Dixon and made popular by Ry Cooder); Ain't Nobody Here But Me; Goin' Down To Cincinatti; Wanna Boogie Oogie; Girls Are Crazy About Me and My Captain Gone On Before. This is a thoroughly entertaining cd that seems to be over just as you put it in the player. If you like Piedmont style blues you can't go wrong with this great cd.

The New Blues Revolution (NBR) are on a righteous mission to bring their tasty high-energy musical hybrid of blues, rock, jazz and soul to Southern California's finer live music establishments as well as the rest of the United States and beyond.
The band is especially supportive of benefits and charities, with a show at the Freedom Coalition Festival in Irvine Lakes on July 21. Full NBR itinerary found below.
"What we witnessed was brilliant," wrote B. Noel Barr of Random Lengths Newspaper in a recent review of the band's House of Blues show. "The New Blues Revolution songs spoke to the listeners with authenticity...overall the group has the chops to get a crowd going and set the tone at any venue. They have the ability to go well beyond the boundaries of the greater Los Angeles area. (Front person Bill) Grisolia is great to watch. He works the stage like a playful tiger. You never know where he is going to take you..."

EDGAR'S BOOGIE - Edgar Hayes' Stardusters

Pianist and bandleader Edgar Hayes is best remembered today for his 1938 version of Hoagy Carmichael's ''Stardust,'' the only hit song for Hayes. The recording features his light, tinkling piano style and is still today considered to be the definitive version of that number.

Hayes attended college at both Fisk University in Nashville and Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio, where he earned a bachelor's degree in music. After graduation he made his professional debut with Fess Williams and in 1924 formed his own group, the Blue Grass Buddies. In early 1925 he went to work with the Lois B. Deppe Orchestra and late in the year led his own orchestra at the Ritz Hotel in Cleveland. In 1926 he played with Madison's Commodore Orchestra in Buffalo and in the spring of 1927 led his own Eight Black Pirates for the touring show Rarin' to Go. From late 1927 to 1930 Hayes led a group called the Symphonic Harmonists.

In 1931 Hayes joined the Mills Blue Ribbon Band and stayed until 1937, when he left and formed a new orchestra of his own. The new group featured many ex-Mills Blue Ribbon Band members and included, at various times, Joe Garland on tenor sax, Kenny Clarke on drums, and Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet. The orchestra recorded on Decca. After its 1938 success with ''Stardust'' Hayes took the band on a tour of Sweden and Belgium, where they also recorded on the Swedish Odeon label.

Failing to achieve another hit record after ''Stardust,'' Hayes disbanded his orchestra in 1941 and moved to California. There he formed a quartet called the Stardusters which played regularly on the West Coast until the early 1950s. Hayes continued to perform, mainly as a solo lounge act through the 1950s and 1960s. Edgar Hayes passed away in 1979.

Blues medley - JUKE BOY BONNER

Weldon H. Philip Bonner, better known as Juke Boy Bonner (March 22, 1932 – June 29, 1978) was an American blues singer, harmonica player, and guitarist. He was influenced by Lightnin' Hopkins, Jimmy Reed, and Slim Harpo. He described the bleak prospects of black urban existence in songs like "Life is a Nightmare", "Struggle Here in Houston" and "Going Back to the Country", accompanying himself on guitar, harmonica and drums in the self-sufficient one-man band mode of Joe Hill Louis and Dr. Ross
Born in Bellville, Texas, Bonner was one of nine children; his parents died while he was very young. Raised by a neighbor's family, he moved in with his older sister in 1945. At the age of twelve he taught himself the guitar. He gained the nickname "Juke Boy" as a youth, because he frequently sang in local bars accompanied by the juke box. Starting a musical career as teenager, he won the first prize at local disc jockey Trummie Cain's weekly talent show at the Lincoln Theater in Houston, Texas in 1948. Through this he secured a 15 minute radio slot on a show operated by record retailer Henry Atlas. After having three children with his wife, she left him to look after the children by himself.

Between 1954 and 1957 he recorded several singles for the Oakland, California based Irma record label, but not all were released at the time. In 1960 he recorded again, this time for the Goldband Records, Storyville Records, and Jan & Dill Records labels. In 1963 he was diagnosed with a large stomach ulcer, and had to have almost half of his stomach removed in surgery. The shock of this operation, plus the social climate of the times (which included civil rights riots and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy) led Bonner to begin writing poetry, some of which was published in the Forward Times weekly newspaper. Recovering from surgery, Bonner worked as an RCA record distributor in Houston. Once his strength returned he began playing gigs again in the local area.

In 1967 Bonner recorded his first album for the Flyright label. Chris Strachwitz's Arhoolie label released two albums, I'm Going Back to The Country (1968) and The Struggle (1969) (Arhoolie would later issue some of Bonner's unreleased 1967-1974 recordings on 2003's Ghetto Poet). Bonner recorded mostly original song material through his recording career. He was a guest at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival, the American Folk Blues Festival, and the Montreux Blues and Rock Festival. In 1972 he released an LP for Sonet Records, and in 1975 another one for the Houston based Home Cooking Records label. However, Bonner was not able to support himself from his music, due to little demand for his work. Although he would continue to play and record sporadically, he had no choice but to take a minimum wage job at a chicken processing plant in Houston
Bonner died in his apartment in 1978, aged forty-six, of cirrhosis of the liver.

I'm a Ram - BRIAN TAMBLING

Brian Tambling is preparing to release his debut album marking a huge stage in the career of the multi-talented guitarist. Brian, who lives on Curacao; Dutch Caribbean, has just put the final touches to the album and is now preparing for the imminent release that will hopefully build his fan base and get his music heard by more people than ever. The Album "Brian Tambling" consists of 11 original songs from Brian, each providing a combination with his high-energy guitar playing, melodious vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The rhythmic undercurrent bears testament to blues-rock playing, and the music is punctuated throughout with elements of blues, blues-rock and jazz. The album was recorded at Kadushi-Records on Curacao, and its creation was supported by bass and drums. It was produced by Brian and was post produced/mixed by Wietze Krikke. The album reveals the stunning array of influences that have found their way into Brian's music. Whilst his grounding came in blues, blues-rock – he began to get himself known whilst playing in venues throughout Ireland, The Netherlands, USA & Caribbean. Brian's life has certainly been full of experiences; his debut-album is a reflection of his background and influences over the years and is incorporated into his music.

Slow Movin Train - Bart Walker Band

Bart Walker’s debut, Who I Am, is a portrait of the Nashville-based guitar and vocal powerhouse as a dreamer, a fan, a survivor, a creative dynamo and, most of all, a one-man argument for the continued vitality and emotional heat of the blues.

A born virtuoso who began playing and singing at age four, Walker and his band — which includes ex-Stevie Ray Vaughan keyboardist Reese Wynans — make his original plucked-from-life tunes sound like classics, delivered with the same incendiary energy as the live performances that have won them a growing following in the South and Midwest.

With the release of Who I Am and Walker’s continuing on-stage exposure as country star Bo Bice’s six-string right-hand man, Walker is ready to claim his place as a bold young torchbearer in the national and international blues scene, with his own distinctive and gritty guitar sound and a dynamic voice dappled with honey and gravel.

“I truly and deeply love what I do,” he says, “This music has given me so much, and has so much to give, and I feel Who I Am is just the beginning of what I have to give back to it.”

"...I just started moanin' with them" - Alabama Slim's life in music

Alabama Slim, turning hardship into song

Alabama SlimListening to Alabama Slim on the phone, one thinks of old Southern Blues and Gospel music, his voice smooth like butter and as warm as hot chocolate. Hearing him sing is even better; he is truly one of the best Blues singers of his time. Born in Alabama at the end of the Great Depression, Slim fell in love with the Blues of Bill Broonzy and Lightnin' Hopkins. "I grew up listening to the old blues since I was a child. I spent summers with my grandparents who had a farm. Them old folks would get to moanin' while they worked, and I just started moanin' with them. That's where I learned to sing," he said.

Slim moved to New Orleans after Hurricane Betsy in 1956 and lived there up until he lost all of his possessions in the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina and had to move to Dallas. After the devastation of Katrina, he recorded "Mighty Flood," which illustrated the despair he felt after the Hurricane -- an alternative to the happy go-lucky man Slim usually is. He painted a riveting picture of the way New Orleans was "post apocalypse" and spoke through his music to every person who survived Katrina, but lost so much more. Since Katrina, Slim has produced more upbeat work - more representative of his nature, integrating New Orleans musicians and beats into the songs. He is now living back in the Crescent City and performing regularly.

Look for Slim's CD, Blue & Lonesome, to be available next week with new artwork!

Music Maker Intern Matt Dailey does Case Study on MM

Matt Dailey

This is Matt Dailey's second summer interning with Music Maker; he has spent the past year helping us with digitization of audio files. This summer he's also beginning work on his Master's paper for his graduate program in Library Science at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. For his paper he's decided to do a case study of utilizing an organizational program, Archivist's Toolkit, to organize Music Maker's vast archive.

The Toolkit has primarily been used at large academic institutions, but Matt wants to see if it would be a viable system for a small non-profit that is more focused on day-to-day operations. Through his work on this, we'll be able to see if this program would be feasible for Music Maker and could be the first step in making our archived materials accessible to the public online. We still have a long way to go, but Matt's work on the Toolkit will begin to organize all types of files (photos, video, audio, text) into one database to be searchable by artist.

Thanks Matt for all your hard work!

Diggin': "Have You Ever Plowed a Mule?"

Adolphus PerformingMule plowing probably doesn't figure in the life of most Parisians, but that didn't stop Adolphus Bell from asking them "Have You Ever Plowed a Mule?" Listening to him describe it makes it sound like a battle of willpower between mule and man. My money's on Adolphus in that struggle.

What's interesting about Adolphus is his DIY approach to the blues: he's his own singer, guitarist, AND drummer. In his words: "I got my guitar and I was playing and both my feet was going with the music. And it was like something hit me: go put some drums on them feet! I went down to a pawn shop and got me a bass drum and a high hat and came back up to that room. I started playing and the first song I played it scared me it sounded so good."

Any player who's had to wait on a flakey band mate to show for rehearsal can relate to the wisdom of this.

This original song was recorded in Paris in 2006, where Adolphus and other Music Maker artists performed at the renowned venue The New Morning.

Check it out!

Mother-In-Law - David "Honeyboy" Edwards

95-year-old Honeyboy Edwards performing at Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art, Clarksdale, Mississippi, on Sunday, April 17, 2011. Accompanied by Bill Abel (guitar) and Michael Frank (harmonica). David "Honeyboy" Edwards (June 28, 1915 – August 29, 2011) was a Delta blues guitarist and singer from the American South. Edwards was the last of the original Delta bluesmen[citation needed]before his 2011 death. Edwards was born in Shaw, Mississippi. Edwards was 14 years old when he left home to travel with blues man Big Joe Williams, beginning life as an itinerant musician which he led throughout the 1930s and 1940s. He performed with famed blues musician Robert Johnson with whom he developed a close friendship. Honeyboy was present on the night Johnson drank poisoned whiskey which killed him, and his story has become the definitive version of Johnson's demise. After Johnson's passing, Edwards knew and played with many of the leading bluesmen in the Mississippi Delta, which included Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Johnny Shines. He described the itinerant bluesman's life: On Saturday, somebody like me or Robert Johnson would go into one of these little towns, play for nickels and dimes. And sometimes, you know, you could be playin' and have such a big crowd that it would block the whole street. Then the police would come around, and then I'd go to another town and where I could play at. But most of the time, they would let you play. Then sometimes the man who owned a country store would give us something like a couple of dollars to play on a Saturday afternoon. We could hitchhike, transfer from truck to truck, or if we couldn't catch one of them, we'd go to the train yard, 'cause the railroad was all through that part of the country then...we might hop a freight, go to St. Louis or Chicago. Or we might hear about where a job was paying off - a highway crew, a railroad job, a levee camp there along the river, or some place in the country where a lot of people were workin' on a farm. You could go there and play and everybody would hand you some money. I didn't have a special place then. Anywhere was home. Where I do good, I stay. When it gets bad and dull, I'm gone. Folklorist Alan Lomax recorded Edwards in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1942 for the Library of Congress. Edwards recorded 15 album sides of music. The songs included "Wind Howlin' Blues" and "The Army Blues". He did not record again commercially until 1951, when he recorded "Who May Be Your Regular Be" for Arc under the name of Mr Honey. Edwards claims to have written several well-known blues songs including "Long Tall Woman Blues" and "Just Like Jesse James". His discography for the 1950s and 1960s amounts to nine songs from seven sessions. From 1974 to 1977, he recorded material for a full length LP, I've Been Around, released in 1978 on the independent Trix Records label by producer/ethnomusicologist Peter B. Lowry. Edwards performing in February 2008. His autobiography is entitled The World Don't Owe Me Nothing: The Life and Times of Delta Bluesman Honeyboy Edwards. The book was published in 1997 by Chicago Review Press. The work recounts his life from childhood, his journeys through the South and his arrival in Chicago in the early 1950s. A companion CD by the same title was released by Earwig Music shortly afterwards. His long association with Earwig Music and Michael Frank spawned many late career albums on a variety of independent labels from the 1980s on. He has also recorded at a church-turned-studio in Salina, Kansas and released albums on the APO record label. Edwards continued the rambling life he describes in his autobiography as he still toured the world well into his 90s. On July 17, 2011 his manager Michael Frank announced that Edwards would be retiring due to ongoing health issues. On August 29, 2011 Edwards died at his home, of congestive heart failure, at approx. 3 a.m. According to events listings on the Metromix Chicago website, Edwards had been scheduled to perform at noon that day, at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago's Millennium Park. Examiner critic Will Phoenix wrote, "the Critic's Choice here is 'Big Shot Roll'...an uptempo piece that not only pays apt tribute to the genres from which it sprung but also somehow musically personifies the band. Vigil and company blend blues, swing, and rock into their own fresh yet familiar signature sound...if they keep it up, they may soon find they will not only "survive" but succeed." ROUNDHOUSE BLUES (Hat and Case Music) has received very positive media response since its late-2010 release. "I plopped this CD into the player and hoped for the best, and low and behold I was pleasantly surprised just how good of an album "Roundhouse Blues" turned out to be," writes BLUES UNDERGROUND. "Talk about some classy blues...this is the stuff you look long and hard for. If you like virtuoso guitar this is one album you need to get!," opines CASHBOX magazine. "On "Roadhouse Blues," Vigil moves flawlessly and tastefully across the frets to produce a very high quality product for any discerning ear to enjoy," asserts BLUESROCKERS. The album was mastered by multi-Grammy-winning Charlie Watts (renowned for his work on Fleetwood Mac's Rumors among others) and engineered and produced by Glen Laughlin (Dickies, Cherry Bluestorms).

Watch a live performance of "So Much Inside Me" by Big Shot Reub and the Reloaders from The Whiskey A Go-Go in Hollywood last summer below:

Big Shot Reub & The Reloaders (Reuben Vigil, lead guitar-vocals); Jodie Hill (bass); Ric Lee (drums) played and performed in various San Diego bands before coming together to record ROUNDHOUSE BLUES, which in Vigil's words, "is a labor of friendship and getting my friends back to work. In this effort all processes have been near seamless. I am a lucky man."

The songs on ROUNDHOUSE BLUES reflect Vigil's diverse influences - B.B. King, Elvis Costello, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix among them. From opening track "So Much Inside Me" ("a jump-swing tribute to the greats, including Wynone Harris and Louis Jordan," explains Vigil) and melodic "Love's Come Knocking" ("a song designed to comfort a mending heart...speaking what you want and not what you have"); to the Latin-flavored "Viva Bracero" ("a tribute to the unskilled laborers that helped rebuild America after the Great Depression"); and uptempo, toe-tapping "Big Shot Roll" ("a salute to the West Coast swing dancers that are an integral part of the San Diego blues scene"), there is truly something for every Blues lover on ROUNDHOUSE BLUES.
