I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

You Got My Mind Messed Up - James Carr

James Carr (June 13, 1942 - January 7, 2001), was an American Rhythm & Blues and soul singer.
Born to a Baptist preacher's family in Coahoma, Mississippi, Carr began singing in church and was performing in gospel groups and making tables on an assembly line in Memphis, Tennessee, when he began recording in the mid-'60s for Goldwax Records, a small Memphis based label.
Carr first made the R&B charts in 1966 with "You've Got My Mind Messed Up", followed by his most famous song "The Dark End of the Street", written by Dan Penn and Chips Moman. Carr continued to record for Goldwax until the label closed in 1969 but failed to reach the same heights with his subsequent releases.
Carr suffered from bipolar disorder for most of his life which affected his career. This was evident during a tour of Japan in the 1970s when he froze in front of an audience following an overdose of antidepressants. However he completed the Japan tour with much success. A resurgence in interest in his music, spurred by his portrayal in Peter Guralnick's 1986 book Sweet Soul Music, helped return Carr to the recording studio but failed to deliver any further chart success.
James Carr died from lung cancer in a Memphis nursing home in 2001, aged 58.

Wang Dang Doodle - Soulmate

SOULMATE Inspired by the roots and groove sounds of the Blues,Blues-rock,Soul,Rock ‘n Roll, Funk and R&B,SOULMATE came together in Shillong,in February 2003 playing their first concert at the ‘Roots Festival at the Water Sports Complex in Umiam. Since then the band has performed many concerts all over The Northeast as well as in different parts of India. They have also performed at the International Jazzmandu Festival in Kathmandu for three years...2004, 2005 and 2009.
Anyone with an interest in the western music scene in India will recognize singer/songwriter Rudy Wallang, who leads this tight knit musical unit. Born into music, he grew up listening to his father Toto Wallang making music and he started singing and playing the ukulele at a very tender age eventually graduating to the guitar. Today, Rudy is one of the foremost singer / songwriter / blues guitar players in the country with a long musical history having been part of the well known blues rock acts, Great Society & Mojo
The beautiful and talented vocalist and rhythm guitarist of SOULMATE is Tipriti ‘Tips’ Kharbangar who has earned a name as one of the finest female singers to have emerged out of Shillong and India as a whole! If there is one thing Tip’s is happy doing it is singing and reflecting this, she vocalizes with a joy and exuberance that is unmatched and original. She started out singing gospel songs at the local church choir and is now drawn to the Blues, Soul, Jazz and listens to Aretha Franklin, Billy Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Nina Simone and B.B.King, Van Morrison, Jimmy Hall, Susan Tedeschi.
They have released 2 albums, the first being ‘SHILLONG’ and the 2nd Album,’ MOVING ON” was released by Blue Frog Records in June 2009. Soulmate have played numerous gigs all over India as well as in Kathmandu, France(Billy Bobs' in Disneyland Village), USA(23rd and 26th INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGES for 2007&2010 as well as in Colorado and Rhode Island) and in Singapore(MOSAIC MUSIC FESTIVAL). They are looking forward to touring Europe and Canada sometime in the middle of this year.

Electric Hot Tuna - Jorma's 70th Birthday Celebration - New DVD Release Review
The hot band on tour right now is Hot Tuna! Yep, Jorma and Jack are back on the road and to kick off their road trip Fur Peace Ranch has release live footage extracted from 2 nights of concerts at the Beacon Theater in NYC on December 3&4, 2010. I don't know how many of you have seen Jorma and Hot Tuna live but I have had the pleasure many times over a number of years. The recording begins with I See The Light featuring Jorma on his J190 and Jack joined by Barry Mitterhoff on an 8 string Danelectro guitar with lipstick pickups and Skoota Warner on drums. The band is joined on stage by John Hammond for a cool version of I Can Tell with Hammond on 335 and Jorma pushing his trademark solos through a goldtop. Then the tension starts to build with Warren Haynes on 335, Bill Kirchen on Tele, Larry Campbell on fiddle and Mitterhoff changes over to an electric mandolin. Kirchen has been separated from his old tele (probably retired) but the new one can talk just fine. If you've never seen Tuna with Mitterhoff, man can play the mandolin and doesn't restrict his playing to traditional mandolin formatting but uses it often as a mini guitar creating an interesting sound. In this case he's playing a 4 string which could be a tenor electric guitar. Very cool. Haynes rips off a pretty nice solo on the 335 and these guys seem to have been playing together forever. Jorma steps in with the Goldtop and his distinctive sound and with Campbell playing great violin riffs you could close your eyes and swear you were hearing Tuna in the 70's.

For Water Song the crew is joined by Byron House on upright electric bass played both plucked and bowed. Mitterhoff switched over to an acoustic f -style and Jorma pulls out a beautiful maple capped hollow body electric with a particularly light acoustical sound. On Bowlegged Woman/Knock Kneed Man Casady opens the song with a a nice solid bass riff. This track has a particularly nice funky swamp funk enforced by Oteil Burbridge on Fodera 6 string bass. Mittenhoff again playing an unconventional electro mando like instrument with 5 strings rippin some pretty cool solos. Burbridge gets the spotlight playing some interesting jazz chord and lead jazz bass lines. You can see Jorma just groovin to what's being layed down. Bob Wier joins mid song and dons a 335. The band continues the groove for quite some time building the tension but without anyone stepping on top of anyone else. Jorma pulls the reins back in with a crisp solo and a refrain of the chorus. Wier takes lead vocals on a cool version of Walking Blues. Both Wier and Jorma take turns on lead guitar and Mittenhoff as well on the 4 stringer. Steve Earle joins the band for Hometown Blues which the band plays in a rag style. Earle plays a black electrified acoustic Martin. Jorma keeps the band in the rag style groove with 99 Year Blues. I particularly like Jorma's vocals on this track. He's always strong but this track is right on. Mittenhoff is back on the F style and rips a few solos. Casady gets a chance to step up for some melodic bass lines which is always a pleasure. The band takes it to the funk a little and Burbridge and Casady trade lead lines.
The show is concluded with Jimmy Reed's Baby What You Want Me To Do. The entire force is onstage for a giant jam. This is a great conclusion for a great bunch of musicians. The attendee's certainly got their money's worth over this two night concert.Again Hot Tuna is on the road. Check the concert schedule below to see if they are coming to your town:

Blue Kitty Music artist: Liz Mandeville - Clarksdale - New Release review

I have been listening to the new recording, Clarksdale, by Liz Mandeville. Stylistically strong, blues singer Mandeville has assembled a star studded group of players here including Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Nick Moss to play a mixture of swing/boogie, ballads, roots and blues tracks. The recording starts off with Roadside Produce Stand, a swingin boogie with Big Eyes featured on harp. No Fear/Everything is an a capella spiritual style song showing the breadth of Mandeville's singing style. Donna Herula add some sensitive slide work to the ballad A Soldier's Wife. Leandro Lopez-Varady contributes some really interesting piano riffs to Clarksdale/Riverside Hotel Blues. The recording is wrapped up with the strongest composition, more of a country style foot stomper called My Mama Wears (Combat Boots) which should receive strong airplay. Mandeville is a sassy singer with strong conviction and will certainly attract a strong following of listeners looking for female vocal oriented blues styled music.

Get In The Kitchen And Burn - Harmonica George Robinson

George W. Robinson was born in Aberdeen, MS. on June 12, 1934. He learned how to play harmonica from his older brother Jesse, who was a local musician. Robinson moved to Chicago in 1952, and it was there that he sat-in with other musicians such as Elmore James & Howlin' Wolf until he formed his own group. In 1959 he cut two titles for Atomic-H with a band led by Eddy Clearwater but the label didn't release them. He worked as a cab driver and finally got to cut another single a decade later for Toddlin' Town that was released. He also cut a full-length LP for the Twinight label in July of that year, but no record seems to exist of it ever being issued. Nothing else seems to be known about him.
