New DVD! Electric Hot Tuna Jorma’s 70th Birthday Celebration

Just Released Electric Hot Tuna
Jorma’s 70th Birthday Celebration DVD

(Austin, Tex.) Jorma Kaukonen’s 70th Birthday Bash at the Beacon Theater in NYC on December 3 & 4, 2010 was a very special night, if not a historic one. There was electricity in the air and cause for celebration as Hot Tuna and special guests (We are talking about guitarists galore!) tore up the Beacon Theatre. Electric Hot Tuna and Friends lit up both nights with straight on rock and roll. It was a celebration of Jorma’s birthday for sure, and a celebration of a lifetime of friendships and musical camaraderie.

From the opening credits featuring the fans filling the theatre to the final encore; it was a night filled with thanks to Jorma, Jack and the Hot Tuna family for setting the soundtrack to our lives. A small crew with hand held cameras captured the night on video. Shot in standard definition, the video was strictly meant for personal archival footage. But the concert was so good and music so great that everyone decided it needed to be released.

The project was produced by the Fur Peace Ranch and the Kevin Morgan Studio, directed and edited by Andie Walla, and recorded and mixed by Jason Greenburg. (hottuna.com)

Raful Neal

Raful Neal & Blues Special Band. Raful Neal (vocal & harp), Julian Diana & Daniel Raffo (guitars), Fernando Tejero (keyboard), Mauro "Easy Baby" Diana (bass) Adrian Flores (drums)
Raful Neal (June 6, 1936 – September 1, 2004) was an American, Louisiana blues singer, harmonicist and songwriter.
Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and reared by his aunt and uncle on a tenant farm in Chamberlin, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, United States, Neal took up the blues harp at age 14, tutored by a local player named Ike Brown and influenced by Little Walter. Neal's first band, the Clouds, also included the guitarist, Buddy Guy. Neal debuted on vinyl in 1958 with a single for Don Robey's Houston, Texas based Peacock Records. But "Sunny Side of Love" was not successful.

Neal's debut album, Louisiana Legend, first emerged on King Snake Records and was picked up by Alligator Records in 1990. I Been Mistreated, Neal's follow-up, was released on Ichiban Records the following year. Neal toured around the world and in 1997 he contributed harp to a couple of tracks on Tab Benoit's Live: Swampland Jam record. Neal's next long-player, Old Friends, appeared in 1998. After a long bout with cancer, Neal died in Baton Rouge, in September 2004.

Nine of his ten children are also blues musicians, and several performed with him on his later releases on the Alligator label.

Summertime - Big Brother & The Holding Co.

Had it not been for the melodic and accomplished guitar work of Peter Albin flowing out of an upper story window at 1090 Page Street in the early summer of 1965, there might never have been a Big Brother and the Holding Company. It was on that day that Sam Andrew happened down Page Street in San Francisco and was so impressed by what me heard, that he went in and introduced himself.

Peter was born on June 6, 1944 in San Francisco. He began playing guitar at an early age and became involved in the folk scene of the early 60s. While attending The College of San Mateo, Peter and his brother Rodney played in a bluegrass band called the Liberty Hill Aristocrats.

By the time Peter met Sam in 1965, he had aspirations of forming a band that would write and perform children's songs. One of the first songs he wrote while working with children at The Marin Jewish Community Day Camp, north of San Francisco, was "Caterpillar". This song went on the appear on the first Big Brother and the Holding Company Album.

But the guitarist who inspired the first meeting with Sam Andrew ended up making the transition to bass and has spent the majority of his career with that instrument. Although his fine guitar work can be heard on cuts such as "Coo-Coo", "Oh, Sweet Mary", and "Turtle Blues" and also on Big Brother LPs "Be A Brother" and "How Hard It Is".

Witty and personable, Peter provided much of the on-stage commentary and also served as the liaison for the group with managers and promoters. Also, in the early days of Big Brother, before Janis, Peter did most of the lead vocals for the band. Among the many songs he sang were "Blow My Mind" and "Down On Me". Even after Janis, the first album finds Peter's lead on "Blindman", "Light Is Faster Than Sound", and "Caterpillar".

Peter's musical pursuits have also extended beyond Big Brother and the Holding Company. He has played with Country Joe and the Fish and can be heard on their 1969 Vanguard album "Here We Are Again". He later toured in an all-star band with Joe McDonald that cut an album outside Paris (Paris Sessions, Vanguard - 1973) in September of 1972.

In 1982, Peter was one of the founding members of the Bay Area super group, The Dinosaurs. Along with Peter, the group consisted of, John Cipollina, Barry Melton, Merl Saunders, Robert Hunter, and Spencer Dryden.

Peter has loaned many items to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland. The most notable piece is his legendary psychedelic Fender Jazz Bass from 1968 which is now a popular museum attraction.

Today, along with keeping a regular tour schedule with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Peter serves as an advertising coordinator with City Hall Record Distributors.

Spoonful - Lattie Murrell

From the Wolf's At The Door: Lost Recordings From The Spirits Of The South (2010)...Bengt Ollson, a young Swedish blues enthusiast, made the recordings found here during his extensive travels throughout the Deep South in the late '60s and early '70s. In 1969, at 19 years of age, Olsson headed to Memphis, where Memphis Jug Band veteran Dewey Corley introduced him to many of the city's overlooked older blues musicians. In Somerville, Tennessee, Ollson set up shop in a bootlegger's shack to record Lattie "The Wolf" Murrell, whose nickname stems from his great ability to mimic the vocal mannerisms of Howlin' Wolf.

Check out a recent feature in the Ventura County Star on Marsh HERE

<<>>

Tommy Marsh and BAD DOG have been together as a band for a little over a year and are already heavy hitters in the Ventura Music Scene. Blending and bending the Blues, Southern Rock and Jam band genres to a unique hybrid, the band has become extremely popular with fans of all three.

Presently they are preparing to record their first compilation of songs primarily written by their namesake. Tommy Marsh is lead singer, and one of two lead guitarists in the band. Before coming to Ventura 2 years ago, Marsh was the front man for the The Tule Devils in Central California. The Tule Devils were a very popular original Southern Jam band and performed a weekly show at The Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino for over a year and a half. Opening up for War before a crowd of over five-thousand cheering fans, The Tule Devils brought them to their feet with Tommy's originals "Father Time" and "After The Burn."

Marsh moved to Ventura for love, having met his soul mate (and Ventura County resident) Tammy at a show in Three Rivers, Ca. "It was a defining moment for me" says Tommy. "For me, love is the only road worth taking." His original song "Love Divine" clearly echoes this sentiment.

After arriving in Ventura Marsh started going to local Jam sessions to play and meet local musicians. He became a regular at The All-Star Blues Jam at The Bombay Club every Wednesday. Last year Tommy was asked to begin hosting this show every week and under his leadership it has become a goto destination in the Southern California Blues scene, attracting amazing players every week. Alastair Greene, John Marx, Guy Martin, Teresa Russell and many others are regular guests at this tremendous show.

When Marsh began to look for players to fill out his band BAD DOG he drew from great players he had met at the local Jam Sessions. Michael Katnik is an astonishing keyboardist and vocalist who was playing with the Great Ashford Gordon when they met. There was an immediate connection because Marshy loves Hammond Organ and was specifically looking for an organ player. Ashford had just recently moved to Arizona and Michael was looking for a new opportunity. Michael's scorching organ solos, lead and harmony vocals coupled with his amazing energy are a key part of BAD DOG's vibe.

Tommy met Stan Taylor at The All Star Blues Jam when he was playing with the house band. Stan is a Gibraltar-esque bassist. Taylor toured extensively with Led Zepagain, a premier Led Zeppelin tribute band, for several years. His abilities are astounding and his attitude is awesome - and he makes it easy to play with his solid as a rock groove and his great soloing.

John Lacques auditioned for Teri and The Tornados, a band Marsh plays with in Ventura. The Tornadoes chose a different player for their opening but Marsh saw something electric in John's playing, hiring him almost immediately. John is endorsed by Paiste Cymbals and is a crazy good player. He not only has an amazing sense of humor, but brings flair to both his conversation and to his performance.

Smokey Steve Hinojosa was the last member to join BAD DOG. Smokey is a regular at The All-Star Blues Jam and Marsh had played with him many times as host of the show. "There was always a magic when Steve and I jammed and each time we played together the bond between us grew." Not only is Hinojosa a great guitar player and singer; he is a marvelous human being and is someone I just needed to be around...So I asked him to join the band," asserts Marsh.

Tommy Marsh and BAD DOG are regulars in and around Ventura County and they are a band you can't see without saying something like DAMN or Holy Crap... Tommy's strong vocals and guitar playing along with BAD DOG's tight-as-a-drum skills make for a musical experience that is both rare and fills the senses.

Phantom Women - VOo Davis

Born in Anniston, AL in 1973 Brian "Voo" Davis' love for music began at an early age. While Davis' father loved the AM radio of the 70's, his mother stocked old 45s of Motown, Sun, and British sensations of the day. While struggling in the South, the family moved back to the Chicago area and began a modist life.

While Davis may have started listening at an early age, he didn't start playing guitar until age 19. By 21 Davis was booking his own gigs on the Blues circuit while cutting heads as a lead guitarist. In 1995 Davis formed the Band "Loose Change." It was a three piece known for their aggressive and dynamic stage shows. Davis earned the nickname Voo for his vast knowledge of Hendrix songs and the ability to play them on command. While on the circuit Davis has sat in with Chicago Blue Legend Eddie "the Chief" Clearwater, Chico Chism, New Orleans based Ironingboard Sam, Lamont Cranston, Chicago harp blazer Matthew Skoller, and many others.

Davis learned about the victories and difficulties of the road while working with W.C. Handy award winner Eddie King, KoKo's former Band Leader. King's amazing stage presence and head-cutting, finger-picking approach to the guitar was a great compliment to Davis' aggressive single note style. While touring the US with King, Davis sharpened his skills playing at some of the nation's best Blues Clubs and Festivals, including Chicago's Blues Fest. When it seemed Davis' young career was just taking off, he walked away to pursue other personal endeavors.

What brought Voo back to music? Personal tragedy struck in 2009 when Davis' wife passed away. This motivated the young slide player to pick it up again while filling a void left by his wife's early passing. It wasn't long before many of the 12 songs to "A Place for Secrets" were completed. Songs Davis held on to for 10 years were finally being completed and ready to play.

Teaming with Producer and multi-instrumentalist Steve Bores, the two constructed an album of numerous styles and personalities. While Bores also played drums on the album, both men worked the bass. Davis shows off his ability to handle several instruments on the album playing all guitar parts, organ, piano, harmonica, and all backing vocals. Like any reputable musician, Davis is able to tap into both personal tragedy and triumph to create music with incredible depth and meaning. His eclectic and dirty guitar stylings of standard and open tunings draw you in and keep you asking for more. His sound is unique, and his voice makes you a believer.

Stony Plain Records artist: Rory Block - I Belong To The Band - New Release Review

I have just received and had the opportunity to review the third in Rory Block's "Mentor" series of Blues Artists. This new CD, I Belong To The Band - A Tribute To Rev. Gary Davis follows earlier tributes to Son House and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Block developed a personal relationship with Davis in the mid sixties when she accompanied Stefan Grossman to Davis' home for lessons. Block has learned the masters lessons well and is certainly an accomplished guitarist. This CD covers 11 of Davis' best loved songs and includes two of of my personal favorites in Sampson and Delilah and Death Don't Have No Mercy. Block does a particularly nice job on Lord, I Feel Just Like Goin' On not only with her own vocal and guitar work but with particularly cool backing vocals. Another stand out track is Lo, I Be With You Always. If you love the traditional fingerpicking style of blues and want a new take on one of the true masters, this is an interesting more contemporary look at Rev. Gary Davis' work.

Nicole Pajer/HOLLYWOOD PATCH

"Scorch Sisters wowed the Real Blues Festival 2 audience....be ready for these Hollywood hipsters because they'll 'blue' you away. I really dig these gals and I think you will too."

Casey Reagan/AMERICAN BLUES NEWS

"The Scorch Sisters seize the blues as their own and subsequently fire it up with a unique intensity. They will demand your respect with their powerful vocals all the while having you wonder where the "Hell" have these ladies been hiding! The Scorch Sisters deliver the blues straight up: can someone say 'Cheers'?" Jim Lederle/AMERICAN VETERANS RADIO

Scorch Sisters are back, hotter and better than ever! Fresh off their recent accolades being recognized by longtime respected industry trade publication Music Connection as a "Top 100 Live Artist Of The Year For 2012." The Los Angeles-based group (Francesca Capasso, lead vocals; Alicia McCracken Morgan, keyboards-vocals; Kimberly Allison, lead guitar) were featured on the cover (above) and inside with a two-page spread of "The Blues Issue" in February by The Music Initiative magazine. Also catch a great feature on the trio in an L.A. Examiner article by Will Phoenix where he states, "these croonin' cuties just may be the hottest blues act in Los Angeles."

Excerpt from Will Phoenix's L.A. Examiner article: The ladies had all been working solo before they decided to form their blues band. Texas native Capasso moved to L.A. after high school having been interested in performing since childhood. She worked on the club scene and even sang background vocals for Motown Artist, Bobby Taylor at the CINE GRILL at The Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California. It would not be until 2011-after a long Tuesday night residency performing with the Cats-A-Renos at The Pig n Whistle in Hollywood, that she would join forces with her friends as The Scorch Sisters.

Native New Yorker Morgan first worked as a session singer when she moved to the west coast. Her raspy blues-based vocals scored her gigs doing various commercial jingles and numerous songwriter demos. She was nominated for a 2010 Grammy for her work in the film Love n' Dancing which was produced by Bruce Robb of the Robb Brothers' Cherokee Studios. She would work with the musical Robbs yet again when she joined The Scorch Sisters.

Allison, originally from Missouri, has played in various venues since she was 16. She relocated to California and graduated from The University of Southern California having earned a degree in studio/jazz guitar (cum laude). Allison also graduated with honors from Musicians Institute (GIT), of Hollywood, CA. She was nominated as "outstanding guitarist" by the L.A. Music Awards and in 2001 was a finalist for the Independent Music Awards competition before eventually signing on with The Scorch Sisters in 2011.

A new Scorch Sisters CD is in the works and will be released on Kimberly Allison's Starliner Music label in the near future.

Everyday People/ Dance To The Music - Sly and the Family Stone

Sly Stone (born Sylvester Stewart, March 15, 1943, Denton, Texas) is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer, most famous for his role as frontman for Sly and the Family Stone, a band which played a critical role in the development of soul, funk and psychedelia in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1993, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Stewart family was a deeply religious middle-class household from Denton, Texas. The parents, K.C. and Alpha Stewart, held the family together as Christians. As part of the doctrines of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), they encouraged musical expression in the household. Born 15 March 1943, Sylvester Stewart was the second of five children raised in Vallejo, in the northern San Francisco Bay Area. After the family moved from Denton, Texas to Vallejo, Sylvester and his brother Freddie and their sisters Rose and Vaetta formed "The Stewart Four" as children, performing gospel music in the Church of God in Christ and even recording a single local release 78 rpm single, "On the Battlefield" b/w "Walking in Jesus' Name", in 1952. The eldest sister, Loretta, was the only Stewart child not to pursue a musical career. All of the other Stewart children would later adopt the surname "Stone" and become members of Sly & the Family Stone.

Sylvester was identified as a musical prodigy from a young age. By the time he was seven Sylvester had already become proficient on the keyboards. By the age of eleven Sylvester had mastered the guitar, bass, and drums as well. While still in high school, Sylvester learned to play a number of instruments, settling primarily on the guitar, and joined a number of high school bands. One of these was The Viscaynes, a doo-wop group in which Sylvester and his Filipino friend, Frank Arelano, were the only non-white members. The fact that the group was integrated made the Viscaynes "hip" in the eyes of their audiences, and would later inspire Sylvester's idea of the multicultural "Family Stone". The Viscaynes released a few local singles, including "Yellow Moon" and "Stop What You Are"; during the same period, Sylvester also recorded a few solo singles under the name Danny Stewart. With his brother, Fred, he formed several short-lived groups, like the Stewart Bros.

The name Sly was a common nickname for Sylvester throughout his years in grade school. A classmate misspelled his name Slyvester and ever since the nickname followed him. In the mid-1960s, Stone worked as a disc jockey for San Francisco, California soul radio station KSOL, where he included white performers such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones into his playlists. During the same period, he worked as a staff record producer for Autumn Records, producing for San Francisco-area bands such as The Beau Brummels, The Mojo Men, Bobby Freeman, and Grace Slick's first band, the Great Society. Adopting the stage name "Sly Stone," he then formed "The Stoners" in 1966 which included Cynthia Robinson on trumpet. With her he started his next band, Sly and the Family Stone. Stone, Robinson, and Fred Stewart were joined by Larry Graham, Greg Errico, and Jerry Martini, all of whom had studied music and worked in numerous amateur groups. Working around the Bay Area in 1967, this multiracial band made a strong impression. On the first recordings Little Sister: Vet Stone, Mary McCreary, and Elva Mouton did backup vocals. In 1968 sister Rosie Stone (piano and vocals) joined the band.

Stone was influential in guiding KSOL-AM into soul music and started calling the station K-SOUL. The second was a popular soul music station (sans the K-SOUL moniker), at 107.7 FM (now known as KSAN). The current KSOL has a different format and is unrelated to the previous two stations.

Blues For The Red Boy - Todd Rhodes

Todd Rhodes (August 31, 1900 – June 4, 1965) was an American pianist and arranger and was an early influence in jazz and later on in R&B.

He was born Todd Washington Rhodes, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Rhodes attended both the Springfield School of Music and the Erie Conservatory, studying as pianist and songwriter.

In the early 1920s he played with Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Fats Waller, Rex Stewart, Doc Cheatham, and Don Redman in McKinney's Cotton Pickers, a jazz group. Rhodes lived and played in Detroit in the 1930s. In the late 1940s he started his own group, Todd Rhodes and His Toddlers, and started doing more R&B arrangements. With his Toddlers, he recorded "Your Daddy's Doggin' Around" and "Your Mouth Got a Hole In It." Rhodes also worked with Hank Ballard, The Chocolate Dandies and Wynonie Harris. He featured African American female lead singers, such as Connie Allen, who recorded "Rocket 69" in 1951. After she left the band in early 1952, her position was taken by LaVern Baker.

Rhodes died in June 1965 in Detroit, at the age of 64
