CHARLIE HUNTER SOLO 'PUBLIC DOMAIN'
Not since Solo Eight-String Guitar a decade ago has Charlie made a recording of just him and his guitar. This time, he's down to 7-strings and is performing songs that are all public domain. The songs were all hand-picked by Charlie's grandfather! "I was into doing a solo record for some time and just hit on the public domain idea. I figured I'd ask someone who actually remembered the tunes from his youth: My grandfather, Sidney Greenman. He was born in 1911 (yep, he's 99). He helped pick the tunes for me. I recorded this in a day at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn. Everything is live, there is no editing. Hope you like."
The album is aptly titled Public Domain. Pick up an exclusive CD copy only available here! It is also available for download at iTunes and all major digital distribution retailers. Also pick up both a t-shirt and 'Public Domain' CD for a discounted price in Charlie's Store.

Slow Blues Jam - Larry Carlton and Robben Ford

Robben Ford (born December 16, 1951) is an American blues, jazz and rock guitarist.
Ford was born in Woodlake, California, United States, but raised in Ukiah, California, and began playing the saxophone at age 10, picking up the guitar at age 13. Robben and his brothers Mark (harmonica) and Patrick Ford (drums) had a band they named the Charles Ford Blues Band in honor of their father.

Ford began playing professionally at age 18 when the Charles Ford Blues Band got a gig backing Charlie Musselwhite.[1] The band also recorded two albums The Charles Ford Band and Discovering the Blues. Next Ford put together a band with Bay Area musicians that became Jimmy Witherspoon's backup band. Ford recorded two albums with Witherspoon, Live and Spoonful'. The Ford Blues Band reunites periodically, and released live albums in the 1980s and 1990s.

Larry Carlton (born March 2, 1948, Torrance, California) is an American jazz, smooth jazz, jazz fusion, pop, and rock guitarist and singer. He has divided his recording time between solo recordings and session appearances with various well-known bands. Over his career, Carlton has won four Grammy Awards for his performances and compositions, including performing on the theme song for the hit television series, Hill Street Blues (1981).

Foldin' Bed - Whistler's Jug Band

One of the many African-American jug bands that flourished in the Louisville area in the '20s and '30s, Whistler's Jug Band, led by guitarist and novelty player Buford Threlkeld ("Whistler"), was distinctive on several counts. It was the first band of its type to record (starting in 1924), and it featured a ragtime and jazz repertoire that predated the later blues favored by groups like the Memphis Jug Band. Whistler's Jug Band became pioneers in preserving their music on film when they did a number for the Fox-Movietone newsreel in May 1930 ("Foldin' Bed"). Whistler's regular banjo player Willie Black is heard here, but other members are unknown.

Precious Bryant -   Don't Jump My Pony
Digging through the stacks: Precious Bryant

Precious Bryant and Tim DuffyWhen we first started working for Music Maker, Aaron would play the CD "My Name is Precious" by Precious Bryant non-stop. One of his favorite tracks is Don't Jump My Pony - he sings it all the time. The tune is indicative of the Chitlin' Circuit, a string of performance venues throughout the eastern and southern United States that were safe and acceptable for African-American performers during segregation. The song is originally written by famous Chitlin' Circuit performer Denise LaSalle.

Don't Jump My Pony was recorded at Precious' trailer in Waverly Hall, G.A., and her son Tony can be heard playing bass. That trailer has unfortunately become dilapidated and unsafe, and as we listen to her music in the office we are reminded of our efforts to obtain a second-hand trailer for Precious to continue living in comfort. Music Maker assists artists like Precious with emergency needs, so they can continue to focus on the creation of music like Don't Jump My Pony.

Enjoy!

BLIND PIG RECORDS ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY RELEASES

blindpigrecords.com
BLIND PIG RECORDS ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY RELEASES
Blind Pig Records has announced a February 7, 2012 release date for new CDs from Contino and Big James and the Chicago Playboys.
Contino    "Back Porch Dogma"
http://mailman.305spin.com/users/blindpigrecords/images/Continoemail.jpg
Contino is an eclectic roots music quintet of highly accomplished musicians  whose talent and synergy create an extraordinary sound. With their unique fusion of influences and instrumentation, they have crafted a lively and distinctive mixture of blues, Americana, rockabilly, and zydeco.  The group's unique blend of roots music styles has earned rave reviews and an ever-growing fan base in both North America and Europe.
Contino was formed in 2009 with a mission of writing songs that are "outside the box, yet authentic."  All the band members were involving in writing the nine original compositions on Back Porch Dogma, which also features a guest appearance on a Contino-penned track by noted vocalist Maria Muldaur.  The four covers include tunes from Tom Waits and the legendary songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller.

If the band name seems familiar, Pete Contino is the son of legendary accordionist and singer Dick Contino, a hugely successful performer who appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" a record 48 times, and the man who made "Lady of Spain" a No. 1 hit.
Big James and the Chicago Playboys   "The Big Payback"
http://mailman.305spin.com/users/blindpigrecords/images/BigJamesemail.jpg
Led by trombonist Big James Montgomery, the Chicago Playboys are a horn- driven, disciplined juggernaut of hard-hitting blues, R&B, sweet soul and serious funk that has drawn comparisons to James Brown's rhythm-intensive backing band.
The Big Payback was recorded live at the legendary Lionel Hampton Jazz Club in Paris in November, 2010.  James and the band perform with an infectious enthusiasm and verve, and the crowd responds in kind. In addition to three of James's blues-tinged original tunes, the program ranges from the killer James Brown groove of the title cut to the soul classic "Trying To Live My Life Without You," a couple of Magic Sam gems, George Clinton's "I'll Stay," to the funky, set closing instrumental version of Deep Purple's "Smoke On The Water."
Big James and the Chicago Playboys have won the Prix Blues award from the Académie du Jazz in Paris, and are five time winners of the Living Blues magazine annual Critics' Poll for "Most Outstanding Horns."  Their high-energy soul and funk, steeped in Chicago's signature blues tradition, and delivered with an abundance of heart, is a joyous celebration of the great tradition of horn-powered blues ensembles.

New Release - Can't Kick Love - Franco Paletta and the Stingers - review

I just received a copy of the new release from Franco Paletta and the Stingers called "Can't Kick Love". The band is made up of Franco Paletta on Vocal and Harp, Timmer Blakely on Bass, David Ward on Guitars, Jon Beyer on Drums, Steve Kevin on Piano and Organs, John Soller on Hammond B3. This is a tight little package of blues mostly in the upbeat style (call it what you will...not that good with definitions). All I know for sure is it's put together well, has great instrumentals and vocals. There are some real stand out harp, piano and guitar soloing on this recording disbursed throughout. I know it's the lazy mans way out but I'n not often a man of a lot of words... ok...let me rephrase that. I may go off for a while but music is subjective. Rather than tell you that I liked each song individually, I'll say I wasn't real keen on one song, Southbound but the rest of the recording was really good. The stand out track for me is "My Baby's Leavin" with use of great effects and abundant soloing.

Hope I convinced you to pick up a copy... you'll like it!

Blind John Davis

Blind John Davis (December 7, 1913 — October 12, 1985) was an African American, blues, jazz and boogie-woogie pianist and singer.= He is best remembered for his recordings including "A Little Every Day" and "Everybody's Boogie"
Davis was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, but he relocated with his family to Chicago at the age of two. Seven years later he had lost his sight. In his early years Davis backed Merline Johnson, and by his mid-twenties he was a well known and reliable accompanying pianist. Between 1937 and 1942, Davis recorded with Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Boy Williamson I, Tampa Red, Merline Johnson, and others, playing on many recordings of that time. He also waxed several efforts of his own, using his own lightweight voice.

After playing on various earlier recording sessions with him, in the 1940s Davis teamed up with Lonnie Johnson. Recording later on his own, "No Mail Today" (1949) became a minor hit for Davis. Most of Doctor Clayton's later recordings featured Davis on piano.

He toured Europe with Broonzy in 1952, the first blues pianist to do so. In later years Davis toured and recorded frequently in Europe, where he enjoyed a higher profile than in his homeland.

Davis died in his adopted home town of Chicago, at the age of 71, in October 1985.

JASON YUDOFF - TRAGIC HERO - Mike Packer correspondent

Jason Yudoff is a true and talented musician from New York City whose lyrics expose a man whose art is born from an analytical mind and the heart of an eternal romantic. His bluesy rock melodies about love, life and loss, swarm alongside powerful keyboard riffs and Jason's growl adds a lethal injection of blue-eyed soul, that in it's hottest moments, leap right out of the speakers and demands nothing short of the listeners undying attention.

Jason toured internationally playing keyboards and percussion in the original cast of "Top Dogs" (from the producers of "Stomp") including two appearances on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno":.Jason is also known as the anti-cocktail pianist eschewing standard songs and adding funky, improvisational themes to the music for clubs and corporate functions like the U.S Open and The Tribeca Film Festival. He also fronts his own band Jason Yudoff and The New Hotness":

Jason's voice is already a well recognized instrument. He has recorded well over 1500 commercials for Pepsi, MacDonalds, AT&T, Toyota, ESPN and animated shows like MTV's ":Celebrity Deathmatch" voicing Johnny Knoxville and Saturday Night Live's "TV Funhouse" voicing a Backsreet Boy.

Come Dancing In Lansing! Head Honchos' Debut Their Funky Blues'n'Rock At J.J. Kelley's In Lansing - Friday, December 16

Head Honchos' Newest Photo
"WHO ARE THESE GUYS? Original and soul-pounding Blues at its best. I have seldom heard a Blues-Rock band with so much power! This is hard rockin' blues at its best...I've been waiting for this...it's like getting kicked in the gut and saying thanks...really powerful backup and spin-tingling, terrifying, aggressive guitar playing is the new deal here. I am not going to compare this CD with anybody's CD. You just have to hear it.This is ground-breaking Blues."                                                                 BLUES SOURCE

"Wow! From the opening track, "Goin' Down," this disc had our attention! From there however, things only got better, the next song, "Lucky's Train," had us grooving and enjoying the juicy guitar riffs and righteous vocals - and surprise - it's an original. There are no disappointments on this CD. Every track sparkles with electricity, great guitar, stellar engineering and production, and wonderful vocals. In short, it's a homerun...out of the park!"                                                                                                                                            BARRELHOUSE BLUES

Head Honchos' Debut Their Funky Blues'n'Rock At J.J. Kelley's In Lansing
                       Friday, December 16

(LANSING, IL) - Rising blues-rock ensemble Head Honchos' make their performing debut at J.J. Kelley's, 2455 Bernice Rd., Lansing, Friday, December 16. 9:30 p.m. $5. Info: (708) 474-9977 or www.jjkelleyslansing.com.
The Illinois-based Head Honchos' play smokin' Chicago blues imbued with elements of rock. The band is also a father/son affair - formed by guitarist Rocco Calipari Sr. (who is also a member of noted longtime Chicago band, Howard and the White Boys) and his son, Rocco Calipari Jr.
In just under two years together as a working band, Head Honchos' have garnered positive reviews for their self-titled debut release in publications both far (Blues Matters and Metalliville in the U.K.) and near (Blues Source; Vintage Guitar; Chicago Examiner; Bluesrockers; Barrelhouse Blues; Southland Blues; American Blues Blog; more).  The band are about to record the follow-up to their debut, tentatively titled "Come Strong."
Watch a performance by Head Honchos' play Cheap Sun Glasses here:

In a time when American music is too often characterized by emasculated melodies, narcissistic lyrics, and hyped mediocrity - Head Honchos' offer up intense body-moving rhythms and emotionally-charged guitar expressions on their recently-released seven-song self-titled CD.  Grounded on the foundations of American blues, rock, soul, and funk, Head Honchos' launch their improvisational excursions with an irresistable invitation to kick back, let go, and enthusiastically ENJOY!
Head Honchos' CD contains  some quickly-memorable originals ("Lucky's Train," "Whiskey Devil," "Good Love," "That Driving Beat") as well as sizzling interpretations of classics such as Albert King's "Going Down," "Fire On The Bayou" by Aaron Neville,  and Wilson Pickett's "99 1/2 Won't Do."
Front person Rocco Calipari's Detroit-schooled vocals will leave no doubt of the unapologetic American identity we all experience. In an artistic celebration of our shared pride and joy, Head Honchos' cover some of our most loved standards, while introducing to an appreciative audience "roots-inspired" new tunes. Calipari is a skilled teacher of guitar and since 1995 has been playing lead guitar for well-known Chicago band,  Howard and The White Boys" Rocco recorded with Buddy Guy on H&TWB's CD, The Big Score. Additionally, he has performed with Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Carl Weathersby, Son Seals, and many more. As one of Chicago's great contemporary blues guitarists, Rocco has played in 40 states and 12 countries around the world.
Rocco Calipari Jr. first sat in with Howard and the White Boys when he was 15 years old. He attended the Guitar Institute in Hollywood, Calif. where he studied under Carl Verheyen (Supertramp), jazz/blues great Scott Henderson, and famed blues instructor/writer Keith Wyatt. His approach to the guitar, while grounded in rock and blues, is keenly aimed at a post-modern interpretation of American roots music.

Return of the Funky Worm - Johnny Moeller and Paul Size

What does Anson Funderburgh have to do with Beavis and Butt-Head

Maybe more than you think. We all know Anson is a gentleman's gentleman but there is a link in there! Many of you probably know the name, Mike Judge, but don't know why. I'll tell you, it's because he is a blues bass player having played with Anson Funderburgh on Rack 'Em Up, and with Doyle Bramhall (The Senior) on numerous recordings over a period of about a decade. But here's another link. I have read that Judge based Beavis's character (appearance) on Anson.

In 1991, Judge's short film "Office Space" (also known as the Milton series of shorts) was acquired by Comedy Central, following a Dallas animation festival.
In 1992, he developed Frog Baseball, a short film featuring the characters Beavis and Butt-head, to be featured on Liquid Television, a 1990s animation showcase that appeared on MTV. The short led to the creation of the Beavis and Butt-head series on MTV, in which Judge voiced both title characters as well as the majority of supporting characters. Beavis and Butt-head visited Wilson Middle School and attended Highland High School in their series, which are the names of schools in Albuquerque, Judge's hometown. In 1997, Judge created King of the Hill for the Fox Network. Many of the show's characters were based on people he had known while living in Texas. Judge voiced characters Hank Hill and Jeff Boomhauer. At heart, however, Judge is a Willie Dixon-loving bass player who's recorded and performed with Bramhall for well over a decade.
In case you aren't familiar with Beavis and Butt-Head, the show centers on two socially awkward, rock/metal-loving teenage delinquents, Beavis and Butt-head (both voiced by Judge), who live in the town of Highland, Texas. They have no apparent adult supervision at home, are woefully undereducated and dim-witted and barely literate, and lack any empathy or moral scruples. One of the most well-known aspects of the series was the inclusion of music videos, which occurred between animated segments. The duo would watch and make humorous observations (about the band, a song's lyrics, and/or a video's visuals), or simply engage in nonsensical dialogs. Mike Judge improvised the video comments, and they were never scripted.
They showed a particular disdain for many generic 1980s "hair bands". They had almost no tolerance for new wave or electronic music (e.g. Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Two Tribes", Gary Numan's "Cars", and Scatman John's "Scatman" were all instantly shown contempt by the duo). Korn's song "Blind", as an example of Nu metal, was criticized for lacking originality (although they did claim they sounded "kinda cool"). Bands who received considerably large amounts of criticism during the tenure of the show included Poison and Grim Reaper.
When confronted with Milli Vanilli's "Baby Don't Forget My Number" and Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby", the pair looked at one another in horror and changed the channel without speaking a word; this was effectively among the harshest commentary they ever gave a music video. They also non-verbally showed disgust when confronted with a duet between David Bowie and Bing Crosby for The Little Drummer Boy, shielding their eyes before changing the channel. The Europeans' video for "The Animal Song" was the most critically trashed by the duo, as Butt-Head claimed, "This sucks more than anything I have ever seen."

Ok , so the story ends there...right? No. Beavis and Butt-head are supposedly based on the childhood friends and professional musicians and guitar aces Johnny Moeller and Paul Size.
Johnny Moeller (born Jon Kelly Moeller, 31 October 1970, Fort Worth, Texas) is an American blues guitarist currently with The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Paul Size has carved a niche for himself as the guitarist for the blues-soul-party combo Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish.
I bring you Beavis and Butt-Head!
