Settin the Clock - The Veldman Brothers

"The Veldman Brothers": A solid band moulded around "bloodbrothers" Gerrit and Bennie Veldman: Gerrit on guitar, Bennie on Hammond and bluesharp together with Marco Overkamp on drums and Donald van der Goes on bass. Infinite energy, visible joy, tangible synergy; music played from the guts: a mean and tight rhythm-section that forces Gerrit and Bennie Veldman into fabulous measures as singers, soloists and entertainers. Four talented musicians with massive experience, influenced by each other and by original heroes like the Vaughan Brothers, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Smith and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. "The Veldman Brothers" follow these tracks respectfully: with covers, with their own songs and above all with a highly recognizable "Veldman Brothers-sound". You I'l find "The Veldman Brothers" playing festivals as well as small blues joints and already they have managed to abash the audiences at every major bluesclub and festival in Holland. Their first record "Home" was rewarded "Best Blues album of 2007" by dedicated internet-sites and radio-stations. Blues, rhythm and blues, swing-blues and delta-blues, blues with a touch off rock and blues with a twist off soul or funk. "The Veldman Brothers" won't recognize any limits and obey to only one golden rule: "It has to be pure and straight from the heart". "Blues and roots straight from the heart". Make sure that you've seen, heard and felt "The Veldman Brothers".

I'll Never Get Out of These Blues Alive - John Lee Hooker

In my mind one of the big five bluesmen of all times!
John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917 – June 21, 2001) was an American blues singer-songwriter and guitarist.

Hooker began his life as the son of a sharecropper, William Hooker, and rose to prominence performing his own unique style of what was originally closest to Delta blues. He developed a 'talking blues' style that was his trademark. Though similar to the early Delta blues, his music was metrically free. John Lee Hooker could be said to embody his own unique genre of the blues, often incorporating the boogie-woogie piano style and a driving rhythm into his masterful and idiosyncratic blues guitar and singing. His best known songs include "Boogie Chillen'" (1948), "I'm in the Mood" (1951) and "Boom Boom" (1962), the first two reaching R&B #1 in the Billboard charts.

Sugar - Richard Carr

Historically, the blues has been a vocal musical form. Field hollers soared across the cotton and tobacco fields of the southern United States long before the first guitar god plugged in his amp. The first blues records focused on singers. Mamie Smith, Bessie Smith, and Ethel Waters made their mark with their voices. Even instrumental virtuoso Blind Lemon Jefferson sold records, on the strength of his voice and the content of his lyrics. Richard Carr continues the tradition of the blues singer. Carr grew up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, not generally regarded as a hot bed of the blues. During summers on the Alabama Gulf Coast he spent many Sundays listening to the all- day gospel music radio broadcasts. Richard Carr didn't plan on becoming a blues singer. His earliest influence was classical Latin choral music at the local convent school. Although his first love was the drum, Richard's godfather decided the guitar made less noise and Richard soon began taking lessons at a nearby Baptist Church. There he was exposed to the depth and beauty of gospel music, much as generations of southern blues and soul singers have been. Gospel was soon followed by exposure to jazz and swing. Richard's original ambition was to be a crooner like Dean Martin or Tony Bennett. This influence is apparent as Carr's debut album focuses on his clear, clean vocals and story- telling skills as a songwriter. Despite these early influences Carr isn't new to the blues. After playing with a number of groups during his teens, Richard was absent from the music business for several years. In the mid nineties he resumed his professional musical career while living in Boston, Massachusetts. Since 1996 he has been a working musician in Quebec's surprisingly busy blues scene. Over the past few years gigs have been become more steadily frequent and at increasingly larger venues including some of Canada's most prestigious blues clubs and festivals. Carr's original songs feel old, in a good way. They evoke images of Fred Astaire or Cab Calloway out on the town for a night of big cars, bright lights, flashy suits and glamour. From the instrumental guitar bounce of "Top Swing" to the title cut "Tell Everybody" Richard Carr's songs follow the best of blues traditions. The songs have purpose and meaning. Best of all, his songs tell stories

Blind Raccoon release: Hearts Are Wild - Debbie Bond - New Release review

I just received the new recording by Debbie Bond called "Hearts Are Wild". Debbie shows her strong influences in soul and blues with tributes to some of the great female singers like Janis and Aretha (Baby I love you)with 10 original and 2 cover tunes. Debbie's band is made up of her partner Rick Asherson (keyboard, harp and background vocals), James Mr. B. Brown (bass, guitar, background), Dave Crenshaw (drums and percussion), Brad Guin(tenor sax), Chad Fisher (trombone), Rob Alley (trumpet) and Brice Miller (trumpet). This is a solid blues rock, vocals driven recording. Stand out track is "Hearts Are Wild".

As The Years Go Passing By - Jimmy Johnson

Several of Johnson's brothers had careers in music; among them are soul musician Syl Johnson and Magic Sam bassist Mack Thompson. In his younger years he played piano and sang in gospel groups. He and his family moved to Chicago in 1950, where he worked as a welder and played guitar in his spare time. He began playing professionally with Slim Willis in 1959, changing his last name to Johnson like his brother Syl. As a guitarist he was influenced by both Buddy Guy and Otis Rush and he played with Freddy King, Albert King, Magic Sam and Eddy Clearwater among others.
Jimmy Johnson (born James Earl Thompson, November 25, 1928, Holly Springs, Mississippi, United States) is an American blues guitarist and singer.
In the 1960s he played more R&B music, working with Otis Clay, Denise LaSalle, and Garland Green. He also had his own group from the early 1960s, and by the late 1960s he had released his first single. By 1974 he had returned to blues playing, working with Jimmy Dawkins and touring Japan with Otis Rush in 1975.

His first solo material appeared on Alligator Records and Delmark Records in 1978-79, when he was fifty years old. He was an award-winner at the first Blues Music Awards held in Memphis in November 1980. His career continued to pick up until December 2, 1988, when his touring van crashed in Indiana, killing his keyboardist St. James Bryant and bassist Larry Exum. Johnson was injured and took an extended hiatus from the music industry, but returned to record for Verve Records in 1994. In 2002, he recorded with his brother, Syl. He remained active and among other things toured Europe in 2009, playing both the UK as well as Copenhagen Blues Festival in Denmark.

Five Long Years - Eddie Boyd

Edward Riley Boyd was born on Frank Moore's Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, on November 25, 1914, although a birth certificate later put the date at November 13. As a youth, he taught himself how to play piano and guitar, and he worked the juke joints in and around the Mississippi delta and then moved to Memphis in 1936. In Memphis he often played on Beale Street with his band the Dixie Rhythm Boys. Hoping to record, Boyd left Memphis for Chicago in 1941. There he worked in the city's blues joints with Johnny Shines, " Sonny Boy Williamson, and the famous Muddy Waters. Boyd played in the recording studio regularly.

She learned to play the guitar from the real master Robert Allen, and learned vocal from master Nate Griffin. The Yardbirds Story Pt 1:Meet The Most Blueswailing Band

The Yardbirds, one of the early British purveyors of American blues music done in a contemporary fashion has a distinction of being the band that fostered the careers of three of the modern blues greatest guitar players, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Eric Clapton working numerous bands including John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream with jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, Blindfaith with the addition of Steve Winwood and Ric Gretch replacing Bruce, Delaney and Bonnie, Derek and the Dominos, a band formed without the fame of the Clapton name and with featured guest Duane Allman and of course his own self named band. Jeff Beck had the Jeff Beck Group with undiscovered Rod Stewart (who was to headline the original Woodstock Festival (until Jeff decided it wasn't worth the trip), a second formation of the band with Max Middleton and Bobby Tench, Beck, Bogart and Appice formed with the rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge and then various band members formed under his own name. Jimmy Page of course took what was left of the Yardbirds and the tunes they had been working on and formed super group Led Zep.

This is a nice little documentary showing the Yardbirds history.

CD review:Dirty Little Young'uns - The 24th Street Wailers

I just received "Dirty Little Young'uns", the most recent release from the 24th Street Wailers. The Wailers are a formally trained band of four aiming to show the world what they got and what they have is the capability to put out a recording that has universal appeal. This self penned 13 track release shows each members command of their craft featuring Mike Archer on Bass, Lindsay Beaver on Drums and vocals, Emily Burgess on guitar and Jonathan Wong on sax. Stand out tracks "Who Do You Think You Are" demonstrates Burgess' prowess on guitar and "Before You Were Gone" their songwriting chops as well as a tasty sax solo by Wong.

People Get Ready - Curtis Mayfield

What an incredible incredible talent... sad to be gone! Check out this line up of stars in the band Taylor Dane, Hiram Bullock, David Lindley, David Sanborn, Omar Hakkim, Don Alias and Tom Barney.
Curtis Lee Mayfield (June 3, 1942 – December 26, 1999) was an American soul, R&B, and funk singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his anthemic music with The Impressions during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's and for composing the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Super Fly, Mayfield is highly regarded as a pioneer of funk and of politically conscious African-American music.[1][2] He was also a multi-instrumentalist who played the guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, and drums. Curtis Mayfield is a winner of both the Grammy Legend Award (in 1994) and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (in 1995), and was a double inductee into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted as a member of The Impressions into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and again in 1999 as a solo artist. He is also a two-time Grammy Hall of Fame inductee.
Mayfield was active throughout the 1970s and 1980s, though he had a somewhat lower public profile in the 1980s. On August 13, 1990, Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down after stage lighting equipment fell on him at an outdoor concert at Wingate Field in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York. The accident set him back, but Mayfield forged ahead. He was unable to play guitar, but he wrote, sang, and directed the recording of his last album, New World Order. Mayfield's vocals were painstakingly recorded, usually line-by-line while lying on his back.

Mayfield received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. In February, 1998, he had to have his right leg amputated due to diabetes. Mayfield was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, 1999. Health reasons prevented him from attending the ceremony, which included fellow inductees Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Dusty Springfield, George Martin, and 1970s Curtom signee and labelmate The Staple Singers.

His last appearance on record was with the group Bran Van 3000 on the song "Astounded" for their album Discosis, recorded just before his death and released in 2001.
Curtis Mayfield died on December 26, 1999 at the North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell, Georgia due to his steadily declining health subsequent to his paralysis.

The Hucklebuck - The Rhythm Chiefs

The Rhythm Chiefs are often referred to as the youngest blues band in The Netherlands, but they have passed that stage by now, both musically and age-wise. Founded in 2003 and now with an average age of only 17, there is no doubt though that The Rhythm Chiefs are very skillful players, leaving many musicians twice their age green with envy. They may well be the most talented young roots act in the Benelux countries or even further.
Dusty Ciggaar - Guitar, Vocals .... Danny van 't Hoff - Bass guitar, Vocals .... Rafael Schwiddessen - Drums, Vocals

Musically it's not strictly the blues anymore either as they tend to blend in some country, bluegrass, rock 'n roll, rockabilly, as well as hints of jazz and funk.

Cold Blooded Murderer - Sam Chatmon

Chatmon was born in Bolton, Mississippi on January 10, 1897. Chatmon's family was well known in Mississippi for their musical talents; Chatmon was a member of the family's string band when he was young. He performed on a regular basis for white audiences in the 1900s.

The Chatmon band played rags, ballads, and popular dance tunes. Two of Sam's brothers, fiddler Lonnie Chatmon and guitarist Bo Carter, performed with guitarist Walter Vinson as the Mississippi Sheiks.

Chatmon played the banjo, mandolin, and harmonica in addition to the guitar. He performed at parties and on street corners throughout Mississippi for small pay and tips. In the 1930s he recorded both with the Sheiks, as well as with sibling Lonnie as the Chatman Brothers.

Chatmon moved to Hollandale, Mississippi in the early 1940s and worked on plantations in Hollandale. He was re-discovered in 1960 and started a new chapter of his career as folk-blues artist. In the same year Chatmon recorded for the Arhoolie record label. He toured extensively during the 1960s and 1970s. He played many of the largest and best-known folk festivals, including the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C. in 1972, the Mariposa Fest in Toronto in 1974, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 1976.

A headstone memorial to Chatmon with the inscription "Sitting on top of the World" was paid for by Bonnie Raitt through the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund and placed in Sanders Memorial Cemetery, Hollandale, Mississippi on March 14, 1998 at a large ceremomy held at the Hollandale Municipal Building, celebrated by the Mayor and members of the City Council of Hollandale as well as over 100 attendees.

Midnight Creeper - Nico Wayne TOUSSAINT
