Chicken Shack - Mojo Buford

Here's the outstanding harmonica virtuoso Mojo Buford preforming at an MD fundraiser inside the walls of Stillwater prison in Minnesota. Another clip from the "eXXtra Presents" TV series produced by Larry Hutchinson "Hutch" & Mark Neuman-Scott.
George "Mojo" Buford (November 10, 1929 – October 11, 2011) was an American blues harmonica player, best known for his work in Muddy Waters' band.
Buford relocated from Hernando, Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee in his youth, where he studied the blues. He relocated to Chicago in 1952, forming the Savage Boys that eventually became known as the Muddy Waters, Jr. Band. They substituted for Muddy Waters at local nightclubs whilst he was touring.

Buford first played in Muddy Waters' backing band in 1959, replacing Little Walter, but in 1962 moved to Minneapolis to front his own band, and record albums. It was in Minneapolis that Buford gained his nickname "Mojo", because of the audiences requesting him to perform his cover version of "Got My Mojo Working." Buford returned to Muddy Waters' combo in 1967 for a year when he replaced James Cotton. He had a longer tenure with Muddy Waters in the early 1970s, and returned for the final time after Jerry Portnoy departed to form The Legendary Blues Band.

He also recorded for the Mr. Blues label (later re-issued on Rooster Blues) and the British JSP label.

Buford died on October 11, 2011, in Minneapolis, after a long hospitalization.
He was 81.

HONEYBOY EDWARDS TRIBUTE OCTOBER 19TH @ BUDDY GUY'S LEGENDS - Michael Packer

The Michael Packer Blues Band rolled into Chicago from New York City on Wednesday morning October 19th tired, ragged but ready to donate their time for a celebration of David Honeyboy Edwards life in a evening performance of blues. Buddy Guy's Legends club opened about 11 am and to my surprise and delight when I introduced myself and told the manager that we had just drove from New York. He said ":Welcome!" and with open arms proceeded to show us 2 green rooms upstairs where we could relax and take it easy so we would be ready for the nights event. They basically gave us the run of the joint. My hat goes off to the management and staff @ Buddy Guys. They made us feel at home and we were. Home of the blues in Chicago.

The night started with a VIP party and acoustic acts with everyone telling their Honeyboy Edwards stories. To me the highlite was listening to Liz Mandeville who has recorded several CDs for Earwig Music which is owned by Honeyboy's manager and side-kick for 40 years Michael Frank. I had the honor of presenting Michael Frank with a Blues Hall Of Fame Award as well as a Blues Hall Of Fame Legendary Blues Artist Award for Honeyboy which was given to his family.

My band shortly took the stage and brought our New York blues to Chicago and got the party started. By the looks of the faces of the crowd we brought some joy and that is what Honeyboy was all about so we did our job. It then proceeded into a jam with guest artists most notably Earwig Artist Tim Woods and Blue Skunk artist harmonica ace Deak Harp. Grammy nominees Ronnie and Wayne Brooks and their band took the stage with the marvelous Chicago harp player Billy Branch. The night concluded with the real deal Chicago Bluesman Johnny Drummer.

The event was a huge success raising money for The Honeyboy Edwards Fund @ The National Blues Museum. The Michael Packer Blues Band made our way into the night soon after Johnny Drummer sang "Sweet Home Chicago". We had a gig in New Jersey the next day. The Chicago blues and Honeboy Edwards were still in are heads but most of all in our hearts when we headed east on route 80 as we took the blues highway home.

Key To the Highway - Boo Hanks & Big Ron Hunter

I just posted Boo Hanks a few days ago. This is a highlight of Big Ron Hunter. Ron owns a voice that gives people chills. It’s the kind of voice that carries warmth and tenderness, a voice that is unmistakably his own and embodies everything that’s raw, pure and beautiful about the blues.

Born: September 3, 1953 in Winston-Salem, NC
Repertoire Summary: Acoustic Blues, guitar
Current Location: Winston-Salem, NC

More about Ron:
Ron Hunter was born in Winston-Salem, NC. His father, who was a sharecropper, taught Ron how to sing and play the guitar at a young age. Mentored by the legendary Guitar Gabriel and versed in R&B, Rock & the Blues of BB King, Ron plays both electric and acoustic guitars in dramatically different styles. From Gabe’s advice, Hunter developed his unique sound all while raising a family and working a day job. As a maintenance man, you could find Ron locked up in his closet-sized office, plucking away at his guitar and pouring out the blues.

Hunter just released his second album, the Great Unknown, which, aside from receiving praise in the Living Blues magazine, proves his mastery of the blues and folk niches.

Five Long Years - Slam Allen

For over 20 years, Slam Allen has been entertaining audiences with his unique blend of soul and blues. Playing the famous Chitlin' Circuit as well as performing around the world, Allen's music and enthusiasm has been shared with thousands of people.

For the past eight years he has played an important role, as the lead singer and guitarist, in the legendary James Cotton Band. "It's one of the highlights and privileges of my life to play with Cotton" says Allen, "He is one of the last living legends, and there's so much history there.

Cotton was directly connected to Muddy Waters -- who was a major factor in the blues world as well as being one of my all time favorites. Playing with Cotton is such a great experience for me and there are things you can learn from him that you can't learn from any school. It's a great honor."

Music is in Allen's blood -- he got his start from his father and uncles who were known as the Allen Brothers Band. Allen carries on the family legacy wherever he goes. His music runs deep. "When I play," says Allen, "People who may have never heard of me leave the show with a feeling that we're old friends or family."

From B.B. King to Otis Redding, Slam has a way of making you feel the Soul of the Music. It's often difficult to tell if he's doing one of his originals or an old blues or soul cover. Regardless, he makes all the music his own.

New Release : If I Don't Got You - Matthew Curry and the Fury - Review

Last week I interviewed Matthew Curry of Matthew Cury and the Fury. Matthew is a very talented performer with a sound well beyond his 16 years. I don't want to overplay Matthews age because I believe that his talent is strong for a performer at any age. I am very impressed with this cd actually feeling that it may be one of the best new recordings that I have listened to in the past year. Matthew has strong writing capabilities (writing 7 of the 9 tracks on this new release), a unique singing voice, and great guitar tone on top of excellent playing skills. Often there are a few strong tracks and a few fillers on even the best artists recordings. I truely feel that this is a great cd and am recommending it to all of my friends! I don't know if you get the idea that I really like this cd but if I haven't given you that impression... I REALLY LIKE THIS CD!!.

The rest is up to you. If you don't listen to my advice and buy this now, don't wonder why you can't get seats to see him 2 years from now!

You can get Matthews new cd here:

Why Should I Worry - Algia Mae Hinton

“Algia Mae is a great example of what is called in and throughout the African diaspora, ‘Original Joe.’ This is an innovative character who survives and creates anew under all circumstances. Algia Mae Hinton is someone not to be missed!” -Taj Mahal

Born: August 29, 1929 in Johnston County, NC
Repertoire Summary: Acoustic Blues

Algia Mae Hinton was born on August 29, 1929 in Johnston County, North Carolina. Her parents, Alexander and Ollie O’Neal, were farmers who raised tobacco, cotton, cucumbers and sweet potatoes. Mother Ollie could play many stringed instruments and began teaching Algia when she was just nine years old. She was the youngest of fourteen children and worked the fields from an early age. Her musical and agricultural upbringing set the stage for her adult life. Algia married Millard Hinton in 1950. Her husband died in 1965, forcing Algia to raise her seven children alone by working long hours on the farm. Despite these trying circumstances, Algia kept the music alive and passed it on to her children. Together, they fought off the hard times by entertaining the people of their community. Over the years Algia’s music has gained international recognition. -Lightnin’ Wells If you kill a chicken save me the head. When you thinking I’m working, I’m walking down the street.

When the Time Comes - Jon Amor Blues Group

In the early nineties, from a tiny village in deepest darkest Wiltshire, there came a band with fire in its belly and blues in its heart, and that band was called The Hoax. One of the four was Jon Amor, a long, lean guitar player who, along with his cohorts toured the UK Europe and the USA for eight years, with four successful albums and a string of awards to their name. As frontman with his own band AMOR, Jon established himself as a talented singer and songwriter in his own right, releasing two influential albums that gave British blues rock a much-needed shot in the arm. Jon disbanded AMOR in 2005 to concentrate on solo performances of songs from his album “Unknown Soldier”, produced by Stephen Evans (Robert Plant, Goldfrapp, Thea Gilmore). This highly acclaimed album bears Amor’s hallmark freshness and originality, endorsed by a outstanding guest appearance from legendary Robert Plant on ‘Ball & Chain’, and featuring drummer Clive Deamer of Portishead and Roni Size fame. “Unknown Soldier is a truly great album.” Mark Lamarr, BBC Radio 2 “if you liked the sheer dynamic exuberance of the Amor band albums, light and acoustic one moment then grinding electricity the next, you can pick this up with this writer’s hearty recommendation.” Blues Matters! Magazine Jon now proudly presents his latest studio album, “Stories From The Crooked Room” featuring a collection of finely crafted songs recorded with his live band. “Stories From The Crooked Room is effortlessly contemporary and sparking with electricity when it counts.” www.fairhearing.com “Mature songwriting, fine voice and customary great playing.... another winner from one of the good guys out there!” Chester Chronicle

Talk To Your Daughter - The Hot Rod Band w/ Mikhail Sokolov

Jam Session in Rithm'n'Blues Club in Moscow, 11 March 2010

The title of "Legend of the Russian Rock" stuck to me a long time.
Already in the early '80s Mikhail Sokolov, the Bish-I, were
Legend of the scene. And once did it happen?

We start from a distance. I was born in Moscow in 1953
(Year of death of the Tyrant) Taganka, in a family of servicemen. When I was six years old his parents divorced, leaving an indelible mark on life. My mother was alone with two children, struggled to put all the best in their children. Since the age of six I was in a music school named "Ipolitova - Ivanov" on the violin. Let's face it, the friendship with the tool did not take place, and studied for two years with a plea was moved to the piano, but with this tool, contact has not taken place.

"What music?" - When all the boys after school to their necks in snowdrifts or at the rink. So temporarily stopped music lessons, but not for long. In 1963, Mom bought especially for my older sister's tape-prefix "Homo" and the music sounded in the house "the Beatles", Chuck Berry, "Rolling Stones". "I want to be" Ringo Starr "," - said I took my mother's knitting needles, put a pillow on the couch, turned on the Beatles and began to knock the dust. This went on for quite a while, until I passed the entrance exam, was not in that - the same music school, but the class of percussion teacher Sergei Hodneva. I had to get acquainted with the new notes, engage in staging, to play "Turkish Rondo" on a xylophone, but the most important teacher remained a tape recorder. Friendship with the shock lasted for a long time for the whole quarter of a century ...

It is difficult to accurately recall all the dates, and, still more than thirty five years, or rather thirty-seven, but one thing that I was very lucky. I was lucky in many ways. First time when I was born, it was time for change. Away with the cult of Stalin and Khrushchev's thaw came. In Moscow, there were the first bit of the group to which the performance very much like to get, or at least stand by the window to listen.

I will never forget how I and my school friend Valera Lichonin watched my sister. In fact, I vaguely heard that she was going to go to the "seiche" which will play a group of "heirs." It was on Elektrozavodskaya in Honey Lane. We made our way over there, trying to make us not notice it. And here we are on the spot.

About the school or college hefty crowd of young people, some elongated hair, jeans, glasses, a la John Lennon. "There's something I first saw a long-haired guy, whose name was Yura, nicknamed" The Sun "(blond) - it was a leader Moscow hippies. To them, I Lihon and in the future and joined. amazing sight, all on edge, and no group!
Suddenly a car pulled up, out of which were removed some boxes, sailed over the heads of the big drum silvery-orange color. These were the "heirs", long-haired guys proud 16-17 years.

We are of course with boyfriend are curious, but let us inside no one is going. But even by the window, okay listen, we are still small, although bangs combed over his eyes already. We are waiting for some time ... young people begin to go back. We hear the conversation: "seiche will not! Director, seeing the crowd with long hair, forbade speech. '" This is a widespread situation that I faced as a member of the Moscow group.

And what is the long hair? This is when the hair is just a little cover up your ears and bangs to her eyebrows. Yes Jura "Sun" hair that night were a little longer than the chin, it is now called the "square". He seemed terribly hairy. After several years in the "Successful purchase" my hair will be far below the shoulders.

"Why?" - You ask - "talk all the time talking about hair." Because time was so st. Long hair was a business card and a symbol of all that is new, familiar as it is now fashionable to speak of advancement of young people, a sign of disobedience to parents and authorities, the symbol of freedom.
In Khrushchev's time, began to filter news from the west - BIT music, long hair, all kinds of clothes that are either imported from abroad, friends, or you could buy a Moscow fartsy (speculators).
The theory is firmly hippies began to enter into the minds of the youth of the sixties. It was a wonderful time. We began to realize that we live in a beautiful country, with a crappy system and the best thing we could do to their appearance, their behavior and the music we were trying to play (albeit very badly at first) to blow up this socialist system with its dogmas and bans on all non Soviet.

We lived fine: ran on concerts BIT Group, went on nature hippovat, read forbidden books, rehearsing some nemyslemmye work, listening to music and a lot of music and all liked it.
But the most important thing is that then was a very trendy BLUES!
