Dick Waterman: Focus on the Blues Myths - Michael Limnios

Photographer, agent, manager, producer, promoter, Richard Waterman is the only person inducted in The Blues Hall of Fame who was not either a performing artist or a record company executive. He established himself in the Blues community as a diligent advocate for the artists and the art of Blues. Waterman is primarily known today as an archivist and photographer of Blues, Country, Rock and Jazz legends from Mississippi John Hurt to Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. His commitment to documenting the Blues artists he worked with and came into contact with throughout the years is legendary.
Waterman studied journalism at Boston University in the 1950s. He moved on to write for Broadside Magazine and became its feature editor. In 1963, he began to promote local shows with blues artists including Mississippi John Hurt and Booker "Bukka" White. The next year, he went to Mississippi on a quest that eventually led to the "rediscovery" of legendary blues singer Son House.
Following this, he founded Avalon Productions, the first booking agency ever formed to represent blues artists. Within a few years, he was representing House, Hurt, White, Skip James, Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, Junior Wells, J. B. Hutto and many others. He also promoted concerts by folk and rock acts in the Boston area. In the late 1960s he met a young female guitarist and singer named Bonnie Raitt and persuaded her to begin what has become a long, fruitful music career.

As the older blues artists died, Waterman’s responsibilities shifted to taking care of their estates and providing for their heirs. He moved to Oxford, Mississippi, in the 1980s and began a second career publishing the photographs of blues, folk, country and jazz artists that he had been taking since the early 1960s. His book Between Midnight and Day: The Last Unpublished Blues Archive contains about 100 of his photographs from the 1960s onwards.
In 1993 Waterman was instrumental in placing a new headstone on the grave of Mississippi Fred McDowell with funding from Bonnie Raitt through the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund. Waterman delivered a stirring tribute to McDowell, an early mentor of younger musicians including Raitt, at the dedication ceremony on August 6, 1993, in Como, Mississippi.

Done Changed My Way of Living - Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt

Henry Saint Clair Fredericks (born May 17, 1942), who uses the stage name Taj Mahal, is an American Grammy Award winning blues musician. He incorporates elements of world music into his music. A self-taught singer-songwriter and film composer who plays the guitar, banjo and harmonica (among many other instruments), Mahal has done much to reshape the definition and scope of blues music over the course of his almost 50 year career by fusing it with nontraditional forms, including sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific.

Bonnie Lynn Raitt (born November 8, 1949) is an American blues singer-songwriter and a renowned slide guitar player. During the 1970s, Raitt released a series of acclaimed roots-influenced albums which incorporated elements of blues, rock, folk and country, but she is perhaps best known for her more commercially accessible recordings in the 1990s including "Nick of Time", "Something to Talk About", "Love Sneakin' Up on You", and the slow ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me". Raitt has received nine Grammy Awards in her career and is a lifelong political activist.

Singer-songwriter-guitarist John Enghauser returns to San Fran for a special show at the popular Vin Club,

John Enghauser

"Skillful artist whose amiable, laid-back recordings demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, especially in his acoustic guitar and the way instruments are placed in the mix...what's distinctive about his brand of pop-rock is its decided smooth-jazz influence in some of the guitar interludes ("Blame") and in his use of the Rhodes keys." MUSIC CONNECTION

Back In San Francisco For One Night Only! At The Vin Club - Saturday, Oct. 29

(San Francisco) - He's back, if only for one night: Singer-songwriter-guitarist John Enghauser returns to San Fran for a special show at the popular Vin Club, 515 Broadway, Saturday, October 29. 9 p.m. No cover. Info: (415) 277-7228 or www,thevinclub.com.

John's thought-provoking, from-the-heart songs can be heard to full effect on his most recent album, "Lost In the Pages" (Blue Pie Records).

Enghauser capped another year of musical growth and recognition among his peers with his selection as a "Hot 100 Live Artist For 2011" by longtime respected publication, MUSIC CONNECTION. Selected by the magazine's Senior Editors from a talent pool of several thousand entries, many in the yearly "Hot 100" list often go onto receive lucrative record and touring deals. Now in its twenty-fifth year of publication, Music Connection is distributed throughout the U.S. and Europe as well.

Watch a live performance by John Engahuser of the title track from "Lost In The Pages" at the Whiskey A Go-Go in Hollywood here:

"There's something cool happening in the local singer/songwriter scene. Catchy tunes are the order of the day. There's a fusion of influence coming from soul and prog rock. I wish I could make up a genre name for it right now. John Enghauser has his original take on the sound. His new release, LOST IN THE PAGES, is getting the notice it deserves..." SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

John Enghauser Live at Slim's

In addition to performing all vocals, John plays guitar, bass and keyboards on Lost In The Pages (Blue Pie Records), which has been played in 13 countries worldwide including England, Australia, Germany, France, New Zealand, Canada and the U.S.

Among Enghauser's favorite songs on "Lost In The Pages" is "Cognition, Inc." "This is a funky re-tooling of a tune I wrote with my former band, Jamawokee. It's a completely different song now and I even changed up the lyrics a bit. The lyric is still one of my favorites. It's a satire which pokes fun of the American media and how much they shape our lives in the way we think and do things without us even knowing it. Think about how often you do, say, wear and buy things based on what you've seen, heard or read in the media. Cognition, Inc. is this big mind-controlling machine that we all submit to which claims to fulfill all of our wildest dreams. We all buy into it, but at what cost?" On a more sensitive note, "So Many People" is "an ode to Jaco Pastorius, the ingenious fusion bassist who died tragically. His biography is the most fascinating story I've ever read. I think it's the only book I've ever read twice. This is one of my favorite songs and one of the best composing jobs I think I've ever done. Sometimes when I listen to the complexities of it I can't believe it came from me. And it grooves so hard! What's ironic about the way I recorded the song is that it's the only time I played the bass line with a pick. I don't think Jaco ever played with a pick in his life."

Michael Z Cummings New Release Coming

Michael Z. Cummings Pic

Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist Michael Z. Cummings To Release "Storyteller"

Performs Locally: "Art Of Health" Benefit@Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic - Fri. July 22

<>

The Art of Health Poster

(SILVERLAKE) -
Michael Z. Cummings writes songs about people, for people. The Los Angeles-based, singer-songwriter-guitarist grew up in Boston surrounded by music. The deep bluesy music of Son House and Mississippi John Hurt oozed through the cracks of his brother's room. The street performances, live gigs and public performances by the students at Berklee, Boston Conservatory and New England Conservatory were a constant happening. From records, tapes and the radio, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and the Beatles, and were listened to, synthesized and memorized. This is why Michael picked up a guitar and just started playing.

And play he did. Electric Rhythm Guitar with a flat pick, Classical guitar, Ragtime, Jazz and Country pickin'. Michael also used his vocals and his amazing writing talent to express his observations of the world around him. Becoming a singer/songwriter was about connecting emotionally with listeners. To him it was about becoming less of a guitarist and more of a poet; less of a participant and more of an observer. This, in turn, led to Michael's 2010Los Angeles Music Awards nomination for "Best Male Songwriter." His always-humble demeanor and keen eye for the human experience makes him a musician who moves listeners to both action and reflection.

Catch a very special performance by Michael Z. Cummings at the "Art of Health" special event happening at the Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic , 3224 W. Sunset Blvd., Silverlake, Friday, July 22. 5-10 p.m. Donations graciously and greatly appreciated. Info: (323) 660-7959 or log onto www.hsfreeclinic.org. Organized by FANS - "a creative group of folks who have come together to benefit the Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic." Cummings also performs at the "Rock For Vets 2" Benefit Concert in Long Beach on Saturday, July 30; and has a CD Release Party for Storyteller at the Pig N' Whistle in Hollywood on Saturday, August 20.

Perdido Street Blues - New Black Eagle Jazz Band

Long popular in the New England area, the New Black Eagle Jazz Band has been quite consistent ever since its formation in Sept. 1971 by cornetist Tony Pringle. The leader, whose style is based on Bunk Johnson, Kid Howard and (to a lesser extent) Kid Thomas Valentine, sets the sound for the group and gives it a primitive oldtime feel. At the time of the New Black Eagle's debut recording in 1972 (for GHB), the personnel also included trombonist Stan Vincent, clarinetist Stan McDonald, pianist Bob Pilsbury, banjoist Pete Bullis, Eli Newberger on tuba and drummer Pam Pameijer. Through the years the group (also known simply as the Black Eagle Jazz Band) has managed to keep largely the same personnel. Only the clarinet spot (which has been occupied by McDonald, Rudi Ballieu, Brian Oglivie, Hugh Blackwell and for quite awhile by Billy Novick) has undergone some turnover. The New Black Eagle Jazz Band, who have appeared at many classic jazz festivals, regularly in the New England area and on several European tours, has recorded extensively for their own Black Eagle label plus GHB, Dirty Shame, Fat Cat Jazz, Philips, Philo and Stomp Off. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Tribute to Elmore

I'm sure that Derek Trucks and Bob Margolin need no introduction. It's great to see them play a fine tribute to Elmore James.

Whammer Jammer - J Geils Band

This is a band that was formed last year from a number of the participants on the Annual Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise. This was a new concept to actually tour after the cruise was completed and resulted in an album. Magic Dick has always been one of my favorite contemporary harmonica players. This is Magic Dick leading the band "let me hear ya Dickie"....
