Another Planet Music LTD. artist: Mississippi MacDonald - Do Right, Say Right - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Do Right, Say Right , from Mississippi MacDonald and  I really like it. Opening with easy shuffle, I Was Wrong , Mississippi MacDonald is firing on all cylinders with a great soulful voice and fat, BB King like guitar phrasing, joined by Phil Dearing on keys, Elliot Boughen on bass and Mark Johnson-Brown on drums. One of my favorite tracks on the release is funky blues, It Can't Hurt Me with it's Albert King influenced guitar riffs and MacDonalds solid vocals. Organ and horn accents throughout buy Dearing really punch up the track and aggressive bass lead by Boughen adds real bottom. Check out the tasty guitar lead on Drinker's Blues . MacDonals's fat bends and double stop accents really sets this track with strong backing vocals by Lucy Dearing. Slow Blues, If You Want A Good Cup Of Coffee is another of my favorite tracks on the release. MacDonald has a really solid voice, no taking away from that but wh...

24 Pesos

Image
24 PESOS is a band from London, UK that is formed by four musicians with a passion for Blues, Soul, Funk and the rhythms of New Orleans. Not content to simply rehash and imitate, 24 PESOS twist the traditional Blues form, blending the raw energy and down home grooves of the Meters with the sophisticated feel and harmony of John Scofield, John Mayer and Ray Charles while staying true and respectful to their Blues roots. Once upon a time guitarist, singer, songwriter Julian Burdock had a dream. Wouldnt it be great to be in a band called 24Pesos. In 2006 Silas Maitland and Julian Burdock wrote and produced a record for legendary soul singer Geno Washington. The idea for that record was to capture Genos live energy and improvisational approach. The album was a return to form for Geno who regards this record as his most exciting and original to date. It was during the recording of that record that Burdock and Maitland decided to put together a group to play live and record their own mater...

Long Distance Call - Shakey Vick

Image
Shakey Vick got into blues in the late fifties and early sixties in various duos and blues bands around London. In 1963 he formed his first band, teaming up with Chris Youlden. They won a heat of an R&B contest and did a gig at the Marquee, which was recorded by Giorgio Gomulsky of Yardbirds connection. Shakey and Chris did a few duo gigs and also worked occasionally with Dave Peverett in Dave’s band Lonesome Jax. In 1967 The first Shakey Vick Big City Blues Band was formed and started to gig around London and the home-counties circuit, including the Marquee, 100 Club, Klooks Kleek, etc. During those early years he worked with many American artists, including the late Champion Jack Dupree, Arthur Big Boy Crudup, and Johnny Shines. At about this time Shakey was asked to join Savoy Brown when their harp player left. Shakey had to turn the offer down because Harry Simmonds, the manager could only offer half of what Shakey needed to live on. While the others in the band were all sin...

STEVE PHILLIPS

Image
Steve Phillips (born 18 February 1948) is an English blues and country musician. He is mainly renowned for being part of the supergroup Notting Hillbillies along with the Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler and Brendan Croker Phillips was born in London, England, but when still a child his family moved to Leeds; he has lived in Yorkshire for most of his life. His father, Harry Phillips, was a sculptor (Harry Phillips inspired Mark Knopfler to write the song "In the Gallery," from the debut Dire Straits album), and his mother was a painter. At the age of 13, Phillips began learning to play guitar and started playing in different pubs in Leeds. In 1965, at the age of 17, he formed a band called Easy Mr. Steve's Bootleggers in which he mainly played piano. The group eventually recorded some demos but these were not released until 1996. They split up in 1967, although the various musicians continued to work together in different combinations from time to time. In 1968, after...

Glass Castle recording Artist - Hat's Off Gentlemen It's Adequate - Invisible

Image
I just received the debut release, Invisible , from Hat's Off Gentlemen It's Adequate . This is no blues recording but it is adventurous and interesting. The recording opens with While I Still Can , a track that reminds me of early San Francisco rock. This has all of the clues, free flowing jamming, electric guitars and flute. The band is made up of Malcolm Galloway (vocals/guitar/keyboard) Kathryn Thomas (flute) Mark Gatland (bass) Ibon Bilbao (guitar) Rudy Burrell (drums - live). Me Again has a bit of a heavier tone sounding more like what David Gilmore may have sounded like if he had been born in Seattle. Frail Hurricane has a much more of an arena rock sound with a little Billy Idol or David Bowie mixed in and overall is not my favorite, but there is something about this that catches my attention. Forgive me but I find myself singing along... Blow Me... Blow Me... Blow Me Away. By The Water is a solemn track in the vein of the earliest of King Crimson tracks ... yes I...

Ronny Jordan

Image
One of the acid jazz movement's most prominent guitarists, London-born Ronny Jordan is widely credited with returning the instrument to its rightful place as a major force in modern-day jazz; despite outcries from purists, few other artists of his era proved more pivotal in knocking down the long-immutable boundaries of contemporary black music. The son of a preacher, Jordan's early musical history was rooted in gospel; his first public performances were with gospel groups, but the outbreak of Brit-funk during the early '80s led him to begin exploring other avenues of music, culminating in a fascination with jazz. A self-taught guitarist, his early influences included Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, and Grant Green, and when hip-hop began to take off, Jordan started exploring ways to fuse jazz and rap together. The first fruit of his endeavors was the single "After Hours," a primitive foray into what would eventually become known as acid jazz. Record compani...

Early In The Morning - Eddie Martin Band

Image
Born in London in the 60’s, Eddie Martin wrote his first songs aged 12 and, influenced by acoustic and rock singer-songwriters from both sides of the Atlantic, turned professional after being nominated for Best British Blues Guitarist, Band and Album between 1996 and 1998. Since then he has built a strong following as an acoustic artist and charismatic band leader, he has also recorded and performed with many greats from both sides of the Atlantic, including John Mayall, Peter Green, Buddy Guy, and Taj Mahal. His prolific recording and touring schedule takes him from his native UK all round the world to major events - first touring the USA to some acclaim in 1999. Recent years have for example, seen his big band headline the Colne International Rhythm and Blues Festival in the UK, his trio perform at the prestigious Cahors Blues Festival in France, and attend the World Harmonica Festival in Germany where he performed solo, held a harmonica masterclass and judged the world blues har...

Reconsider - Strayhorn

Image
Paul Ferreira – vocals, guitar, harmonica Paul began playing the blues in the early 1970s. Largely self taught, he has been making music and writing songs for his own interest and enjoyment ever since. Strayhorn began as a solo project, made possible by affordable multi-track home recording, with the distant dream of finding the right people to play with. In the summer of 2010, after accepting an invitation from an old friend, Algerian band leader Seddik Zebiri, to his Sunday jam at Charlie Wright's in Hoxton, he was fortunate enough to connect with some fine jazz musicians who share his love of the blues. Oli Arlotto – tenor saxophone French born, living in London for many years, Oli is one of the most exciting and versatile horn players on the British jazz scene with a rich and energetic sound. He has toured in Europe with Vincent Arnaldi and numerous other French jazz bands. In 1998 he formed the 5 piece jazz-rock band 804d, touring nationwide and in London. Since then Oli ...

Side Tracked - Ramon Goose Band

Image
Whether performing as an acoustic blues/gospel trio or as an electric blues band Ramon Goose strives to bring both sophistication and soul to his music. The Ramon Goose Band has been performing in venues and festivals across the UK and Europe to great acclaim. What you will hear is dazzling guitar playing and a kick ass band performing hard hitting Texas Blues to sophisticated Uptown Jazzy Blues and everything in between. They have just completed a national tour of France (which included four maximum security prisons!!!) to road test new material for the “Uptown Shuffle” album out later this year. Ramon Goose has been described as the “British Ry Cooder” and has paid his dues to earn such a title: working as a sideman to greats such as Eric Bibb & Pee Wee Ellis, producing /co-writing the acclaimed “Drew,Mississippi” album with Mississippi born Bluesman Boo Boo Davis and also fusing modern sounds with the ground breaking and very successful Nublues project. Currently Ramon is workin...

Since I've Been Lovin' You - Bare Bones Boogie Band

Image
The Bare Bones Boogie Band are a stripped-down, no nonsense blues band, closest in sound and attitude to the classic British blues boom of the 60s and 70s, when bands like Free, Fleetwood Mac and the Stones were inspired by BB King and Robert Johnson, and in America when Janis Joplin was re-inventing Etta James. Live, the BBBB give it their all, with no apologies for their rawness, nor for their tenderness – heavy, soulful blues! Formed in London from across the UK – from Glasgow and St. Andrews in Scotland, Birmingham and Manchester in England - the BBBB unites a wealth of experience both 'Live' and and in the studio. Together, since October 2008, the band played their first gig within three weeks and finished their first year together with an exclusive appearance at the O2 Dome in London. Catch them if you can . . . ! If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! I’m looking for great talent and trying to grow the audience for your favorites band!...

New Release: Andrew D. Gordon - Boogie-Woogie and the Blues - Review and the Blues

Image
I recently received a cd of piano boogie and blues by Andrew D. Gordon called Boogie-Woogie and the Blues . This is a straight up piano cd with 9 original tracks. The cd opens with the title track and is a stark contrast to the overproduced recordings that I sometimes receive. Just a man and his piano. Raggedy Blues is an uptempo take blend of Boogie and Ragtime. It's actually a pretty interesting take on the fusion of the two. Boogie In the Sunshine is a straight ahead boogie and one that you will likely find enjoyable if you like boogie piano. I like the piano syncopation that Andrew gets going in the track. Boogie With Nicky is moves along pretty quickly and may be a nod to Gordon's appreciation for piano great Nicky Hopkins. Come On You Blues ventures on the boogie train in to a jazz genre. I like the change and it is quite sophisticated. Holly and Ben's Boogie is a cool 12 bar blues with piano improvisation. H.R. Blues is a slow grinding blues and possibly my f...
