💿 ALBUM REVIEW: Rafael Greco - Versos bajo mi sombra

Image
Rafael Greco —the legendary Venezuelan saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and long-time creative engine behind Guaco —is finally stepping completely out of the big-band shadow to do exactly what he wants. On his new album, Verses Under My Shadow , he skips the predictable jazz tropes to build something way cooler: a hypnotic, avant-garde sandbox where Central African polyrhythms , vocal loops , and literary vibes collide, backed by heavy hitters like Dave Weckl and Jimmy Haslip . It’s an ambitious, deeply personal masterclass in groove and texture, and it sets the perfect stage for the sonic trip we're about to dive into.   🎵 LISTEN & SUPPORT THE ALBUM   Add this Record to Your Collection Available in Digital Formats. 🛒 Buy Album on Amazon Store As an Amazon Associate, Bman earns from qualifying purchases. Cleopatra Records artist: Cactus - Temple of Blues II - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Temple of Blues II , from Cactus and it's strong blues rock...old school! Opening with Back Door Man Pt 1&2 , Eric Gales leads the way on vocal and guitr with Artie Dillon on rhythm guitar, Billy Sheehan on bass and featuring the driving drum work of Carmine Appice . Super. Pat Travers is featured on lead and slide guitar on Moanin' At Midnight with Ed Terry on vocal, Dillon on rhythm guitar, Jim Caputo on bass and Appice on organ and drums. Travers style really give the track a great bluesy feel, really grinding in. Very cool. Ron Bumblefoot Thal on guitar leads the way on Tokin Chokin' , a fun, country pop rocker with edge. Terry handles vocals and with plenty of splash cymbals by Appice, and Johnny Rod on bass, Bumblefoot really sails on slide. Tail Dragger has a Brit blues rock feel with Terry on vocal and Rockin Jake on harp. Appice's driving drum line with Rudy Sarzo on bass, gives guitarist ...

Leggero Records artist: Victoria Cardona - Que Paso - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Que Paso , from Victoria Cardona , and it's fully bodied Latin music. Opening with Que Paso En La Habana , Victoria Cardona on vocal and guitar, fully backed vocally by Marilyn Scott , Jimmy Branly and Tim Goodman really get a warm Latin feel. With Kevin Richard on percussion, Rene Camacho on bass, Goodman on organ, San Miguel Perez on Cuban Tres Guitar , Francisco Torres on trombone, and some real nice flute work by Justo Almario . Solid opener. Another original track, Ghost has a strong radio appeal with Cardona playing some really tasty guitar lead, joined by Jimmy Branly on drums, Kevin Ricard on percussion, Jimmy Haslip on bass, Bill Payne on piano, Goodman on guitar, organ mandolin and backing vocals. Very nice. Rhodes Royale really gets in the slot with Cardona on vocal, guitar, percussion and steel drums, joined by Rene Camacho on bass. It's up tempo rhythm really gives the track a lively feel. One...

Subcat Records artist: Grupo Pagan - Power - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Power , from Grupo Pagan and it's a solid Latin flavored rocker. Opening with title track, Power , Edgar Pagan sets the lead with an excellent Latin bass line complimented with a full compliments of percussion by Emedin Rivera on drums, Joshua Dekaney on percussion, Jimmy Branley on percussion, Bill DiCostimo on keys and featuring Edgar on vocal, Este on hand drum and chants, Aam Fisher on nicely stylized guitar and backing vocals by Rhonda Paduano and Jose Varona . Energetic opener. Another track with strong Latin rhythms is Tito with clean guitar lead by Jeff Richman and Bill DeCosimo on keys, with solid bass work by Pagan, Luis Conte and Rivera on percussion and Joe Driscoll on beatbox . Sol has a cool Brazilian feel led by Daniel Pardo on flute with Pagan on bass and vocal, excellent work by Jimmy Haslip on synth, JoseVarona on drums, and Dave Donley on percussion. Very nice. Wrapping the release i...

ZOHO Records artist: Juan Perea - Lightkeeper - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release Lightkeeper , from Juan Perea and it shows depth including introspective, contemplative and Latin flavored compositions. Opening with Tito Puente's Ove Como Va , of course famously interpreted by rocker Carlos Santa. Featuring Eric Marienthal on alto sax, Gary Haase on bass, Steve Thornton on percussion, and Dean Brown on guitar Juan Perea really does a nice job on piano maintaining the Latin influence and pulling in the rock styling with brilliant guitar riffs by Brown. I really like El Sueno with it's quiet attack and a mix of piano and electric keys by Perea and light and tight bottom by Thornton and Haase. Breaking into full samba Perea really gets it rolling and again Brown lights up the fretboard. Very nice. Remembering You has an introspective melody blending keys and piano over Haase on bass and Tom Brechtlein on drums, and with a smart acoustic guitar solo by Brown. Wrapping the release is title track, L...

Blue Canoe Records artist: Neff Irizarry - Cambio (Change) - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Cambio , from Neff Irizarry , and it's vibrant guitar with hot Latin rhythms. Opening with Adelante , composer and guitar lead, Neff Irizarry leads the way with excellent fluid melody paired with Martin Fabricius on vibraphone, with the rhythmic support of Jimmy Haslip on bass and Picardo Padilla on percussion. Strong opener. Cabo Rojo in 6/8 gives Irizarry plenty of room to breathe with both extended phrases and shorter punctuation, over Fabricius' well placed accents. A steady rhythm by Padilla anchors the piece giving it a nice flow. Led Zep's, The Rain Song is a nice diversion handled by lush melodic phrasing by Irizarry over the simple Latin rhythm of Padilla. El Swing De La Finca really does move with the melody laid down by Fabricius and Irizarry in tandem. Irizarry takes the first line solo and Irizarry the second over the punchy bottom by Haslip and Padilla. My favorite track on the release. Another...

Blue Canoe Records artist: Randy Hoexter - Tomorrowsville - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Tomorrowsville , from Randy Hoexter and it's a strong fusion release. Opening with Rosetta Stone , with it's jagged drum rhythm by John David and Randy Hoexter on piano, this track is humming. Sam Skelton adds some solid phrasing on sax and Justin Powell on trumpet join Jimmy Haslip on bass to really fill out the track but this is a great opener. The Dragonfly has a funky bottom and the addition of Mike Stern is a killer idea with his signature guitar work in contrast with Hoexter's clean yet adventurous piano phrasing. Very nice. Up tempo, The Wine-Dark Sea really gives Sam Skelton a broad stage to really rip on sax and features Roberta Setzu on lead vocal. Another track with with exciting pace is Particle Accelerator . Hoexter and Skelton both lay down really nice solo concepts and the tight rhythms of Haslip, David and Emrah Kotan on percussion, complimented by Powell on trumpet and Eric Alexander on tromb...

Marc Ciprut - Moonshine - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Moonshine , from Marc Ciprut and it's a cool, jazz rocker. Opening with title track, Moonshine , guitar wiz, Marc Ciprut lays out the melody over a funky, James Brown like rhythm with Ettienne Lytle on organ, Jimmy Haslip on bass, Tobias Ralph on drums and Daniel Sadownick on percussion. Super opener. Cutie has a easy Latin feel and Ciprut lead is very stylistically clean. Lytle  on Wurlitzer really adds nice thickness and James Genus on bass holds down the bottom with Tommi Rautiainen on drums. Ciprut's approach is a bit more aggressive on No More Room with an almost Beck like attack and Jon Cowherd rocks a real nice solo on Wurlitzer, Genus on bass and Tobias Ralph on drums make this my favorite track on the release. Wrapping the release is Funk You with it's super rhythm. Ciprut lays down a funky rhythm line and overlays the melody. Lytle on organ and clavinet adds significant depth and Genus on bass an...
