Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa release new album "Seesaw"

The 2nd album from Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa
Released on Deluxe CD+DVD and Double Vinyl
UK Release: Monday 20th May
US Release: Tuesday 21st May
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Beth Hart, known for her raw and powerful blues-rock sound, wraps her expressive vocals around classic soul covers on Seesaw, the second album that grew out of her musical ties with the acclaimed blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. The album will be released on Deluxe CD+DVD and Double Vinyl in the UK and Europe on Monday 20th May by Provogue Records.
BETH HART AND JOE BONAMASSA RETURN WITH THEIR FOLLOW UP OF CLASSIC BLUES AND SOUL COVERS, HOT ON THE HEELS OF 2011's SUCCESSFUL "DON’T EXPLAIN" ALBUM

After their first successful collaboration on Don’t Explain this highly talented duo is back with Seesaw. As with Don’t Explain, Seesaw is tastefully produced by Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, John Hiatt, Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin).
"Beth’s got a pretty heady voice, very reminiscent of Janis Joplin," says Shirley. "She’s also got a lot of Etta James in her. With this material, there’s gentleness to the way she delivers the most heartfelt tunes. She’s done a fantastic job."

Bonamassa and Hart first crossed paths on the road numerous times, and played many of the same festivals in Europe. In early 2010, Bonamassa attended one of her concerts in London. "It was killer," says Bonamassa. He suggested they do a project together sometime.
Don’t Explain took shape that summer. Now two years later, the follow-up album, Seesaw, captures 11 new blistering tracks. The album features covers from Billie Holiday (Them There Eyes), Melody Gardot (If I Tell You I Love You), Etta James (A Sunday Kind Of Love) and the title track Seesaw made popular by Aretha Franklin.
Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa’s debut album Don’t Explain sold over 150.000 copies in Europe, and charted in 10 countries including the UK, Germany, Benelux, Denmark, and Sweden.

The Album – Track By Track
1. "Them There Eyes"
Seesaw, Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa’s second album collaboration, opens with "Them There Eyes," made famous in 1939 by Billie Holiday—one of Hart’s biggest inspirations. "My mother turned me on to this song when I was a kid," says Beth. "I love the bubbliness. It’s sexy, it’s fun, and it has a great swing to it."
2. "Close To My Fire"
Next up, Hart offers a super sultry take on a much more contemporary cover, 2012’s "Close To My Fire" from Slackwax. "I didn’t immediately jump on this song, but my husband did and my manager loved it," she says. "I was intimidated because the woman who sang it with Slackwax just nailed it, and I had to find my own way of getting it right. It didn’t click with me until the day we did it. I felt like I ended up having nice timing on the song, and the band played amazing."

3. "Nutbush City Limits"

On "Nutbush City Limits," Hart wails with an intensity that would make Tina Turner proud. "Kevin sprung that song on me the last day of recording. He said, ‘We’re going to do this in half an hour.’ I remembered that in the Tina Turner movie What’s Love Got To Do With It, Ike is being abusive to her, telling her to sing the song like a man, to sing it hard. I adore Tina, and doing "Nutbush City Limits" was a big challenge. I went outside, listened to her version, and then came back in the studio and did it. It ended up feeling incredible to sing, and the band killed it."

4. "I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know"
Hart’s slow and soulful burn on "I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know" pairs dramatically with Bonamassa’s smoking guitar. "It’s a Donnie Hathaway song that I really got turned on to when I saw a live version of it that Amy Winehouse did in France. I found it online. To prepare, I learned Donnie’s version, but Amy did an amazing job with it as well."

5. "Can’t Let Go"
The tempo kicks up several notches with Hart’s tight, rocking vocals on "Can’t Let Go," from Lucinda Williams’ Grammy-winning 1998 album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. "I love the southern appeal of this one—playing out of a little sugar shack, and singing that song about your man walking away from you. It’s a classic," says Hart.
6. "Miss Lady"
Up next is a fierce cover of "Miss Lady," the Buddy Miles song that was originally produced by Jimi Hendrix. "Kevin played this for me when we recorded Don’t Explain, and I didn’t want to do it," says Hart. "He suggested it again this time, and I still didn’t want to do it. It wasn’t that I didn’t think it was a great song, it was just so vocally demanding. I felt I would screw it up. At the end of one long day, he said, ‘Let’s just do a quick pass on it.’ My throat was so tired, I just screamed it out, and he kept it. It was a nice surprise."

7. "If I Tell You I Love You"

Hart revisits Melody Gardot’s songbook to deliver a sultry, jazzy rendition of "If I Tell You I Love You." "Her voice and her songwriting are incredible. It feels so good to sing this song, it just rolls off the tongue. The lyrics, the melody, the vibe are great," says Hart.
8. "Rhymes"
It pairs beautifully with "Rhymes," which Hart found on an album by her idol Etta James. "I have a huge collection of recordings by Etta," she says. "I decided to go through every single one, and I came across ‘Rhymes.’ I loved the low end singing, the bottom end stuff. It has attitude, but there’s an innocence to the attitude, and a wonderful groove."
9. "Sunday Kind Of Love"
Another Etta James song follows, a gorgeous take on the classic "Sunday Kind Of Love." "I have loved this song forever," says Hart. "It was one that Kevin and I both agreed on, but he was the first to suggest it, he beat me to the punch. I worked hard on it and tried to have faith in myself. This song was a big one for my mother. So I was thinking about Etta, and also about my mom, knowing that she would love it, and that it would mean something special to her."

10. "Seesaw"
"Seesaw," is a Don Covay/Steve Cropper composition from Aretha Franklin’s 1968 album Aretha Now. "This is another one I’ve always adored," says Hart. "It’s really high up in the range, and I asked Kevin to take it down a whole step. He said, ‘No, you can do it.’ It’s a really fun song, high energy, with a lot of attitude. Kevin liked it for the title track because he felt it was a good way of describing the ups and downs of the record."

11. "Strange Fruit"
The album closes with Hart’s haunting and atmospheric version of "Strange Fruit," a song that began as a poem about American racism—and lynching—by Abel Meeropol. "This is one of the most amazing songs ever written. The lyrical concept is one of the most important things in American history. Billie Holiday and Nina Simone both did great recordings, but Nina’s is the one that Kevin really had me listen to. I don’t have any personal relationship to slavery in my family, but I can at least sing it from a place of compassion."

BETH HART
Singer-songwriter Beth Hart is known for the passionate conviction of her soul-baring performances, on record and onstage.
The strength of her vocals is matched by what she conveys in her lyrics, making her take on confessional song-writing authentic and heartfelt.
On 2010's My California - Hart's most recent album prior to collaborating with Joe Bonamassa for the blues-soul covers collection Don't Explain she is as raw and emotionally immediate as ever, singing of life's travails, lessons learned, and contentment gained.

She also adds a new tenderness to her powerful blues-rock sound that intimately draws listeners in.
The British music website Rocktopia wrote, "each track impresses on both a spiritual and musical level, and the fact that everyone should be able to identify with elements of Beth's narratives simply adds to the attraction."
It follows up 2007's 37 Days, which was recorded, produced, and mixed like a live album (in only 37 days), with a 12-camera shoot capturing all the action for the DVD The Making of 37 Days.

A Los Angeles native, Hart began playing the piano at age 4, and has made music all her life. She attended L.A. High School for the performing arts, and released her first album, Immortal, in 1996.
JOE BONAMASSA
As Joe Bonamassa grows his reputation as one of the world's most masterful guitar players, he is also emerging as a charismatic blues-rock star and singer-songwriter of stylistic depth and emotional resonance.
Bonamassa's latest solo album, 2011's Dust Bowl - his tenth, is his highest charting (#1 Blues, #37 on the Billboard 200) and best-selling to date. Recorded in Santorini, Greece, Nashville, Malibu, and Los Angeles, with Kevin "Caveman" Shirley producing, the album is a genre-bending mix of '60s-era British blues-rock (à la Beck and Clapton), roots-country, and blistering Delta blues.

Just one of his other projects, Black Country Communion, the British-American rock band he formed with Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner) and Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Billy Idol); their second album was released in June 2011.
Bonamassa tours the world regularly, and his ability to connect with live audiences is epic, with a career highlight being a sold-out show at London's Royal Albert Hall-where Eric Clapton joined him onstage (the concert is captured on the 2-DVD set Joe Bonamassa: Live From The Royal Albert Hall).

He has been chosen Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine's Readers Choice Awards for four consecutive years, and in 2009 was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the U.K.'s prestigious Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards. A child prodigy, Bonamassa began his career at age 12 opening shows for the legendary B.B. King.

BETH HART - OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY

Beth Hart has always been like a shooting star…take a nano-second to blink, and it’s already moved on. But for that wonderful moment, you saw “fireworks” like you’ve never experienced before.

Anybody who’s ever seen Beth perform live or who’s ever cranked up one of her albums knows she’s for real. This woman sings from the depths of her soul, and her voice tells you stories and paints pictures that you just know have to be real…that come from real life and real experiences. And, yeah, while sometimes those experiences had her blazing across the sky, other times she just crashed and burned.

“At times, I’ve been really down in my life”, Beth admits. “But you know, once you deal with it and make sense out of it, it can give you tremendous power.”

Beth started her career as far down as it gets…performing in the streets of L.A., sitting cross-legged with an acoustic guitar and singing her heart out. And her first major gigs weren’t in some concert hall or in some studio…she did the Chitlin’ Circuit. And, let me tell you, you don’t blow people away in those venues if you can’t deliver. It’s in this world that Beth’s fuse got lit, and a few lucky people got to experience the heat.

Fortunately for Beth, one of those people was David Wolff, who was instrumental in breaking Cyndi Lauper into superstardom. He heard it, he felt it…and he got it.

Beth beams, “Wolff, Man…this dude has been way more than just a Manager to me for 18 years. He’s one of my best friends…he’s family.”

And from that moment on, Beth went into lightspeed…unafraid to stretch out musically and try new genres. The only problem is that the world has had trouble keeping up with her…they started really getting into it and when they blinked, she had already moved on.

But, again, fortunately for Beth, along the way, there were people who were instantly attracted to her sparks and who really understood great music.

She got signed to Atlantic Records, and three of music’s top Producers, David Foster (produced such artists as Whitney Houston, Maria Carey, Celine Dion, Tony Braxton, Madonna and Michael Jackson), Hugh Padgham (Paul McCartney, The Police, Genesis and Sting) and Mike Clink (Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue and Jefferson Starship) were eager to work with her on first album, “Immortal.” This record sold very well in the Eastern U.S. and in faraway places like Africa, featuring the rockin’ title track and the incredible soul anthem, “Am I The One?” The world had been officially introduced to the raw power that is Beth Hart…but they blinked, and she had already moved on.

Her second album, “Screamin’ For My Supper”, a collaboration with her long-time bass player and ultimately, renowned producer, Tal Herzberg (R.I.P., dear Tal) included more pop influences and yielded her Top 5 Adult Contemporary Hit, “L.A. Song (Out Of This Town).” Now she was at the top of the charts both in the U.S. and overseas, and the world started to take notice…but they blinked, and she had already moved on.

And, like so many “comets’ before her, Beth was also starting to burn out. But, again, fortunately, people who loved her took notice. Her road manager (and eventually her husband), Scott Guetzkow, has always been right there for her. His strength helped lift her up and get her back on course.

“I am so lucky,” Beth admits, “that I have Scott in my life. He’s my rock and my reality check when things start getting out of hand.”

Now, Beth was once again looking to the future. In 2003, she released her life-affirming 3rd album, “Leave The Light On,” and the world felt the heat again. Billboard Magazine said, “One of the year’s most affecting albums. The stuff of icons.” But Beth still had places to go, so, when the world blinked, she had already moved on.

And by 2004, her skyrocket sent her overseas to Holland and Denmark. This was an experience like no other…because she had really redefined the incredible energy that’s Beth playing live. Her 2005 release, “Live at Paradiso” captured one of her most electrifying performances in history, before a sold-out crowd at this Amsterdam landmark venue. From that moment on, she performed to sold-out audiences at concerts, festivals and clubs.

It was then that something really remarkable happened…Beth Hart, the raw, soulful singer from the streets of L.A., suddenly started to reemerge. And Beth could feel it happening.

“I was starting to wonder if I still had what it took to go all the way. The Europeans, who have always really understood American-born music forms, were right there for me. They’ve given me so much support and so much confidence…I really, really love them.”

And Europe has rewarded her with hits for “L.A. Song (Out Of This Town),” “Leave The Light On,” “Good As It Gets,” “Take It Easy On Me,” “I’ll Take Care Of You,” (with Joe Bonamassa), “Your Heart Is As Black As Night,” (with Joe Bonamassa) and “Sister.”

And, from that moment on, a lot more really savvy musical geniuses have been drawn to the incredible fire that is Beth Hart.

Slash (former lead guitar of the rock superband, Guns N’ Roses) heard Beth and absolutely got it. She recorded a song with him called “Mother Maria” which is on the iTunes version of his solo album, “Slash.”

Beth recalls working with Slash. “He’s one of the mellowest musicians I’ve ever worked with…totally giving, a real team player.”

One of the greatest Rock/Blues/Fusion guitarists of all times, Jeff Beck, felt it right away and asked her to perform with him. She was the first lead singer to do a U.S. tour with Beck since Rod Stewart. Now, that’s saying something!

“Honest to God,” Beth says, “working with Jeff was like being with an enthusiastic and loving teenager. He gets totally inspired by other people’s talents, and we really fed off of each other’s energy!”

During this time (2007-2010), Beth released two more albums, “37 Days”, which produced the big hit in Europe, “As Good As It Gets” and her most personal work to date “My California”, which has spawned the single, “Sister”, now in heavy rotation on the U.K.’s BBC Radio.

And maybe her greatest collaboration has happened in the last year. She met Blues/Rock superstar guitarist, Joe Bonamassa, and they crafted a truly visionary album, “Don’t Explain,” produced by Kevin Shirley (producer for Led Zeppelin, Journey, Rush and Iron Maiden).

And Beth really appreciates that something special has happened to her. “When I started making this record with Joe, I got a feeling I haven’t had in a long time. For Joe, it’s all about the melody, and, as a singer, I feel so grateful to be working with someone who is so musically evolved. And Kevin Shirley is a genius. He gets you right to a place that makes you feel totally comfortable. He really knows how to work with artists.” Beth and Joe plan to do another album together in 2013.

Once again, thanks to “Don’t Explain” and live gigs with Joe, the world has stood up and taken notice of Beth Hart. It has been nominated at the 23rd Blues Music Awards for “Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year.” The Blues Rock Review has included the album in their “Top 20 Albums of 2011.” And maybe the London Times has said it best recently in their review of her concert at Dingwalls (and she is already sold out in Paris). “Don’t Explain has lifted her to a new level of rock n’ roll celebrity, and she was here to make the most of it.”

And now the best news of all is that Beth isn’t going away.

So what’s happened to Beth Hart…has she gone full circle, from the streets of L.A. to the Pop charts and now back her original raw soul? Maybe. Maybe her collaboration with Joe inspired her to reclaim her roots.

Has the world suddenly realized how amazing she is? When you look back at her career and all those who “got it from Day 1” (David Foster, Hugh Padgham, Mike Clink, Tal
Herzberg, Billboard Magazine, the European Charts, Slash, Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa, Kevin Shirley, the Blues Music Awards, the Blues Rock Review and now the London Times and sold-out shows in France), it seems like it was right there all along.

Or maybe it’s as simple as she and the world finally see each other eye-to-eye. At least that’s how Beth sees it.

“I’m so grateful, Man. I feel like I’ve arrived at a place where I’m really comfortable and ready to go all the way. I’m going to put my whole heart and soul into blowing European audiences away. And then I’d like to bring all that energy back to the U.S. and remind them where I came from.”

Doesn’t sound like the shooting star has slowed down at all, does it?

As legendary classic rock singer Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, Free) hit the stage, the audience jumped to its feet as Bonamassa performed Fire And Water and Walk In My Shadows.

"This show is a testament to an artist at the top of his game, and still growing," says Bonamassa’s producer Kevin Shirley. Likewise in the UK it charted at # 12, achieving his highest chart position here. The album has just been nominated for a 2012 Blues Music Award (Best Blues Rock Album), while Bonamassa was honoured as 2011's Guitarist of the Year by Guitar International. This January Joe was on the cover of Classic Rock magazine for the first time, creating a big impact outside of the blues genre.

Bonamassa's hard rock band Black Country Communion – with band mates Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian – was named "Best New Band of the Last 10 Years" by VH1 Classic's That Metal Show, and Best Breaktrhough Act at 2011's Classic Rock Magazine Awards. The band's 2-disc live album Live Over Europe is released on CD in the UK on Monday February 27th.

Something's Got a Hold on Me - Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa at the Echoplex, 9/19/11

DON’T EXPLAIN
Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa

The Album:
One of music’s most powerful female voices and one of the world’s greatest guitar players come together on the new album Don’t Explain, featuring soulful covers that both celebrate and rethink the original recordings. Each known for their potent and expressive blues-rock sounds, Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa deliver scorching versions of ten classic songs first made famous by artists including Billie Holiday, Etta James, Tom Waits, Ray Charles, Delaney & Bonnie, Bill Withers, and Aretha Franklin.

The album was recorded live in the studio over the course of four days in early 2011, with producer Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes) capturing the raw energy generated by Hart and Bonamassa’s spirited collaboration. As charged as the tracks are, Hart also colors her interpretations with tenderness and vulnerability, adding nuance in equal measure to passion. “Beth’s got a pretty heady voice, very reminiscent of Janis Joplin, and she’s also got a lot of Etta James in her, but hadn’t really accessed it yet,” says Shirley. “With this material, there is a gentleness to the way she delivers the most heartfelt tunes that she hasn’t shown before.”

Hart and Bonamassa are both based in L.A., but their collaboration grew out of the friendship they developed after crossing paths on the road numerous times, particularly when traversing the festival circuit in Europe. “I was, of course, a big fan of his,” says Hart. “I played a show in London in early 2010, and heard through the grapevine that he was there, though I didn’t see him.” Bonamassa also remembers the show—“It was killer,” he says. When they bumped into each other in Holland soon after, Hart recalls, “He mentioned we should do a project together.”

What evolved from that encounter was the idea for Don’t Explain, which Bonamassa came up with during the recording of his latest album, Dust Bowl, in Santorini, Greece in summer 2010. “I was up late one night, I couldn’t sleep. I was playing songs on my iPod from the reissue of Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out, which included all the opening acts from that Stones show,” he says. “As soon as the Ike & Tina Turner tracks came on, I just said out loud, ‘Beth Hart.’ I e-mailed Kevin, saying, ‘Let’s do a soul covers record with Beth,’ and he replied back, ‘Actually, that’s a great idea.’” Hart agreed, though she says, “When I got the call that he wanted to do a soul record with me, I figured I’d be the background singer. He said ‘no, you’re singing lead.’” Bonamassa says, “Beth has been an absolute hidden gem. She was a beautiful voice, she’s a fantastic singer. I wanted her front and center.’

Hart, Bonamassa, and Shirley considered a long list of songs before distilling it down to the set featured on Don’t Explain. “It was exciting to go through all the music, songs by Billie, Aretha, Etta,” says Hart. “I’ve been so influenced by them. I was raised listening to that music. My mother had a beautiful voice, and those are the songs she liked to sing.” Of the tracks recorded, some were songs Hart knew she wanted to do going in, others were ones chosen by Shirley and Bonamassa that she was less familiar with.

“It was a little unnerving at the beginning. I would have rather done all songs I knew well, but it ended up being fantastic,” Hart says. “My nervousness inspired me to find a way to live up to these wonderful songs. I was touring when I learned the material, but I’d listen to them over and over as we were traveling. I knew that to go into the studio with the level of players that would be there, including Joe, I really had to rise to the occasion. I couldn’t do my best—I had to do better. That kind of focus was good, and humbling. I wanted to make the best record ever.”

To back Hart up, Bonamassa assembled the band that was heard on his #1 Blues album The Ballad of John Henry (2009): Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Blondie Chaplin (guitar), and Carmine Rosas (bass), as well as Arlan Scheirbaum (keyboards). “The first day of recording,” recalls Hart, “I was so nervous I broke out in hives, realizing I was playing with such great musicians.” She quickly hit her stride, though, and the sound evolved into a simmering mix of soul, jazz, rock, and blues, with Hart’s vocals confidently in the pocket of each and every groove, her voice wrapping around the lyrics with grace and emotional intensity.

Throughout the preparation for and making of Don’t Explain, Hart feels she grew as an artist by virtue of listening to so many classic performances so many times, and then finding her own relationship to the songs. “For me, it couldn’t have been better timing than to do a soul-based record now, and to do it with Joe. His playing is genius,” says Hart. “It was a fantastic experience.”

“Don’t Explain” - Beth Hart - Joe Bonamassa

Following the September 26th release of Beth Hart’s “Don’t Explain” album - a soul covers collaboration with guitarist Joe Bonamassa – she’ll perform two intimate UK concerts in November. The first date will be The Flowerpot, Derby on Monday 28th November, followed by London Dingwalls on Tuesday 29th November. Tickets for both concerts are available from 0845 413 4444, www.seetickets.com, www.ticketline.com and www.alt-tickets.co.uk. Further press information for Beth’s UK concerts is available here.

Already a platinum selling solo artist across mainland Europe, Beth’s collaboration with Bonamassa on the Gil Scott-Heron classic, “I’ll Take Care Of You”, was recently BBC Radio 2’s “Record of the Week” and has since been added to the playlist; the “Don’t Explain” album also recently reached #5 on the Amazon UK pre-order chart.

Compared vocally to the likes of Janis Joplin and Etta James, Beth Hart’s November UK concerts will showcase tracks from the new album, including a brilliant rendition of Tom Wait’s “Chocolate Jesus”, as well as songs from her back catalogue such as the emotionally moving “LA Song”.

Produced by Kevin Shirley (John Hiatt, The Black Crowes, Black Country Communion), “Don't Explain” combines Hart's raspy and soulful vocals against Bonamassa's signature guitar sound. The pair collaborate on a stunning collection of hand-picked soul classics from the likes of Delaney & Bonnie, Billie Holiday, and Aretha Franklin.

Don't Explain - Beth Hart - Joe Bonamassa - New Release Review

I just received the long awaited release by Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart. Every release that Joe is doing now seems to be reaching in a different direction. He appears to be exploring the musical universe. Where earlier releases we mostly pure blues with a few ballads mixed and exploration into album oriented rock music, in and the later releases "Black Country Communion" he got a little heavier edge. In this release he has teamed up with "Star Search" Winner Beth Hart and really more showcasing her vocal talents with his guitar as a featured instrument. Where Jeff beck has staid the course with only a few vocal interludes with female vocalists, Joe has jumped in with both feet. The duo explores old blues traditional songs, a Melody Gardot ballad,a Billy Holiday number and even a Delaney Bramlett (Delaney and Bonnie) song. The recording is very well done and although not dominant like on many earlier releases, there are still some real biting guitar solos throughout the recording. Each of Joes solo releases over the past few years seems to have leaned toward more airplay and with this release he has likely got it. Every song on the cd is well done and will likely garner mass appeal. Joe deserves a broader audience and I think this well may do it.

Enjoy!
