Gettin' There - Mose Allison
Mose Allison was born in the Mississippi Delta on his grandfather’s farm near the village of Tippo. At five he discovered he could play the piano by ear and began “picking out” blues and boogie tunes he heard on the local jukebox. In high school he listened to the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, and his prime inspiration, Nat Cole of the King Cole Trio. He played trumpet in the marching and dance bands and started writing his own songs.
After a year at the University of Mississippi, he went to the Army in l946, playing in the Army Band in Colorado Springs and performing with accomplished musicians from around the country in small groups at NCO and Officer’s clubs. Returning to Ole Miss he joined the dance band as arranger, piano and trumpet player, but shortly left to form his own trio, playing piano and singing in a style influenced by Nat Cole, Louis Jordan and Erroll Garner. After a year on the road, Mose married, returned to college at Louisiana State University and graduated in 1952 with a BA in English and Philosophy.
He worked in nightclubs throughout the Southeast and West, blending the raw blues of his childhood with modern pianistic influences of John Lewis, Thelonius Monk and Al Haig. His vocal style was influenced by blues singers Percy Mayfield and Charles Brown. Arriving in New York in 1956, Mose received encouragement, work and a record date from Al Cohn. In 1957 he secured his own first recording contract with Prestige Records, recording Back Country Suite, a collection of pieces evoking the Mississippi Delta, released to unanimous critical acclaim. Mose went on to play and record with jazz greats Stan Getz, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims and Gerry Mulligan as well as with his own Mose Allison Trio.
Mose continued working with his own trio, writing and singing his own songs. His songs are a fusion of rustic blues and jazz, with profound and often humorous lyrics. As a pianist, while admiring jazz masters Bud Powell and Lenny Tristano, he also learned from composers such as Bartok, Ives, Hindemith and Ruggles. The fusing of these diverse elements into a cohesive performance continues today. A biography, One Man’s Blues: The Life and Music of Mose Allison, written by Patti Jones, was published in 1995 by Quartet Books Ltd. Of London.
Mose continues to write and perform all over the world. His songs have been covered by Van Morrison, John Mayall, The Who, The Clash, Eric Clapton, the Yardbirds, Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt to name a few. Van Morrison recorded a tribute album, Tell Me Something, The Songs of Mose Allison, on Verve Records, and rockers like Pete Townshend, Bonnie Raitt, Ray Davies and Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones have frequently cited Mose Allison as a major influence. During a recent London engagement, Time Out, the major entertainment weekly, praised Mose:
Mose Allison’s popularity in the UK dates from the ‘60s, when his mixture of Delta-born blues feel and his gift for writing a song with a sting in the tail made him a prime source of inspiration for the UK’s new generation of blues/rock artists. Not just namechecked but lionized by the likes of Pete Townshend, Jack Bruce, Brian Auger and Georgie Fame, he became British rock’s most popular jazz musician. His piano style is notable for its strange mixture of classical-influenced sophistication and blues-based intimacy, and there’s still none like him with a lyric.
His most recent Grammy nomination was for one of his two newest recordings, Mose Chronicles, Live in London, Vol. I on Blue Note Records. Mose Chronicles, Vol II was released a year later. British born director Paul Bernays produced a one hour documentary on Mose entitled, Mose Allison: Ever Since I Stole the Blues, for the BBC. Among recent releases are a dozen reissues on CD including Allison Wonderland, a double CD retrospective on Rhino, and High Jinks, a three CD package on Legacy. Blue Note has also re-released a collection of past recordings, Mose Allison, Jazz Profiles. His music has often been featured in films, and he can be seen performing in the movie, The Score, starring Robert DeNiro and Marlon Brando.
Mose resides on Long Island with his wife Audre where they raised four children: Alissa, an attorney, John, a telecommunications specialist, Janine. a psychiatrist, and Amy, a singer/songwriter based in New York.
As one writer recently said: “Mose is now at the peak of his performing career. Although maybe this last statement is not quite true as he seems to continue to improve on perfection.”

Tomorrow Night - LaVern Baker
LaVern Baker (November 11, 1929 – March 10, 1997) was an American rhythm and blues singer, who had several hit records on the pop chart in the 1950s and early 1960s. Her most successful records were "Tweedlee Dee" (1955), "Jim Dandy" (1956), and "I Cried a Tear" (1958)
She began singing in Chicago clubs such as the Club DeLisa around 1946, often billed as Little Miss Sharecropper, and first recorded under that name in 1949. She changed her name briefly to Bea Baker when recording for Okeh Records in 1951, and then became LaVern Baker when singing with Todd Rhodes and his band in 1952.
In 1953 she signed for Atlantic Records as a solo artist, her first release being "Soul on Fire". Her first hit came in early 1955, with the Latin-tempo "Tweedlee Dee" reaching #4 on the R&B chart and #14 on the national US pop charts. Georgia Gibbs scored the bigger hit with her version of "Tweedle Dee", for which Baker unsuccessfully attempted to sue her.
Baker had a succession of hits on the R&B charts over the next couple of years with her backing group The Gliders, including "Bop-Ting-A-Ling" (#3 R&B), "Play It Fair" (#2 R&B), and "Still" (#4 R&B). At the end of 1956 she had another smash hit with "Jim Dandy" (#1 R&B, #17 pop). It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[2] Further hits followed for Atlantic, including the follow-up "Jim Dandy Got Married" (#7 R&B), "I Cried a Tear" (#2 R&B, #6 pop in 1959), "I Waited Too Long" (#5 R&B, #3 pop, written by Neil Sedaka), "Saved" (#17 R&B, written by Leiber and Stoller), and "See See Rider" (#9 R&B in 1963).
In addition to singing, Baker also did some work with Ed Sullivan and Alan Freed on TV and in films, including Rock, Rock, Rock and Mr. Rock & Roll. In 1964, she recorded a Bessie Smith tribute album, before leaving Atlantic and joining Brunswick Records, where she recorded the album "Let Me Belong to You," as well as a hit duet single, "Think Twice," with Jackie Wilson.
In the late 1960s, she became seriously ill after a trip to Vietnam to entertain American soldiers. While recovering at the Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines, a friend recommended that she stay on as the entertainment director at the Marine Corps Staff NCO club there, and she remained there for 22 years.
In 1988 she returned to perform at Madison Square Garden for Atlantic Records' 40th anniversary. She then worked on the soundtracks to films such as Shag, (1989), Dick Tracy, (1990) and A Rage in Harlem (1991), which were all issued on CD.
In 1990, she made her Broadway debut replacing Ruth Brown as star of the hit musical Black and Blue. In 1991, Rhino Records released a new album Live in Hollywood recorded at the Hollywood Roosevelt Cinegrill, as well as a compilation of her greatest Atlantic hits entitled Soul on Fire. In 1992 she recorded a well-received studio album, Woke Up This Morning, for DRG Records. She continued performing after having both legs amputated from diabetes in 1994 and made her last recording, "Jump Into the Fire," for the 1995 Harry Nilsson tribute CD, For the Love of Harry on the Music Masters label.
She received the 1990 Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. In 1991, Baker became the second female solo artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, following Aretha Franklin in 1987. Her song "Jim Dandy" was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and was ranked #343 on the Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
LaVern Baker died from coronary complications in 1997, and was interred in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, New York. She originally lay in an unmarked grave, but a fundraiser was scheduled by local historians to give LaVern a headstone, and this was accomplished on May 4, 2008.

Spoonful - Willie King & The Liberators
Willie King (March 18, 1943 – March 8, 2009) was an award-winning blues guitarist and singer, known for shunning fame and playing at a local bar in Mississippi.
King was born in Prairie Point, a community in Noxubee County, Mississippi near the Alabama border. Prior to recording, he worked as a share cropper, moonshine maker and traveling salesman to name but a few of his many occupations. Later he became active with the civil rights movement, which inspired him to write socially conscious blues songs. In 1983 he founded the Rural Members Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the traditional rural skills King had grown up with, which he called 'survival skills,' and helping improve his local community. In 1997, the Rural Members Association started the annual Freedom Creek blues festival, which has since received international recognition. He began recording in 1999 and his 2000 recordings Freedom Creek and I Am The Blues, were the first of several acclaimed albums.
King performed at national and international festivals but mostly played near his home, most notably as a regular at Bettie's Juke Joint in Mississippi. He described his music as "struggling blues" because of its focus on the "injustices in life in the rural South".
King died from a heart attack shortly before his 66th birthday, near his home in the rural community of Old Memphis, Alabama, just a few miles from his birthplace.

Slow My Roll - Bart Walker Band
John Lee Hooker once said 'the blues tells a story. Every line of the blues has a meaning.' Lucky for us, talented musicians still feel the need to tell that story. And it’s even luckier for us that one of these musicians is Nashville-based up and coming blues man, Bart Walker.
Bart started honing his guitar skills at the ripe “old” age of four, while growing up in Tennessee. Along the way, he became an accomplished musician on a variety of instruments including the mandolin, banjo, dobro, bass, saxophone, fiddle and drums. His accomplishments include winning a variety of bluegrass competitions in his youth, a full scholarship from Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music to study voice in high school, being chosen as a vocalist in the Governor’s School for the Arts, as well as being selected by a Tennessee panel of judges for excellence for jazz band. After graduating high school, he was recruited into the army national guard as a musician. He attended Austin Peay State University on a full scholarship where his concentration was vocal performance and string bass majors and minors in guitar performance and composition.
After college, he moved to Memphis to pursue his dream of playing the blues. While there, his name became recognizable and he played for the likes of Ruby Wilson and Preston Shannon. He later formed a band called Five Mississippi, playing various Beale Street venues, as well as other parts of Memphis, and as far south as Tunica, Clarksdale and Oxford, Mississippi. He returned to Nashville in 2005 with a new feel for the blues, and has since contributed to many studio sessions as well as performing in a variety of clubs.
In addition to his current role as lead guitarist for B.B. King's All-Stars at B.B. King's Blues Club, and American Idol's Bo Bice, he has also chalked up countless hours in the studio with Steve Gorman (Black Crows), A.J. Croce (son of Jim Croce), Bo Bice, Audly Freed. (Cry Of Love & Black Crows), and Robert Kearns (Lynyrd Skynyrd).
In the live music world, he has played with Delbert McClinton, Steve Cropper, Lee Roy Parnell, Jim Peterik (from Ides of March and Survivor), Jimmy Hall, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon (Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble), Jack Pearson and Gary Nichols. He opened For B.B. King (With the B.B. King All-stars), Styx, REO speed wagon and Lynyrd Skynyrd (with Bo Bice). He also performed on the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman with Bo.
Bart Walker's new CD, “Who I am,” is sure to help revive the blues with the younger generation, and at the same time prove to be a much-welcomed addition for those who already possess a love for the blues.
The band includes: Bart Walker - guitar and vocals, Reese Wynans (Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) – B3 and other keyboards, Paul Ossola (G.E. Smith and the Saturday Night Live Band) – bass and Jim Thistle – drums.

CBS John-Alex Mason Scholarship Benefit Friday, December 2 at 8:00pm, Road 34 Bike Shop
88.9FM KRFC, Fort Collins Presents the inaugural John-Alex Mason Scholarship Fund Benefit. The fund has been developed by the Colorado Blues Society with the blessing of John-Alex's family to further the blues music education of young Colorado artists. We can't think of a better way for our community to honor his memory and continue the educational work John-Alex found so important.
John-Alex Mason died as a result of complications from cancer surgery. He was only 35. John-Alex Mason was one of those artists that you would look to as a keeper of the flame, as he seemed to represent his generation so beautifully. Young, aspiring and wonderfully talented, he released 6 albums in his short life. He made his name as early as 2001, when he won the Telluride Acoustic Blues Competition. He appeared in music festivals all over the country and it seemed inevitable that his time of recognition was in the near future. This sadly was not to be.

SEVERN RECORDS SIGNS THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS;
LEGENDARY AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC BAND WILL BEGIN RECORDING LABEL DEBUT SHORTLY FOR RELEASE
IN EARLY 2012
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Severn Records has announced the signing of legendary American roots music band The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and will begin recording their label debut CD shortly at Severn’s new state-of-the-art studio in Annapolis for release in early 2012.
In addition to The Fabulous Thunderbirds co-founder, singer/harmonica player Kim Wilson, the band members are the brothers Moeller – Johnny (guitar) and Jay (drums) - as well as Mike Keller (guitar) and Randy Bermudes (bass). Severn Records also released Johnny Moeller’s critically-acclaimed CD, BlooGaLoo, in 2010.
“We are thrilled to have The Fabulous Thunderbirds as part of the Severn family and to have the opportunity to give Kim and the band’s music a home,” said Severn Records president David Earl. “Their style will fit in perfectly with what we do and we are looking forward to the first studio sessions in the creation of a new Thunderbirds album.”
“I’m really excited about being a part of Severn Records,” said Kim Wilson. “We have a great rapport with David Earl and I feel at home already. The creative family atmosphere he provides is something that is very rare in any business these days.”
Founded in Austin, Texas, in 1974, the Grammy-nominated Fabulous Thunderbirds have evolved over the years from the group’s original blues sound. “We started as a straight blues band,” said Kim Wilson. We now incorporate a mixture of a lot of different styles. We’re an American music band and we’re much higher energy than we were before. To be in the T-Birds, you need to understand the different styles of music and different ways of playing it. You have to be willing to adopt a more contemporary style. The guys we have now are able to do that.”
Through consistent touring and the release of such landmark albums as Butt Rockin’,
T-Bird Rhythm, Tuff Enuff and Powerful Stuff, The Fabulous Thunderbirds garnered international stardom with the hit singles, “Tuff Enuff,” “Wrap It Up and “Look at That.”
The Fabulous Thunderbirds are managed by Skip Taylor of Two Goats Entertainment and booked in the U.S. and Canada by Bill Monot at Paradise Artists. The band has an upcoming tour of Australia in April, 2012 and will also support the release of their new Severn Records album with extensive touring in both the U.S. and Europe.

Bman's Exclusive Interview : Alastair Greene
Bman: First I want to welcome LeRoi Records artist Alastair Greene, Hi AG. I appreciate you taking the time out from your incredibly busy schedule to talk with me. I see that you have a new recording, Through The Rain" coming out in a few days. The promotional materials that I've seen indicate that it's a totally different path from what we've come to expect from your band. Can you tell me about it?
AG: Thanks Bman! Well it's not a completely different direction if someone were to go back and listen to my debut CD from 2002 ("A Little Wiser" RM001). On that CD I think I hinted at a few different directions I could go with my songwriting. I have always had a heavier side to what I play and listen to and the time felt right to put out a CD of hard rock songs. The Blues and Roots music influences are still in there but mixed in with my heavier side. I really wanted to push the boundaries of what is considered "Blues Rock" with this disc. Musically the chord progressions, vocals, and guitar playing are very much Blues influenced but with lots of added twists and turns.
Bman: That sounds really exciting. When I place the description of "Through The Rain" over your previous efforts it sounds like the makings of a great cd. Is this a new direction for your solo efforts or is it just something that you've been wanting to get out?
AG: Both. It's new in that is is mostly a Hard Rock CD. This CD started as an outlet to record some of my rock songs and it just kept growing. Originally I didn't plan on having a fully realized rock record to put out. Some of these songs were written as far back as the mid-90s and some were written last year. I started recording songs for this in 2005 and then songs from other sessions seemed to work with a 'rock' record in mind. Now that I've accumulated enough cohesive material and I'm excited to finally to put it out.
Bman: You had the luxury of growing up in a musical family with your mom playing piano and your Grandfather, the late Chico Alvarez, playing trumpet with Stan Kenton! Did you always know that you were going to be a rock musician?
AG: I think when I started playing guitar when I was 15 I hoped I'd be a professional musician, whether it be rock or blues or something else. I'd played saxophone and piano before guitar but when I started playing guitar I really connected to it and that's when the light bulb went on.
Bman: You've been touring with Alan Parsons in his APLP project. Are you going to be taking time off from that to tour to support "Through The Rain"?
AG: I certainly will be playing live shows to support this CD but will probably wait till the New Year to really crank it up. Alan doesn't tour very much so I always have a lot of different irons in the fire and time to pursue most opportunities that come my way.
Bman: How do you think working with Alan Parsons influenced your efforts on "Through The Rain"?
AG: I think any influence on this record would me more from as production standpoint and not so much from a musical one as I'd already been working on this record and writing for awhile with a specific Blues Rock sound in mind. I have done a fair amount of studio work with Alan over the last 7 years, so the AP influence was attention to detail and really taking the time to make things sound as good as possible.
Bman: I really enjoy your blues based sound. Are you going to continue to integrate your earlier materials into your "Through The Rain" tour or is it going to be something different altogether?
AG: That's a good question. There are a handful of songs on "Though The Rain" that I already play with my regular Blues band line-up. My Blues band can rock it up and also play in a traditional context. Some of the new songs won't sound out of place at all. As for the heavier rock numbers, I'm not sure at the moment.
Bman: Do you have a current "Through The Rain" tour schedule and can I release it or are you still working out the details?
AG: I don't have an official tour schedule to support the CD at the moment but if anyone wants to see where I'll be playing over the next couple of months they can hit my website. (www.agsongs.com)
Bman: Do you have any additional session work underway right now or are you free to tour?
AG: As far as session work I've been playing and singing on a series of Progressive Rock tribute projects but I'm not really sure how much I can say about them at the moment. I can say that I got to record a version of the Pink Floyd song "Money" with Alan in the studio producing. That was pretty amazing. I'm always looking for opportunities to play so the short answer to your question is, yes, I'm free to tour with my band or as part of another.
Bman: Good luck with the new "Through The Rain" recording. I really look forward to hearing it. Is there anything else that you'd like to share with your fans?
AG: Thanks! I hope the people that found out about my music through my Blues band and my last Blues CD (Walking In Circles RM005) will give this CD a listen. I won't lie, it's hard rocking, but so are a lot of other discs that fall under the Blues-Rock umbrella. As long as musicians keep the Blues alive by either playing it or pointing the way back to the founders and turning other people on to it I think it's all good. That's how it's going to survive.

Full Force presents : Slide Ruler - Sterling Koch - Review
I just received the new recording, "Slide Ruler" by Sterling Koch. I am impressed. First I have to qualify that I don't have a real love for the steel guitar except when played in traditional fashion in the manner of Buddy Cage but this recording is converting me. It is being played in the manner of a slide guitar and on traditional blues tracks. It is a very tasty recording and I bet will get the appreciation of many blues lovers. A few recordings that have been played by popular blues bands are redone here but they are not my favorites. "Slide Ruler", the title track is a great demo of what a steel guitar can do slide style.... and it leads into a great song, "If You Wanna Rock & Roll". JL Hooker's "Dimples is done very well over a Booker T rhythm beat. The recording continues over a jukin "Roosevelt Sykes "Driving Wheel". Peter Green's "Stop Messin' Round" and "I'm a Bluesman", a Koch original hold solid in the middle of the recording. The next two tracks on the recording, Otis Rush's "Double Trouble" and especially Hound Dog Taylor's "Taylor's Rock are the serious draw on this release. Kock is backed by Double Trouble (SRV) bassist Tommy Shannon and Doobie drummer Chet NcCracken. Overall this recording is really great! You won't be finding this one on Ebay!
Get one quick! (By the way...the fidelity of the recording adds a lot vs the video shown below!)

The Things That I Used To Do - LITTLE FREDDIE KING
Little Freddie King (born Fread Eugene Martin, July 19, 1940, McComb, Mississippi) is an American Delta blues guitarist. His style was based on Freddie King, although his own approach to country blues is original
The cousin of Lightnin' Hopkins, King learned guitar from his father, but in 1954 moved to New Orleans at the age of 14. He played in many juke joints with his friends Babe Stovall, Slim Harpo, and Champion Jack Dupree, playing both acoustic and electric guitar.
He recorded an electric blues album with Harmonica Williams in 1969. In 1976, King undertook a European tour alongside Bo Diddley and John Lee Hooker.[5] His next recording opportunity came some twenty seven years after his first in 1996, with the release of Swamp Boogie. King's Sing Sang Sung (2000) was recorded live at the Dream Palace in Faubourg Marigny.
King played the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for 32 consecutive years. He is a member of the Music Maker Relief Foundation Inc.
King's most recent album, Gotta Walk With Da King was released in 2010.
