I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

New Release - One Hand Man's Band - Review

I stumbled across this band a few days ago when I was surfing the net.I had the chance to download this for free and when I heard it I immediately posted the download link for all of my friends (that's you). I think that this cd is absolutely terrific! I really don't know what it's about. I just know that I love every song on this download and find it to be a lot like the real primitive blues that I love so well. There are 9 tracks on the free download and if you didn't get your copy when I blogged it a few days ago... here's the link again. But just in case, there is a video and free samples here to check out. This guy is on to something.... One Hand... THIS IS GREAT!!!!

Make Signals - Guadalupe Plata

Ubeda, Spain. June 2006. Two young swamp blues worshippers - Pedro de Dios Barcelo and Carlos Jimena - perform a chemical experiment by mixing the rusty-water-wheel chant of Hound Dog Taylor, the darkness of Skip James, the hypnotic rhythm of John Lee Hooker and R.L.Burnside, the madness of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the sweet sound of Tampa Red, the killer slide of Elmore James and the essence of Son House.

The combustion was immediate, but the flames soared completely out of control when Paco Luis Martos, the world grand Master of hand-carved coffered ceilings, appeared in the laboratory accompanied by a primitive bass, handmade with a zinc washtub, a wooden stick and a chainsaw string.

Rising up out of this fire, a diabolically addictive substance shaped by a snake-like, raw and dirty blues, zombie-love lyrics and an original and electrifying performance was born - GUADALUPE PLATA.

"Brilliant blues and a washtub bass, how much more authentic do you want it be? As a Spanish act, we may not get the chance to see too much of Guadalupe Plata but if you like the old fashioned blues played by modern acts, this band should be on your list".

No Hay fFores En El Campo - Lolo Ortega

New Release: Bailout - Guitar Not So Slim - Review

I just received a new recording by Guitar Not So Slim called Bailout. If you're not familiar with this band it may because they are from Spain, but they definitely know their blues music. The release opens with Bailout, a Chicago style blues with harp blazing. The second track, Adaveing is a Texas style instrumental with cool guitar riffs, horns, keys and harp soloing (possibly my favorite on the release). The third track, Never Be Younger, has a distinct early 60's sound with plenty of instrumental to keep us gear head happy. The fourth track, Thank You Sir is a funky blues track. Again an appropriate amount of instrumental without being an overtly instrumental recording. The fifth track again has a distinctive vintage 50's - 60's sound over piano. The 6th track, I Wanna, stays the line with the balance of the cd. It's solid blues with harp, rhythm and vocals. Track 7, What's It Gonna Take has a distinctive blues swing. It's a pretty strong song with a decent length instrumental interlude as well. I particularly like the guitar solo on this song. Track 8, What's It Gonna Take, is a duo part harmony blues tune with stylistic harp soloing. The 9th track, You Call It Lazy has a Rhumba beat as is sometimes used in the swing blues. GNSS executes it like they were born in Chicago. The final primarily instrumental track, La Pequena Nur, has the funky beat of an early Curtis Mayfield tune.

Overall this release is very entertaining and I'm glad that I got the chance to hear it. Check it out if you get the chance!

Automatic - The Blu-Tones

"The Blu-Tones" is a project that began in late 2010 in Madrid after the idea of JD (U.S. guitar and vocals) to raise awareness about all those classics of blues and blues-rock and English-speaking Americans to central capital of Spain.

It is really important to have all these artists from the early history of the blues to this day have written important pages in the history of music.
In this way you can hear songs from Albert King, Eric Clapton, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Robben Ford & The Blue Line, Steve Ray Vaughan, The Allman Brothers, etc

What You Gonna Do - Mama Paula & The Kasper Jensen Blues Band

Mama Paula has had a long career that has seen her performing in countless venues, including the Royal Albert Hall with Mark Knofler, Van Morrison, and Joe Cocker to name but a few.

She has now teamed up with the young talent, Kasper Jensen, to create what she considers to be the ultimate Blues Band.

Mama Paula & The Kasper Jensen Blues Band are currently active in booking concerts across the European Continent and the United Kingdom, where they will be showcasing their original material, as well as their take on a few hidden gems.

TEXAS LOVE - LOS GUMBO Blues Band

LOS GUMBO Blues Band, born in november 2008 in Gran Canaria Island (Spain), get their name from the most popular Louisiana dish and that's what they are: a creole mix of all old and modern influences that you may find in Blues Music....

David Philips - Update

NEW RECORD
The new record made it to #11 on the July / August airplay chart of the Collectif des Radio Blues; a society representing all blues radio shows in the French speaking countries.

Here is some of the feedback that came in the last few days:

Jean Louis Poirier / Radio Beton (France): Excellent musician

Marylou Busch / Concertzender (Holland): Prachtig, beetje Kelly Joe Phelps-like

Hans Schiffer / Schiffers FM (Holland): Well recorded, intimate en perfectly fitting for a Sunday

Something Else Review (USA): A Chris Smither from the other side of the pond, Philips keeps it straightforward simple, making The Rooftop Recordings a simple pleasure.

THE GOOD MUSIC FOX: David Philips is a sweet troubadour and solitary singer-songwriter

The Rooftop Recordings - David Philips - New release review

I just completed a few listens of the new David Philips recording. The recording is focused and quiet. Grab a cup of coffee, a news paper and enjoy a quiet day.

David Philips lives in a roof top apartment at the top of a block of flats in Barcelona, Spain. When it came time to record these songs, he decided to record at home. He set up a few mics in the room that leads on to the same roof terrace where he likes to write his music.

The songs are stripped down to the bare bones, just voice, a guitar (be it regular 6 string Acoustic, 3 string Cigar Box Guitar, 4 string Ukulele or Lap style Dobro), a little harmonica now and then and maybe some foot stomping. No overdubs, just live, one take and if you listen carefully you'll hear in the background a soundscape created by the people and creatures David shares his environment with, just like any other day up there on the roof.

Tracklisting
1. Help Me To Forget
2. You Didn’t Make Me
3. Our Own Hands
4. Raised In The North
5. What Am I ?
6. Kind Stranger
7. South East Breeze
8. Tied Up, Gagged And Bound
9. Stones Throw
10. Mountain To Climb
11. When I’m Drunk
12. Kind Stranger (reprise)

Total playing time 42:04

The official release date is September 9, 2011.
