It Ain't Easy - Corey Lueck and the Smoke Wagon Blues Band - New Release Review
I just received the new release, It Ain't Easy, from Corey Lueck and the Smoke Wagon Blues Band. This is a real entertaining recording. Opening with Devil Got My Woman, a rock boogie, Lueck sets the tone for a carefree blues romp. Mike Stubbs on guitar and Gord Aeichele on sax play some memorable licks. On Hold On To You, the approach is more R&B with Lueck highlighted on vocal and harp. Very cool. Josephine has a swampy, funky sound with slide guitar and Jesse O'brien on keys sounding amazingly like Bill Payne. Hen House Hopping is a laid back country blues with a clever storyline. The guitar and slide work on this track is cool as well. Down Hearted Blues takes a more head first dive into the Texas style blues and Stubbs in leading the way surrounded by horns. Lueck has a solid voice and this track gives him a chance to sing. Scott Pritchard plays a cool key solo that is followed by Stubbs again on guitar. Lueck plays a masterful harp solo on this track and Aeichele has his sax singing. Great track. That Voodoo sets a cool swampy sound sonically and creates a scene not unlike Walk on Gilded Splinters by Johnny Jenkins... another great track. Additional vocals by Robin Banks create a nice contrast. Damaged Time is a nice ballad that really should see quite a bit of airplay. Fine Furred Mama takes the Chicago route with a swingin' beat, cool extended harp solo and again sax work to keep it hot. Ain't No Use is a bluesy ballad which is alos likely to hit the airwaves. Strongly written and executed it's got all of the components necessary to grab some attention. Where Did I Go Wrong another blues ballad with Robin Banks taking the lead on vocals and Aeichele contributing some great saw lines. Some Other Fool finds Lueck back at the vocal lead and this R&B style track shows his natural talent for singing in this style. I really like this track and again Aeichele plays some soulful sax. The release is capped by Drink By The Sink which has the Roolin and Tumblin rhythm track. I really like the distorted vocals, harp work and resonator on this track. Although not the raw style of blues I typically gravitate to, this is quite a good CD end to end.

A Friend In The Blues - Danny Marks - New Release Review
I just received a copy of Danny Marks' newest release, A Friend In The Blues. Marks, a multi instrumentalist, is joines by Alec Fraiser (bass and vocal), Al Cross (drums), Jonathan Goldsmith (piano) and B3), Sherrie Marshall (vocal) and Wayne Mills (sax). Marks penned all 12 tracks on this release opening with Caretaker, a modern R&B based blues with a light jazzy bottom. Marks trades guitar riffs with Mills on Sax. Blues For Lonnie Johnson a shuffle style track has some cool Texas style riffs. Blues Party Tonight is a swing style track with a heavy horn bass and a Latin rhythm. Uncle John is an acoustic based finger picked blues ballad. Back To The Blues, is a ballad style track with the tale of the blues business and an interesting guitar hook. Two Brothers takes a more rural feel with a western flare. A Friend In The Blues has a very light, happy touch, almost a jingle. The Other Side stays in what I'd consider a more traditional western style in a rhythmic ballad. That Lonesome Valley takes an even further step into the country with a spiritual bent... think Porter Wagonner. Mixed Up Girl is another track that looks at the blues from a rural view adding slide and an uptempo beat. The recording concludes with Maybe Tomorrow, a quiet ballad accompanied with primarily acoustic guitar and slide.

Time To Say Goodbye - Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers
Gary Farmer is a solid blues musician with a great band backing him up (The Troublemakers). He recently released a new album, entitled Under the Water Tower, and hit the road for a tour of the US with 21 dates in New Mexico, California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska
Farmer, Cayuga/Haudenosaunee/Iroquois Confederacy, is from the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario.
The band’s blues influences are John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Freddie King while also playing the contemporary blues of Keb Mo, Dr. John, Taj Mahal and Robben Ford.
Farmer was one of the driving forces behind the launch of the Aboriginal Voices Radio Network and appeared in Dead Man alongside Johnny Depp and Ghost Dog staring Forest Whitaker, among other films.

Unshakeable - The 24th Street Wailers - New Release Review
I just got a copy of Unshakeable, the new 24th Street Wailers CD and they continue to grow as a band. Lindsay Beaver, lead singer and drummer for the band, Mike Archer on bass, Emily Burgess on guitar and Jon Wong on sax. The release opens with Home Cookin' and I have to say that Wong's horn work is impressive. I notice that the band has gone for a vintage sound with Beaver's vocals sounding like they are through a vintage ribbon mic throughout the recording. Love Triangle features guitarists Carter Chaplin and Marc Doucet along with the band adding an extended guitar exploration. Trouble shows solid writing and increasingly interesting instrumental contributions from the band. On What Can You Give Me Now, Burgess shows her chops with some super guitar riffs. I'm Not Free is actually a really interesting ballad and in my opinion the strongest track on the release. Another strong track is Jack, Jim Johnny and Me is a cool jump blues that is sure to get the listener moving. This CD shows significant growth over the Wailers first Cd and is certain to win them a larger audience.

Big Red - Soul Stack- New Release Review
This debut recording, Big Red by Soulstack is really interesting. It mixes rock soul, gospel and blues to come up with what is a very good release. Soulstack is formed from what is left of a popular Toronto blues band, Wikens-Knight, featuring Jonathan Knight on vocal and guitar, Tom Bona on vocal and drums, Mark Wessenger on vocals and keys and Josh Knight on vocals and bass. In My Time Of Dying doesn't very as much from the center as Led Zep but it is a absolutely terrific track. It is performed with real authenticity. Desperate Times has a really warm feel to it and has a great back beat with clean slide guitar texture. This band sounds like they're from Florida or Atlanta...not Ontario. Skinny Girl is definitely one of the outstanding tracks on the release. It has a bit of the Taj Mahal island feel mixed with the southern funk. Just a great track. In Your Mind gets that Little Feat feel and even has a heapin' helpin' of funky slide. The vocal mixtures on this track as well as others is really great. Just A Natural Thing, keeping the funky/soul beat going does have a brief break where there is a straightforward blues guitar break. River Of Love has the spiritual/soul sound and is really a great sound for this lineup. These guys seem to have found their spot. Holy Roller again has some great vocal harmonies as well as cool guitar riffs. Let Me Be Your Fool shows great vocal harmonies played over primarily an acoustic resonator guitar. This solitude breaks into a full out jam at the end. Miss Me is one final soul style song to wrap up the recording. Vocal harmonies and instrumentation is really integrating throughout this entire recording. I believe that it will find a strong audience not only with vocal oriented and radio audiences but also with listeners with more instrumental tastes.
Great job!

Blues In D Natural / Queen Bee - Sue Foley
Sue Foley (born March 29, 1968, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian blues singer and guitarist.
Foley has been writing and playing professionally since 1984. She has recorded ten albums, for both Antone's Records and Shanachie Records. She has spent over fourteen years on the road as a bandleader, lead vocalist, guitarist and manager of her own band. In addition to her own touring, she has also shared the stage with blues musicians, such as Back Alley John, B. B. King, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. Her initial career began in Ottawa, Canada, at the age of sixteen where, in addition to solo work, she sang with the Back Alley John Revue.
Foley sent a demo tape of herself to Clifford Antone's label (Antone's Records) in 1990. Impressed, the record label arranged an audition for the guitarist. She moved to Austin, Texas and soon signed a recording contract with Antone's.

Black Snake Blues - Jeff Martin
Jeffrey Scott Martin (born October 2, 1969 in Windsor, Ontario) is a Canadian guitarist and singer-songwriter best known for fronting the rock band The Tea Party. Martin began his career as a solo artist in October 2005, when The Tea Party disbanded.
Forming The Tea Party in 1990 after a marathon jam session at the Cherry Beach Rehearsal Studios in Toronto, Martin (a self-confessed "control freak") produced all of The Tea Party's albums, including their eponymous debut album in 1991, distributing it through the band's own label, Eternal Discs. In 1993 The Tea Party signed to EMI Music Canada and released their first major label recording entitled Splendor Solis. Martin employed open tunings to imitate Indian instruments such as the sitar, something he has continued to employ throughout his career. Further developing The Tea Party's sound in 1995, The Edges of Twilight was recorded with an array of Indian and Middle-eastern instrumentation while Martin drew lyrical inspiration from occult themes and pagan influenced literature.
Upon returning from successful tours in Canada, Europe and Australia in 1996, The Tea Party went onto record Alhambra, an Enhanced CD which features acoustic re-recordings of songs from The Edges of Twilight, followed by a brief tour around Canada known as "Alhambra acoustic and eclectic". Transmission, released in 1997, saw Martin's first foray into electronica, with Martin conceding that Transmission was "an honest attempt at going somewhere poetically where most people would be unnerved to go. It was very dark, extremely angry and you could only listen to it in a certain mindset. I mean for me, going to where I went with Transmission, almost destroyed me." Triptych followed in 1999; the first single "Heaven Coming Down" rose to #1 on Canadian radio. Lyrically, Martin was less enigmatic than he was on previous albums: on Triptych he wrote about the experiences of his years in the band. After releasing Tangents, a singles compilation, in 2000 and Illuminations, a DVD compilation of music videos which Martin remixed in Surround sound, The Tea Party released The Interzone Mantras in 2001 and Seven Circles in 2004. In October 2005, The Tea Party disbanded due to creative differences.
The band members regrouped in 2011 for a series of shows in their native Canada.

As the Years Go Passing By - Marshall Lawrence
Marshall Lawrence (born 1956) is a Canadian acid blues musician. Lawrence is often referred to as the "Doctor of the Blues.
Lawrence became interested in rock and roll at age 10 and asked his father for a guitar. Lawrence enjoyed his Echo semi-acoustic guitar and was determined to learn how to play it, inspired by Jimi Hendrix.
Lawrence played his first gig in 1969 at Windsor, Ontario, under a band named The Peanut Gallery, playing a 1969 Gibson SG through a Fender Dual Showman blew an amp on "Johnny B. Goode." As a teen, he spent most of 1970s and 1980s exploring guitar rock styles, while he was employed at a car factory in Windsor. Later on in his life, Lawrence moved east to Kingston to pursue a Ph.D in psychology.
Lawrence mixes many styles of blues to his music. Henceforth, he is given the nickname "The Doctor of Blues." His music can be described as a fierce, energetic blend of blues, rock, soul, and funk. Together he calls it "acid blues." Another way to describe his technique is a tribute to traditional blues, but mixed with an energetic style.

Havce You Ever Been Mistreated - Chris Antonik Band
After thrilling audiences in Toronto blues clubs as a sideman, Antonik has stepped out on his own to deliver this self-produced collection of original material and two classic blues covers.
..The album “Chris Antonik” is a portrait of a maturing blues guitarist and songwriter who fully grasps the importance of song over solo - while still leaving plenty for guitar fans to enjoy. The songs deal with repairing relationships and giving back to those around you, as well as classic blues themes delivered in modern vehicles. Using the guitarist–as–front man approach and a variety of guest vocalists, the record is a solid collection of soulful, strong and smart blues. Guest performers include some of Chris’ friends from the Canadian blues scene, including Mark Stafford, Suzie Vinnick and Richard Underhill... ..The primary vocalist and keyboardist on the record is the gritty and stirring Josh Williams of the jam band Fat Cats. Bassist Andrew Taylor (The Blazers) and drummer Chris Chiarelli provide the tight and funky rhythm section... ..From the jump, “More to Give” gets the record moving with a kinetic, Hammond-soaked groove. The track is about learning from the mistakes of the past, having more to offer to the ones you love, and is filled with blues-rock guitar momentum that pays respect to early 70’s Clapton... ..The album swiftly moves into the stripped-down blues funk of “Roll with It,” where Antonik channels his slide guitar heroes. A vintage dobro provides a country-blues contrast to the deep pulse of an urban, almost hip-hop-like drum beat - a contrast that mimics the song’s theme of just going with what comes our way... ..“The King of Infidelity,” a narrative about the consequences of unfaithfulness, marries melodic song-craft with blues-slinger inclinations. With its blues-pop sensibility, Infidelity pays homage to late 80’s adult contemporary blues albums, such as Clapton’s “Journeyman” and Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “In Step,” as well as the recent “Continuum” from John Mayer. Maple Blues award-winning artist Suzie Vinnick provides rich and alluring back-up vocals to shadow Josh Williams’ ardent lead vocals and retro Rhodes piano... ..Veteran blues harmonica player and singer Mark “bird” Stafford then jumps in on “If We Start from Here,” an upbeat, no-nonsense call for reparation delivered as a double-shuffle blues number... ..The record peaks with a cover of Jerry Ragovoy’s “She’s a Burglar,” popularized in 1974 by guitarist Freddie King. Antonik pays tribute to his hero, with King-inspired guitar playing complemented by some of the most sought-after horn players in the business: Juno-award winner Richard Underhill, Perry White (the Shuffle Demons) and William Sperandei (Colin James)... ..A cover of Otis Rush’s minor key classic “Double Trouble” features Chris making his lead-vocal debut (pointing to future growth in this area for the evolving guitarist). Trouble also features in-demand Toronto musician Geoff Daye (Sue Foley, Danny Marks) on Hammond organ and piano... ..The album was produced by Antonik, recorded at Audiolab Recording Company in Toronto, and mixed and mastered at Silverbirch Productions in Toronto... ..In October 2010, Chris was nominated for a 2010 Maple Blues Award in the “Best New Artist” category on the strength of the debut album. The Maple Blues Awards recognize achievement in blues music in Canada... ..Upon its release, the album “Chris Antonik” debuted on the Roots Music Report international blues radio play charts at #35. It was also one of two independent albums in the top 50. This charting was the result of significant airplay in Canada, the US and worldwide on blues radio stations/shows. In addition, for the week of September 24, 2010, the album was ranked #4 for Canadian roots music radio play (Roots Music Report)...

This is an opportunity to support real music. In a time where so much has gone to the digital world, we're playing real grooves through tube-amps and Hammond organs to keep everything right in the music world. We've been playing blues, rock'n'roll, and swing for over a decade. Though we're slowly moving up the food chain, we can't do it without a little help... your help.
We're looking to raise $5,000 to cover the costs of manufacturing and shipping of promo CD's to radio, television, venues, and blues societies that will help us create a buzz about this wicked project. It's not cheap to get the CD into the hands of each contact, but it's important! They are the people that make it possible for us to continue writing, recording, and playing live music... and we like making music, to entertaining good folks like you!
The best part about Indie GoGo is that no pledge goes unrewarded! On the right hand side of the screen you will notice a list of "perks" that we will offer in return for pledging your support.

New Release: Tim Bastmeyer - Self Titled - Review
I just got the chance to review the new self titled release by Tim Bastmeyer. The release is quite interesting composed of 10 original tracks and one track, "Goin' Down, penned by Don Nix. The release features Juno award winning Julian Fauth on piano as well as James Thompson on bass, Cory Richardson on drums and of course Bastmeyer on Guitar and vocals.
Bastmeyer uses his vocal delivery style, somewhat like Lou Reed, delivering poetic stories as tasty guitar and piano interludes dust through the mix over top of well thought out rhythm.
Bastmeyer will head out on tour of Canada and several US markets in 2012 to support this new release.

Southside Shuffle - The 24th Street Wailers Band
On the surface, they may appear to be fresh-faced college kids – but don’t let that, or the title of their recent release, Dirty Little Young’uns fool you. The 24th Street Wailers are a group of experienced, driven and academically trained musicians full of piss and vinegar with energy to spare.
Known for their funky, danceable and often hilarious live performances the band has played most of the joints in their home town of Toronto: Grossman’s, the Silver Dollar Room, the Rex, Hugh’s Room and assorted pubs and bars. In 2010, after only one year together as a band, The 24th Street Wailers made waves in the tight-knit blues community by winning the Toronto Blues Society talent search, and performing at festivals such as The South Side Shuffle, The Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival, The Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival, the Toronto Blues Society’s 25th anniversary party.
The 2011 release of their first full-length CD Dirty Little Young’uns brought them to more prestigious festival stages including the Frankford Island Blues festival, Lighthouse Blues Festival, Summerfolk Festival , and the Dutch Mason Blues Festival. Most notably, however is that The 24th Street Wailers were the only English band to be a part of and win both prizes of the Festiblues International du Montreal and Prize of the Bourse Air Transat /Blues Sur Seine, the prize being a coveted headline spot at the Blues-Sur-Seine Festival in France in 2011. Shortly after its release, Dirty Little Young’uns debuted at number three in Canada and number eight over all on the Roots Music Report, was number 16 on the DAWG FM top twenty charts where it stayed for several months and was the featured “Blues Breaker of the Week” on Dan Aykroyd’s House of Blues Radio Hour.
Driven by Halifax born lead singer and powerhouse drummer Lindsay Beaver, whose tough exterior is matched by even tougher drumming and original innuendo filled lyrics, the quartet features Beaver’s husband Mike Archer on bass, songwriter Emily Burgess, who writes half of the material, on guitar and Jon Wong on saxophone. Their music is innovative; Dirty Little Young’uns is 13 tracks comprised of original material from each member — a record that begins with a raunchy shuffle in the title track, and ends with a stunning emotional and soulful acoustic song, “Turn To You”.
Living together in a little house on 24th Street in Etobicoke, near where they all met while pursuing bachelor degrees in music, the 24th Street Wailers are a band in every sense of the word – a team who eat, sleep and breathe for their craft. They are friends first – a trait that is obvious during their live performances as they appear to be having as much, if not more fun playing together as the audience has while watching and listening to them.
