New Joanne Shaw Taylor Live Album, "Songs From The Road," 2-Disc CD/DVD Set for Release on November 12 from Ruf Records

 JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR
THE NEW LIVE ALBUM: SONGS FROM THE ROAD

2-Disc CD/DVD Set

U.S. Release Date on Ruf Records:
November 12, 2013

ATLANTA, GA - One night. One shot. No safety net. If there was pressure afoot as Joanne Shaw Taylor walked onstage at The Borderline club in the U.K. on May 12th, 2013, then the bandleader used it as rocket-fuel, channeling the vibe into the set of her life. Now, that explosive performance is captured on Songs From The Road: a live album with the soul power to jostle the greats off the podium, coming November 12 on Ruf Records.

“I’m really pleased with it,” says Joanne. “It’s everything I wanted it to be.”

As the latest release in Ruf Records’ acclaimed Songs From The Road series, this CD/DVD set is the live album her fans have been screaming for. “The timing is good,” agrees Joanne. “My fans, and especially the blues fans, have been asking me for a live album for a while now. I’m glad that we waited, and didn’t do it two years ago, because hopefully I’ve improved. We’ve done three studio albums now, so I think the live album ties all the albums together.”

A seasoned road-warrior since 2009’s debut album, White Sugar, Joanne has nothing to fear from the stage, but the demands of her diary meant Songs From The Road presented a logistical challenge. “We only had one chance to do it because of my schedule,” she reflects. “If I’d have played terribly – which fortunately I don’t think I did – it would have been unusable. It worked out really well, and I think a big part of that is because the fans were so good.

“We wanted to do it in London,” Joanne continues, “and the reason for picking The Borderline was because I wanted something small and intimate. I grew up being inspired by those small Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert Collins club gigs, and I wanted to have that same ‘everyone-packed-in-like-sardines’ vibe – as opposed to a big production and losing some of that intimacy.”

If the crowd brought the atmosphere, then Joanne brought the songs. While some bands merely sleepwalk through the hits live, Songs From The Road finds the bandleader pulling her back catalogue around by the hair, ensuring that from early favorites like Going Home to current roof-raisers like Soul Station, these songs are very different beasts to the studio originals.

“I think there’s a very different energy live: that’s probably the main thing,” she notes. “I’m a live guitar player. There’s definitely more guitar in my live show than on any of the albums. I tend to lose all sense of control once I get onstage and everything is twenty beats faster than it’s meant to be! And there were no overdubs, so what you hear is what you get.”

Sold out venues. Screaming crowds. Her name in lights. Joanne Shaw Taylor never anticipated any of that at the start. Back then, she was just an ordinary “black country” schoolgirl, bored with the disposable pop she heard on the radio growing up in her native Birmingham, England, rifling through her father’s record collection for sunken treasure, and falling for albums by SRV, Albert Collins and Jimi Hendrix.
“Guitars were lying around the house,”recalls Joanne.  At 13, she’d picked up her first electric and practiced every minute.

At 14, she defied her teachers to play at the legendary Marquee and Ronnie Scott’s clubs in London, and began to overcome insecurity about her voice. “I never set out to be a singer,” she modestly told Classic Rock. “I’ve always had a deep voice. I think it came from my influences as a kid. When I was singing to records, I was listening to Albert Collins and Freddie King. When I was a teenager, I became a big rock fan: Glenn Hughes, Skin, Doug Pinnick. I wouldn’t get far on The X Factor.”

Joanne left school at 16 and ran straight into her big break, as a twist of fate directed her demo into the hands of Eurythmics icon Dave Stewart after a charity gig.

Reflecting on his first impressions, Stewart recalls that “she made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.” His call the following day proved the start of a lasting friendship, with Joanne seeking his advice on the industry and even accompanying his DUP supergroup across Europe in 2002.

Stewart gave Joanne her first deal, but when the label ran into financial trouble, it gave her a chance to regroup and work on her songwriting. Until then, original material had perhaps been a neglected side of her talent.

“I never really wrote songs until I was 21.” Suddenly the dam broke. In 2008, Ruf won the rush for Joanne’s signature, and soon she was working with veteran producer Jim Gaines (Carlos Santana, Johnny Lang, SRV), bassist Dave Smith and drummer Steve Potts on the songs that became her debut album, White Sugar.

We recorded it in this little backwater town in Tennessee,” she recalls, “and if we needed a break, we’d walk to the shop and buy root beer.”

When White Sugar dropped the following year, taking in gems like “Bones” and “Kiss The Ground Goodbye,” it turned out the press had a sweet tooth, with Classic Rock crowning it Blues Album Of The Month and Guitarist noting “she plays with more attitude and flair than most – massive potential here.”

Soon enough, the buzz was building, with Joanne both raising her profile supporting Black Country Communion, and honing her craft on 2010’s Diamonds In The Dirt. This second album was another step up, from the explosive lead breaks on “Can’t Keep Living Like This” to the heavier influence of her adopted Detroit hometown on the crunching country-blues of “Dead And Gone.” Not bad, considering she had written the material in just two days and recorded it in less than a fortnight: “It’s the dreaded second album curse. You have ten years to do the first one, and ten days to do the second!”

By then, she was unstoppable, with Diamonds In The Dirt proving not only a classic record, but also a skeleton key to every door in the industry. Having received a nomination for “Best New Artist Debut” at the auspicious British Blues Awards for White Sugar, Joanne scooped consecutive wins in the “Best British Female Vocalist” bracket at both the 2010/2011 events: a haul that cements her position, as Blues Matters put it, as “the new face of the blues.”

Since then, it’s gone stratospheric, with Joanne breaking into the notoriously hard-to-crack U.S. market, beating the stereotypes of her age and gender, and being watched by 17 million viewers as she played an angel-winged solo during Annie Lennox’s set at Queen Elizabeth’s 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert. That same summer gave us Almost Always Never: a bar-raising third album that found Joanne dodging expectations, writing the songs her muse dictated, and diving in at the deep end with just her talent to keep her afloat.

Recorded in Austin, Texas, those 12 cuts on Almost Always Never moved from the savage Les Paul solos of “Soul Station” and the strutting hooks of “Standing To Fall,” to the failed relationship achingly depicted on “You Should Stay, I Should Go” and the title track’s refrain of “You crash, you burn/you live, you learn.” She’d never sounded more open and honest. “I’ve loved every album I’ve made for many different reasons,” reflects Joanne. “But I’m so proud of these songs. It’s the perfect and truest example of who I am as an artist to date.”

Maybe so, but if you only know Joanne Shaw Taylor as the songwriter and studio magician, then it’s time you heard Songs From The Road. Released in November, 2013 on Ruf Records, it’s a candid snapshot from the road that makes your front room feel like the front row. “That night was just really good fun,” she reflects. “And I think that translates on the album.”

Ruf Records artist: Joanne Shaw Taylor - Almost Always Never - New Release Review

I just received Almost Always Never, the newest release from Joanne Shaw Taylor. This recording, to be released on September 12, 2012, shows a different side of Taylor but one that will appeal to a large number of listeners. Soul Station, the opening track, has a dance beat and JST's meaty vocals but the guitar work is along the lines of a Jeff Beck track with more reckless abandon while under total control in JST's able hands. Beautifully Broken and You Should Stay, I Should Go are both quick paced radio oriented tracks with hot guitar riffs bringing up the rear. Piece Of The Sky is a cool neo soul style track putting me in mind of the earliest Macy Gray recordings (which I really like). There is a really hot guitar solo on this track adding to the overall impact. Frankie Miller's Jealousy is the only track not written by JST on the recording. This is really a blues ballad executed to a tee by JST with a solid but understated vocal bed of blues laid down in from of an explosive frenzy of guitar work. Excellent! Tied and Bound is a straight up rocker with a heavy bottom. JTS grinds out more solid guitar work on this track well complimenting her vocal lead. Standing To Fall is another track that pushes the envelope almost into pure shredding and the heavy side of rock. JST handles the task effortlessly. Maybe Tomorrow opens with a very light touch and a jazzy rhythm pattern but after just a short time, JTS opens the doors and the guitar fills the room. This recording gives JST the opportunity to really explore progressive soloing while keeping the basic track relatively simple. The final track, Lose Myself To Loving You, is a very slick blues ballad that could easily hit it big on airplay.
JST is backed by David Garza (keys and mandolin), Billy White (Bass and slide) and JJ Johnson (drums).

Joanne Shaw Taylor's new album "Almost Always Never"?

"ALMOST ALWAYS NEVER"

THE NEW ALBUM RELEASED SEPTEMBER 17th

Following her acclaimed performance alongside Annie Lennox at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert in June, blues rock sensation Joanne Shaw Taylor will release a brand new studio album Almost Always Never on Monday September 17th

Released by Ruf Records, Almost Always Never is Joanne’s third studio album, it coincides with a 13-date nationwide tour of the UK, which kicks-off on October 11th at the Bristol Tunnels.

Born and raised in the Black Country, Joanne was ‘discovered’ by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart as a 16 year old guitar prodigy. Through hard work and near-constant touring, she is now one of the hottest young names in British Blues. The UK tour will see her performing new tracks from Almost Always Never, alongside crowd favorites taken from her two previous albums - White Sugar (2009) and Diamonds in the Dirt (2010).

In both 2010 and 2011, Joanne was voted “Best British Female Vocalist” at the British Blues Awards. Her new album is produced by the legendary Mike McCarthy (Spoon, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Patty Griffin) in Austin, Texas.

"Mike McCarthy comes from a very different musical background from me,” says Joanne. “He pushed me out of my comfort zone, while allowing me to explore and embrace new territories whilst remaining true to who I am. I never thought when I started on this journey I would ever get to work with such an amazing array of musicians. I've been a fan of JJ, David and Billy for many years and their performances on this album are exceptional.”

The album features David Garza (keyboards), Billy White (bass, guitar) and J.J. Johnson (drums). Previously, Garza has worked with the likes of Fiona Apple, Juliana Hatfield, and Blues Traveler. White has played with the Heartless Bastards and Craig Finn, and J.J. Johnson has drummed with John Mayer.

"I've loved every album and recording experience I've had to date for many different reasons,” reflects Joanne. "I think what sets Almost Always Never apart from my two previous albums is the songwriting process leading up to it. I'm so proud of these songs. All 12 of them combine into one body of work. It’s the perfect and truest example of who I am as an artist to date."

"I've made an album where I'm starting to hold my own on the guitar. I spent a lot of time leading up to these recordings going back and exploring old influences as well as embracing some new things. I had the opportunity to write the songs I've always wanted to write with an all-star cast to support and nurture them but also to push me and this album to places I would not have been capable of reaching without them."

"The UK is where I feel the most pressure to perform at my best because the audience is so close to my heart. I can't wait to perform the new album in the UK. Although I've toured there for 13 years, with this new album of songs, I feel it will be as if it will be first time they actually see me live."

Ruf Records artist: Meena - Try Me - New Release Review

I have been listening to the newest release, Try Me, by Meena. The recording contains 9 original tracks as well as a few classics and Meena is backed by Dave Smith on bass, Steve Potts on drums, Rick Steff on keys, and Chris Fillmore on guitar. First up is the title track, James Brown's classic Try Me. Meena is backed on vocals by Vickie Atkins, Sandy Carroll and Amyee Bragg who give it a genuine soul flavor. Guest artist Joanne Shaw Taylor plays a beautiful melodic solo staying in character with the tune. Send Me A Doctor is a rock track with Eric Sardinas contributing some cool slide guitar flare. Put Your Hands Out Of My Pocket is a solid soul fused blues track showing Meena's vocal range and giving Chris Fillmore a chance to play some pretty tasty guitar riffs. This Song Is For You would work nicely on the airwaves with a classic hook and memorable tune. Again Fillmore plays some tasty guitar riffs topping up an already strong entry. Meena belts out an enriched version of I'd Rather Go Blind and Fillmore again plays a tasty guitar solo. On Let Your Sweet Love Shine On Me, Meena picks the tempo with a Zydeco rhythm. I Shoot You Down again features Eric Sardinas on slide guitar and he gives it a pretty good workout. The final track, Just As I Am, is the best track on the recording featuring Shakura S'Aida as a contrast to Meena and Coco Montoya really spices up the track with his red hot guitar soloing.

Following her critically acclaimed UK tour in November 2011, due to popular demand, blues rock guitarist and singer, Joanne Shaw Taylor returns to the UK to undertake a 13-date tour, kicking off at Bristol Tunnels Club on Thursday October 11th.

The tour dovetails the highly anticipated release of Joanne’s third studio album "Almost Always Never" – released by Ruf Records on Monday September 17th, 2012.

Originally discovered by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart as a guitar prodigy at the age of 16,
Joanne will perform music from her new album, as well as dipping into songs from her first two critically acclaimed albums - White Sugar (2009) and Diamonds in the Dirt (2010).

For two years consecutively, 2010 and 2011, Joanne was voted "Best British Female Vocalist of the Year" at the British Blues Awards. Joanne is fast becoming a major force on the international blues rock music circuit.

Hailed by Classic Rock magazine, Joanne also received a Best New Artist Debut nomination at the British Blues Awards for her debut album White Sugar.

The new album was produced by legendary record producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon, ... And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Patty Griffin) in Austin.

"Mike McCarthy comes from a very different musical background from me," says Joanne. "He pushed me out of my comfort zone, while allowing me to explore and embrace new territories whilst remaining true to who I am. I never thought when I started on this journey I would ever get to work with such an amazing array of musicians. "I've loved every album and recording experience I've had to date for many different reasons," reflects Joanne.

I had the opportunity to write the songs I've always wanted to write with an all-star cast to support and nurture them but also to push me and this album to places I would not have been capable of reaching without them.

"The UK is where I feel the most pressure to perform at my best because the audience is so close to my heart. I can't wait to perform the new album in the UK. Although I've toured there for 13 years, with this new album of songs, I feel it will be as if it will be first time they actually see me live."

Rude Mood - Joanne Shaw Taylor

In the past two years, Joanne Shaw Taylor has gone from a promising young blues talent to a bona fide force on the international music scene. She took home Best Female Vocalist honors at the 2010 British Blues Awards, has supported tours by Joe Bonamassa and Eric Sardinas and impressed legions of fans in the US, Europe and Australia with her high-energy attack.
Hailing from the British Midlands, Taylor was discovered at age 16 by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, who recruited her to play guitar in his side-project D.U.P. Tours with Stewart and fellow band members Jimmy Cliff, Candy Dulfer and Mudbone Cooper provided a first taste of the international stage. Taylor then spent several years developing her craft as a guitarist and, in particular, as a singer and writer of original material. She signed to Ruf Records in 2008 and recorded her debut, White Sugar, with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines - a direct link to two of her greatest guitar heroes, Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The album became the best-selling artist debut in the history of Ruf Records and garnered a nomination as Best New Artist Debut at the 2010 Blues Music Awards.
Following 18 months of intense touring activity, including a stint on the 2009 Blues Caravan Tour, Taylor returned to Gaines' studio outside of Memphis in 2010 to record her follow-up disc, Diamonds in the Dirt. Reuniting her with veteran session players Steve Potts and Dave Smith, Diamonds reflects a somewhat heavier sound, which Taylor attributes to her new musical environment: Increasingly in demand at clubs and festivals throughout North America, Taylor recently set up a new home base in Detroit, Michigan. "Detroit had an influence on the album and added to the vibe," she says. "There's a huge amount of incredible bands and musicians in this city and it's been incredible to be exposed to them."
Still just 25, Taylor has already taken the first few hurdles on the way to a long and successful career. Just ask Joe Bonamassa, arguably the most influential young artist on the current blues circuit. "There are a lot of great guitarists and singers in the blues today. What I see in Joanne Shaw Taylor that sets her apart from the rest is the ability to write a great song. Not only is she a killer guitarist and singer, but find yourself walking away from her shows singing her songs as well.
