I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Stony Plain Records artist: HOROJO Trio - Set The Record - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Set The Record, from HOROJO Trio and I really like it. Opening with rocker, Man of Steel, lead vocalist Jeff Rogers who also plays keys leads the way, with well known guitar slinger JW-Jones on guitar and Jaime Holmes doing a great job on drums really get it ramped up. R&B track, Set The Record Straight has a lightly funky rhythm and the real richness of Rogers vocals shine through. Jones, who lead the vocal charge on his own solo releases and Holmes do a terrific job blending backing vocals making this a tight vocal effort.  One of my favorite tracks on the release is Stay Crazy with it's soulful feel and terrific lead vocals. With it's radio melody and Jones tasty guitar riffs, this track is very nice. Another particularly strong track is The Night with has a terrific melody, strong lead vocal by Rogers who adds warm organ backing and includes a sweet guitar solo by Jones. Very nice. Contemporary blues rocker, Give and Take gives Jones a real chance to show his blues roots with excellent riffs highlighting the track. Holmes takes charge on "James Brown" like rhythm as Jones and Rogers trade vocal/guitar lead on Something You Should Know. This track really moves out and Jones slides right in with a crisp guitar solo that really capps the track and Holmes showboats a little himself adding real icing to this cake.  Real Deal begins as a high intensity rocker with HOROJO firing on high but slows to a really nice blues giving Jones a great opportunity to show his blues chops and that he does. Rogers is just what Jones needed to give him a wider audience with excellent pipes on this new release.

Outside The Box - Mike Nagoda - New Release - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (January 14, 2022) Outside the Box, from Mike Nagoda and it's an interesting blues rocker. Toronto based, Nagoda, was born with Cerebal Palsy and identifies as a queer, disabled blues and roots musician. Having a difficult time mastering guitar in a conventional fasion, Nagoda approached Toronto bluesman Brian Cober who developed the art of double slide where a slide is worn on two separate fingers creating an unusual effect. Opening with shuffle track, He's My Man, Nagoda wastes no time in displaying his sexuality, which was quite common with early blues although primarily heterosexual in nature. Joined by Liam Ward on harmonica, Nagoda showcases his double slide techniques. Pretty cool. With a slinky, kinda funky bottom, courtesy of D'Arcy Cain on bass, Jeremy Ronson on drums, Here To Stay has a rocky feel with Nagoda on guitar, vocal and Hammond. Slow, 8 bar track, Busker's Blues, features a nice guitar solo by Michael Keith, a solid piano solo by Anthony D'Allessandro, and some real nice harmonica by Liam Ward. O, Maximus is an interesting blues rocker with an adventurous instrumental extension featuring nice solos by Nagoda and Ward. Very nice. I think my favorite track on the release is "Pixies like" title track, Outside the Box, with it's alternating time signatures, vocal attack and rowdy guitar work by Frank Cosentino, Nelson Sobrel and Nagoda. Latin influenced, Conquistador, features cool percussion work by Chris Birkett with Ronson, Rex Ruber on alto sax, D'Allessandro on piano and a hot guitar solos by Robb Cappelletto and Nagoda. Wrapping the release is We Got A Party (Further On Up The Road), a loose blues rocking jam. D'Allesandro lays in another nice piano solo and Nagoda rips another solo of his own making this a solid closer for the release.

Another Planet Music LTD. artist: Mississippi MacDonald - Do Right, Say Right - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Do Right, Say Right, from Mississippi MacDonald and  I really like it. Opening with easy shuffle, I Was Wrong, Mississippi MacDonald is firing on all cylinders with a great soulful voice and fat, BB King like guitar phrasing, joined by Phil Dearing on keys, Elliot Boughen on bass and Mark Johnson-Brown on drums. One of my favorite tracks on the release is funky blues, It Can't Hurt Me with it's Albert King influenced guitar riffs and MacDonalds solid vocals. Organ and horn accents throughout buy Dearing really punch up the track and aggressive bass lead by Boughen adds real bottom. Check out the tasty guitar lead on Drinker's Blues. MacDonals's fat bends and double stop accents really sets this track with strong backing vocals by Lucy Dearing. Slow Blues, If You Want A Good Cup Of Coffee is another of my favorite tracks on the release. MacDonald has a really solid voice, no taking away from that but when he knuckles down on guitar, he can really play. His trem bends and phrasing are really juicy and pinched harmonics accent nicely over the keyboard bed set by Dearing. Excellent! Keep Your Hands Out Of My Pocket is a particularly hot track with MacDonald showing that his influences are broad. With hints of T-Bone Walker, BB King, Albert King, and SRV to name only a few, MacDonald has you sitting back just riding the wave. Very nice. Wrapping the release is Your Wife Is Cheating On Us, a clever shuffle with traditional BB King formatting. With "horn" punch and keyboard backing, MacDonald uses this track as his vocal showcase and it's bound to be a crowd pleaser. His guitar riffs are stinging and his sensitivity it spot on. This is a really strong track to close a really strong release.

Hunnia Records artist: Little G Weevil - Live Acoustic Session - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live Acoustic Set, from Little G Weevil, and I really like it. From the intro on original track, Keep Going, you can tell that Little G Weevil's newest release is going to be good. Totally acoustic and alone, Weevil shows a respect and love for the original delta style blues.  Another Weevil composition, Real Men Don't Dance, shows a lot of similarities to Hill Country blues style with very simple guitar riffs and call and response between his acoustic guitar and his own lead vocal. Very nice. On R L Burnside's Early In The Morning, Weevil rides tight on a traditional blues riff and wails the blues from his gut. With thumped strings and percussive raps on the guitar body, Weevil shows all the prowess of a delta blues man. Fluid lead runs and a great story line characterize Sasha Said, a straight up Chicago style blues track. Morganfield flavored, Apple Picker, is deep. Weevil really drills down on the guitar lead, accents and double stops before breaking cadence with some really nice fluid soloing and delivers the lead vocal in traditional style. Excellent! I really like the drone note bottom on On My Way to Memphis, with quick fillers supporting the vocal melody. Weevil of course takes a few bars to set the melody off and flesh out the tune. On closing Weevil takes the song very quiet, then exploding, showing just how much emotion one can put into a track with only acoustic guitar and voice. Very nicely done. Slow blues, She Used To Call Me Sugar, is an excellent example of strong blues guitar soloing on acoustic guitar and wailing blues vocals. I've always loved this style which I would call Hooker style with it's mix of changes in time, hammer ons and tight little soloing riffs. Really nice. Wrapping the release is John Lee Hooker's Roll And Boogie. Hooker was known for a lot of things but nobody charged a boogie like he did. Weevil dives into it head first with his driving guitar rhythm and stomping foot, pushing his grinding vocal attack, grunts, groans and fanning attack on the guitar. Excellent closer for a really strong release.

Shakey Trill - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the newest self titled release, Shakey Trill and it's an interesting mix of raw blues and folk music by Mike MacDonald and Tyler Pantlin. Opening with I Love That Woman, MacDonald on lead vocal sets a great fingerpicking lead and Pantlin lays in solid harmonica accents. Lighthouse is a terrific original blues by MacDonald really showcasing MacDonald on slide resonator and Pantlin on harmonica. Very nice. On Morganfield's classic, I Can't be Satisfied, Pantlin has the lead on vocal and MacDonald really works the slide plus the addition of Alec Fraser on bass. Excellent! Lonely is another really solid delta style blues track with balanced contributions between Pantlin and MacDonald on harmonica and guitar. This is a particularly nice showcase for Pantlin's blues styling and MacDonald's vocals are rock solid. Guitar boogie track, Hold On To It has great pace and bound to get you nodding your head. I really like MacDonald's vocals on this track and Pantlin's harmonica work really works nicely. Wrapping the release is Sailing, a bluesy rocker with a contemporary feel. With MacDonald on lead vocal and guitar and a healthy harmonica response from Pantlin, the duo maintains a blues format in a rock delivery. This is a solid release with some great tunes.

Chocolate Fireguard Music Ltd. artist: Pat Fulgoni -Dark Side of The Blues - Live In Prague - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dark Side of the Blues, Pat Fulgoni Live In Prague and it's a smoking cover of some of the top blues tracks that you know. Opening with Sonny Boy Williamson's classic, Help Me, Fulgoni on vocal gets this band rolling with Jan Martinek, Lukas Martinek and Richard Mader exchanging guitar riffs over the keys of Boris Secky and Jan Korinek, Brian Regan, Mick Reed, Vladimir Grunt on drums, and Leos Drabek, Robert Mader and Jason Riley on bass. On soulful, Hard Times, Fulgoni really turns on the heat and his guitar arsenal is right there with him creating a steamy, Ray Charles like feel and featuring Jim Corry on sax. Very nice. BB King's hit, the Thrill Is Gone gets a bouncy rework but without losing it's blues intensity. A real nice showcase for Fulgoni's vocals, the track actually seems to strut rhythmically as it rolls and the guitar intensity is tight. John Lee Hooker's boogie, Think Twice Before You Go sets a nice groove and Fulgoni's vocals are full and clipped giving it a bit of old blues, authentic feel. Good jam. Larry Davis' Texas Flood gets a pretty honest SRV cover by Fulgoni band with some real nice SRV style blues rock guitar riffs...sit back. Wrapping the release is a cover Robert Johnson's Crossroads, using pretty much of Cream's arrangement from the 60's. A great blues rocker and driving guitar anthem, this is a solid closer for a live concert release.

Broke Fuse - Rocket Ride - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Rocket Ride, by Broke Fuse, and it's a solid blues rocker. Opening with  The Stephenson Swamp Stomp, Jay Moonah, the man behind Broke Fuse, lays down some cool blues harp work, backed only by tambourine, setting the pace for the release. Title track, Rocket Ride, is a driving blues rocker with a great bass/drum rhythm, keyboards and lead vocal, all by Moonah and nicely blended female backing vocal by Debbie Fleming and featuring Mike McKenna on slide guitar. Very cool. Shuffle, One Shot, has a bit of blues and a bit of rock with piano by Eric Lambier and vocal, harmonica, drums, organ and bass by Moonah. A definite radio track candidate. Stingray Blues has a slow easy pace with guitar and drum rhythm. Moonah's vocals are understated but his harp playing sails. Very cool. Pop rocker, Miss Me When I'm Gone, has a really lively beat and is another top radio style track with it's solid melody and rhythm. Strong lead vocals and harmonica work by Moonah highlight the track. Instrumental, Los Detalles Del Diablo, is a cool track with a firm Latin beat with Moonah playing harmonica melody over tight guitar riffs. Wrapping the release is The Ballad of Sonny Shade with Moonah and Matthew Bartram, Paul Butters and Neil Bennett on vocal, Bartram on organ, and Moonah on guitar, harmonica, drums and bass. Slipping is a few nice guitar solos are 1st Butters and then Alex Matthews. Cool closer.

Humu Records artist: Jarkka Rissanen & Sons of the Desert - Cargo - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Cargo, from Jarkka Rissanen & Sons of the Desert, and I think it's just the right kind of cool! Opening with Tomcat, a laid back R&B based track with Latin and Blues/Jazz influences, it just cruises like an early WAR record. With Jarkka Rissanen and Markus Vaisanen on guitars, Ilpo Komulainen on bass and Esa karki on drums and percussion, this is a solid opener. Title track, Cargo, is a real nice instrumental ballad featuring Rissanen on lead and baritone guitar melody. Although this track doesn't have the signature guitar riffs nor does it even attempt Jeff Beck's phenominal fretwork, I that Beck would gravitate to this sound. I know that I do. Excellent! Pow-Wow has a modernized Delta sound and a dash of hill country percussion with Rissanen on slide guitar and Vaisanen soloing on electric guitar over a firm bass line by Komulainen and sweet tom tom work by Karki. Very cool. Roll Call is another high strung rocker with artistic guitar work. With it's driving beat by Karki and Komulanian and great guitar interplay by Rissanen and Vaisanen, this music is good for your head. Wrapping the release is Once Upon A Time, an aeiry, Troweresque style composition with nicely flowing guitar melody, not in the form of rapid fire notes, but with blues feel and phrasing. Very nice closer for a solid new release.

Stony Plain Records artist: Maria Muldaur with Tuba Skinny - Let's Get Happy Together - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Let's Get Happy Together, from Maria Muldaur and Tuba Skinny and it's captures the sound of the 20's and 30's. Opening with I Like You Best of All, Muldaur on vocal and Shaye Cohn on wild cornet, Todd Burdick on the anchor ... tuba, Barnabus Jones on super trombone, Jason Lawrence on 6 string banjo, Craig Flory with a great clarinet solo, Greg Sherman on guitar, Max Bien Kahn on guitar and Rubin Rupuzzi on washboard. I really like the clarinet / cornet play off each other. It sets the stage nicely and Jones is a strong trombone player so his work with Muldaur's vocals are classic. Taking the pace down quite a bit on Delta Bound, Flory and Jones again really work the track and Burdick's tuba work is terrific under Muldaur's vocals. I Go For That has great pace and excellent instrumental weaving that is so important in this period music as well as all Dixieland music. Very nice. One of Muldaur's showpiece vocals on the release is Big City Blues, originally performed by 30's star Annette Henshaw. Wrapping the release is Road of Stone, a special track to Muldaur who says it was recorded by Sweet Pea Spivey, sister of Victoria Spivey who discovered her. With trumpet lead and cool clarinet wailing, cornet and trombone soloing, this is a perfect closer for a cool release.

Lucky Bear Records artist: Rob Lutes - Come Around - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Come Around, from Rob Lutes and I really like it. Opening with Knives, an easy folk rocker, singer/songwriter/guitar player, Rob Lutes sounds a bit like a modern day JJ Cale. With his country rock approach, the addition of dobro by Rob MacDonald, Solon McDade on bass, Bob Stagg on keys, and Mario Telaro on drums this is a cool opener. Lightning is another great track with Dylan like presentation and Band like orchestration. Very nice. Traditional track, In My Time of Dyin' has a cool lumbering blues (Maybe Mark Knopfler) feel and Lutes free flowing vocals really carry the track nicely over minimal guitar, drum and keys and with a chunky guitar lead. Very cool. Well saturated reverb on Amsterdam gives this primarily folk track a special feel. Lutes captures the essence of the moment and places it in time. Very nice. Wrapping the release is Away, a really nice acoustic instrumental between Lutes and MacDonald. The subtle blending of the two lead guitar phrasing is magical. A nice closer for a real nice release.

Black Hen Music artist: Kat Danser - One Eye Open - New Release Review

 


I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, One Eye Open, from Kat Dancer and it's cool. Opening with shuffle, Way I Like It Done, Dancer is upfront on lead vocal and guitar, with Steve Dawson on guitar and some hot pedal steel,  Gary Craig on drums, Jeremy Holmes on bass, Dominic Conway on tenor sax, Jerry Cook on bari sax, Malcolm Aiken on trumpet, and Kevin McKendree really working the piano. Strong opener. With it's drone bass line, Lonely And The Dragon is one of my favorites on the release with bluesy vocals, some really tasty blues guitar soloing and solid horn backing. Another hot track is New Orleans flavored, Frenchman Street Shake. Craig's tight drum rhythm, with Dansen's vocal timing, solid horn work and excellent slide work by Dawson gives this track real traction. Another favorite on the release is One Eye Closed with it's driving rhythm and punky rock attack. Wrapping the release is Mi Corazon, a Tex-Mex number featuring Danser on ballad style lead (in Spanish) and with warm horn work and solid pedal steel. Solid closer for a cool release.

Gravely James - From Steve's Shed - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, From Steve's Shed, by Gravely James and it's an upbeat folk blues release. Opening with 103, James shows a lot of energy on vocal and acoustic guitar with foot stomps and spoon like percussion featuring Gravely James (Chris Madronich) on vocal and guitar. Well structured ballad, Atlantis on My Lips has a radio friendly melody and a quiet approach making it my selection for radio play. With it's driving guitar rhythm and excited vocals, Farewell Anita is likely to be a strong crowd favorite in live performances with a memorable melody, hootin' and hollerin'. Shoot 'em Down has the classic lines of a traditional folk song with a super melody and straight forward accompaniment. With it's winsome whistling, Cold Stone Heart is a peppy little track with snappy guitar riffs and some of James' best vocals on the release. Wrapping the release is Beers with Joe Lapinski, a vibrant and energetic track with a cool contrast between the vocal and guitar. Cool closer for a cool release.

Steve Hill - Desert Trip - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Desert Trip, from Steve Hill, and it's an interesting blend of folk, rock and blues. Opening with Evening Star, a chant like blues track with a thumping drum beat and fleet fingered acoustic guitar work is a strong opener for one of Canada's most prolific guitar players. Rain is a real cool track with super vocals, a progressive melody and solid guitar accompaniment. Cold Hearts reminds me quite a bit of a Frank Black composition (Pixies) with it's solid melody, strong pace and tight package. Very nice. Another strong composition is I Won't, a simple acoustic and vocal ballad. Hill has a great way of blending a cool tune with interesting rhythm and just the right amount of finger work. Very nice. With it's firm foot stomp driving rhythm and guitar driven melody, Hill does some of his best vocal work on Make Believe. The track shows how simple guitar execution can be so tasty. Judgement Day has a cool blues/western sound with some of the components of an old western theme. I love the lower neck amplified guitar work as well as the built up dynamics under the blues/rock guitar soloing on this track. Excellent. Wrapping the release is super instrumental, Tail Lights, with Hill dancing nicely across the electric strings creating one really nice closer for a solid set of music.

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Come To My World, by Luca Burgalassi, and it's a laid back Eric Clapton/JJ Cale style look at the blues. Opening with My Loving Babe, Burgalassi sings and accompanies himself on guitar and dobro, drums and harmonica. A cool, modern stroke at the blues with a dash of country gives this track a familiar feel. Solid opener. A lightly salted jazz track, All My Blues, has a snappy rhythm section of bass and drums under Luca's flight fretwork and lush vocals. Haunting, Notte is one of my favorite tracks on the release featuring Valentina Sorbera on piano and Holly Kirsten on strings. Ballad, Song In The Distance is a solid radio track with a rich melody and Luca accompanying himself primarily on guitar. Very nice. With a Muddy Waters like dobro slide riffs, and Rob Oliver on harmonica, The Real Me is a cool, updated blues track. Country swinger/gypsy swinger, Tidewater Attitude has traces of Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks or Squirrel Nut Zippers. It's energy and featured playing by Luca, Michael glass on vocal and guitar, Bobby Black Hat on vocal and harp, Valentina Sorbera on vocal, Holly Kirsten on vocal and violin, Rob Oliver on vocal and guitar and Pamela Jo Ward on dooo dooo makes for a lot of fun. Wrapping the release is Home, an instrumental ballad featuring Luca on vocal, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, accordion, bass and percussion. This is a cool release with a lot of texture.

Little Pig Records artist: Cousin Harley - Let's Go - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Let's Go, from Cousin Harley and it's a blast. Billed as Canada's premier hillbilly rockers, Cousin Harley opens with Right Back With The Blues, a country stepper. Paul Pigat on lead vocal and guitar, Jesse Cahill on drums and Keith Picot on bass make this track sound like it was recorded in the USA circa 1956 and I love it. Pigat's vocals are strong and chesty and his guitar playing a solid tele finger picking workout. Excellent! Jumping right on the throttle with heavy driving drums by Cahill, Let's Go has a heavy bass line that is almost metal like but the result of this track is nothing short of pure rock n' roll with berry like guitar riffs. Excellent! I'm a sucker for surf tunes and El Swarto's Big Adventure is a great instrumental with fat shimmery chords and a Latin beat. Great! Cool rag style jazz track, Dancing For Bobo is a cool country flavored jazz tune which could be straight from a Chet Atkins or Danny Gatton release with plenty of snap and strong fluid guitar lead work. Very nice. Another cool rocker with a dash of surf is Who's That Lyin' with traces to Son House and an infectious rhythm. This is not only a terrific track, it also is my choice for radio track on the release! Excellent! Bluesy rocker, Gone, Gone, Gone has a dark, Blind Willie McTell feel and another terrific entry. Pigat's vocals are nicely surrounded by the heat and sweat of a gritty hotel room and his guitar riffs are tight and meaningful. Very nice! Wrapping the release is Merle The Gypsy, sounding like Atkins meets Django. With fluid finger picking and an accelerated beat, this is a terrific closer for one of the best releases I've heard in a long time.

Josh Piche' - Self Titled - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent self titled release from Josh Piche' and it's a cool set. Opening with Starry Eyes, a solid rocker with plenty of radio appeal, Josh Piche' is up front on guitar and lead vocal backed by Eddy Ruyter on keys, Steve Pelletier on bass and Don Pham on drums. Piche's vocals are really cool and his guitar attach sophisticated. Another track with solid radio appeal is Spend My Time with the addition of steel guitar work by Mitch Lewis. With it's softer approach, December Birds has a folky acoustic feel with light instrumentation and warm backing vocals. Wrapping the release is reggae flavored, Fools In Love with tight drum rhythms, mellow lap steel by Lewis and the addition of Anthony Brancati on keys and Mike Ferfolia on vocal.

Endrick and the Sandwiches - Green Room Rumble - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Green Room Rumble, from Endrick and the Sandwiches and it's a lot of fun. Opening with Junior Parker's Mystery Train, Montreal's own Endrick and The Sandwich has their blues groove on. Endrick Tremblay on lead vocal, harmonica, piano, and guitar leads the way, backed by Greg McEvoy on guitar, Simon Ebber on bass, and Mandella Coupal Dalgleish on drums. Willie Dixon's slow blues, Choo Choo has really nice feel with solid vocals and giving Tremblay a little space to show his guitar chops. Very cool. Trouble In Mind, made popular by Chippie Hill is sung as a quiet duet featuring Tremblay and Rene Lauziere and hitting the spot nicely. Slim Harpo's Scratch My Back is up next and is a cool ramble. Tremblay on harp and guitar captures the funky blues feel and backing vocals balance it nicely. Original track, Devil Does is my favorite track on the release with Endrick on lead vocal and guitar and a feel that blends the Hill Country sound with contemporary stripped down blues. Very nice. Wrapping the release is another Dixon track, You Can't Judge A Book By Looking At The Cover, with a distinctly early British invasion sound. This is a solid blues rocker and strong closer.
