Ric Lee's Natural Born Swingers

Lee was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and was a founding member of his first band, The Falcons. He was also a drummer for Ricky Storm and The Mansfields, which he was persuaded to leave in August 1965. Soon he took over drumming duties for The Jaybirds, with guitarist Alvin Lee, and bassist Leo Lyons. In 1966 they arrived in London, where a keyboardist, Chick Churchill also joined the band. In 1968, the band auditioned at the Marquee Club in London under the name The Blues Yard, but quickly became the successful outfit, Ten Years After. With this group, Lee played at rock festivals including Woodstock in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival on 29 August 1970. When Ten Years After disbanded in 1976, Lee formed March Music/Fast Western Productions undertaking music publishing, management and record production and signed acts such as the Incredible Kidda Band. In 1994, Lee formed The Breakers with an old friend, Ian Ellis (ex-Clouds) and together they wrote and produced their first studio album "MILAN", which was released in July 1995. Along with tours of the UK and Europe, The Breakers were guests with Bryan Adams and Bonnie Raitt, on NBC Super Channel's "Talking Blues" programme that aired in Europe in March 1996. In 2011, Lee formed the 'Ric Lee Blues Project' which was later renamed 'Ric Lee's Natural Born Swingers' for their 2012 album release 'Put a Record On'. The band featured Bob Hall of Savoy Brown, Danny Handley from The Animals and British session bassist Scott Whitley who has worked with many major acts from around the world. The album received substantial airplay on European and internet radio. He is married, has two children and lives in the Derbyshire Dales.

Love So Cold - Ian Parker and Friends

Ian Parker (born Ian James Parker, 13 December 1976, Birmingham, England) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. Born in Birmingham, he was brought up in near-by Stourbridge. Inspired by The Beatles, he began playing guitar at the age of 8. His interest in music flourished during his teenage years and following the completion of a BSc degree in Psychology at the University of Derby, his musical career began. In his early teens he began to focus heavily on electric guitar after hearing the music of Jimi Hendrix and Cream. From here Parker became passionately interested the blues, studying the music and its history at every opportunity. In 2003 he recorded his debut album, Inside for the German blues label Ruf Records. He went on to release a further three albums and two live DVDs through the company. In addition to his interest in the blues, Parker has always considered himself to be a singer-songwriter. His influences are far-ranging and his music has largely revolved around a balance between his song-writing and his blues guitar playing. His most recent recording, a five track EP called Demons and Doubters released through Equator Music, marked a subtle change in direction away from blues-rock towards a more mainstream guitar-lead singer-songwriter identity.

Blind Alley - Marcus Bonfanti Band

From the first note of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” sixteen-year-old Marcus Bonfanti knew he wanted to be a guitar player. After spending his youth as a trumpet player in brass bands, working 12 hours a day in a kitchen to buy his first guitar, dropping out of a prestigious Music College and touring the world with different artists for almost 10 years Bonfanti has become the sum of all the great music he was exposed to as a young boy growing up in North London. His 2008 debut album, ‘Hard Times,’ set the scene and sent some subtly effective messages about a new British voice demanding to be heard. 2010’s ‘What Good Am I To You’ (Listed in Classic Rock Magazine’s top 50 albums of 2010 & Single "Give Me Your Cash" top 40 songs of 2010) made good on all those promises. The critical acclaim that both albums received earned him the 2012 British Blues Award for Best Songwriter. He was also invited by Paul Jones to perform at his 25th Year anniversary show at BBC Maida Vale Studios and as special guest at his legendary Cranleigh Arts Centre Christmas gig. After 2 sold out shows at London’s prestigious Jazz Café this year, he has been chosen as the support act for the legendary Shuggie Otis for his first ever UK shows. 2013 will see the release of his much-anticipated 3rd studio album. Recorded at ‘The Grange’ with Dave Williams (Ike and Tina Turner, John Mayall, Peter Green) it will be released in the spring. Bonfanti is known for his high-energy live shows with his 3-piece band that have been receiving rave reviews over the last 2 years and solidified his reputation as one of the most exciting live performers on the UK scene. Marcus will be traveling the UK to promote this new album through a set of intimate solo gigs throughout February 2013 and then embarking on a UK & European tour with his band in April and May to coincide with the release.

Ball and Chain - Kyla Brox Band

Kyla's voice remains a stunning example of the soul singer's art: turning up the heat by degrees, lulling and charming before unleashing emotional catharsis, and blurring the distinction between pleasure and pain like the soul greats of old. Whether fronting the mighty Kyla Brox Band, or harnessing undiluted soul power in a duo with musical and life partner Danny Blomeley, Kyla Brox is without doubt the most authentic UK blues and soul singer of her generation. Born in Lancashire in 1980, she was exposed to the passion of Afro-American music at first-hand from her blues singing father, Victor. She traces her interest in singing from age three, partly from a desire to be closer to her charismatic but distant dad. She was the late product of the marriage between Victor (Caiaphas in the original cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar) and Annette (the 'maid by the fire' in the same), and, unlike her elder sisters, gifted but non-professional singers, she didn't spend her formative years in the back of a touring van under a cloud of cannabis smoke. Kyla joined the family business in 1992, singing with Victor onstage at Band On The Wall at the age of 12, and performing with his regular touring group shortly afterwards. The core of the Kyla Brox Band go back to this remarkable unit, nominally the Victor Brox Blues Train, but known as 'the child slavery band' for the extreme youth of the players. As well as Kyla (13, but could pass for 21), it contained bassist Danny Blomeley (13, but could pass for eight), and drummer Phil Considine (19), both Kyla Brox Band mainstays. A two month stay at Victor's house in France at the age of 16 was a period of growth and development. Then, in 2000, she accompanied her father on an extensive tour of Australia. Blomeley had left the Blues Train to travel the world, and, to ease the blow, he promised to find Victor some dates in Australia. Kyla, just turned 20, found herself singing risque blues songs to hard men in mining camps in remote parts of the outback. This was the trip that transformed the novice singer into a seasoned soul belle. Back in Manchester in 2001, Kyla and Danny formed a duo, occasionally augmented by old members of the child slavery band: the Kyla Brox Band was born! They plied their trade in Victor's old stomping grounds in North West pubs and clubs, before a career-making performance at Colne Blues Festival in 2002 sealed Kyla's reputation as the first lady of the British blues. The line of development can be traced through Kyla's six albums. From the 2003 debut Window, where the tone is summery and romantic, to the acoustic Grey Sky Blue (2009), where hopes and longings are freighted with deeper emotions, via the blues/soul calling card Beware (2003), the band triumph Coming Home (2004) and the more introspective Gone (2007). The songs have developed too: the team of Brox/Blomeley have grown into a potent songwriting force, writing in the blues/soul idiom with an individual, nicely personal touch. In an age of conveyer belt pop stars and emote-by-rote singers, Kyla Brox is the real deal.

Life On The Line - Alex McKown, Simon Peat and the Detroit Breakdown

Alex McKown was born in 1996 and he first picked up the guitar when he was 6 years of age. When he was 8 he asked if he could have an electric guitar for Christmas. Alex quickly progressed and spent many hours playing along to guitar legends such as Eric Clapton and BB King. When Alex was 11 he started to have lessons from Samuel C Lees at Tameside Music Academy. A passion for the blues was ignited ! Alex developed his performance skills by performing regularly at the blues/rock jam at The Whittles in Oldham. "The Moon and Sixpence" in Glossop gave The Alex McKown Band their first gig in 2008. The band went down a storm and the local paper carried the headline "Guitar Prodigy is Star of the Future". When the next gig was announced the headine was "Brilliant Blues not to be Missed". Alex then started to listen to the artists appearing at the major blues festivals in the UK and met Hamilton Loomis from Texas over the internet. Hamilton kindly agreed to let Alex sit in on his UK tour in 2009 and this helped to raise his profile. In 2009 Alex performed with his own band at The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival in Colne, Newark Blues Festival and Ramsbottom Blues Festival. In 2010 Alex opened the British Stage at Colne followed by further appearances for Boogaloo Blues and Newark Blues Festival. In 2011 Alex performed two shows at the Zinc Blues Festival in France and also appeared for the second time at the Colne Festival on the British Stage. The highlight of 2011 was a nomination in the British Blues Awards and inclusion in the Best Newcomer Poll by Blues Matters Magazine. Another nomination in the 2013 British Blues Awards and a stellar line up of festival and headline gigs are scheduled.

Blues In B Minor - The Paul Rose Band

Paul Rose is without doubt one of the most unique and talented guitarists in the world today. Fundamentally a rock guitarist, his extraordinary playing style touches on blues, country, jazz and folk, blended together into a style that is entirely his own. Never a gig goes by where audience members don't comment that Paul is the best guitarist they've seen and heard. Born in Newcastle, north east England in July 1966, Paul's natural gift shone through at an early age. He was already being hailed as one of the best guitarists in the region by the age of 16, playing regularly on the Newcastle live scene with the most popular local bands of the day. Since then Paul has continued to go from strength to strength, having released a total of 12 solo albums to date, selling worldwide to an ever increasing circle of fans. Coupled with his stunning live shows built on 25 years of tough performing experience, Paul is now gaining the worldwide recognition he deserves. Paul has been noticed along the way by some pretty high profile guitar movers and shakers, with Rory Gallagher calling Paul a "Hot Player" and Seymour Duncan naming Paul in his top 5 players (that was 2nd between Jeff Beck 1st & Roy Buchanan as 3rd). As well as many of the major guitar mags writing rave articles about Pauls playing, both in album and concert reviews. with quotes Recognised as an electric guitarist, Paul has recently been playing many solo gigs with nothing but an acoustic guitar and a sample pedal to promote his first ever acoustic CD "The Learning Curve." These gigs have been very well received indeed, with one reviewer writing "this is a truly world class guitarist at the very top of his game." This is not to say Paul has totally turned his back on the Fender guitars he loves so well, in fact quite the contrary. Paul's 12th and new album Double Life was recorded at the Steakhouse in Hollywood, CA, which is owned in part by Steve Lukather, and has been used by many guitar orientated artists such as Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen etc. The musicians met for the first time on day one of rehearsals, and the album was rehearsed, recorded and mixed from start to finish in 15 days. With this, Paul is now breaking into the German market, having played several highly successful tours there, with upcoming interviews and features with several important music magazines and websites. He is fully endorsed by LsL guitars, Steinberg,IKmultimedia, GHS strings and the legendary pickup maker Seymour Duncan. With a 13th album currently in production, Paul is facing a future just as spectacular as his musical gift. Handle On The Blues - Nick Woodland

London-born Nick Woodlandis one of the veterans coming out of the British blues-rock scene. Inspired by those like Alexis Korner, Eric Clapton, John Mayall and Peter Green, Woodland started out on guitar at age 15 and was almost to become a member of the Rolling Stones in the sixties. Since those days, he stuck to the message of rhythm’n’blues gaining some fame among insiders as one of the hottest live-acts around. “If you dig Dave Edmunds, Ry Cooder or Stevie Ray Vaughan, you will get your money’s worth from Nick Woodland,” Germany’s leading musicians’ magazine read. Süddeutsche Zeitung, one of Germany’s biggest dailies, wrote: “Nick Woodland is among the best live performers of the white blues.” Based in Munich (Germany), Nick Woodland has played his guitar for a whole lot of different bands in rock (Amon Düül II, The Clash), pop (Donna Summer, Boney M) and jazz (Herbie Mann) and recorded five albums with Germany’s top act Marius Müller-Westernhagen. With his own band he has been touring Europe extensively for many years, working the field between blues, rock’n’roll and country music. The band’s live potential is well documented on their new CD “Live Fireworks” that gives further proof of Nick Woodland’s being a “helluva guitar player.”

Come On In My Kitchen - Paddy Milner

Paddy Milner is recognised as one of the leading blues piano players in the world (just read the praise from Dave Brubeck and Jon Cleary), but also as a superb original songwriter and distinctive singer. As a kid growing up in rural Dorset, UK, Milner began his career playing local pubs from a very young age (much younger than the legal age of entry!). He absorbed blues & boogie like a sponge, which will always remain a fundamental part of his music, but also spent a lot of time exploring jazz, classical music and playing in his father’s folk band. Later on, he was to learn from the masters including dueting with the legendary Jonnie Johnson and learning from Jon Cleary in New Orleans. Milner fondly remembers his father introducing him to the music of the likes of Jack Bruce, with whom Milner now regularly tours with. Milner was soon touring and learning his craft with visiting American blues artists and the best of British. Then in 2000 at the age of 19, he burst on to the scene in his own right with his debut album ‘21st Century Boogie’. The album rapidly garnered international accolades within the blues world and beyond. It showcased his knowledge and respect for the blues tradition while introducing his originality. His contribution to a BBC Radio 2 session, earned him a nomination for a Sony Award.

Rovo and System 7 "Hinotori" EP released June 3rd 2013. Digital download available from iTunes and http://rovoandsystem7.bandcamp.com. CD EP available from www.planetgong.co.uk
ROVO are a popular Japanese progressive rock/jam band. They feature two drummers, funky bass and innovative keyboards and are fronted by guitarist Seichi Yamamoto (formerly with The Boredoms) and masterful electric violinist Yuji Katsui.
ROVO
SYSTEM 7 is the dance music project of Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy, presenting a unique combination of tech-house beats and live musicianship, who have had a strong influence on the development of psychedelic ambient and electronica.
System 7 featuring Steve Hillage (Guitar, Programming) and Miquette Giraudy (Synthesiser)
PHOENIX RISING live is a combined show of Rovo and System 7 playing together, sometimes using the techno beats as the rhythmic basic and sometimes using the live drums, seamlessly morphing from one to the other.
The concert will showcase some of the most sophisticated blends of electronic beats and live playing ever produced, made possible by the skilled musicianship of eight players. Fans of System 7's Steve Hillage can be assured that in the format of "Phoenix Rising" his masterful electric guitar style is fully unleashed, with extensive soloing and duets with the electric violin of Rovo's Yuji Katsui.
THE ALBUM
After a groundbreaking tour of Japan in 2011 and a successful Tokyo show at O-East, Rovo and System 7 decided to take the project further by recording a "Phoenix Rising" studio album.
The album was recorded in Tokyo in September 2012, and was completed in January and February 2013 with overdubs in Steve Hillage’s London studio, with final mixing in Tokyo.
The album is released on 23rd September 2013. The first single, "Hinotori", is released on 3rd June 2013 as a digital download (on iTunes etc) and as a Ltd Edition CD/EP.
"Phoenix Rising" features original collaborations from Rovo and System 7. It also includes a new arrangement of "Meeting of the Spirits" by the Mahavishnu Orchestra – a perfect showcase for the album’s astonishing blend of guitar and electric violin.
ALBUM TRACK-BY-TRACK
1. Hinotori (Album Version) - A reworking of the brilliant Rovo live rock adaptation of System 7’s “Hinotori”, fully based on the live band with soaring guitar and violin solos.
2. Love for the Phoenix - A techno tour de force loosely based on the classic System 7 track "Habibi" from the first System 7 album (1991) but made with a completely new beat and overlayed with live playing and violin. A powerful emotion is employed that evokes the suffering and spirit of rebirth in Japan’s recent national tragedy, and the heart-based symbolism of the Phoenix.
3. Meeting of the Spirits - A simplified cover version of the iconic Mahavishnu Orchestra track, showcasing the fantastic blend of lead guitar and electric violin, and also displaying the extraordinary beats of the two Rovo drummers.
4. Cisco (Phoenix Rising) - An epic live Rovo track in the "Krautrock" spirit of Can and Neu, with one of the trippiest tempo changes of all time, and featuring an intricate middle section composed by Steve Hillage.
5. Unbroken - An electro/breakbeat track composed by System 7 that starts completely programmed and switches to completely live playing around the same theme, with another Mahavishnu-style guitar and electric violin melody
6. Sino Dub (Phoenix Rising) - Another live Rovo track combined for Phoenix Rising with a techno trance programmed beat in typical System 7 style.
7. Unseen Onsen - A floating ambient track with lush live playing, composed by Miquette Giraudy in the Mirror System style.
PHOENIX RISING
The Phoenix (in its Asian equivalent) is a national symbol of Japan. It’s a universal concept of the Bird of Fire that rises again and it has particular resonance after the terrible events in March 2011 that continue to place a dark shadow over Japan.
This project promotes Japan’s rebirth, and is supported by Rumiko Tezuka whose father Osamu Tezuka created the iconic manga series Hi No Tori (literally Bird of Fire in Japanese),
and also features elaborate artwork and video visuals created by Mood Magic (who made the System 7 videos) and video animator and artist Koji Morimoto (Animatrix).

You've Got To Play The Blues With Feeling or Don't Play The Blues At All - The Eddie Martin Band

With 12 rave-reviewed cd releases and constant globe-trotting since turning professional in 1995, London-born Martin has been called "The Ambassador of British Blues". As adept on acoustic instruments as electric, and as a soloist or band leader, he ranks amongst the most succesfully versatile bluesmen in the world. Nominated best UK Blues Guitarist, Best Harmonica Player, Best Band, Best Acoustic Artist and Best Blues cd release many times, his songs have made it onto TV and film soundtracks and to the song stable of Alligator Records. He has been broadcast live on international radio and tv with 3 sessions for BBC Radio 2, including at the famous Maida Vale Studios. He is now touring internationally with Trio and Big Band to promote his new rave-reviewed cd "Looking Forward Looking Back" ("this album is special" Blues and Soul "Excellent" Blues News) featuring Pee Wee Ellis (ex James Brown) and the Little Big Horns (ex Mick Jagger), and as a one man band to promote his 11th cd release "Folk and Blues", ("Superb" fROOTS, Brilliant" GUITARIST, "masterpiece" by Blues in Britain). There is no doubt that Martin's quarter century career of recording and performing has established his reputation as one of the most exciting and accomplished Blues Men alive today. He has invested most of his life in studying and contributing to the blues legacy. The impressive fruits of his considerable labours are plain to see – and hear - for those interested, but his determination to remain his own master, releasing his work only on his own label (Blueblood Records) may have kept his name below the radar for many. Martin honed his skills touring the US, and lived for a while in Texas. Following his first acclaimed USA tour he was befriended by the Dallas/Fort Worth Blues community and toured and recorded with the "Texas Blues Kings" formerly with Smokin’ Joe Kubek. Cutting his playing teeth on the "chitlin circuit" he has had one-man band residencies on Beale St in Memphis and in the Jook Joints of Clarksdale, Mississippi. As well as being recognised as a leading acoustic and electric guitarist he was also lauded as an Innovator for his rack-harmonica skills by the World Harmonica Festival in Germany where he performed solo, held a Masterclass and judged the World Blues Harmonica Competition. He continues to record live and studio sessions for National Radio programmes (BBC Radio 2 in the UK) of his own music. He has also been in demand as a guest session player, for example he played National Steel Slide guitar on the WC Handy Award-nominated “Blues and Beyond” cd by Dick Heckstall-Smith. (A founder member of John Mayalls’ "Blues Incorporated", Dick Heckstall-Smith described Eddie as “the hottest blues musician to come out of Britain since the 60s”). He has also been a guest harmonica player on live shows with the-late Honeyboy Edwards, Guy Davis and Larry Johnson. His live performances have always attracted accolades, for example. "The stuff of legend" said Guitarist Magazine last year, "a live act not to be missed" said Blues Revue USA. His acoustic style has developed into a percussive blend of traditional blues slide and fingerpicking styles. These he combines with rack harmonica playing and foot percussion in the style of the one-man-blues bands such as Duster Bennett, Joe Hill Louis and Dr Ross and is considered “the leading one man band in the UK” by the European Blues Association. His Electric and Slide guitar-playing has seen his cd work commended by the Guitar Press all over, receiving "excellent" tags from "Guitar" "Guitarist" in the UK, “Vintage Guitar USA”, and "Guitar and Bass" in Germany. A master songwriter, acoustic and electric guitarist, harmonica player and powerful singer, Eddie Martin has been described as "the most remarkable blues man of his generation" by Blues in Britain.

All Your Love - Tom Killner Band

The Tom Killner band is a hard hitting original Blues, Funk, Soul & Rock band based in Rotherham, and was formed in February 2012. It was not long before they were on the blues scene, with one of the first gigs being the British stage at The Great British Blues Festival; the band went from strength to strength playing many venues over the UK. This is no ordinary blues band; this is a band with a wide mix of funk, soul and rock. The band has a unique and defined sound that stands out from the crowd

Giles Hedley & the Aviators

Giles has been singing and playing roots blues across UK and Europe since the sixties, on bottleneck and lap steel guitars, acoustic and electric, and harmonica - his trademark is simultaneous nose-and-mouth harmonica playing, see http://youtube.com/watch?v=qmwVP74mxkc A regular on blues festival and club circuits both solo and with The Aviators, featured repeatedly on national radio in England and France, Giles is, in the words of blues magazine Blues in Britain, " a mainstay of British blues" or as Blues Matters puts it, "one of Britain’s foremost roots and country blues performers". His solo work recreates the passion, grit and fire of the delta blues greats - Son House (with whom Giles appeared in the Seventies), Kokomo Arnold, Robert Johnson, Fred McDowell. His band The Aviators is a funky, danceable roots-blues trio steeped in early Chicago blues. Earthy slide and steel guitars, a unique rack harmonica style, a passionate, Wolf-style voice, adventurous bass and drums right up front in the mix create the unmistakeable Aviators sound, quite unlike other British blues bands

Nantucket Sleighride - Gav Coulson Group

The Gav Coulson Group was formed in 2010 with the aim to bring a new class of contemporary blues-rock material to audiences throughout the country. The Gav Coulson Group draws a lot of its influences from modern day bluesmen such as Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore and Walter Trout but still holds true to some of the earlier contemporary blues heroes such as Hendrix and the Allman Brothers. You might also get an original version of a blues-rock classic included in a live set!. Now, some months later the band has added some of its own original material to its set list, written by Gav.
