KARA GRAINGER "SHIVER & SIGH"

Australia native, now Los Angeles based, Kara Grainger first picked up the guitar at age 12. She started performing in the late '90s as lead vocalist and guitarist with the successful Sydney-based blues outfit, Papa Lips. With her brother, acclaimed harmonica player Mitch Grainger, Kara and Papa Lips enjoyed a quintessentially Australian experience. Fuelled by national ABC Radio play for their two albums, "Harmony" and "High Time Now," the band toured up and down the sun drenched beach towns of Australia's east coast in an old Tarago van. They blew away audiences, soaked up the outdoor lifestyle, and notched up experience at all the significant blues and folk festivals along the way. In 2006, Kara signed to Australia's Craving Records as a solo artist who encouraged her to go to the United States to record the album. In 2008 she moved to Los Angeles, but continued to split her time between LA and Australia. Her debut CD, 2008's "Grand and Green River" received first prize in the IAP awards in Austin, Texas and also was in the top 40 Americana charts for over 34 weeks. In 2011, she released "LA Blues".

Over the past several years, Kara Grainger has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and performed on the festival circuit in Europe, Australia and Asia. She has also opened the show for many great artists, such as Buddy Guy, Marc Cohn, Peter Frampton, and Heart. In October of 2012, Kara performed at the Rock n Roots Festival in Singapore where she opened the show for Robert Plant and his band. So what drives Kara Grainger? In short, she has an unflinching desire to express herself combined with a daily dedication to her craft. In person, she exudes depth, grace and authenticity. Of the songwriting process, Kara says, "While many of my songs are framed in tales of hardship and heartbreak, they're really representative of life's spiritual challenges, and for me, a quest for the ultimate truth. It's very healing when the right words come for a song, so much so that when I sing them, it's like something is finally resolved." Kara is a unique talent whose music uplifts and inspires audiences around the world.

With Grammy Award winning producer David Z at the helm, and recorded at the Hobby Shop Studios in Los Angeles, "Shiver & Sigh's" 11 tracks include 5 Kara Grainger originals, as well as soulful re-imaginings of Robert Johnson's "C'mon in My Kitchen" and Al Jackson Jr./Timothy Matthews "Breaking up Somebody's Home". Joining Kara in the studio are Kirk Fletcher and Josh Sklair (guitars), Mike Finnigan (keys), Hutch Hutchinson (bass), Jimi Bott and James Gadson (drums), Lenny Castro (percussion), Mitch Grainger (harmonica), Paulie Cerra (saxophone), Paul Litteral (trumpet) and George Stanford (trombone). The result is a recording that shows the richness and diversity of Kara's influences -- Soul/Contemporary Pop/Americana/Blues.

"The first time I saw Kara play live she HAD ME before the first song was through. Kara is a triple threat...Singer, guitar player and song writer." - Randy Chortkoff (Producer/Musician/C.E.O. Eclecto Groove Records/Delta Groove Music)

"Kara Grainger is the REAL DEAL!" - David Z (Producer/Engineer - Johnny Lang, Etta James, Prince, Buddy Guy)

"Classic songwriting skills, smooth sultry vocals, and the ability to whip up a storm with a fiery slide guitar. Very few can boast this set of trump cards, but it just happens to be the hand dealt to Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist Kara Grainger, who exhibits an effortlessly seductive and modern take on roots, blues and soul music." - Americanaroots.com

"As a vocalist, Grainger has a throaty register that distinctly recalls Bonnie Raitt" – Austin Music Source

"What an amazing talent she is. The Australian born singer/songwriter has been cranking out her soulful blend of blues and folk for several years and is just now starting to receive some long overdue acclaim here in the States... She plays with passion and grace...This is someone you're going to hear a lot about." - Vinylpile

Delta Groove Music artists: The Mighty Mojo Prophets - Flyin' Home From Memphis - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Flyin' Home From Memphis, from The Mighty Mojo Prophets and it's a non stop blues jam. Opening With Sweetness, a Chicago style blues, Alex "Li'l A" Woodson lays out a nice plate of harp. Tom "Big Son" Eliff takes the lead on vocal and Mitch "Da Switch" Dow lays down some cool Elmore James style riffs. The Gambler has a very light breezy tempo along the lines of some of the early Butterfield work. Dow plays tight rhythm with Dave Deforest on bass and Alex Schwartz on drums. Lucky Man is back in the Chicago groove this time joined by San Pedro Slim on harp. Slim rips a pretty hot solo to compliment this very solid track. I Can't Believe switches to a full blown R&B track with Mark Sample on sax and Johnny V on Trumpet. Mike Malone adds real warmth on the bottom with his organ and Dow plays very slick riffs to compliment Eliff's vocals. The .45 is right out of Elmore James' song book with hot slide riffs by Dow. The is a great track and possibly one of my favorites on the release. California, a jump track, really plays into Eliff's natural singing style (to my ears) and has earmarks from Louis Jordan tracks. Dow plays some really nice lead work in response to singing lead and the band is extremely tight. Sample plays a really swingin' sax solo on this track as well. Remember Me is a great deep Chicago style blues track. Malone tickles the piano and Woodson is right on the harp. Dow even does a fair job of mimicking Morganfield's guitar style but a little cleaner overall. Very cool. One For Me has a bit of a rock a billy style or a twist of Chuck Berry. A real mover, this track will undoubtedly fill the dance floor. Strong Medicine comes out of the shoot with the Bo Diddley beat. Woodson blows a fine solo on this track opening the door for some fine slide work by Dow. Jo's Jive is a cool little instrumental featuring Dow playing some cool T-Bone Walker style riffs but keeping an identity all his own. A primary riff, a rolling riff and double stops make it a cool little track. Street Corner Preacher has a bit of a country blues gait and a funky hitch... think some of Bishop's tracks. Malone is featured on Keys on this track along with Eliff's vocals and a short solo from Dow. Wrapping up the release is Whachulookinfor, strongly influenced by Big Bill Broonzy or Charlie Segar. A light hearted blues featuring mostly Malone on piano and Eliff on vocals it's a great finishing track. This release does not earmark a specific sound for the band but does demonstrate a clear ability to write and play many styles of music that flow nicely together resulting in a interesting and enjoyable release.

THE MIGHTY MOJO PROPHETS
"FLYIN' HOME FROM MEMPHIS"
Although it's certainly not the first state that comes to mind when one associates the blues with a particular region of the U.S., California has contributed more than its fair share to the idiom. Even with our endless days of golden sunshine, palm tree-lined boulevards, over-abundance of beautiful women and Hollywood glitz and glamour, Californians still manage to come down with a serious case of the blues. And thanks to folks such as T-Bone Walker, Charles Brown, Lowell Fulson, Pee Wee Crayton, Big Joe Turner and Johnny "Guitar" Watson who migrated out West during the '40s and '50s, we even have a name for it—West Coast blues. In the ensuing years this style continued to flourish in the Golden State, propelled forward by another generation of artists in Southern California that included Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, the James Harman Band, William Clarke, Lynwood Slim and the Hollywood Fats Band.
It's this particular brand of blues that informs the sound of Long Beach newcomers The Mighty Mojo Prophets. Formed in late 2007 by vocalist Tom "Big Son" Eliff and guitarist Mitch "Da Switch" Dow, the Prophets set forth to lay down some of the most honest, straight-ahead blues that they could conjure up. Rather than taking the easy way out and simply retread the songbooks of their bygone heroes of yesteryear, Eliff and Dow put their heads together (and possibly a little Goofer dust) and crafted their self-titled national debut for Rip Cat Records in 2011. The results landed them a 2012 Blues Music Award nomination for Best New Artist Debut and a ticket to Memphis, where the band had the opportunity to work their mojo in front of a crowd of their own peers at the esteemed event's pre-party celebration on May 10, 2012, at the Cook Convention Center in downtown Memphis.
The Mighty Mojo Prophets' follow-up effort Flyin' Home From Memphis continues the tale with thirteen skillfully written and wonderfully performed songs, composed by founding members Tommy Eliff and Mitch Dow. Together they've summoned a veritable bevy of musical variations beyond their adopted West Coast roots to incorporate other regional styles such as Chicago and Texas blues, Memphis soul, country blues and proto-rock 'n' roll. With solid rhythmic support from Dave Deforest on bass and Alex Schwartz on drums, along with special guests San Pedro Slim and Alex "Li'l A" Woodson on harmonica, Mike Malone on piano and organ, plus the B7 Horns consisting of Mark Sample on tenor sax and Jonny V on trumpet, this collection stands out as a refreshingly original take on traditional roots styles in a sea of 'the same ol' thing'.

"Dow compliments Eliff's vocals with big splashes of glistening chords and some dazzling solos that recall T-Bone Walker and Albert Collins."
– Blues Revue Magazine
"Tom "Big Son" Eliff's vocals are smooth and authoritative. Guitarist Mitch Dow masterfully dishes out blues with the finesse of a jazz player. Alex "Li'l A" Woodson's harp tone is thick and quintessentially "blues"…"
– American Blues News
"They may have a foot firmly planted in the soil tilled by Big Joe Turner and
T-Bone Walker but they reach far beyond the Golden State to Texas, Chicago,
the Mississippi Delta and beyond."
– Blues Blast Magazine
