Bloodshot Records signs Luke Winslow-King

BLOODSHOT RECORDS SIGNS NEW ORLEANS-BASED ARTIST LUKE WINSLOW-KING

THE COMING TIDE TO BE RE-RELEASED IN MARCH 2013

Bloodshot Records is very excited to announce the signing of New Orleans-based artist Luke Winslow-King. Luke initially caught our ear with his unique style, emerging from the ashes of Delta blues, New Orleans traditional jazz, ragtime, and pre-war American folksong. After being transfixed watching Luke and singer/washboard player Esther Rose perform gorgeous duets at a noisy college bar in Chicago we were straight up hooked. His amalgam of sounds is full of culture and texture, and respectively Winslow-King’s knowledge of music history and attention to detail are nearly as captivating as his impeccable song compositions, guitar technique, and warm voice.

As for a little background detail: in 2010, already with two full-length albums under his belt, LWK formed a trio consisting of Rose and upright bass player Cassidy Holden that remains the namesake’s core incarnation. In June the group self released the exceptional The Coming Tide and after being bowled over, we knew Luke and Co. would make a great addition to the roster.

In March 2013 Bloodshot will re-release The Coming Tide with bonus tracks and new packaging.

Below is the remainder of the LWK’s show dates in 2012, with many more to come in the new year. He and the group tour extensively – roughly 175 performances over the last year – so keep an eye out for them in your area.

Bloodshot Records Release: Andre Williams - Hoods and Shades - Review - Release Date: Feb 28 2012

I have just received and had the opportunity to review a new release by Andre Williams called Hoods and Shades. The release consists of 9 tracks teaming up with Matt Smith and with Dennis Coffey on guitar. Andre ventures into a folk/rock/psychedelic/ R&B zone. Other guests include Jim White (Dirty Three, Cat Power), Greasy Carlisi (Robert Gordon, Chris Spedding), Jim Diamond (Dirtbombs) and Don Was. The first song, Dirt, is a straight forward uptempo blues track. It is followed up by A Good Day To Feel Bad, which is a rhythm track with spoken word and tasty guitar riffs played behind. I've Got Money On My Mind is an interpretation on Snoop with a little James Brown and jazz flavor. Hoods and Shades (the title track) again more of spoken word over a rhythmic background is interesting and has cool guitar soloing throughout. Jawdropper is back to a basic boogie. Andre uses his singing style but really is again more of a talking voice. It is a nice contrast to what I am accustomed to. Again a cool guitar riff. Hu-Matic Man, a more swampy blues tune, has nice guitar riffs and moves along at a shuffle beat. Mojo Hannah is a real swampy song almost like a Dr John Voodoo song from Lousiana. Swamp Dog's Hot Spot is a pretty cool story song again with a mystic kind of aura again with some laid back undertones. The last track, Gimme, is a bit more uptempo but again consistent with the balance of the recording. Overall I think the cd is very interesting. If you want to check out something different, this may be it!

Bloodshot Records artist: Exene Cervenka - The Excitement of Maybe - New Release Review

I just received a copy of Exene Cervenka's new recording, "The Excitement of Maybe".
Many know Exene as a lead member and co-founder of the legendary Los Angeles punk rock band, X.

Following the formal breakup of X, a band she still performs with on occasion, Exene continued her transformation into a more formidable solo artist by continuing to write musically, releasing critically acclaimed solo albums (1989’s Old Wives’ Tale and 1990’s Running Scared), within the print medium through poetry and books, in spoken word performances, and as a visual artist. She has also been a member of the groups Auntie Christ, the Original Sinners and the Knitters.

In this, Exene's latest endeavor, she puts together a collection of songs about being in love, loves lost and forgetting love. “In the early sixties I heard great song after great song. Ray Price, The Shirelles, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Brenda Lee, Ray Charles. And almost all of them love songs. Sad ones, happy ones, funny ones, tragic ones. That’s what five year- old Exene figured out. But love, on the other hand, I can’t ever seem to figure out.”

Exene's newest endeavor runs the gamut of orchestral accompaniment, horn sections and pedal steel guitar. The simpler tunes like "Alone in Arizona" and "Long Time Ago" showcase the sensitivity of Exene's voice and writing capabilities. "I Wish It Would Stop Raining" has the haunting minor harmonies of an Appalachian folk song with fiddle accompaniment.

This is the continuation of a journey by a successful artist which if sure to add more followers to an already solid fan base.

Last week, JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound released their Bloodshot Records debut, Want More

Last week, JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound released their Bloodshot Records debut, Want More, an 11-song collection of soul crooning, R&B horn pops, and a raw post-punk aesthetic. Metromix mentioned that the album, “Sounds like the MC5 jamming with Otis Redding’s horn section.”
Following the release of their first single from the album, “Everything Will Be Fine” (available for download below), the band has followed up with a music video for the song as well. Co-created by the band and folks at Chicago’s storied Second City, the video is a fusing of retro ‘80s Dial-A-Lawyer commercials and a narrative that brings JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound from the street to the board room.

In addition to the main video, the band also made five short teaser videos that showcase their well-intentioned but somewhat misinformed manager, Glenn Peacock.

Here’s what folks are saying:
JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound describe themselves as a post-punk soul band, but their sound is so much more expansive than that. Uptown Sound is on par with soul musicians from the heyday of the genre’s popularity. – Paste Magazine
This Chicago band’s second album is a lively set of gritty old-school soul and funk injected with some raw garage-rock aggression. An energetic blend of tight, funky rhythms, stabbing horns, keyboards and guitars accompanies frontman JC Brooks, whose impressive vocals gracefully glide between grainy shouting and smooth crooning with some spine-tingling falsetto on songs ranging from hedonistic party starters to socially conscious anthems. – Don Yates, KEXP
Neo-Soul glory. – New York Times
A cross between the Chambers Brothers and agit-punks The Make-Up, Mr. Brooks and Co. are one of the hottest US soul acts right now. – MOJO Magazine
