George Bisharat, known on stage as Big Harp George, has carved out a unique spot in the modern blues scene as a master of the chromatic harmonica. While most blues players stick to the smaller diatonic harp, he leans into the complex chromatic model to build a smooth, sophisticated sound inspired by jazz horn sections and classic West Coast jump blues. Before turning to music full-time later in life, he spent decades in San Francisco working as a criminal defense attorney and a law professor. That fascinating background brings a sharp, witty, and socially conscious edge to his songwriting that sets him apart from traditional acts.
Based in Northern California, his signature sound is deeply anchored in his work at the legendary Greaseland Studios. Recording at Greaseland allows him to collaborate closely with top-tier West Coast blues musicians, capturing a vibrant, analog warmth that defines his entire catalog. His tracks are packed with swinging tempos and stellar production values, blending old-school rhythms with clever commentary on everything from daily relationship quirks to modern politics. By leaning heavily into the Greaseland family and avoiding easy formulas, he has earned a reputation as one of the most inventive and engaging minds in the blues world today.
Opening with Come Out Swinging, a high-energy instrumental Big Harp George shows exactly what he has in mind. Featuring hot sax work by Doug Rowan (tenor) and Aaron Lington (bari) and BHG on chromatic harmonica this track is smoking! Easy paced, Yes Dear! addresses marital compliance through a humorous, rhythmic shuffle with BHG on lead vocal (backed by Marcel Smith, James and Dwayne Morgan), Lington and Rowan on sax, Joe Kyle on bass D'Mar on drums and some excellent guitar riffs by Kid Andersen. I Will Find You is a real interesting track in 3/4 with a european sound. With BHG on vocal and with melodic harmonica, joined by Basma Edrees on violin, Kid on bass, Loay Dahbour on riq, duf, Mohamed Elshazly on oud and D'Mar on drums this track adds a cool, almost country western, texture.
On Be Adorable, a Dixieland track, BHG leads the vocal melody with Mike Olmos on trumpet rich vocal harmonies from Lisa Leuschner Andersen and stumble drum rhythms by D'Mar. Very cool. Last Trip To Itaipu has a crisp, Latin feel with a tight percussion rhythm by D'Mar, with Ami Molinelli on surdo, Charlie Bisharat on violin and a strong fretless bass solo by Kid. Super melodic chromatic harmonica (that's a mouthful) from BHG makes this one of my favorites on the release. Instrumental, Mista Boins!, has a smooth, prancing feel featuring Chris Burns on organ and BHG on harmonica. A refreshing tune and a nice addition.
With traces of Leiber and Stoller, Death Rattle of the Republic, has a funky, feel with a great open lane for BHG to roll in some nasty harmonica riffs, powerful backing vocals by Marcel Smith and The Morgan Brothers and of course no 50's style track would be complete without honking bari sax of Lington. Nice! Wrapping the release is One Day, a show-tuney, ballad featuring BHG on lead vocal and some really warm violin work by Bisharat and rich backing vocals by Morgan Brothers and Smith. A clever and dark closer for a really solid release.
