Delta Groove Music artist: Mitch Kashmar - West Coast Toast - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, West Coast Toast, by Mitch Kashmar and it swings. Opening with hot shuffle, East of 82nd Street, Mitch Kashmar on harp is joined by Junior Watson on guitar, Fred Kaplan on keys, Bill Stuve on upright bass and Marty Dodson on drums. Mitch really rocks it on this one and Watson is throwing fire from the frets. Super opener. With a Latin flavor,Willie Dixon's Too Many Cooks, has a cool groove featuring Mitch on lead vocal, claves and harp. Dodson's precision playing and glistening chords from Watson set the pace and Kaplan's solo on piano is strong. Henry Glover's Young Girl is up next with Chicago style. With a solid bottom Kashmar vocals are tops and his harp playing is soulful and adventurous. Cool swinger, The Petroleum Blues, has a super 12 bar feel and and Kashmar sits nicely in the groove. Watson nails it on guitar again with a really nicely styled guitar solo. Slowing the pace down a bit, Mood Indica, gives Kashmar the chance to really milk the blues from his harp. Kaplan's piano work is really cool and blended with Watson's guitar work, this is my favorite track on the release. Cool boogie track, Don't Stay Out All Night, rides nicely on Stuve and Dodson's bottom giving Kashmar space to stretch vocally and Watson to trade solo's with Kashmar. Gritty Chicago blues, My Lil' Stumptown Shack, is as pure as it gets. Kashmar's vocals are deep and a super weaving of blues instrumentation by Kashmar, Kaplan and Watson are planted solidly on the work of Stuve and Dodson. One of my favorites on the release is Alcohol Blues with a straight groove and a nice walking bass line by Stuve. Kashmar's vocals are clear and his harp solos sit nicely on Watson and Kaplans work. Very cool. Wrapping the release is Canoodlin', a silky smooth jazz instrumental which at over 7 minutes gives Kasmar, Kaplan and Watson each super opportunities to dish out some solid solos. Excellent closer for a tasty release.

Mascot Label Group Announce Release Of Black Sites Debut: Monochrome for 2/17/17

MASCOT LABEL GROUP AND BLACK SITES ANNOUNCE RELEASE
OF BAND’S DEBUT IN MONOCHROME ON FEBRUARY 17, 2017
Album Presents The Return of Mark Sugar Following Trials Dissolution

Chicago, IL --- Mascot Records has announced the global release of Black Sites debut In Monochrome, on February 17, 2017.  A lyric video for the lead track “Dead Languages” can be streamed here:

In 2015, revered metal guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Mark Sugar had a creative breakthrough that led him to leave behind a modern metal legacy to bravely forge a new one. Now, one of underground metal’s most uncompromising visionaries returns with a new band and an invigorating heavy-with-melody aesthetic. Sugar offers, “I wanted to challenge myself with clean singing and by writing well-crafted songs. I went back to my influences, old school metal, prog rock, and hard rock—music built on classic songwriting.”

Sugar was formerly known as the mastermind behind the cult metal quartet Trials, a group that amicably folded in 2015, leaving behind three artistically bold and well-received albums that bridged the divide between thrash and melodic death metal.  His new band, Black Sites conjures burly proto metal riffs and vibey grooves, whiplash thrash, moody ambience, and the stately expanse of modern and classic prog. The Chicago-based hard rock quartet’s debut, In Monochrome (Mascot Records), thrills with unexpected twists and turns, and tuneful songcraft that never sacrifices heft for hooks.

An aura of mystique surrounds Black Sites. The band is a super group of sorts, featuring some of Chicago’s finest players from the underground metal scene. The band features Mark Sugar on vocals/guitar, ex-Trials bandmate Ryan Bruchert on guitar, John Picillo on bass, from Without Waves and Immortal Bird, and Chris Avgerin on drums, from Nequient and Autonomy.  The four-piece band draws inspiration from a panoramic pedigree of classic and modern metal and hard rock influences including Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, 1970s Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Fates Warning, Motörhead, Queensrÿche, Voivod, Hammers Of Misfortune, and Dawnbringer.

The story goes that at the time of the Trials split, it was was seeing Avgerin during this transitional period that encouraged Sugar to follow his muse. He recalls, “Watching Chris play awesome John Bonham, Ginger Baker, and Bill Ward style drums in these bands that had a 1960s vibe really inspired me.”

Sugar and Avgerin worked on the demos as a duo before heading to Gunpoint Recording Studios with recording engineer Quentin Poynter (The Skull). Bassist John Picillo joined the band halfway through the sessions, and guitarist Ryan Bruchert signed on after the recordings.

The 10-track album opens with the elegiac piano interlude “M Fisto Waltz,” which eventually lunges for the jugular with lacerating guitars. In Monochrome’s first official track, “Dead Languages,” unfurls the album’s manifesto of musical intent.  Packed within its 5:23 minutes the band traverse Sabbath-y grooves, agile progressive rock drums, Thin Lizzy-esque guitar harmonies, sinister guttural vocals, and soaring melodic vocals.

Other album standouts include “Hunter/Gatherer,” “Burning Away The Day,” and “Locked Out – Shut Down.” “Hunter/Gatherer” opens with a darkly classical acoustic guitar figure and plaintive, clean vocals. It’s a storyteller song that uses dramatic dynamics to convey the narrative. Within the epic are slight nods to vintage Mercyful Fate, Trouble and Queensrÿche. “Burning Away The Day” is an instrumental tour de force with savage 1970s hard rock drums and fleet-fingered guitar solo playing that explodes with classical melodicism and proto-shred flash.  The relentless pummel of “Locked Out – Shut Down” evinces Sugar’s thrash roots.

As anticipation builds for the band, and Black Sites releases its debut long player and plays its first shows ever, Sugar is reflective. After all, in the span of a year he’s gone from no band to a new band with an irresistible old school aesthetic. “I remember driving in my car listening to the final album and just feeling so relieved and excited to hear these songs come to life,” he says. “I learned a lot during this time. I learned how to keep an open mind and stay focused. I feel like this is the best thing I’ve ever done.”

The full track list features “M Fisto Waltz,” “Dead Languages,” “Monochrome,” “Burning Away The Day,” “Hunter Gatherer,” “Watching You Fall,” “Locked Out – Shut Down,” “In The Woods,” “The Tides.”

Reference Recordings artist: Fiona Boyes - Professin' The Blues - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Professin' The Blues, by Fiona Boyes and it's pure. This release is stripped down with only Boyes on vocal and guitar/resonator, joined by Jimi Bott on drums and Denny Croy on bass. hand writing 18 pages of liner notes, Boyes does a real nice job of bringing you into the environment with her. Opening with Can't Stay Here No More, Boyes creates the feeling of years of living on the road and resting on a spot. With only acoustic guitar, tambourine and drum this is primitive. Devil You Know maintains the primitive feel but is stepped up in pace. With cool resonator slide Boyes considers the cons of accepting the status quo. With a jangly, rag time sound, Lay Down With Dogs considers fidelity with a touch of humor. With just a touch of country rock, Card Sharp, has a cool cigar box riff that follows the melody. Sliding into the chorus, a cool track with a cool hook. One of my favorite track on the release, Old and Stiff has a rag feel with rim shots and the sassy attitude of the original blues women with a play on words. A contemporary island sound with simple chords and bongos, this is a really cool little number with a dance beat and nice vocals. Another of my favorite tracks on the release is Stubborn Old Mule. With a quick stepping pace and traces of Taj Mahal reinforced by Croy's bass work, a strong foot stomper. Catfish Fiesta has a taste of New Orleans and features highlighted bass work of Croy and a snappy Latin beat. Very nice. If I Should Die is an eerie sort of track with a melody along the lines of Baby Please Don't Go. Interesting. Kicking to the full blown Chicago version of Baby Please Don't Go, Boyes vocals are strong and gritty accompanied by her cigar box guitar and drums. Wrapping the release is, Face In The Mirror, an easy folk track with a flowing waltz like rhythm. Boyes takes her time singing and with her guitar just takes it easy and sends it home. Nice closer to a cool release.

Blues Guitar Legend Kenny Neal Receives Grammy Nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. “Bloodline”

Blues Guitar Legend Kenny Neal Receives Grammy Nomination  for Best Contemporary Blues Album. “Bloodline”

Los Angeles - Cleopatra Records would like to proudly congratulate Kenny Neal on his Grammy Nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. for his “Bloodline” album released through the Cleopatra Blues imprint.

Kenny Neal is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and is widely renowned as a modern swamp-blues master who also is a member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and a multi-award winning talent. Born in 1957 in New Orleans and raised in Baton Rouge, Neal began playing music at a very young age, learning the basics from his father, singer and blues harmonica player, Raful Neal. Family friends like Lazy Lester, Buddy Guy and Slim Harpo contributed to Kenny's early musical education. At 13, he joined his father’s band and, four years later, he was recruited and toured extensively as Buddy Guy’s bass player.

Through the years, Neal has shared the stage or worked with a who’s-who list of blues and R&B greats at one time or another, including B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Muddy Waters, Aaron Neville, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. Since signing with Alligator Records in 1988, Neal has released a series of consistently lauded albums featuring his laid-back, Baton Rouge blues, with a modern spin on the Louisiana sound he grew up with. The Chicago Tribune pegged Kenny as “one of a mere handful of truly inventive young contemporary guitarists, Neal has something fresh to say and the chops with which to say it,” while AllMusic said his “gruff-before-their-time vocals retain their swamp sensibility, while assuming a bright contemporary feel that tabs him as a leading contender for future blues stardom.” Blues Revue agreed, calling Kenny “one of the brightest young stars on the blues horizon, and a gifted artist.”

Neal has never sounded better than he does on Bloodline, offering some of the most moving songwriting and electric performances of his incredible career. In addition, no less than 8 members of the Neal clan lend their musical talents to this unique album, making it a true family affair and proving beyond doubt that the blues is most definitely in Neal’s “Bloodline.”

Roots-Based Singer/Fingerstyle Guitarist Cary Morin Set to Release New CD, "Cradle to the Grave," January 13

Roots-Based Singer/Fingerstyle Guitarist Cary Morin Set to Release New CD, Cradle to the Grave, January 13

FT. COLLINS, CO – Roots-based singer/fingerstyle guitarist Cary Morin announces a January 13 release date for his fourth CD, Cradle to the Grave. Recorded and engineered by Richard Werdes at Studio Underground in Ft. Collins, Colorado, the new album completes a three-album project of acoustic recordings by Cary Morin, who’s been acclaimed as “one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today.” Stream the track, “Lay Baby Lay,” here: http://www.carymorin.com/track/1138398.

Cary Morin will celebrate the new album with a special CD release show on January 13th at The OtterBox Digital Dome Theater in the Ft. Collins Museum of Discovery:  http://fcmod.org/the-museum/digital-dome/.

On Cradle to the Grave, Cary Morin brings together the great musical traditions of America and beyond like no other artist. These recordings provide a timeline of his songwriting and guitar work spanning 2014 to 2017. The lyrics range from blues to folk and sometimes shine a light on his Native American Heritage and small town life in America. At times, the collection conveys the simplicity of a single chord to complex fingerstyle guitar. “The goal was to create a sort of triptych of my solo fingerstyle journey, one that demonstrates the evolution of my progression with songwriting, finger picking, and the use of open tunings,” says Morin. “Cradle to the Grave is a culmination of my musical efforts as a soloist thus far.”

Of the album’s 11 tracks, eight are originals that showcase his skills as both a singer and guitar player. Also included are three unique covers of songs that cover a wide palette ranging from pop legend Prince (“Nothing Compares 2 U”), to noted bluesman Willie Brown (“Mississippi Blues”) and jam-band super group Phish “Back on the Train”).

“The title track is a bit telling,” relates Morin. “The lyrics refer to the realization that, through all of my travels and experiences, I have come to understand that life is fleeting. I think you can hear this theme in the song, ‘Lay Baby Lay,’ also, though this tune is more directly related to the experience of touring and travel and the compromises therein. The last song, ‘Watch over Me,’ is a different take on the title track, as though both songs are bookends for the whole album. The theme of spirituality seems to weave its way into my work more often as the years pass. Perhaps its impending mortality! I hope we are put on this earth to help each other and should we find ourselves alone for some reason, there is still someone there with us, a higher power to help us complete our journey.”

With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that alternately convey melodic elation and gritty world-weariness, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as acoustic Native Americana with qualities of blues, bluegrass, jazz, jam, reggae, and dance.

Being a Crow tribal member, Morin brings special significance to the song, “Dawn’s Early Light,” written in support of the efforts of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. “I'm not really a protest song sort of writer, but this song seemed important,” states Morin. “It’s written from my memories of growing up near the Missouri River and around my people in Montana. As a child, I became familiar with our traditional music and rural life. This song may be an oversimplification of the situation, but I have always felt that the honoring of a treaty, no matter when it was made, is not a complex idea. History has proved this not to be the case, but I hope this time it is. Honor the treaty, simple as that.”

The son of an Air Force officer, Morin was born in Billings, Montana, and spent the bulk of his youth in Great Falls, where he cut his teeth picking guitar standards at neighborhood get-togethers, before relocating to Northern Colorado. There, his musical career hit the ground running with The Atoll, a band he founded in 1989 that toured nationally for over 20 years, gaining a devoted following. Later, he achieved international acclaim with The Pura Fé Trio.
With The Atoll and The Pura Fé Trio, and as a solo artist, Morin has played celebrated venues across the globe, including the Paris Jazz Festival, Winter Park Jazz Festival, Folk Alliance International, River People Festival, Shakori Hills Festival, the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and most recently, Rochefort En Accords festival in France and The Copenhagen Blues Festival, among countless others.

Morin’s stage credits also include Tribe at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, and co-authorship of Turtle Island, a 50-member production that played two consecutive years to sold-out audiences in Northern Colorado. With the Red Willow Dancers, he was a guest of the internationally renowned Kodo Drummers, performing at their 1998 Spring Festival and additional dates in Japan.

He has produced or performed on over 20 recordings, and has toured across the US, as well as Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, Ireland, Sweden, and the UK. Morin’s performances have reached millions on national TV in Japan, France, and the UK, as well as on national radio in the US (NPR’s “Beale Street Caravan”), UK (BBC’s “Whose London”), France (RFI), Switzerland, and Belgium.

For two consecutive years (2013 and 2014), Cary won the Colorado Blues Challenge Solo Championship. He has also been nominated for Aboriginal Entertainer of the Year and Best Blues CD in the Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards for three years running. In 2013, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fort Collins Music Association (FoCoMA) and won the Colorado Fan Favorite Poll in the blues category for his second solo release, Streamline, and favorite songwriter in 2016.  Cary has won the Colorado Blues Society’s Members Choice Awards in several categories for three years in-a-row.

In addition to his solo pursuits, Cary Morin performs with Young Ancients, in collaboration with John Magnie and Steve Amedée of The Subdudes.

Bobby Rush, Janiva Magness receive Grammy nominations

BOBBY RUSH, JANIVA MAGNESS
RECEIVE GRAMMY NOMINATIONS
A fourth Grammy nod for Bobby Rush, whose Porcupine Meat is nominated in Best Traditional Blues Category, while Janiva Magness scores first nom
with Love Wins Again in Best Contemporary Blues category.
Ceremony is February 12 in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Two of blues’ biggest names, Mississippi legend Bobby Rush and contemporary artist Janiva Magness, received Grammy nominations in the 59th Annual Grammy Awards announcements this morning. The awards will be announced at the Grammy Awards ceremony on February 12, 2017 in Los Angeles.
It’s Rush’s fourth nomination, this one for his critically acclaimed Rounder Records debut album Porcupine Meat. With special guests Dave Alvin, Joe Bonamassa, Keb’ Mo’, and Vasti Jackson, and backing from the New Orleans “A” team, the release cemented Bobby Rush’s legacy as the most vital blues artist of his generation. Producer was Rounder’s Scott Billington. Rush is a 10-time Blues Music Award winner, and 41-time nominee.
Rush was previously nominated for his albums Hoochie Man (2000), Down in Louisiana (2013) and Decisions with the band Blinddog Smokin’ (2014).
“How much you wanna bet he finally wins that Grammy?” predicted Goldmine magazine of the album, while No Depression enthused: “Buckle up or if you prefer hang on tight and get ready for one of the funkiest, most jaw dropping rides you have ever been on that is going to take you down in the mud and muck of southwestern Louisiana and to heights that you didn’t think you could ever reach. Yes, already a first runner for Record of the Year.”
Responding to the announcement, Rush said, “This is the greatest thing to ever happen to me in my life, for being with the competition around me. I want everyone to win, but I certainly want to win. Just being in the race is to be a winner. Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose. I’m not a sore loser especially with people like this. The category is so strong.”
Janiva MagnessLove Wins Again album on Blue Élan Records was another evolutionary step for the soulful, elegant, award-winning singer-songwriter. Its 11 core songs and two bonus tracks were built on a sonically sophisticated architecture that’s in full service of her remarkably flexible and generous voice. The album shattered genre barriers by enshrining elements of Americana, soul, rock, pop, country and blues, and helped Magness cross over into Americana (she charted Top 30 on the format’s radio chart and performed at the Americana Music Festival & Conference). The album reached #1 on Blues radio and remained in the Top 10 for seven months. Magness is a seven-time Blues Music Award recipient and a 25-time nominee.

According to Downbeat, “Janiva Magness is one lucky woman: Her singing is soulful and intimate.” Living Blues called it “a knockout addition to Janiva Magness’ stellar catalog.”

On her first-ever Grammy nomimation, Magness said, “I am profoundly humbled by today's Grammy nomination announcements. Standing in very tall cotton. Love Wins Again for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Thanks so much producer Dave Darling, Blue Élan, my band, Jeff DeLia and 72 Music Management, Cary Baker and Conqueroo, John Oszajca, Leslie Rouffe, Frank Roszak, and Atomic Music Group! Wow!”
Both Rush and Magness are managed by 72 Music Management.

Montrose Records Presents "A Concert in the Badlands"

Montrose Records Presents
"A Concert in the Badlands"

New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment.  Interesting history for sure. However, more so the region is absolutely breathtaking.  Take for example the Village of Ruidoso, a small community nestled in the Sacramento Mountains.  While the local attractions include a world class horse track, ski slopes, and two casinos the backdrop of the mountains and all of the family owned craft stores and specialty restaurants help make this quaint village a place to return to over and over again.  In fact, the Cagle family (Montrose Records – Houston) liked the region so much that they built a beautiful log cabin home there with a stunning view to say the least.  Accordingly, when they were in the design phase Rich wasn’t going to be without a music studio so he designed a private recording suite.  After their home was complete and time moved forward Rich would be out and about meeting the local musicians.  It was through his conversations with Jamie Estes, President of the Lincoln County Food Bank that the topic of raising money to support their community would come up.  Everyone agreed and the talk moved toward recording a fund raising CD.  The musicians liked the idea of recording a CD that featured local talent and their original songs.  The goal would be simple – all the proceeds from the sale of the CDs would go to the Lincoln County Food Bank.  Once the plan was in place, Rich produced and recorded it, and now they are ready to host a live event to help kick off the sales.  Good people banding together to deliver something of value for a good cause.  The CD release party will be hosted by Sacred Grounds Coffee and Tea House, 2704 Suddereth Dr., Ruidoso, N.M. 88345, at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 18, 2016. There are twenty artist/bands on the CD, leading off with Mike Montoya, followed by, the Flying J Wranglers, the Noisy River Band, Bobby Chavira, Delaney Davis, Gleewood, Grant & Ella Miller, Tradd Tidwell, the Hillbilly Potentates, Jonathan Walls, Jones & Miles, Mark Kashmar, Micah Schultz, Sierra Edmister, Monk Burris, DJ Pete Davis, Malachi Martin, Rich Chorne & Patty Tiscareno, Scotty Talley and Susan Kolb & Doug Gibson.

American Showplace Music artist: Cris Jacobs - Dust To Gold - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dust To Gold from Cris Jacobs and it's quite good. Opening with The Devil or Jesse James, a rugged radio track, Cris Jacobs on guitar and vocal is joined by Todd Herrington on bass, Dusty Ray Simmons on percussion and John Ginty on keys. With a mellow sway, Kind Woman has a real nice groove. Jacobs vocas are smooth and his dobro playing soft and warm. Halleluja Hustler has a sweet melody and with nicely blended vocals, rolling piano by Ginty and swirling guitars by Jacobs, very nice. Jack The Whistle and The Hammer is a snappy, soft rocker with a touch of Buckingham Nicks. Jacobs springs across the fretboard with a tight little guitar solo giving the track just a bit more dressing, backed by Ginty. Very nice. One of the richest tracks on the release, Cold Carolina, has the warmth of the summer sun and the space of high country with Jonathan Sloane on slide. Bone Digger has a real cool funky groove with Jacobs delivering an almost hiphop lyrical skat with tight drum riffs and and clever guitar soloing. Very nice! With an almost Little feat bounce, Delivery Man is a really nicely crafted track with finely woven vocals and intricate guitar and keyboard instrumentation. Excellent! Break Your Fall is the most likely radio track on the release with the rhythmic solidity of tempted, the vocal strength and blending of Michael McDonald but with much more clarity and Ginty's organ work giving the track a soulful bottom. Very nice. Another cool R&B style track, Shine Your Weary Light, has great spring and soul. Sit still listening to this release...you can't. Simmons and Herrington really anchor the bottom and Jacobs' work on electric guitar and dobro really set this track apart. His vocals are soulful and Ginty's organ work really dresses it perfectly. Wrapping the release is acoustic ballad, Leaving Charm City. Jacobs has clearly shown himself as an accomplished, vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. With only Sloane's slide work in the background, this track is a super closer for a really nice release.

Southpaw Steel 'N' Twang - Stat(u)e of Mind - New release review

I just received the most recent release, Stat(u)e of Mind from Southpaw Steel 'N' Twang and it's terrific! This is a creative release with a lot of diversity. Opening with Gateway, a subtle instrumental, JP Monkkonen on bass, acoustic and baritone guitars, Tero Mikkonen on drums, percussion and ukulele, and Ville Leppanen on steel, electric, resonator and vocals, this is a really nice tune with lead primarily in resonator. Gentle Storm has a blend of progressive with a touch of country with Leppanen on lead steel. Funky instrumental, Aloha Garage, has a snappy drum beat, strong bass line and a cool lead steel making this a cool rocker. Water, has bit of a Latin feel and at times sounds like The Mars Volta with rowdy vocals but cruising swing on steel. Very cool! Route 68 really jazzes it up but with a modern touch. Excellent jazz chords and jamming with a bit of twang bar laid in is just the right touch. This track really opens up with strong addition of drum work by Mikkonen. Excellent! Another jazz number, Blue Jean, is smooth as silk with bluesy guitar runs and beautiful articulation. On Lotto, the band has a real nice rock fusion groove and Pekka Grohn adds real nice keys. llO is a really interesting composition with a bit sounds like traces of King Crimson blended into an otherwise jazz rock track. With it's more classical styling, this track takes a nice ride. The second of the vocal tracks on the release, Something, is a strong ballad with a strong melodic line and vocals. It puts me in mind of the earliest of Elton John music with a nice blend on melody and composition. Very nice. Duel is a really cool track that reminds me quite a bit of older western type bolero's. With exceptional guitar work upfront, not unlike Akkerman in Focus, anchored by Mikkonen's drums, this track takes a full ride adding Jouko Auramo on trombone, Jermu Kolvukoski on trumpet and Perttu Pannula on sax. This track is a serious composition! Wrapping the release is Sergio, another track with a western flair. With nicely arpeggiated chords, twang bar bends and strong tom tom work in the background, this track is an excellent closed to a really cool release!

MDV Visual: Man Of The World: The Peter Green Story - DVD - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Man of the World: The Peter Green Story and it's riveting. Many blues fan have been listening to the original Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Peter Green for a long time and most have seen video clips of their performances but this release is seriously great! Rather than paste together more clips with music that may or may not be released, this film takes a totally new direction playing Peter Green's music in full fidelity between and behind excellent candid interviews with John Mayall, Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Peter's brothers and many others. This film is focused and fresh, showing the band as it was ... up close and really personal questions regarding Green, his talent, his problems and how the band Fleetwood Mac got it's name. It's tormented yet sensitive. It's done in an organized fashion so that it's easy to follow but not oversimplified to be repetitive or slow. Last but not least, you get a personal tour by Green of his guitar collection. It's curious to see his wonder with each guitar as if they are new but then his recall of stories related to each. Another extra is the reading of a letter that Green wrote to his manager when he was in Hawaii, explaining his interest in remaining clear of money. Lastly, there are further discussion of his prec=vious bandmates which were left out of the film. I see a lot of film and this one is really top notch with necessary live footage showing the band in performance. I highly recommended this film for anyone with even remote interest in British blues and modern blues roots. Excellent!

Levee Town - Takin' & Givin' - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Takin' & Givin' from Levee Town and it's got flavor. Opening with a country two stepper, title track, Takin' & Givin' shows nice vocal blending between Jacque Garoutte and Brandon Hudspeth who also throws down some cool guitar riffs, backed by Adam Hagerman on drums, Jacque Garoutte on bass & Chris Hazelton on Hammond. High Flyin' Mama is a cool funky rocker with a super bass line by Garoutte. This track is really smoking with hot Hammond work by Hazelton and Hudspeth on guitar. Warm loping blues, Kansas City Woman, features Jaisson Taylor on lead vocal and cool harp work by Jimmie Meade. Mr. Jameson is a cool swing track with fleet fingered guitar work by Hudspeth and cool backing vocals by Garoutte and Hudspeth over a cool walking bass line by Garoutte and slick piano riffs by Walser. Excellent! Walkin' Down The Road is a solid blues track with warm harmonies and clever guitar riffs over tight drum work. Driving blues rocker, You're So Hip, has the loose framework of Hip Shake with a cool boogie beat and solid bass line. Accented by gnarly guitar work and Hazelton on organ, this may be my favorite on the release. With Elmore James like slide riffs by Garoutte, Charlie Brown, has a great feel. Nicely articulated piano solo by Walser and cool harp by Meade gives this track even more texture. Slow blues number, Sunday Afternoon, has a lot of the feel of the early British blues of Clapton and Mayall. Featuring Jaisson Taylor on lead vocal, this track has plenty of room to groove with solos by Hudspeth and Meade. Very nice. Red hot, Letter To My Baby, has solid vocal work and especially nice guitar work by Hudspeth. Cool! Do-Si-Do is an interesting track with an unusual structure but nice roots in the blues. Accented by glistening guitar riffs and warm harp, a very cool track. Wrapping the release is El Grape with a super walking bass line and light fingered guitar work by Hudspeth. A really slick track to wrap a smooth and interesting release.

Mark Crissinger - Night Light - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Night Light, from Mark Crissinger and it spans the blues country rock spectrum. Opening with light blues rocker, Holding My Heart, Crissinger leads the way on guitar and vocal. Joined by Dan Dube on piano, Marty Howe on harp, Jay Stevens on bass and Bill Hicks on drums this is a crisp entry. A soft edged country rocker, Poor Boy Blues, has traces of Skynyrd and Allmans for a certain popular hook. Pat Hook adds some tasty slide guitar work to Crissinger's fluid finger work and Jeff Heisholt warms it up with organ. Title track, Night Light, has an easy shuffle feel with some real nice harp work from Jerome Godboo. Boogie track, Defeated, has a cool edge and some cool flashy guitar work over solid tom tom work for a driving rocker. Rock and roller, The Sunday Blues, really digs in with a solid bottom and cool piano work from Dube. Crissinger pulls out the stops with a real nice Chuck Berry like guitar riff of his own. Very cool. Instrumental, Cedar Shuffle, flies low with Dube, Howe, Stevens, Hicks and Crissinger hitting a smooth groove and a particularly cool steel guitar solo. Wrapping the release is Run, a nicely written ballad with cool bass riffs and some of Crissinger's best vocals on the release, juxtaposed against acoustic and electric soloing.

Jesi-Lu Records artist: Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps - Bonafide - New Release review

I just received the newest release, Bonafide from Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps and it's a rocking blast! Opening with R&B track, I Like It Like That, James leads the way on vocal and over the top piano with super bass work by Terry Wilson, Guitar by Billy Watts and drums by Tony Braunagel. Excellent opener. On Spit It Out, James really hits her stride with Al Green like pace. This track really makes you want to dance with hot vocals and nice horn work by Darnell Leonard and with Mike Finnigan's excellent B3 additions. Funky, Hollywood Way has a super groove with Wilson crafting a nice bass line and real nice slide work by Billy Watts. Backing vocals by Wilson and Watts really add to the richness of this track and James' phrasing is tight! A cool soul track, You Always Pick Me Up, is right down the slot with warm vocals and all of the poise of the queen of soul herself. With a spiritual warmth and the addition of trumpet by Lee Thornburg and sax by Ron Dziubla this track is really nice! Funky rocker, What Happens In Vegas, has the sound of New Orleans fused with a bit of Muscle Soul. Mike Finnigan's piano work, a smoky guitar solo by Wilson and Wilson and Watts' backing vocals really set James vocals on top. Too Big To Fail is another track with that swampy funk and Herman Matthews' drum work and Wilson's guitar work nicely compliment James' soulful vocals. Another great soul track, No Regrets goes even further to show how James is really hitting on all cylinders. With basic backing by Finnigan on organ, Lewis Stephens on Wurlitzer and sassy sax work by Ron Dziubla, this track is smoking! Kicking out the jams, You Want it When You Want It sounds like it was written by Keith Richards. With attitude and style, James crafts a solid rocker and gives it spunk. Wrapping the release is a really nice song, Have a Little Faith In Me, written by John Hiatt. I've always really liked this track and James keeps it light and airy with clear vocals and simple instrumentation. Atmospheric guitar work by Watts, percussive piano by James, Finnigan's organ work and a soulful sax solo by Jerry Peterson makes this a super closer for a really super release.
