Travis Green - A Little Too Late - New release review

I just received the newest release (July 8, 2016), A Little Too Late, from Travis Green and it's quite good. Opening with title track, A Little Too Late, Travis Green on super lead vocals, shows country two step style, with Kid Andersen on guitar, Randy Bermudes on bass, Jason Hansen on drums, and nice key work from Jim Pugh. Cowboy styling on Please Don't Cry has a lot of polish with Lisa Leuschner Andersen on harmony. This is a real nice track that should hit the radio. Everybody Knows crosses over more to a rock sound, still influenced by country flavor. With the line "Everybody Knows That You're A Bitch A Heart" it is an auto hook that will certainly be a crowd favorite. Solid bass work from Bermudes and sassy sax work from Nancy Wright give this track a solid kick. Blues based ballad, The Only Love, has really nice organ work by Pugh giving it a great feel. Kid Andersen lays in some real nice bluesy country guitar riffs for good measure. Very cool. Keep You Off My Mind has a really strong rockin blues beat with a driving bass line. Green takes his vocals to a new level sounding every bit like a 50's country star and Andersen's guitar work is clean and classy. Damage Done is a solid country rock/pop track with memorable lead vocals and with sweet backup vocals from Lisa and Courtney Knott. Andersen's steel playing sets this track off giving it that extra bite. Caroline is one of my favorite tracks on the release with a rockin' boogie beat. Wright's hot sax work, with Pugh's key work and Lisa and Courtney on backup make this a top track. Excellent! Road Runs Cold is another well written track and Green sings within a swampy ambiance. Hansen really creates the spell with his tom tom work and Kid A. lays in shimmery guitar riffs that glisten off of his solid soloing. Excellent! Wrapping the release is Don't Forget, a track with a cool country funk and a touch of gospel. This is a great closer with Green's super vocal phrasing, Pugh's organ work, nice guitar riffs from Kid and Hansen's drum work. Nice closer.

Juke Rockets Blues Band - Hungry Soul - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Hungry Soul, from Juke Rockets Blues Band and they play from the heart. Opening with American Train, a country style rocker, Carlene Thornton leads on vocals with solid drums from Tim Woitowitz, bass from Steve Mellor and guitars from Ron Casillo. On 12 bar number, Can't Complain Blues, Ron leads the way on guitar and Steve pops in a real nice bass solo. JRBB slows the tempo a bit for Cougar, with seductive lyrics, and some of the most ambitious, San Francisco style guitar playing on the release. Title track, Hungry Soul, is a simple ballad with a nice melody, clearly articulated guitar work and nicely blended vocals. Very nice. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Keep On Walkin' with a thumping bass line and real nice grinding slide guitar riffs. It also shows some of Thornton's best vocals on the release. JRBB brings it down real low for Mister 7. Showing guitar chord structure like Mr T Bone Walker over structured bass and drums, Thornton does a real nice job on lead vocal. Heavy bottomed, Sunday Morning, gives Mellor a cool opportunity to walk around on bass. Nicely overdriven guitar riffs by Casillo and lightly salted drum work by Woitowitz gives Thornton plenty of space to belt out the blues. The opener on classic, Summertime, gives Casillo the opportunity to show his best work on the release with super clarity and trem bends. I hear influences from the SF sound on Thornton but she is by no means copying Pearl so definite kudos for individuality. Funky, When I'm Good, is loose but cool. A bit of a jam and some nice vocals harmonies make this track stand out. Wrapping the release is ballad, We Threw Love Away, has a solid melody and consistent radio quality. A nice closer for a cool release.

Underworld Indie Records artist: Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat - Live at the Kessler - New release review

I just received the newest release, Live at the Kessler, from Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat and it's really fun. Opening with I Declare, Suhler gets the crowd warmed up on lead vocal with excellent piano support from Shawn Phares, Chris Alexander on bass and Beau Chadwell on drums. Suhler has a great voice and great tone. On swampy, Across the Brazos, Chadwell's snappy drum beat and accordion like key work by Phares add extra flavor. Rock n' Roller, Doin' The Best I Can, is a hard driver with Suhler showing his super slide technique. This is a great cranker and Suhler presses on with strong support by Phares on keys. Excellent! Tijuana Bible has a real nice thumping bass line and grinding guitar riffs. With it's memorable melody and ZZ Top like feel, this track is hot! Deja Blue has a cool tandem vocal/lead guitar melody with accordion keys giving it a cajun feel. Single note bass line and steady drum lines gives the track a simple structure accenting Suhler's easy slung lead slide work. Very nice. Texassippi has a real nice southern country feel with really supple vocals and acoustic slide work. Sunday Drunk is a great rocker with a relentless bass line. Suhler stretches his strings quite nicely giving the track real bite. Devil In Me opens with a cool drum solo from Chadwell joined by Suhler on slide. Heavy toms and solid bottom is the key to this track with it's slight country taste. Suhler really lets it loose on this one with some slick slide riffs. Excellent! Panther Burn is a heavy lumbering track ... kind of a southern version of Levee Breaks. Alexander and Suhler on vocal with Suhler's slide work and solid drums really gives this track oomph. Scattergun is a really cool shuffle with lead slide. A pure blues number with boss bass lines, this track is great. Suhler and Phares really air it out here for one of the best tracks on the release. Po' Lightnin' has a cool funky beat and with nice lead bass lines and almost spoken lyrics. Prayin' For Rain, built over arpeggios on a theme, is a really sweet ballad. Wrapping the release is Restless Soul, a pure rockin' boogie. If this doesn't get you moving, nothing will. With plenty of slide work this track morphs into a driving version of Bullfrog blues and raw rowdy sliding blues. Excellent closer!

Delmark Records artist: Omar Coleman Band - Live At Rosa's Lounge - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Live At Rosa's Lounge, from Omar Coleman Band and it's quite good. Hot on the heels of his super 2015 release, Born & Raised , Coleman has put out a dynamic live release flexing his power.
Opening with Guy/Wells composition, Snatch It Back And Hold It, with some pure soul on vocal Omar leads the way over a great bass line from Dave Forte. Neal O'Hara takes a nice organ solo, with Marty Binder on drums and Omar wraps it up with harp. Cool opener. On Willie Dixon's, I'm Ready, OCB stays the course of Morganfield, adding a real nice piano solo by O'Hara. On funky, Born and Raised, Coleman gets a great James Brown feel going with wah wah and Preston style organ. His vocals are nicely crafted and delivered. This track has some really nice harp soloing as well and a hot guitar solo by Pete Galanis. Very cool. Rocker, Slow Down Baby, has solid drive and Chuch Berry like guitar riffs by Galanis and hot piano riffs from O'Hara. Sit Down Baby/Jody's Got Your Girl And Gone is ultra funky and Omar is running the show. A cool organ solo by O'Hara gives the track a hot side and Coleman's harp work wraps the track. Cool. Easy jazz swinger, Raspberry Wine, has old school roots and vocals but with tight bass lines by Ari Seder and drum work by Binder and a smooth organ solo by O'Hara has a great groove. High stepping, Lucky Man, gives Galanis a wide open range to rip the guitar and he steps up to the plate nicely. Omar's vocal/ harp exchange is relentless making this track one of my favorites on the release. Deep soul track, One Request, showcases Coleman's vocals nicely and Galanis steps in with a particularly nice blues solo capping off the track. Very nice! Rufus Thomas' Give Me The Green Light has a strong funk pushed nicely by the funky rhythm of Galanis, O'Hara and Seder. Seder's bass lines on this track are reall funky and Coleman really hits the groove. Wrapping the release is Willie Dixon's Two Headed Woman with a bit of country flavor. Galanis even throws down country guitar riffs before turning back to a more traditional Morganfield "Mojo" feel. Nice closer to a hot live release.

Bing Futch - Unresolved Blues - New release review

I just received the newest release, Unresolved Blues, from Bing Futch and it's a freewheeling acoustic ride. In 2015, he became the first mountain dulcimer player in the history of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis to advance to the semifinals and in 2016, he advanced to the finals, winning the "Best Guitarist" award. Opening with Robert Johnson's Sweet Home Chicago, Futch brings a solid boogie woogie beat with organ, percussion and bass support under solid vocals. Interstate 10 Blues has a really cool feel with Futch's vocals over a mountain dulcimer. Very nice. Juke Joint Hen has a mountain bluegrass sound with excellent finger work on his dulcimer. A reel like instrumental, this track is super. Harperville is played on resonator dulcimer giving it a metallic overtone on the dulcimer. Solid vocals and firm string work give this track authentic roots. Drinkin' and Drivin' Blues is smooth and slow. Nicely phrased blues solo on dulcimer make this one of my favorites. Tampa Red's It's Tight Like That has a great feel with nice slide resonator work. A terrific track as written, this track flies. Title track, Unresolved Blues, is a blues rocker with polished vocals, a full band sound and electric guitar solos. Nice acoustic blues, The Flip Side, is about as stripped down as it gets with warm solo vocal and acoustic accompaniment. Very nice. Traditional track, John Henry, is a really nicely executed acoustical instrumental. Excellent! That's What You Done To Me, has a cool blues drag with electric underlayment and Futch taking the melody on vocal. His string technique throughout is solid if not spectacular. Wrapping the release is Red-Headed Lover, an easy paced shuffle track. With a clean guitar lead and simple backing, Futch delivers vocally for a nice conclusion to a different take on the blues.

Danny Marks - Cities In Blue - New release review

I just received the newest release, Cities In Blue, by Danny Marks and he covers a lot of blues territory from coast to coast. Opening with a super T-Bone Walker style track, Houston to L.A. Danny Marks handles vocals and displays his strong capability to swing that guitar. Very nice! Belt Line Blues has a rural country style with Al Cross on drums, Danny Marks on slide and Johathan Goldsmith on keys. Once I Was Crazy has a great period feel highlighted by strong riffs from Chris Whiteley on trumpet and Ken Whiteley on Banjo. Very cool. Swing track, Kansas City Shout, has a real nice piano line by Julian Fauth and Marks with Alec Fraser on vocal backed by Mike Wark on sax is super. I'm particularly attracted by the guitar intro on Memphis Got Soul which has nice Albert king blues influence and the solid bari sax work by Phil Skladowski gives it that Memphis horn sound. With a light springy rag style, Heading Down To New Orleans, strongly features Marks' vocals and nicely blended vocal backing. Blues Came To Chicago features David Rotundo on harp and Bucky Berger on drums. Going Down The Road maintains it's revival feel but with mandolin and percussion has more of a primitive feel. Chris Whiteley on harp and Chris and Ken on backing vocals does give it a honest sound. Hey, New York Town has a more modern sound with contemporary guitar playing, organ work by Jonathan Goldsmith, beat by Piltch, hip hop style vocal phrasing by Marks and backing vocals by Sherie Marshall. Land Where Blues Began has a very raw instrumental style with Marks on slide guitar, Marks on acoustic, Al Cross on light percussion and Fraser and Marshall on backing vocal. Wrapping the release is Lights Out, a slick jazzy instrumental number with an almost a beach feel but holding onto the blues, Otis Rush style. Possibly my favorite track on the release and a super closer.

Stony Plain Records artist: Eric Bibb and North County Far with Danny Thompson - The Happiest Man In The World - New release Review

I just received the newest release, The Happiest Man In The World, from Eric Bibb and North County Far with Danny Thompson and it's quite fun. Opening with title track, The Happiest Man In The World, Eric Bibb creates his upbeat blues style with a rural flair joined by Danny Thompson on upright bass, Ollie Haavisto on slide guitars and Janne Haavisto on drums and percussion. Toolin' Down The Road is a really cool track with a nice weave of acoustic instruments bringing instant comparison in my mind to early Ry Cooder work. Very nice. I'll Farm For You has a cool little guitar riff and Bibbs superb vocals supported by light but intriguing slide work. Tossin' And Turnin' has a real smooth feel a nice blend of acoustic and resonator guitar work and upright bass and features Petri Hakala on fiddle. Creole Cafe' has a real nice 3/4 time making it one of my favorite tracks on the release. Bibb really has a nice voice and with lightly appointed mando work, this track is super. With a light funk, Born To Be Your Man, has a bit more drum and jazzy instrumentation giving it a fuller sound. Prison Of Time is a really strong ballad with a lightly salted Hawaiian feel. King Size Bed has a Piedmont style and a happy go lucky feel. With light percussion, a cool mandolin solo and nice slide, another favorite on the release. 1912 Skiing Disaster is a nicely textured instrumental. With it's solid melody and beautiful bass lines by Thompson, balanced against Bibb's acoustic guitar and Olli on slide this track is excellent! Wish I Could Hold You Now is a solemn ballad featuring Petri's mando and Olli on slide providing a beautiful canvas for Bibb's extremely sensitive vocals. Instrumental, Blueberry Boy, is very nicely crafted, again showing superb bass lines, articulate guitar work and a cool Irish whistle solo by Mary Murphy. Wrapping the release is Ray Davies' You Really Got Me. One of my all time favorite rock tracks, Bibb gives it a sensitivity that I suspect never entered Davies head when he was writing it. Pepe Ahlquist on harp and Michael Jerome Browne add nicely to this total blowout of this classic rock track (with a surprise country blues acoustic guitar finish). Very nice closer.

Jim Zeller - Circus - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Circus, from Jim Zeller, and it's a rock stew. Opening with Down To The River, a kind of bolero rocker with a taste of Midnight Rider and French Cafe twist on Old Man River, this release will keep you guessing. Wild Life has a more metal feel with vocal echo but with synthesized accordion sounds giving it a more euro sound. With Freddy Freedom and Jean Millaire on guitar, David Devine on drums and Marc Deschenes on bass, a nice harp solo sets it off. A light rocker, Bad Girl, has an interesting sound with harp and a jazzy beat. Possibly my favorite track on the release, overdriven guitar rhythm is very cool as is the howl of the harp and Richard Beamder on sax. Ballad, Ain't So Bad has a solid melody with traces of the Kinks and smooth harp work. Driving rocker with traces of All Along The Watchtower, Halloween in Hollywood With Johnny Depp is a cool track with some hints of Spanish guitar and cool guitar riffs. One Step Closer To Vegas has a Tex Mex/Jimmy Buffet mix feel. An appealing radio track, this is nicely written and performed. This Time stays the course with straight forward pop style track, complimented nicely by harp and interesting percussion work. Demetri Bel Alexandre adds some nicely crafted slide work giving the track additional texture. Sweet Nanoo is a cool shuffle track with classic blues rock guitar riffs a real nice harp blowout. Midnight Train is as pure a radio track as you are going to hear. Nicely done. Wrapping the release is Soul Of The Moon with a catchy melody and mellow backing.

Rude Mood Records artist: Diana Rein - Long Road - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Long Road, from Diana Rein, and it's got strong commercial potential. Opening with title track, Long Road, Diana Rein shows real clarity in vocal performance on a well written ballad with ultra clean Fender guitar work. Very nice! Wild One has a thumping bottom and strong rock bones. A driving rhythm guitar line and aggressive lead guitar work gives this track real sting. Livin' Loud has a slinky feel warming up to a guitar infused rock break. Cool. Green Light has a power pop feel with a springy 3 chord drive under blues lead. Rebel With A Cause opens with a Latin flare but breaks down to a heavy footed rocker. A solid radio style track with modest guitar riffs keeps it simple. The Real Thing has a nice fat Fender guitar sound with with nicely written melody lines. Breakout guitar work on this track gives it another dimension but still staying mostly in the power pop area. Nice. Done Me Dirty, another strong radio entry has some stinging guitar riffs breaking the pop infused lyrics. Don't Walk Away is a sweet ballad written over a basic arpeggio. There is a real nice guitar solo on the track giving it a broader feel and Rein's vocals are strong, balancing her guitar work. Come Back Home has a well written melody and Rein's vocals are pushed nicely by a more powerful guitar solo giving it a bit more rock weight. Wicked is a real nice blues ballad with a rich guitar guitar intro. Backing down and allowing her vocals carry the load, Rein gives the track real cross radio airplay opportunities, before coming back with her most adventurous guitar work to this point, venturing into Big Brother territory. Very nice. Down, Down, Down opens with a primitive blues feel but kicks into power pop mode with driving drums and vibrant guitar riffs. My favorite track on the release is the closer, Peace, a really nicely written instrumental ballad for electric guitar. Clean tones through what sounds like a nice tube Super and sparks of jazzy guitar riffs gives this track true sparkle. Very nice closer to a strong vocal entry.

Nerus Records artist: The Hitman Blues Band - The World Moves On - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, The World Moves On, from The Hitman Blues Band, and it's a lot of fun. Opening with Bad, Bad Man, The Hitman Blues Band stomps onto the scene with a real cool rocker. Led by Russell "Hitman" Alexander, this band has a great swagger with Hitman's strong vocal attack and slide guitar work, firmly backed by Kevin Bents on piano and organ, Mike Porter on bass and Guy LaFountaine on drums. That's What It's Like To Be A Man is a cool boogie track with a cool driving bass line from Glassman and great slide work from Hitman. Very cool! Rocker, Don't You Tempt Me, has a modern blues rock beat. Hitman really delivers on vocals and horn backing by Mikey Vitale on tenor and Nick Clifford on bari give the track full traction. Moving On reminds me quite a bit of I've been Down So Long By The Doors. Another gem, this track not only features super slide work from Hitman, Clifford and Vitale on sax but nice organ work from Kevin Bents on piano and Guy LaFountaine on drums. Two Minute Warning has an easy, Steeley Dan jazz rock feel with easy rhythm guitar, nicely stylized guitar solos and solid sax work from Vitale and Clifford. The World Moves On is a solid radio track with a classic sax solo from Vitale. Neil Alexander leads off Two Trains Running on harp and Mike Porters bass line holds down the beat under Clifford and Vitale on sax and Kevin Bents on keys. Another cool sax solo on this track gives it a poke in the arm and a double stop riddled guitar solo leading into a nice piano riff. Johnny Gale takes off on a nice bass solo supported by Bernard Purdie on drums. Very cool. Catch-22 Blues has a laid back feel with light drum work by Bernard Purdie under excellent sax work and cool lead vocals, Bobby Forrester on keys and stylized guitar lead by Hitman. Ray Alexander sets in some really nice vibes for a different feel altogether and this Charles Brown styled track sets a nice pace. Ballad, Angel In The Shadows features Richard Crooks on drums, Seth Glassman on bass, Murray Weinstock on piano and Kevin Rymer on organ. I really hear a lot of similarity to Donald Fagen on delivery and vocal timbre. Radio bound. Rock n Roller, Jenny Goodbye, has a strong boogie woogie beat and power horn saxs. Hitman slips in some real nice slide work but it's the sax solos by Michael Snyder that nails this one. Hitman brings the lights down low for I'm All About You with only piano and his vocals on the intro. Slowly building this soulful ballad with real nice piano work by Bents and cool guitar and horn accents give this track a great feel. Vitale rips out a great solo on this one and backing vocals by Joanna Alexander and Nancy Hampton really help to give this track a spiritual feel. Excellent! Wrapping the release is Willie Dixon's Hoochie Coochie Man and you've likely not heard it done like this. A flat out boogie done LaGrange style, this track is laying down flames. Vitale is up first with a smoking sax solo cushioned by Bents on organ. Clifford doesn't let any grass grow under his feet either with a sky high bari sax solo that will set you back in your chair. Porter's bass line and LaFontaine's drums keep this train on the track and Hitman has the phrasing just right. Bents takes a real nice electric piano solo leading up to a smoking hot guitar closer by Hitman. Excellent closer to a real strong release!

Michael Benjamin artist: Alabama Mike - Upset The Status Quo - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Upset The Status Quo, from Alabama Mike, and it's a cool groove. Blending R&B, Blues and funk, Mike has put together a fine set here. Opening with title track, Upset The Statue Quo, a bluesy shuffle, Mike leads the way on vocal joined by Aki Kumar on harp, Bernard Anderson on sax, Kid Andersen and Bob Welsh on guitar, Kedar Roy on bass and D'Mar Martin on drums, this track is a great start. Identity Theft opens with a a cool bass line from Jerry Jemmott this track and an overall R&B feel which is quite cool. B3 punctuation, backing vocals by Loralee Christansen and Lisa Leuschner and a hot sax solo by Anderson tops the track off nicely. Low slung blues number, MISSISSIPPI is a great track with a serious lope and Kumar doing some fine work on harp and a nice piano solo from Bob Welsh. Funky number, Think, also shows the strong bass work of Jemmott and features nice B3, Anderson on sax as well as a hot guitar solo from Kid Andersen and piano from Welsh. Very cool. Can't Stay Here Long is a really super track, possibly my favorite on the release, featuring Mike's most soulful vocals on the release. With a gospel feel, Fight For Your Love, makes you just want to jump. There's nice piano work by Welsh, cool B3 work by Jim Pugh, slide guitar work by Jon Lawton and Ronnie Smith lays down a snappy drum line. Restraining Order again has a heavy bass line by Jemmott, with sweet backing vocals by Loralee and Lisa. Nicely interwoven instrumental support on sax, organ and drums gives this track a really super radio style. Rock Me In Your Arms has a traditional R&B feel with an almost Van Morrison vocal style. Sax, guitar and drums carry the body of the vocal accompaniment with nice bass lines by Kedar Roy. Very nice. SSI Blues has a "Walking Blues" feel with Kumar on harp, Lawton on slide and Roy on bass. Another strong R&B style entry, Somewhere Down The Line, is particularly melodic and seductive. With it's club feel cool slide work by Lawton and sassy sax work by Anderson, this is another release favorite. Wrapping the release is God Is With You (Benediction), a very strong R&B track with screaming hot sax work from Anderson. Jemmott's ever present bass line is distinctive and warm and with Pugh on B3, Welsh on piano and nicely placed backing vocals, this is a terrific finish to a really fine release.

Blues Root Productions artist: Debbie Bond - Enjoy The Ride - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the newest release, Enjoy The Ride, from Debbie Bond, and it is a soulful grouping of radio styled tracks. Opening with title track, Enjoy The Ride, Bonds leads the way on vocal backed by serious heat by Rachel and Carla Edwards. Will McFarlane lays in some real nice slide guitar and Dave Crenshaw really plays some super percussion. Easy jazz rocker, Rainbow, has a pleasant melody and solid rhythm. R&B track, Love Vibration, with Rachel and Carla backing Bonds shows some of the best vocals on the release and featuring Spooner Oldham on B3. Left Me In The Dark has a cool Latin influenced rhythm and features a sassy guitar solo by Bonds. R&B track, Find A Way, has great bones with hot horn work from Brad Guin and sassy vocals from Bond. Possibly my favorite track on the release. I Am The Blues has super backing vocals by Rachel and Carla and cool harp backing to the lead vocals by Bond. Warm organ and nice sax work and clean horn work give Humble Pie a cool feel with a slightly funky bottom. New Orleans style piano work by Bonds supplemented by light harp gives Wishbone a cool structure for some of the most clever lyrics on the release. McFarlane's slide work on Remedy gives it a real warm feel and nicely blended vocals by Bond, Carla and Rachel give this track a cool hook. Another solid radio track, Start With Love, shows a great hook with a sweet melody. Wrapping the release is Train Song, with "Radiator" Rick on harp, and with Rachel and Carla's backing vocals has many of the traits of a primitive blues holler. Super finish to this solid release.

BILL KIRCHEN & AUDIE DE LONE - listen to their Merle Haggard tribute now; new album out 8/26

BILL KIRCHEN & AUSTIN DE LONE
Transatlanticana

New Studio Album Unites the Titan of the Telecaster with the Godfather of Pub Rock
Recorded in Austin, TX and London, UK with an all star cast
Tour and festival dates announced including Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2016
(August 26, 2016; Red House Records)

Bill Kirchen and Austin de Lone team up for a hands-across-the-Atlantic collection with their new studio album, Transatlanticana, out on August 26, 2016 on Red House Records. This long-overdue release unites the pioneers of two major musical movements: Kirchen co-founded the original “Americana” band, Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, and his trademark Telecaster licks drove their hit “Hot Rod Lincoln” into the Top 10 in 1972. De Lone dropped out of Harvard to start Eggs Over Easy, moving to London and recording with Jimi Hendrix’s producer/manager and The Animals’ bass player Chas Chandler in 1970. The Eggs are the progenitors of British pub rock, the first link in the chain to punk rock, new wave and beyond. Backed by both their all-star British and American bands, Transatlanticana finds Kirchen and de Lone trading songwriting credits and lead vocals on this soulful and rocking collection. They kick it off with the timely “Hounds of the Bakersfield,” a tribute to the late Merle Haggard and the Bakersfield, CA sound.

Kirchen and de Lone cut the album in Austin and London, capturing on disc the best of their 30-year collaboration. Kirchen is Austin-based; de Lone is in the San Francisco Bay Area, but both artists have longtime ties with the UK scene: Kirchen has toured as a guitarist with Nick Lowe and put out three albums on UK label Proper Records; de Lone has toured as keyboard player for Lowe and Elvis Costello and put out his first solo album on UK label Demon Records.

They first collaborated in the mid-1970s, writing together as The Moonlighters: “We sent Nick Lowe a bunch of songs for Rockpile, but unbeknownst to us they had decided to break up,” Kirchen says. What de Lone got back was a letter from Lowe that began, “Dear hero o’ mine. There’s not many of us left…” Lowe then offered to produce them in London, and the resulting Moonlighters album, Rush Hour, came out in 1983 on the Edsel label. Since then, Bill and Austin have teamed up with with Lowe and Costello many times: de Lone has worked with Lowe, Paul Carrack and Costello on several tours and Kirchen held the guitar chair for Lowe’s critically acclaimed Impossible Bird disc and tour. In 2008, Costello borrowed the title cut from Kirchen’s album Hammer Of The Honky-Tonk Gods for his band name at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco featuring de Lone, Kirchen, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welsh and Jim Lauderdale.

The songs of Transatlanticana represent the core elements of Americana music – R&B, country, rock and even a gospel track. Butch Hancock duets his song “Oxblood” with Kirchen. It’s a meaty slice of Texas boogie recorded with the Austin contingent. “I guess they used to color concrete with ox blood; I thought it was just an old shoe polish color” says Kirchen.

Kirchen contributes “Wine, Wine, Wine”, quintessential Commander Cody, straight-up country sad from their first sessions in Ann Arbor ’67. (Fun fact: Bill and Iggy Pop graduated same year, same class from Ann Arbor High School.)

“Let’s Rock” is a vintage de Lone/Kirchen co-write featuring an easy, chugging groove and de Lone’s tasteful piano work.

“Somebody’s Goin’ Home” is a Blackie Farrell/Kirchen co-write. “I saw the Staple Singers for the first time in 1964 at the Newport Folk Festival, then had to wait 50 years ’til I saw Mavis again, when we both performed at the Salmon Arms Fest in Canada,” Kirchen recalls.  “It is a nod to that great family, written as a gospel song without ‘The Gospel.’ ” It's also a poignant look at the certainty and mysteries of loss, in true gospel style.

De Lone contributes “Warm and Tender Love,” a track that showcases his deep love and understanding of rhythm and blues. “I loved all the great Memphis soul ballads, and all the fantastic singing that Percy Sledge did, so simple and so sweet.” It’s an understated, soulful vocal performance, intimate and personal.

“Already Walking” is a bittersweet pop song written by de Lone and his daughter Caroline de Lone, who sings harmony on the track’s catchy chorus. It’s about moving on and dealing with hard times, being “on the way back” from a loss.

Their ringing, rockified version of Bob Dylan’s “The Times They are A-Changin’” closes down the album with a bang -- it’s an anthemic, fresh take on a song you’ve heard a thousand times and somehow these guys infuse it with a singular power that comes from crazy talent, years spent playing together and a deep love of Dylan.

Kirchen: “I first saw him [Dylan] at my high school in Ann Arbor in ’63, then Newport Folk Festival in ’64 where he debuted "Mr. Tambourine Man." I went to Newport the next year and saw him ‘go electric’. I loved it. What I saw those two years at Newport, and all the wild music that came through Ann Arbor and Detroit pretty much ruined me for normal work.”

Spirited and served up with wit and humor, Transatlanticana is a gem –- a ringside seat to these transatlantic sessions by a group of like-minded, top-of-their-game players enjoying each other’s musical company.  For tour dates and more info go to http://www.billkirchen.com.
