I just received the newest release, Hurricane Unleashed, from Bobby "Hurricane" Spencer and he unleashes his hurricane of funky horn work on you. Opening with Gotta Get Back to Chicago, a blend of funk, jazz and blues, Spencer lets the juice flow on vocal and tenor sax. Andrea Balestra on guitar adds some funky rhythm and Mo Beeks rides under the track on keys. On You're All I Need, a slower R&B style track, Spencer has a more serious radio style in mind. Camarillo has a real nice swing blues feel (a la Kansas City Blues) and Spencer lays down some rich vocal leads. A real cool track Matias Alvear Fall on bass and Dario Benzoni on drums keep it tight. Lester Lands opens the track on guitar with a standard 12 blues riff. Dueling instrumentally with Spencer on sax this is a pretty cool jam. Lovers Hill is a R&B style pop track with warm vocal lead and backing by Kelly Chappue. Little Mama is a sassy strut with King Curtis like sax riffs. A very cool track. On soulful, You Make Me Crazy, Spencer really digs deep with his horn. A solid melody and nice backing vocals by Chappue with great horn work from Spencer makes this another cross channel radio target. Grover Washington's Mr. Magic gets a real nice punch from Fall on bass and Balestra on guitar but it's Hurricane that really takes this track for a ride. Very nice! Soul track I Got The Blues features rich vocals from Spencer over a bed of Beeks electric keyboard riffs and very melodic sax soloing by Spencer. Big Maybelle gets a real nice New Orleans feel with Benzoni leading the way on snare. Fall lays down a nice bass line and Spencer is tops on vocal and sax. Very nice! Holler'n and Wallow'n has a real cool groove with a funky bass line. This Jr Walker like track really hits the spot. Wrapping the release is Call Your Dogs Off with another taste of New Orleans. This springy track with crisp sax riffs is a great finish to a tasty release.

Sauce Boss - 100% Pure - New Release Review
I just received the newest release, 100% Pure, from Sauce Boss and it's one man blast! Opening with Zipper Bird, a rowdy blues rant with Bill "Sauce Boss" Wharton on vocal, percussion and fat groove saturated slide guitar riffs. Marquis De Swamp has a really cool melody with a swampy feel and sophisticated guitar work done in a somewhat primitive manner. The Boss is have a good time with this track but I like it's composition. Super! Gonna Be Alright is a Latin rhythm track with just a simple pop melody. Chains opens with some real fat electric resonator slide work. With guttural singing and voracious slide guitar work this is another real cool track. Delta 9 Blues is a deep blues track again with a strong dose of swamp. I particularly like Boss' vocal style and slide playing on this track. It raw and real. Excellent! Peckerwood has a bit of a country flavor. With it's quick pace and more percussive picked guitar work, this has a definite rural feel. Boss does cut loose with a real nice slide solo on this track and it's wide open. Chicago Combat Zone has a definite blues feel but with more country style picking. Telling the story of his own life in Chicago as a child Boss gets a great electric hollow body metal resonator sound. Cadillac Of A Woman has strong country roots. As much a country ballad as anything, Boss does lay down some real nice lightly amplified acoustic resonator slide work. Hey Wilbur is just a bit of fun and foolishness with backing vocals and muted picking. Sun is a happy go lucky track, again with the smell of back roads and hay. Song Of The Irish Band is a somber acoustic ballad sounding like a mix of Tom Waits and Bruce Springstein. Wrapping the release is Outlaw Blues opens with a pretty heavy guitar riff that actually reminds me of Deep Purple... dig that! A cool blues rocker, this is a great track to close the release. There's no holding back on slide on this track... very cool!

Josh Hoyer & The Shadowboxers CD out on January 13th
Be healed, be loved and come groove with Josh Hoyer
& The Shadowboxers
New Release, Living By The Minute,
out on January 13, 2015
It’s a TKO, a musical turnabout but more so; a funky,
soulful masterpiece waiting to punch out the lights
Atlanta, GA - Silver Street Records Recording artist, Josh
Hoyer & The Shadowboxers get into the groove with their forthcoming CD,
Living By The Minute a mix of soul, jazz and blues, set to be
released on January 13, 2015. This album was produced by Josh Hoyer and
engineered by Ben Brodin at ARC Studios in Omaha, NE. The band set up live to
record and within a few days, they pounded out songs sounding fresh, spontaneous
and vibrant.
This vibrancy comes from Josh’s songs about love, loss,
social awareness and that there is hope for all of us. He wants to empower and
leave the listener craving for more. His travels around the country in a van
back in his early 20’s with his dog, educated him in the world, focusing on
people and community coming together as one. He left home in Nebraska as a young
man, traveled all the way to the Northwest to turn around a few years later and
landed in New Orleans where he became smitten with the Crescent City. That town
turned his ears upside down his heart inside out and he found his calling. Soul
music called and he answered back with song.
"It is our mission at
Shadowboxer shows to empower the listener. We believe in the power of Soul music
and realize that if we all come together in a room and let every ounce our heart
and soul come through those loud speakers that we can really change the dynamic
of a community. We are all about exchanging SOUL with the PEOPLE!" – Josh
Hoyer
Josh is an accomplished musician who can play piano, organ,
clavinet, saxophone and has one deep resonating voice recalling the greats; Ray
Charles, Otis Redding and of course, JB – James Brown. Formally taught at an
early age, it was the jazz sounds of Miles Davis and John Coltrane that really
lit the fire under him to expand his musical horizons. The philosophy and
spiritual approach of Coltrane’s compositions wowed him. “Miles taught me that
space is almost more important than notes...music is what happens between the
notes,” Josh explains, about when he hears Mr. Davis’ music and after read his
autobiography, “Kind of Blue”. So he learned how to be patient with the song,
let it breathe even if it was left on the sideline for a long
time.
Since forming in 2012, Josh Hoyer and The Shadowboxers have
been a city wide success story. The fans are lining up to hear them as the media
are lining up interview appointments. They won The 2013 Omaha Entertainment
Winner (OEA which stands for Omaha Entertainment and Arts) for Soul Artist of
the Year, then Josh was nominated for a Blues Blast Magazine award this past
fall, for best new artist so the future is looking brighter every day for this
group.
As the album opens up, the band bounces right into the beat,
“Living By The Minute”, talking about life’s struggles, of living check to check
and trying make it all work. The art of seduction comes alive with “A Man Who
Believes His Own Lies” as the girl gets hurt and Josh sings about how he can be
a better man than that. He’s quite convincing as he sings with the female voices
supporting him, the chorus, “What can you do with a man who believes in his own
lies?” The songs “Misfit Children” and “Over The City” talks about our social
inequality and how in the verses he sings about the plight of one to the
success of the other and how we are turning a blind eye. His work with the
Center Pointe homeless outreach program in Lincoln gave him the raw emotions to
write such songs from a new angle.
“I write about what I think about and see in the world;
not all of that is happy,” he laughs. “But the groove is.” – Josh Hoyer
in a Hear Nebraska article
The “First One” is a true Otis Redding serenade, in all
matters of the song. The structure, the instrumentation and Josh’s crying tenor
voice. Throw in a King Curtis type saxophone solo and this has the elements of
being a showstopper at live shows. He grabs the listener by the throat for he’s
begging and pleading like Otis did in “Try A Little Tenderness”, the vocal tags
and the staggering horns just pull it together gently.
“More than anything it was the vibe (soul music), the
sound of it,” Hoyer said. “As far as doing good deeds and doing good work in the
world, that’s from my dad. I think you have your immediate heroes in the world
you live in, and your music can be a soundtrack to it.” – Josh Hoyer in a
Hear Nebraska article
The Shadowboxers are a living, breathing group of solid
players with guitars, brass horns, and the bottom end with the drums and bass.
The band rocks the boat and then steadies the wheel to give Josh what he needs
for his melodies and voice to shine through. Several of the members are well
established cats, like Benny Kushner on guitar who toured internationally with
The Millions and The Mezcal Brothers who were once signed to a major record
label. Drummer Justin G. Jones has played with Billy Bacon and Stone River Boys
(Dave Gonzalez- Paladins) while 19 year old bass player Joshua Bargar is a
phemon carrying the bottom end. The horn players, consisting of Mike Dee on
Saxophone and Tommy Van Den Berg on Trombone are the icing on the cake, while
they blow and wail around Josh’s vocals. They aren’t kidding around.
Josh has reached that platform of performance greatness that
has been living inside him, and now he’s ready to throw the first punch at you,
the listener.
American Showplace Music artist: Bruce Katz Band - Homecoming - New release review
I just received the newest release, Homecoming, from Bruce Katz Band. Opening with title track instrumental, Homecoming, Katz and band mates Ralph Rosen (drums) and Chris Vitarello (guitar) ride an easy opening jam. Nice lap steel work from Jimmy Bennett mixed with the multiple key textures from Katz make this a great opener. Up next is King of Decatur, a funky New Orleans style track with Randy Ciarlante on drums and lead vocals. Katz shows his mastery of the style on electric keys and Bennett and Vitarello show their swampy chops. Santa Fe Blues features John Hammond on lead vocal and Katz really tickles the keys with a bright approach to a classic style period blues track. On shuffle track, No Brainer, the band really gets into a nice groove. Vitarello lays out some really swinging guitar riffs and Katz handles the B3 like it's a part of him. Excellent! Amelia opens with Katz on electric piano and Peter Bennett on bass and Rosen on drums finding a jazz overlay on a New Orleans sound. Wild About You features Jimmy Bennett on vocal and slide on this Elmore James like track. This is a great blues groove with super piano work from Katz. The Czar has a cool, laid back swing featuring open organ work from Katz, a guitar rumble from Bennett and Randy Ciarlante on drums. Nice! Blues Before Sunrise features John Hammond on vocal and guitar and some of the best piano work on the release by Katz. I really love this piano style with great blues feel. Time Flies and a cool jazz instrumental with excellent exchange between the musicians, Katz, Vitarello and Rosen. Smokin! The Sky's The Limit is a lagging shuffle with a great feel. Vitarello holds down the vocal lead nicely as he and Katz trade swinging riffs. On fusion track, Just An Expression, Katz, Vitarello and Rosen really take you for a ride not only with a great rhythm but excellent musicianship. Very cool! Won't Last Till Tuesday is a slower paced bluesy fusion track with complex rhythms. possibly one of my favorite tracks on the release, Katz takes the first solo leg laying down a leading path. Vitarello picks up the baton and carries it high with well articulated guitar riffs of his own punched by Ciarlante on drums. Wrapping the release is It's A Bad Time, in 3/4 time and featuring Bennett on guitar and lead vocal. Katz on B3 and Rosen on drums round out the track making an interesting com=nclusion to a pretty cool release.

No Refund Band - Current State Of Blue - New Release Review
I just received the newest release, Current State Of Blue from No Refund Band and it's quite good. Opening with Buy The Blues, a cool loper, Ricky Jackson is back with serious thick vocals backed by a hot horn section of Jim Brady on trumpet, Anthony Terry on sax, Paul English on trumpet, Kelly Dean on alto sax and Warren Sneed on tenor sax. His own lead guitar work spanks and I particularly like the bass work of Rik Robertson. Smooth swinger and title track, Current State Of Blue, is laid back with cool nice piano work from Randy Wall and again cool trumpet accents from English and Brady as well as a nice sax solo from Terry. On high stepping St. Louis Bound, Travis Doyle joins on B3 and Tyson Sheth on drums. Soul ballad Favorite Fool has a real nice melody and should easily grab broad airplay. Latin influenced, Love Unmade, nicely features Brady and Terry to accent the flavor and blending vocals of Jackson, Robertson, Brady and Terry as well as a crisp Spanish style guitar solo really make this track stand out. Mike Burch on drums as well as Sheth on percussion really get into the groove and Jackson hits Santana mode on electric guitar for one of his solos. Very nice! On one of Eric Clapton's more prominent tracks from the Layla release, Bell Bottom Blues, this band puts a more soulful spin making it sound quite fresh. Super! Jackson lays down a really nice guitar solo which does not mimic Clapton and Terry also kicks in a soulful sax solo. Well done! Mountain's Mississippi Queen is well done but taking on a monster rock track like that and trying to make it new is almost like redoing Black Dog. Totally enjoyable. Shuffle track, I Gotta Play, has a real nice feel and I particularly like Jackson's guitar tone on this track. Brady steps up with a bright trumpet solo and Terry isn't far behind wowing you with his sax. Smokin. Funky track, Bought and Sold, sets a nice groove and cool guitar effects give the track extra punch. Again Brady steps forward delivering on trumpet. Nice groove! Blues Man Dying features Walter Cross on drums and I really like his feel. Jackson almost crosses into country guitar riffs on this bluesy rocker and Randy Wall adds some nice piano texture. Gary Moore's signature track, Still Got The Blues, lends itself really nicely to Jackson's voice. His guitar work is extra tasty and this track is really smokey. This is a really nice rendition of a track which has been overdone but these guys definitely made it worth the listen. Wrapping the release is ultra funky, She Take Me, with a punchy horn section. This track will force you up onto your feet to do the James Brown. Cool wrap up for a super release.

The Golden Novak Band - Self Titled - New Release Review
I just received the newest self titled release from The Golden Novak Band, made up of Brian Golden on guitar and vocal, Jess Novak on vocal, guitar and violin, Nick Andrews on drums, Randy Heuer on percussion, Paul Puzzullo on bass and Mark Nanni on keys. Opening with Let It Shine, a moving rocker with a contagious back beat and screaming lead guitar, what's not to like? Rat A Tat is up next with a catchy free San Francisco sound but a definite pop feel. Lead vocal by Novak is strong and Nanni on keys bridges the track between Andrews and Golden's guitar work. Quiet ballad, Chasing, has solid melodic bones and with well meshed vocal harmonies and floating violin accompaniment. The Phone has a cool Spanish feel with nice nylon string and electric guitar work by Golden and well balanced violin work as well as seductive vocals from Novak. Very nice! Hands On has a cool funky rhythm and Novak has a laid back vocal delivery. Andrews plays it straight up with solid drumming giving the track a lot of punch. Golden steps up with a hot guitar solo in hot contrast to this otherwise mesmerizing track. New Song is a R&B style ballad featuring Novak on vocal and a clean key solo by Nanni. A cool radio track. Wrapping the release is Good Enough, is a down the middle pop track with a dance beat but with short instrumental bursts from Golden and Nanni giving the track extra oomph.

Raise The Ruf - 20 Years of Music... Double CD out today: November 11th
Raise The Ruf for 20 Years of Music:
From the juke joints to world
stages
This label offers only the best for fans
A Special double CD
out on November 11th
Atlanta, GA – Ruf Records celebrates its 20th
Anniversary on November 11th with a double CD release of tunes from the first
line up in 1994 to the current roster in 2014. This German label started as a
dream for Thomas Ruf, after he got completely smitten with the Blues. Artists
have come and gone from this small but all label, but with Thomas’ vision, the
drive is still there to present the best. Ruf Records is distributed by Allegro
worldwide through all various digital downloads and retail stores. After 120
releases or more, Grammy nominations, a lot of Blues Music Awards winners and at
least a thousand miles traveled; Thomas Ruf has arrived at a
milestone.
A Guy Name Ruf – “Roof” like the roof over your head:
As anything in life, you get the idea when you are not
thinking, it comes out of the blue and it hits you in the face. It happened
late one night; Thomas Ruf was at a show at the Black Forrest, a local club,
where the great Luther Allison was playing. Mr. Allison was playing with the
local folk musicians and he saw something special unfold. Something overcame
him; watching and hearing this now iconic eclectic group of players, Thomas
began to think, “This is something I would love to be a part of!”
Ruf started out working on the road with Luther, when the
blues musician would tour Europe assisting him with his needs. They became
friends and soon Ruf found his mentor in Luther Allison. Thomas still gets in
the trenches with his artists 20 years later with The Spin Doctors, Samantha
Fish and Royal Southern Brotherhood. His award winning live DVD/CD concerts,
Songs From The Road, are gifts to the fans that can buy and experience
what that night had to offer.
Thomas Ruf is a firm believer in all aspects of the artist’s
career is important and should be addressed. This sometimes means talking at all
hours of the night and day to be the guiding light throughout. He points out the
obvious, tells the truth while dreaming the biggest dream of all, everyone is to
be happy and successful with their artistic journey.
“The test of time will show which of them is going to remain
significant” – Thomas Ruf (Classic Rock Magazine 2014)
Ruf comes from a small town in Germany called, Lindewerra
(2.5 hours north of Frankfort), with a population of 250, where everyone is sure
to know him. From his tall height to his collection of colorful shirts to the
pile of vinyl records underneath his arm; he eats, drinks and breathes music. He
has been known to bring an extra suitcase just to fill it up with vinyl records
when he traveling. He’s always hunting for more and asks, “Where is a good
record store that sells vinyl?”
Where the Blues Crosses Over:
“Where the blues crosses over” has been Thomas’ slogan for a
long time. “The blues has influenced rock and pop music, but the influence goes
both ways. It was never a way one-way street,” Ruf told Classic Rock
Magazine in 2014.
In 1997, Ruf was putting together a Rolling Stones tribute
album with his roster at the time, and he brought in Luther Allison one more
time. Mr. Allison was sick with lung cancer but as you hear him sing the track,
“You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, you’d never know it. He was full of gusto,
guts a bustin’ and heart achin’ by leaving it all out there for others to feel
what he was feeling. Four weeks later after that session, Luther passed away at
the age of 58. So Thomas placed the gospel-tinged anthem at the end of this
double CD in honor of his mentor, his friend and his muse.
Luther holds a huge place in Thomas’ heart and soul, for the
Chicago blues maestro, gave him the light and fire to start and now carry on.
Perhaps in some way he is always around giving Ruf by surrounding him of the
very best.
As Thomas writes in the liner notes, “Luther’s name will
always be connected to the label’s history.”
Music to fans’ ears:
The double disc release is carefully laid out in sequence
with songs starting by the young blood; girls and guys with guitars, vocally
gifted singers to the respected veterans. Ruf carefully wrote about each artist
talking about how much he was a fan of theirs before he even met them. He’s keen
on talent that’s for sure.
Several successful musical careers are made and some are made
legendary, starting with Luther Allison, of course, Ana Popovic, Candye Kane,
Sue Foley, Savoy Brown, Louisiana Red, Walter Trout and even The Spin
Doctors.
He has developed many young careers, with Joanne Shaw Taylor,
Samantha Fish, Thorbjorn Risager and Laurence Jones as they learn their craft by
putting together group tours and projects. Blues Caravan, Girls and Guys with
Guitars and his award winning, live CD/DVD series “Songs From The Road”
introduce fans to his label roster in a unique manner.
Enter Royal Southern Brotherhood:
RSB as we – fans, friends and their musical family call them
– was a brain child of industry vet, manager Rueben Williams, for he brought
this groovy, funky and blues group to Thomas to see what would happen.
The sound was big; the grooves were funky – why? One, you had
Cyril Neville, from New Orleans’ royal family of the same name, two, you had
Devon Allman, from another legendary family of rock, The Allman Brothers Band,
Gregg’s son. Then, you had a bright and shining star in blues guitarist Mike
Zito, all backed up by the most eclectic rhythm section put together, drummer
Yonrico Scott and bassist Charlie Wooton. Their 2012 release flew off their
merchandise table, store’s shelves and the media ATE them up. Fans from all five
members came together as one to become “Loyal Royals” as guitarist Devon pegged
them. In 2014, their second release, heartsoulblood was again a
success as the band grows in their musical shoes.
Again, records were broken, miles were traveled and we all
fell in love with the music again.
What the future holds:
With offices in the U.S. and Germany, Ruf Records operates
24/7 with radio, public relations, retail and distribution. It’s not an easy
task but it’s done effectively. Ira Leslie heads up the U.S. operations and
Michael De Urso is chief radio promoter; they are both based in the New York
area. Amy Brat, of Bratgirl Media is out of Chicago can be found posting away on
all the social media platforms, while Jill Kettles, of Miss Jill PR is the
labels’ publicity contact who resides in Atlanta.
On the creative side; Ruf surrounds himself with the best to
achieve his goal, to make the artist happy, let them breathe and be who they
are. He has a list of go to people like Jim Gaines, a producer based out of
Memphis who has a way of calming the nerves of musicians who might be entering
the studio for the first time. Jim’s no-nonsense approach is something that
attracted Ruf back in the 1990s and beyond.
“He (Ruf) thinks outside the box in a business that sometimes
seems content being in it.” - Guitarist Albert Castiglia (taken from
Classic Rock Magazine
2014)
So a lot of times that Rolling Stones’ song comes up in life,
sometimes as a sign, “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try
sometimes, you get what you need.”
And all Ruf needed, was the blues.

Hittin' the Note Records artist: Tommy Talton - Until After Then - New Release review
I just received the newest release, Until After Then, from Tommy Talton and it is a mixed bag of cool tunes. Opening with title track, Until After Then, Talton creates an almost Steely Dan like pop jazz feel with Matt Slocum on organ, Frankie Nattola on bass and David Keith on drums joining Talton on guitar and vocal. Real Sugar has a super Al Green like R&B strut. Kevin Holly adds a cool wah wah guitar, Billy Earheart electric piano, David Hood bass, Bill Stewart drums but it is the cool sax work of Brad Guin and trumpet work by Ken Watters added to Talton's vocals that pushes this one over the top for me. Nice! Mr. Love is an easy rocker which actually reminds me quite a bit of Joe Walsh when he plays it mellow. Another cool track. That Distant Light has a super sweet Paul McCartney like melody. Talton continues to show his versatility as both a songwriter and singer. My, O, My again has a McCartney kind of sound with a quiet beauty. Talton does show a little slide work on this track and it's smooth as silk. I Keep My Mind On You changes directions radically ending up in Margaritaville. With an island feel, Holly on 12 string, Earheart on keyboard and Watters' trumpet accents, this track could easily hit the airwaves hard. She Was There is a fresh sounding pop ballad with Talton leading the way on vocal and acoustic guitar and clean piano lines by Kenny Head. The Man From Down Near Waco has a simple country western ballad feel with a pinch of rock. John Kulinich plays a cool western style guitar riff adding a nice touch. Love U A Little is a simple ditty with some real smooth acoustic dobro slide work. You Got A Friend has a catchy melody, clever rhythm and warm vocal harmonies. Wrapping the release is instrumental, Surfin' The Levee, a funky rock track with Talton on distorted vocals and guitar, Keith Head on organ, Brandon Peeples on bass and David Keith on drums. Talton does stretch out a fairly cool guitar solo on this track. This is a really nice jam to wrap up a primarily mellow release.

Ruf Records artist: Dana Fuchs - Songs From The Road - New Release Review - CD/DVD
I just received the newest release, Songs From The Road from Dana Fuchs and it's quite dynamic. Recorded Live at Highline Ballroon in New York City, Fuchs opens with Bliss Avenue. Fuchs hits the stage hard with a dramatic vocal entrance and a stinging tele solo from Jon Diamond really turned my head. Next up is Handful Too Many, a track showing a lot of commercial potential with a pinch of country and warm backing from Elaine Caswell, Nicki Richards and Bettie Sussman (The Screaming Sirens). Livin' On Sunday is a really cool track with a funky revival back beat. The "Screaming Sirens" really give it that extra edge and may be one of my favorite tracks on the release. How Did Things Get This Way really has a Stones feel and Fuch's "Pearl" like vocals shine through. Diamond is again hitting the frets hard this time on Les Paul but this track is a hard driven rocker. R&B track So Hard To Move is a really nice ballad and both the solid bass work of Jack Dailey and keys from Pete Levin are instrumental in making the track so easily controlled by Fuchs. Another powerful tele solo by Diamond ices this cake. Summersong is another R&B number with sweet backing vocals from The Screaming Sirens. I would be totally amiss if I didn't mention how cool Dailey's Jazz Bass looks with it's 50 year old black worn finish. Set It On Fire is a pop rocker with solid commercial potential. Tell Me I'm Not Drinking is a strong acoustic number featuring Fuchs and Sirens on rich vocal harmonies and Diamond on acoustic guitar. Another acoustic number, Sad Salvation, features Fuchs on a quiet country ballad backed by Diamond on vocal and acoustic and Matt Beck with nice crying tele backing and a real sweet slide solo. Kicking it back up into country rock mode, Love To Beg has a taste of Skynyrd but built on more of a pop ballad bass. Diamond again wields his mighty axe where it isn't as much about speed as about intensity. Very nice. Rodents In The Attic has a real country western rhythm emphasized by Joe Dailey's drum patterns. Fuch's shows absolute comfort and composure on this track. Getting down more into a honky tonk feel, Nothin' On My Mind, gives Levin to show his country chops and Diamond twangs his tele as well. Very nice! Vagabond Wind actually reminds me a little bit of Macy Gray (a real compliment) but of course with the biting vocal style more akin to Joplin. A very strong track, this is my favorite tune on the release. Long Long Game is a basic country rock track with well blended instrumentals throughout. Diamonds solos on this track are a bit more progressive on this track but Fuchs, maintains front and center with her dynamic personality. Keep On Walkin' gets back into a funky rock feel with Fuchs getting tight with the Sirens and Diamond taking a short crisp solo. On Otis Redding's soul classic, I've Been Loving You, Fuchs may best show the qualities of her vocal skills and Diamond lays down some of the beefiest guitar riffs on the release. This is the hottest track on the release... smokin! Wrapping the release is John Lennon's Don't Let Me Down. You do have to wonder how one would close a set after that last track and Fuchs pulls out the perfect track in this rock classic. Using Lennon's basic arrangement but with solid organ work from Levin, a great bass line from Dailey, Diamond throws a stiff guitar solo, warm vocals from the Sirens and some of the most tame vocals on the release, you feel a closure with this set. Very nice.

Mark T. Small Wins "Acoustic Blues Album of the Year" Award at 2014 Blues Blast Magazine Awards Show
Mark T. Small Wins “Acoustic Blues Album of the
Year” Award at 2014 Blues Blast Magazine Awards Show
CHAMPAIGN, IL – Blues singer/guitarist Mark T. Small won the
“Acoustic Blues Album of the Year” award at the 2014 Blues Blast Magazine Awards
Ceremonies, held October 23 at the Fluid Events Center in Champaign, Illinois.
Small also performed during the gala held to honor blues music artists and CD
releases for the year. "It was an honor to be
part of such a fine event and be associated with such a fantastic publication,”
said Mark T. Small. “Winning the award was the icing on the cake.”
The Somerset, Massachusetts-based artist garnered the
recognition for his January, 2014, release, Smokin’ Blues, on the
Lead Foot Music label imprint. The dozen tracks on Smokin’ Blues,
Small’s fourth CD, solidified his place as an emerging master of
the guitar, whose styles range from Delta and Chicago blues to the intricate,
flatpicking style from his early days in “Newgrass” bands. The 12 songs on the
CD reflect music originally performed by such early blues legends as Blind Boy
Fuller, Tampa Red, Charley Patton and Reverend Gary Davis to post-war icons John
Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James and even a Stax/Memphis soul vibe with
the inclusion of a Rufus Thomas tune.
“Smokin' Blues is a
sampler of the guitar grooves that make up my solo show,” said Mark T. Small
upon the album’s release. “My main objective for this CD was to produce a
recording that sounds and feels like I am playing in a small room with the
listener. The only effect that was added, other than the ‘radio tone’ on the
song, ‘Daddy Was a Jockey,’ was a touch of reverb to further simulate listening
in a small room.”
Upon its release, reviews for the
CD were over-the-top in their praise. “Smokin’ Blues lives up to
its title from start to finish,” wrote Malcolm Kennedy in his review for the
Washington Blues Society. “I give it my highest recommendation,
simply fabulous!” “He's as good a guitarist as you will hear and if you listen
to Smokin’ Blues, you will hear plenty of evidence of that, as
Small tears through a dozen of his favorite songs,” said Graham Clarke in
Friday Blues Fix. “With vocals as strong as sweet as his fret
work, Small has made one memorable and amazingly versatile album right here that
guitar fans will love.”
Mark T. Small
has been playing music since his early teens, when he began listening to Old
Time Music. He learned to play fiddle tunes on the guitar in the styles of Doc
Watson and Norman Blake and also learned to play the Dobro. In 1981, this music
took Mark to Indiana to play and record with a five-piece “Newgrass Band” called
The Brown County Band. At the same time, he was playing harmonica and listening
to Junior Wells and Charlie Musselwhite.
After
returning to the East Coast, Mark dug deeper into the blues, playing more
electric guitar. When he was playing progressive Newgrass, his style had the
influence of the blues. Now delving into the blues, his playing has the razors
edge and speed that was developed from years of flat-picking. This combination
of the lightning fast bluegrass style and soulful blues playing are the key
components of Mark’s sound. .
Beginning in
the late 1980s, Mark started his own Chicago-style blues band that ranged
anywhere from three to ten pieces on a given night and was a staple on the New
England club circuit for over a dozen years. Many of the gigs were played as a
“power trio” with Mark singing and filling the band out with scorching electric
blues guitar. Other times, the band included a keyboard or sax player and/or the
addition of the Newport Navy Band Horn Section.
In 2000, Mark
began to gravitate back to his acoustic roots and the studio became his
classroom. After making a decision to pursue a solo career, Mark took all of the
lessons that he had learned over the last 25 years and constructed an act that
was as hard- hitting as the band, but all in a one-man show. As such, he’s
opened for Johnny Winter, Robert Cray, James Cotton and others.
Today, his
show includes many traditional Delta blues numbers with a Chicago blues slant
that transforms each tune into a “tour de force.” Included are the blazing
flat-picking techniques that grabbed audiences in Mark’s bluegrass days, the hot
slide guitar playing that creates a mood and timbre change in each set and the
showmanship that was developed from his years of experience.
“On
Smokin' Blues I tried to match the intensity of playing in a club
setting,” Mark said at the time. “In these settings I take the tunes that I
love, interpret them and do everything possible to make that connection with the
audience.”
