I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

The Mighty Cash Cats - The Ballad of Johnny and June - New release review

I just received the newest release, The Ballad of Johnny and June from The Mighty Cash Cats, a nostalgic trip through American folk, country and rock music through the eyes of The Mighty Cash Cats as Johnny and June Carter Cash. Opening with Carl Perkins' Long-Legged Guitar Pickin' Man, you can definitely hear the influences of the man in black in vocal and arrangement, really nicely adorned by Oliver Thin on chicken picken guitar. Title track, The Ballad of Johnny and June has the feel of midwest rocker with flavors of Seger and Frey. Although not mentally transported, Michael and Leticia nicely capture the spirit of Johnny and June on this track. Merle Travis' Sixteen Tons is a blend of Tennessee Ernie Ford, The Stray Cats and Johnny Cash. Jimmy Calire's addition on B3 and Leticia's bass work are tight. Dylan's It Ain't Me Babe is up next, again capturing the spirit of Johnny and June on a classic track. 40 Shades of Green is my favorite track on the release with a real slice of country. Vocal blending is smooth and the melody is super. Classic western track, Ghost Riders in The Sky is up next and the track is performed in traditional style. Bound to be a crowd favorite with the resurgence of cowboy music, this track is cool. Tennessee Flattop Box features Leticia on lead vocal and I think is her definite vocal showcase. Real nice acoustic country style track. Nine Inch Nails' penned Hurt is a simple dark ballad with Michael on lead vocal, acoustic guitar and Calire on piano. Unlike most of the tracks on the release, a nice quiet track. Wrapping the release is Johnny's trademark Ring Of Fire. Overall a pleasant trip through Americana music with a thick taste of Johnny Cash.

In Other Mighty Cash Cats News:

When top-rated German television reality program RTL Punkd 12 recently sought a live touring band in the U.S. to profile, they looked no further than Ventura County's own Mighty Cash Cats. The German TV show had seen a glowing live review of the 'Cats dead-on Johnny Cash tribute show, and with The Man In Black still hugely popular throughout Europe, the Mighty Cash Cats were an easy choice.

What The Press Is Saying About Mighty Cash Cats:

"Michael J leads the performance playing a black acoustic guitar. It is impossible not to be drawn to the bass texture of his voice -- and his physical and aural resemblance to Johnny Cash is practically eerie. The Mighty Cash Cats are purely live entertainment for a live audience. They know how to talk to the crowd and manuver their instruments and voice to create a body of sound for each song, no matter the genre or mood. They closed with Cash's Orange Blossom Special to raucous applause." MUSIC CONNECTION MAGAZINE

Americana Made - The Mighty Cash Cats - New Release Review

I just got the chance to listen to Americana Made by The Mighty Cash Cats - Michael J. & Leticia. This is an unusual recording covering Johnny Cash's career from Sun Records to the Rick Ruben American Recordings. Decked out in black and using Cash's vocal inflections, Michael J. and Leticia plus the addition to a few tunes by Hank Williams, Tim Hardin and Carl Perkins as well as two original numbers. The band, in addition to Michael J. Smith on vocal, guitar, Hammond and bass; Leticia Blumette on vocal, bass and guitar and strongly supported by Jarold Davis on lead guitars and vocals; and Justin Young on drums. The tunes included are Jackson, Tennessee Flattop Box, Ghost Riders in The Sky, No More Lonely Days and Empty Nights, Long Legged Guitar Picking Man, If I Were A Carpenter, Jambalaya, Wildwood Flower and The Dancer. The tribute is well throughout and performed. Leticia's vocals are particularly clear and interesting on Jambalaya.

Need some Cash... here you go!
